Title: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) GT Team Challenge - Brands Hatch (GP) - Jul 8
Post by: EvilClive on July 02, 2012, 06:18:42 PM +0100
After the opening round of Season 23 GT Team races at Silverstone we move a short distance across the UK to another classic circuit, Brands Hatch.

This season we are trying to add some extra fun and tactical thinking to the races with the introduction of pitstops which are calculated to bring the racing closer in the final laps. In every race there will be one car that does not need to stop, but all of the other cars will have to visit the pits. All drivers appear to have coped with the added complication of pitstops in the first race and the relative stop times for Brands Hatch are set out below.

Teams can choose to run any cars they like, but in any race each all team members must drive different cars, so only one driver can drive the car that does not need to stop.

Pit stop times are listed below with a choice of a single long stop or two shorter stops... the choice is yours.

THIS RACE WILL HAVE A ROLLING START AND CARS ARE EXPECTED TO MAINTAIN THEIR GRID POSITIONS FOR THE FIRST LAP. THE POLE CAR WILL LEAD THE PACK AROUND AT A STEADY SPEED AND RACING WILL START AS CARS CROSS THE START/FINISH  LINE AT THE END OF LAP 1.

"Please ensure you are aware of the new in-series penalties for this season. Details are here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring a penalty will receive a PM informing them of this."

First Pit Window is: 28 (to go on your pit board) to 18 (to go on your pit board)
Second Pit Window is: 26 (to go on your pit board) to 9 (to go on your pit board)

Some useful information about pitstops. If you unsure about anything please post  a question and we will give you the answers.

1) We recommend the use of the small programme   "GPL WAIT"   .....link here This will time your stop for you and is simple to set up and operate.

2) Pitstops must be taken by coming to a halt in YOUR pitbox. That means where there is a black board with your racing name on it in pit lane.

3) To be sure that you are correctly in your pitbox approach your name board carefully with your car close to the pit wall. Just when the board vanishes STOP and you are correctly positioned.

4) If your stop is LESS than 30 seconds you can be a little less precise with your position as GPL will not disco you automatically.
However, if your stop is MORE than 30 secs you need to be correctly parked in your pitbox otherwise at 30 seconds GPL will retire your car. THIS IS WORTH PRACTISING OFFLINE.

5) Stop n Go after a Shift-R must be taken as a seperate stop and cannot be combined with your mandatory pitstop.

6) Proirity in pitlane is given to cars that are moving. If you are about to leave the pits after your stop you MUST wait if another car is about to pass you in the pits.

7) In this race all cars leaving the pits will emerge directly onto racing line and will have to be careful as they try to get up to racing speed. Please stay to the inside of Paddock Hill bend and avoid drifting to the left as you go through the dip and up to Druids. This will allow cars at full racing speed to use the racing line. Once you are into the braking point for Druids you should be able to take the optimum line.
Cars that are passing the pits at full racing speed should be looking for cars that might be leaving the pits and adjust their line accordingly to avoid any unecessary incidents.
Blocking cars that are still at racing speed will attract the attentions of the Moderators.

In view of the fact that not a single comment has been passed about the stop times for this race, I think that either.....

a)  I have made a major mistake and each team will run the same 3 cars? :o

         or

b)  The stop times are just about right?

I guess we will know the answer on Sunday evening. :-\

BTW I am going to Silverstone on Sunday for the British GP and I hope to be able take part in the Brands race. It just depends on the traffic chaos getting out of Silverstone.

Thanks Clive for this early post!

To me everything is ok with the times, now the teams have to make their choices...

I wish you a good Silvy weekend.

My trick was to take a bicycle to not be affected by the traffic chaos ;D

Hi guys,
I would suggest you a few little changements for those who want make 2 stops at the pitbox, that are:

Single Stop Time    Double Stop Time
Ford GT40 Mk4        No Stop                 No Stop
Ford GT40 Mk1        Stop&Go                No Stop
Ford GT40 Mk2B          16                        2
Mirage M1                  23                        5
Porsche 910               42                       15
Chaparral Mk2D           48                       18
Ferrari 330/P4             60                       24
Lola T70 Mk3              63                       25
Chaparral Mk2F           65                       26

i.e.: if a Chap Mk2F wants make 2 stops, it has to wait 26 secs each time it stops like stated in the column "Double Stop Time".
A Ford GT40 Mk1 has to stop only once and it has to make a Stop&Go like stated in the column "Single Stop Time"

The previous values for Double Stop Time are so high that none would have stopped twice. At least I would not have done it

T7 server is set to 35 laps Long race and listening on Igor in Console session with OpenGL_V2.

I won't race for a while cause my palsy Bell recent problem. If Marco will register he can race at my place for Team7.
Ciao

FMG can't make this race so Team Green have drafted in their reserve driver Jason Blito.  We are substituting a Novice Driver for a Pro driver so we are still within the rules assuming we are allowed reserves.

Hmmm - not a happy experience. Joined late but my best in practice was 1:42-1:43 - Started super slow with the intention of taking my pit stop immediately and running my own race - unfortunately got tangled in Nigel's spin and possibly damaged the car - engine blown. Stop n Go behing Nigel and then just when I had settled - screen freeze. Grrr.

Hope you had a good race and hope I didn't interfere with anyone while crashing GPL...

Well I had the GT40 Mk4 going along quite nicely in 4th or 5th. Would have been very interesting where I ended up after the pitstops but of course I got a  :censored:  :censored: screen freeze before I could find out. I don't understand this as I installed the new "fixed" track. At least the Gods of GPL had the decency to kick me off early on rather than on the last lap...

Having an enjoyable race and even picked up a couple of places until I made a silly mistake and clipped the inside kerb at Stirlings.  A gentle spin and no car damage but I couldn't move.  I assume I was beached on the outer kerb.  I had to wait until the whole field passed by before I could shift R.  Did my stop and go and then my pit stop before making another silly mistake and crashing at Clearways, race over.  Sorry for the poor performance teamies, I'll try to do better next time.

I was having a decent enough race in the MKIV, comfortably in the top ten until I made a mistake and damaged the car. Took my reset and penalty stop and continued on my way and was hunting down Sergio and thinking I might have him but kept losing time by letting the leaders through. Eventually was rammed off by one of those leaders making a VERY clumsy lapping move. I won't name names as an incident report is going in for this one......

I never tought i would say that, but that track is worse than silvestone... Silver atleast has funny clouds, and doesn't drop to 26 fps. I installed every low res update, and it still wasn't good. At end of rolling lap I had a brief screenfreese, just a second, like in the nurby last year with porkys... unfortunately this time I managed to rearend someone during the freese. Went into pits  and waited everyone to past, fair to the guy i rearended i guess... and to get abit further from the pack, so the game wouldn't decide to blackout completely...

After that everything was ok, the ford mk1 handled like a dream (a slow one), I had only one off, and despite being so slow finished seventh... not that it matters, Il get tons of penalty for that rolling lap...

So sad to see Al out.O thought he finished podium. Well at least Johnny and I pulled together a couple of points. I could have got third ..at least fought for it but got so surprised when the pitboard told me I was holding him at 5 secs that I kept staring at it and of went off. 20 secs lost but only one spot. Cant complain:).

What awful race! It is the 2nd one I made from my girlfriend's PC and the 2nd made badly so I think the PC is underpowered. I had micro freezes all the entire race and only when I had only one driver around me or when I was alone the game was playable (with a broad sense the term). So I decided to upgrade the PC to make it at least decent for GPL (it means Athlon xp 3200+ and a PCI 4x Graphic Card or and nVIDIA AGP 7800 at least or a decent ATI AGP) indeed if anyone of you drivers should have one of these stuff let me know and we'll make the bargain.

Fortunately I was in the back in the grid so the possibility to make a incident was little, and apart this someone else have thought to animate the race in front of me during the rolling start lap.

I was struggling all the race to predict where my car was going with never more than 20fps and in fact the few times I've gone out of track it has been because of this drops of fps.

I was engaged with someone at a certain point in the race but he rearended so I had to reset making the S&G just before to have the planned PitStop so this made me drop down at least 12 secs more.

After this I've gone out of track at least other 3 times and the last one, at 10 laps to go, with another reset and...I don't know if I made the respective S&G, I'll have to watch for the replay.

You will notice that Clouds has raced for Shadows - he has been put in as a non-scoring guest for this race as there was no 'pro' spot for him to go into.

Team Green did have a free spot but had already invited Jason to fill it.

Can I remind teams that each driver must take a different chassis in one race. You can, however, take the same chassis from race to race.

Teams risk losing points if drivers from the same team take the same chassis on the one race.

Cazz...gioco di legno !  ::) :P 8)

When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things...oops sorry this was another story  ;D

When I was a child, there were always children younger than me and than friends of mine, the majority of which were too young to have fun playing with us because we were faster and taller and stronger for them, so due to keep these children playing with us (almost every child had a younger brother or sister to keep an eye on while they were playing together in the street or in the park), we have had to invent a NEW game modality so said "gioco di legno" for "playing by wood" properly a fake or imitation play, in which the younger were playing with us and like us but without to be affected by our rules, practically they were playing by themselves also if mixed with us.
That's why I said ...gioco di legno... so I played with you all yesterday evening LOL

It is not a problem for me anyway  8)

I seem to be the only one happy with this race

After letting the team down at Silverstone that more than made up for it. Fifth was beyond my wildest expectations. I drove about as well as I'm able and profited from the misfortunes of others.

This represents a triumph for Tortoise Driving Theory. "You lose more time off the road than you can gain on it".

Well, I guess I have to say that eventually I was happy with my race too.

After a day at Silverstone watching the GP with Paul, I drove home (with the aid of a can of Red Bull) and jumped onto the server with the Porker.  I was rather surprised to find that no-one else had opted to take the Porsche because it is so strong around Brands??

Doni set a very fast pole lap for Mrs Fujikawa and we were looking good with a front row lock out ;D.

My qually time had been set on race fuel so I was reasonably confident of some good race pace. Cookie used the grunt of the 2D Chapp to muscle into 2nd place at paddock and I really gave him too much room as I struggled to stay on the black stuff and avoid a spin at the very first corner!!
In the early laps I was over driving a bit, but once I controlled the "Red Bull Buzz" I was able to pressure Axel's big 2D at almost every corner, until he ran wide and I was back into 2nd spot behind teammate Doni. The gap quickly closed and I began looking for a way past without compromising Doni's race. He kindly allowed me through and I was kind enough to immediately put a wheel on the grass at Stirlings and allow him to re-pass!! :-\
After that It was a case of pulling as big a gap as I could over Axel in his 2D and all of those Fords so that my 42 second pitstop would still allow me the chance to get back up to the sharp end of the race!!
Axel arrived in the pit lane on the same lap as i did my stop but I was able to leave before him and set off after numerous Mirages and Fords, slowly hunting them down until I found myself in the lead with about 8 laps to go.
It was about then that fatigue finally overcame the Red Bull and maintaining concentration was a real effort with some very narrow escapes as i missed braking points and turn-ins.
Fortunately, I survived and made it to the flag with Doni getting some good points too in his Fezza...SHE will be pleased, I hope!  ::)

Grats to all who finished and sorry to all those who were disco'd at a track that is considered "safe". I can only assume that these were more to do with the server and internet issues than anything that GPL is doing.

good race for me too even i did so many mistakes, at the start Hristo blows his engine and i was able to pick one place up . I couldnt stay with Cookie and Evil's porche's pace and slowly cap was 5 seconds or more .I got a good rhytm for the race .

Sorry Doni for hit ,i was ready try overtake you when i was close to you but you suddenly move to the pit entry lane and we collide ,sorry.

bad luck fo Hristo ! i was lloking for good fight !

My pit stop strategy was to come in 9 laps to go , i do it late as possible but couldnt keep 1st place as i see Evil's Porche was way too fast than my poor Mirage.

bad luck for cookie!  i dont know what happened to you ?

Yeah Juha good race!

My race could have been good as well, if not my engine exploded ::)
I think I have to take other cars from now on, no more Chaps!
I had the idea of the Porsche too, but tbh the Chap is more fun to drive :scooter:

The race was with lots of stutters from all this messages and when I tried to read one I damaged my car...

Grats to Evil on what must be a most satisfying victory!  Well done.  SHE was pleased. :)

Great job by Juha to score a fine P2 in the Mirage despite a mid-race incident.  Ahem...ahem...

Kinda lucky to score a P3 here in the Ferrari as I had some offs, incidents with contact with just about every Ford out there and a blown engine from which to recover.  To net a podium after all that was most surprising.

I hadn’t the slightest notion of entering the Ferrari.  I practiced with the Mk4 and was reasonably pleased to post a 36.90 in those trials, only about two seconds off my 330/P4 PB.  When I joined iGOR and punched up the event, I was dismayed to see that just about everyone was driving a Ford of some description and several Mk4's for sure.  I did some quick mental calculations and figured that with my pitstop handicap, I’d be just about even over the full distance with anything I could do with the Ford and the Ferrari was likely to be less of a handful over 35 laps.  So...

Pleased if lucky to snatch pole position even if a full second off my PB in the car.  Starting P1 was a real godsend in that it let me attempt a breakaway to build up a cushion for the mandatory pitstop.  Was the pace lap satisfactory, gents?

Off the start, I got away into the lead and pulled away nominally from Cookie’s Chaparral.  Soon, Evil was by to snatch P2 and closing in rapidly on me.  In my haste to load the Ferrari, I’d neglected to change my pitboard.srb and was still using the dedicated example for the Ford Mk4.  I have specific srb’s for each car that enables me to read the board without blockage of view from the GT car fenders/mirrors.  The result of this was that the bottom line of the board was obscured and I couldn’t see for the balance of the race just whom was behind me at anytime.  Only after switching over to the F10 chase view was I able to determine for a certainty that it was, indeed, my team leader, Clive the Evil, whom was chasing me.  Coming off Stirling’s on L6, I throttled back and let the little Porsche thru for the lead.  HER cars running P1 & P2.  Can’t be bad! :)

Less than a lap later, I’m back in the lead!  Evil has gone off in the devilish South Bank corner and put me right back up front with a substantial cushion.  Clive at least managed to recover just in time to keep Axel’s 2D Chaparral at bay.

Coming up to finish L15, I had a nice four-second advantage on Evil when he decided to make his handicap stop.  Ditto for Axel.  This promoted Juha to P2 but he was almost 30 seconds in arrears.  Looking good!  Yes, until part-way thru L16 when my V-12 engine puked up a few valves.  Groan...  It took me a few seconds to realize that the engine was junk and I finally pulled over for a reset just the other side of South Bank.  Going again, I dropped into the pits for my S&G at the end of the lap.  That near-on 30 second gap back to Juha in P2 had all but vanished.  He was now hot on my tail and proving most anxious to pass.  I was due for my handicap stop shortly so punched up, ‘PIT IN’, on this lap.  Preparing to dive into the pitlane at the end of the lap, I realize now that my better option was to let Juha pass coming off Stirling’s rather than lead down to Clearways.  As I rounded the corner and aimed for pitlane, I eased up on the throttle slightly and Juha, doubtless taken by surprise at this, tagged me and we both went into wild spins.  I’ll plead guilty on this and take responsibility for not exercising caution.  Apologies to Juha.  At least we were both able to recover and resume.

I served my stop noting the time with a stopwatch I had strung around my neck.  In my last-minute decision to run the Ferrari, I had not configured GPLWait properly and feared a massive cockup in the pits so yanked out the watch from a nearby desk drawer at the last moment.  I stumbled badly in grasping the watch but finally managed to activate it.  Observing the server replay later, it seems I was stationary for something like 66 seconds, well over my required time.

Mobile once more, I exited the pits in P9 to start L18, just behind Sky’s GT40.  My missions was clear.  Run like hell and try to climb the leader board as best I can.  A unintentional and lamentable mission also surfaced: Clear the track of every FoMoCo product that came into my crosshairs.  First victim was Sky.  Blasting down Pilgrim’s Drop, I positioned to pass on Sky’s right and completely fluffed the maneuver.  Instead of clearing his RR corner cleanly, I piled into him heavily.  I was astonished to see that despite the healthy knerf, Sky held the car extremely well and it seemed to barely upset the GT40.  My Ferrari, too, seemed hardly bothered at all by it and I scooted by going low into Hawthorn.  PHEW!  Close one.  Little did I know that much more was to come.

Fester was next on my hit list and I caught him on L20.  He was going very well indeed in his GT40 and as Steve is an old mate from way back, I didn’t have the heart to shunt him off.  Instead, I let him off with a warning and glided by without contact.

Next in my sights was Sam in the Ford Mk4 model.  I closed in rapidly but Sam is wily and I figured not to just breeze by without having to work a bit.  L21 and coming off Bottom Bend and gassing it for the dash over to South Bank, I fully expected Sam to run to the right of centre of track on the setup for BB.  I intended to duck to the left and go low into BB and snatch P6.  Unfortunately, not having run laps behind Sam to make book on him, it would seem that in my observing several laps of the server replay cap that he doesn’t take this corner as I do and runs low in the entry with the car sliding wide mid-corner and then tucking it down for the exit.  I committed to that low pass and before I realized it, was closing in way too fast on the Mk4.  POW!  We’re both off with Sam getting the worst of it by far.  I dropped about six to seven seconds.  Sam about 10.  So sorry, Sam.  Made a complete balls up of that.

Once back on track, I carried on to try and chase down next man, King in the Mirage, running P5.  This was going to be a tall order as he was fully 18 seconds up the road.  Not much chance of catching him with only a dozen or so laps to run.  Still, you gotta try.

L23 and something of a break.  Good for me.  Bad for Axel.  On L22, from a solid P3, he’d clipped the markers on the inside of Paddock and spun.  The stoutness of these little critters was enough turn the handling of his Chaparral into junk forcing a reset later in the lap and the required pit-side Stop-n-Go at the end of the lap.  Back up to speed but now with a full load of fuel and cold tires, his speed was seriously compromised.  I was able to finish L23 just seven seconds down to him.  Hmmm...

L24 and the gap was down to just two seconds.  Cookie’s condition and traffic was playing into my hands.  Til I came across Jason, that is.  From about three lengths behind JB and in approaching Westfield, the big Ford swung in high and wide.  I tucked low to the kerb and looked to pass if Jason stayed up there.  From what I can make out from the replay cap, the Ford slid and pivoted off the nose to tighten up its arc.  From being well to the left of the centre of the roadway, his Mk4 pinched down towards the middle of the road closing off my path.  I slowed but not enough to avoid a collision.  In what has to be one of the more remarkable shunts caught on tape, Jason’s Ford flipped into the berm then, incredibly, righted itself to continue. ???  To say the least, spectacular!  Surely, this one will make the highlight reel at the end of the season. :)

I dropped about five seconds in that adventure but I wasn’t thru with Jason just yet.  The very next lap and in closing again on his big Ford, he went in too deep at Druids and skated high and wide again.  In fact, he came within an ace of dropping off the road and spinning altogether.  I tucked my P4 down to the kerb...or at least tried to hold the car low...and as I was arcing thru, the sliding Ford caught a bite and came back down to the middle of the track.  Collision #2 with Jason.  He went off into the berm and luckily, this contact only cost me a handful of tenths.

Carrying on in P5, I started L27 about six seconds down to Axel.  It needs to be mentioned about here that Hristo had the misfortune of a slight mis-step on L25 in the compression of Dingle Dell to fall off the road and go over the berm while riding in a solid P2.  As he’d already had a reset(three, actually, by my count), he was done for the day.  Bad luck.  This promoted me to P5.

L28 and a phenomenally unlucky turn of events for King Hiro in a solid P3 five seconds up the road from Cookie.  A slide into Druids left him facing the berm with little option but to jockey his Mirage about til he could get it facing down track.  The cost was two positions with Cookie and I moving up.  Axel almost collected the Mirage and half-spun in avoidance with a significant loss of his advantage over me.  From being a comfy seven seconds up on me at the start of the lap, the gap was now down to just two.  It’s on for the podium! :)

Over the next several laps, I just gradually closed in on the Chaparral without getting too hyper.  I felt that there was enough time to get into position to challenge in the very last laps.  Comes L32 and I’m only down about 1/3 of a second.  Three laps to go.  I just know that I’m going to have to be on my best as I’m perfectly aware that the Chaparral is no slouch of a car and Cookie no pushover.  Mon Dieu!  Approaching Clearways on L32, I’m part dismayed/part delighted to see Axel’s Chaparral drift off onto the grass verge and slow.  A blown engine.  Groan...  No justice there after a fine and deserving drive.  Cookie would sink to a lowly P11.

Free and clear now with Juha miles up the road and Hiro some 20 seconds behind in P4, I just cruised in for the last several laps to a reasonably satisfying P3.

Some others had some notable drives.  Fester worked wonders in the GT40 with a terrific P5 finish.  Super job, Steve!  Sam nailed down P6 but it might have been P5 if I hadn’t punted him off the road at mid-distance.  Sorry again, SB.  Sky and Sergio did creditable jobs in their GT40's.  JonnyO showed the value of persistence in scooping P8 and Nigel endured the Mk4 to claim P10.  Pity that we lost Al so early in his Mk4.

Hristo made a wrong stop and go combined with his mandatory pitstop. During a lap, he made two resets and then he made a single pitstop with its wait time while...there is no trace of S&G corresponding to the reset he made. The rule says they cannot be combined. Please check it.

I see you're on a mission to stain my name, Sergio. Makes you feel better to post it here than just file a report like is normally done? Since when do mods have to do you favors and check situations that nobody reported in? Why didn't you report it yourself but instead choose to post here? The rules (which you obviously love so much) say reports have to be filed for something to be examined outside lap 1, so please grow a spine and a brain, and learn how to race, before you dare judge me.  ::)
