Title: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Formula 2 Trophy - Spa (1947-78) - Jun 22
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on June 19, 2012, 12:00:27 AM +0100
*** PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT STARTS 30 MINUTES LATER THAN USUAL ***
The first UK GPL championship using the 1967 Formula 2 cars starts here – the F2 European Tour.
Rules are pretty simple – for the first two rounds there is a free choice of chassis for all drivers. Handicapping will be introduced for the three leading drivers in each division from Round 3 onwards.

The circuit need no introduction – the Papyrus original at Spa. This should tell us two things, 1/ how good the drafting is with this Mod & 2/ how fast can they go!

As posted in the Race Registration thread the series will be run on two separate grids; The Lights (on T7_2) & the Heavys (on UKGPL3). Please ensure you join the correct race. The Driver list is shown below & the Champioship Table can be found here F2 European Tour (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=366&theme=6)

Unlimited resets are allowed but every Shift R must be followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane. If you Reset on the last lap a 30 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.

In line with other divisions the races will be subject to full moderation  in the red zone – which will be up to the entry to Malmedy.

Looks like Germany v Greece on Friday.
Suggest we defer the start for 30 minutes - so practice will run from 9.30 at latest with the race starting at 10.
The football should finish by 9.30 UK time. If it goes to extra-time & penalties then that you will have to make a decision about racing or football.
I know that for some this will finish quite late - hopefully an acceptable compromise!
Will change the race post later.

We had a power cut just before the race... got the PC restarted & managed to join the server but my router then started freaking out & I got kicked off. By the time I'd reset it a few times & restored my connection the race had started & I could no longer join. Broadband in rural Cornwall is bloody hopeless >:(

Well, I picked a random car Thursday & ran a few F2 laps.   I seemed to recall the Protos was kind of enjoyable in the fun series & I managed to break the 4min barrier.  Yes!     Then a quick glance at other F2 laptimes showed that was at least 20 seconds away from acceptable. Eeek!

So, no time for any other running. With 5mins before the delayed start,  I stuck a pin in the entry list & ended up with Lola non-BMW.   Maybe that would end up better?!  It did too - 20 seconds off the Protos, although with that default setup I was being reeled in on the long bits.

I seem to have finished with some other car bits attached.  I've binned them as they are bent beyond recognition now.

Unlucky Rog out the hairpin.

Cheers for the run chaps.
Dave.

Big congrats to the Lights - blanket finish and Evil and Fulvio's finish just has to be seen to be believed. How Clive got third from where he was at the last corner is beyond me... commiserations Fulvio.

 :D
Congratulations to Mark , Natan and Fulvio , as well to Ron for pole position .

Luckily those football game on TV did find his end , without extra time needed .
So I jumped into my racing seat with 16min left for qualifying . P6 not bad .
My start was a good one and due to my high top speed setup  , I could climb up to P4 .

But braking into La Source the 2nd time clearly shows my Matras did behave horrible under braking and or downshifting . Did know from my practise , La Source and Les Combes serves me extreme spinning rear , part of a second later after brake fully released. But I wasn’t able to cure that by setup work .
As my setup did based on my silverstone one , which was all over gentle , I did not understand whats wrong . So if anyone got a clue …and will let me know , it would be great .
( my Spa setup could be found here  ) .
https://rapidshare.com/files/3367097768/Spa_RACE_long_11Laps.ms1

well , to shorten the story : I spun at Les Combes in L3 .stranded upside down . shift_R , did make a stop&go at the end off these lap . Did cruise the track till the end of the race with no one around . reading newspaper on the long straights .

edit :
Evil and Fulvio's finish indeed is amazing !!!

I did very little preparation for this race, in fact to be honest I almost forgot about it ::)

So, i arrived in qually with about 15 minutes left......chose the Lola ( nice colour!?? seemed a good reason)...no setup.....no idea what a good setup even looks like for Spa!!  lol

Did my first flying lap and it felt good..until I crossed the line...............6 secs behind fastest time!!!hmmmmmmmmmmmmm???

Major gearbox change and I found another 3 secs.............hmmmmm but maybe with a tow ??

In desperation I upped the ratios some more and made 5th even higher, slipstreaming could be important here lol.

From about 9th on the grid I got a reasonable start and slipped past a couple of cars down into Eau Rouge, being very careful to avoid any contact early in this race. ;)
The first time we ran down to Masta I discovered that 5th gear was perhaps not right  :-\
Fortunately people in front opted to throw themselves either at each other, or the scenery and i gradually moved up the order until I was running alone in 2nd spot!!!!!.
By this time, Mark was a long way in front and now that I was sans-slipstream Mark was at least 2 secs a lap faster and going away.

With about 5 laps to go, I thought I was quite safe in 2nd place...lol..............How wrong could I have been??!! 5 cars closed in on me at a scary pace and suddenly I was in a 5 car dice for 2nd place!!!
The last few laps were absolutely brilliant racing, with slipstreaming moves happening all the time. The last lap was going to be VERY interesting :o.
Through Masta on the last lap there were 4 cars very close and I was wondering if I should make a move into Stavelot or wait. Fulvio and Natan solved that problem by going 2 abreast so I stayed behind and waited for an opening....and waited..... and waited. Every time I picked up the tow and thought I might be able to make a pass, the cars in front provided a rolling road block. So we all approached La Source spread across the road.
Natan took the defensive inside line and Fulvio took a line only slightly wider on the approach ...so I took the only vacant bit of tarmac and braked as late as I dared, hoping to sweep around the outside. I pulled level with Fulvio around the apex and nailed the gas.
Initially, Fulvio eased slightly ahead, but it seems my weird gear ratios finally kicked in and I was able to scream the Lola engine to breaking point and just, only just, steal 3rd spot from him.

Great racing guys and a great opener for our first F2 season  ;D

This could be a silly question... but what's the significance of the "purple" times in the race results? Of course blue signifies FL but what's the purple about?

Moderation report now published. There were penalties awarded in the Heavys but not enough to warrant any scanction in the next race.

Your moderation need clarification, Billy.
Nathan (nothing of personal) did a shift-r at 22m24.740 exiting from La Source (engine broken), but he dont execute a stop&go after this (he have stopped car in pit-lane BEFORE reset, not after).
I ask you if this behavior it's admitted: if yes, this open way to tactical races with less fuel and programmed pit-stop; if not, he have to be disqualified and all drivers behind him have to gain a position.

Thanks for mentioning this Alex. I did check the Shift R's were followe by SnG's - but maybe not watching it carefully enough.
Will have a look at this soon - but it will have to be after the Zandvoort race.

A couple of points:
There has been a change to the modration report which may be a useful reminder to all drivers. If you blow an engine or otherwise damage the car near the pits the correct protociol is to Reset, drive into the pit then Reset. Whilst it might seem logical to coast into the pit then Reset it is contrary to UKGPL rules.
Second please note that hanicapping applies for Round III (Porto). The following drivers have a restricted chassis:
LIGHTS - Mark Baresi = Ferrari or BT14 / Evil Clive & Alex Barresi = Ferrari, BT14 or the Cooper
HEAVY - Rainier = Ferrari or BT14 / Billy & Rog = Ferrari, BT14 or the Cooper

Chassis restrictions apply to the top three drivers - so they may change from race to race.
