Title: UKGPL Season 22 (2011-2012) Intermediate (65) - Zandvoort (1948-72) - May 8

UKGPL Season 22 65 Intermediates Trophy
Race 10 Zandvoort

Welcome to the final round of the Intermediates Trophy for Season 22 - we are off to Holland to play in the sand dunes. Cookie is almost there but Rainier could pip him at the post. A top four finish for the championship leader would seal the deal whatever M. Dave can do. It is between those two although Ronnie could come from nowhere if he wins and the others don't score...

Circuit Park Zandvoort is located in Burgemeester van Alphenstraat, near the town of Zandvoort in the Netherlands. The first street race was held on June 3, 1939. A real circuit was not built until after the war, based on communications roads built by the German army during its occupation in WW2. It was inaugurated on August 7, 1948. Next year the circuit hosted the Zandvoort Grand Prix. The following year, the race was called the Dutch Grand Prix, and it was included in the Formula One World Championship from 1952. It remained on the F1 calendar for 30 out of the next 34 years. In 1985, the Dutch Grand Prix was held for the last time. The company that commercially ran the circuit went out of business, marking the end of Circuit Zandvoort. A plan to save the remaining track was eventually made and Circuit Park Zandvoort was born, a 1.6 mile Club Circuit, in 1989.

The circuit is a twisty bumpy monster and it can be difficult to pass. So beware.

The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will cover the whole the first lap up to the last corner.

Please check the Season 22 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=335&theme=6) regarding rules and the Intermediates Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=347&theme=6) pages in particular.

Please see the Intermediates registration thread for an explanation of the chassis allocations shown below:

Grats Max for the win, grats Axel for the championship.

Thanks to you, Max, with your win I keep a final 2nd position on the championship  with only 2 points more than Ronnie.

My (very little) hopes for the championship ended in Tarzan on the begin of the 2nd lap when I was torpedoed by Francesco.
I looked at the replay : on this fatal 2nd lap the speed of Francesco' Ferrari just before Tarzan turn (just at Caltex flag) was 158 km-h (I let you calculate in mph), and it was 128 km-h, 144 km-h, 134 km_h, 141 km-h on the following laps...
so there was no hope to avoid the collision with the full tank !

Thanks for the flowers!

Gratulations to Max and Ronnie and especially to BERNIE WELL DONE!

This was a hard race on this tricky track, with big mistakes and some close fighting for position.
So my championship is save only after the Moderation...

This was a great season with the Ints and I hope you all enjoyed it.

Congratulations to Cookie for the championship

It was pretty much the whole dispute between Cookie and Rainier during the race.

They arrived after my mistake, quickly took off my car's path, did not want to disrupt this particular dispute of the two pilots.......heheheh

Both drivers did a great championship decided at the last race....BRAVO!!!!!!!

Well done again to Max and Bernie for the podium spots and Axel for the crown.

Much as I tried to get the BT7 or Cooper up to speed in practice leading up to the race I ended up in the Honda again. Got a good setup for qualifying but it did not serve me well in the race and my tyres were toast before half way. The first spin allowed the closing Max to pass me and the second spin put me out of his tow. I pressed as hard as I dared but he had my measure, great win Max. Sorry to see Axel had spun earlier when I looked at the replay as I'm sure he would have wanted to take the championship with a win. Grats to Dave who took second in the championship. Thanks everyone for a fun season.

Note to the race organiser: What happened to the grid slots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After putting together 4 perfect sectors with no tow, I smashed my PB for a sub 1.28.50 pole time. Remembering the grid stagger used on the practice servers earlier, I was confident of getting to the first corner in front. Imagine my horror when I lined up at the start to find myself three abreast alongside Max and Axel. Worst still I'm on the inside with a solid pit exit bollard directly in front of me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This could have ended in disaster for everybody. If Max had made a better start and stayed alongside me when I had to swerve inside to avoid the pit exit bollard I could so easily have started a chain reaction that could have ended everyones race. Tell me this was a mistake and the grid should have been staggered?

Sorry Ray this was my fault!  :notworthy:
I was as surprised as we all, when the grid in the race was the standard! I did install a loose grid on my server...
I have to investigate how this happened!
Maybe I did install it to my previous german version of GPL and not to the new english version I installed recently.

Thanks to the extra carefull drivers who helped to avoid the desaster!

My 2nd official online GPL Event, and no DC on the last lap this time (still gutted from the lost P3 @ Mosport :'( ).  The main purpose of my 2 end of season races was to get an idea of the event process etc, and try to keep out of people's way who may have a stake in the championship.

Made sure I'd be starting at the back of the grid, which is my preferred race start place at the moment. Despite the time lost doing this, and from negotiating the odd spinner, I was pleased to stay on the lead lap at the flag.

I'm happy that I've been thereabouts on the pace with the mid-field, managing a 1m30s in last nights race (still a way off the quickest, but I was happy with my consistency), and other than gear ratios, I'd not done much to change the default set-up of the BRM

P7 was about right, I'd lost a bit of time negotiating safely past the spinners in the early part of the race, and later, had a great race with Francesco in his Ferrari.  Had a couple of recovering Hondas fly by, and tried not to cost them or myself time in the process, which kept me ahead of the Ferrari behind.

Having bought GPL on it's day of realease back in '98, this is the first online series I've been involved in, and the 2 races have been great to be involved in.

Thanks for setting it all up, and hopefully see you on track again soon.

Finish of the season with the usual Ferrari without speed. On the straight, also with the trayl of other cars ,i have mesured(with GPL replay analiser) a difference of 8Km in max. speed.Until now is not clear to me if is the car or my pedal.
BTW my compliment to Hawkey preceding me for a lot of laps, complyments for so many laps without error.

Very supprised to be on the podium , did not really fancy this race after a long (4 hours) drive home from the smoke , the last thing i fancied was another drive .

Did ok in qually though nowhere near the alien times of the riceburners  .

When the flag dropped I lost a place or two due to being over cautious , then on lap2 got caught up in Rainier and Franchesco's coming together , the Ferrari being parked across "my" piece of track and I ended up T boning the latest model from Marinello (sorry Franchesco but I really had nowhere else to go) amazingly my BT11 came through without any damage and I was able to solddier on .

After that I just drove to the finish picking up a place here and a place there as others in front decided to check out various bits of Dutch landscape . Goeff gave me a hard time early on , then both JonnyO and later Axel had a turn at chasing me,  but I was able to keep a safe distance ahead , just as well because I was in no state to race anyone at close quarters finding it hard to keep my concentration alive but was determined not to give up a podium finish .

Grats to Axel for a very well deserved and close fought championship . Grats to Max and Ronnie and to the championship runners up , hope you all enjoyed the series as much as I did   ;)

Thanks for organising and looking forward to S23    :)

Well done to Cookie for taking the championship & team mate Dave Rainier for second.
Although I didn't always qualify or finish last I think, I shall bow out of the Inters & drop down to the Novices next season.  (On the proviso they let me keep the BT11).
Good to see Steve Bird back on track at Zandy - I had hoped to give you a bit of competition but a family interruption ended up with a visit to the sand dunes.
Maybe something to do with chassis allocations but there seemed little to choose between the fastest lap times in the Novs & the Inters.

Thank you for your fair play, Jonny ;)

What will you do next season with mod65  ? (I remember you were Novices champion last season)
will you go with the Pro ?
same question to Axel, Ronnie, Maxime, Bernie ...

Next season?? Gotta see what happens with automatic promotion/relegation, handicapping, penalties, choice of tracks etc before even thinking about where or what I might be driving.

I think it is safe to say that Promotion/Relegation will not be a formal process but individual drivers may be 'invited' to consider a move...

As with all these things it isn't black and white and some common sense needs to be applied so...

Pros next season Ronnie ;)

Same here...

And if there is coming an attractive F2 championship I have to weight my interests as I will do 4 series maximum -> PSC GTs F2 +?
If I compare my times with pro times in 65s, I am way too slow and I do too much mistakes...

I'm in the same position but a whole division lower - 3 wins and a 2nd place (after modding) from 6 starts in a BT7 is probably justification for the others wanting to see me booted up a level but I don't feel confident about taking on the likes of Ronnie or Axel.....

You've got to go sooner or later, and don't forget you'll get a free choice of cars.

I've always believed that you only get better when you are racing against other people at a similar, or slightly above your level, if you stay in Novices you'll just run away with the championship, and where is the fun in that?
