Title: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Privateers Trophy (67) - Zolder (1965-72) - Jul 15
Post by: Ross Neilson on July 12, 2012, 09:20:50 PM +0100
The teams' transporters head north from Barcelona to Zolder in Belgium for round three of the Privateers Trophy. A victorious return for Martin Hunt last time out proves that early leader David Rainier won't have it all his own way this season. Please note we are using the new version of Zolder, as opposed to the old version which appeared on the Works calendar last season.

Really enjoyed this. I hadn't driven this track and I hadn't touched the Honda for a year or so. So... Major guess at a setup and light up the screens with a 1:41... ah well only ten seconds behind Phil.

Just trolled round. Caught Martin by surprise with how slow I was so he passed with a classic through the pipes move ;)

Caught him later smoking behind the bike sheds...

One by one, people fell off in front of me and I managed 6th in the end which is my best Privs result. Drove within myself and just tried to keep it on the black stuff. Hope I got out of the way OK. I tried to. Even though I was really slow, I was improving and got some rewards for persistence.

WD to Phil - name on the trophy already?

Another new track!  Downloaded last night & gave it a dozen or so laps.

With all that greenery/those trees/that bump - Mosport setup was lucky again!
Probably just me/my driving - but track seemed very slippery & narrow...

Initial Honda running gave about 1:37-1:38 [& that would surely not scare any of the front-mid runners...] but certainly a second or so quicker than my Brabham.   However,  very rough Honda lapping - I'd be lucky to complete a couple of laps without taking a corner off!  So, Brabham seemed like a safer bet...

Managed to make it round qually,  so that was a result especially with a new PB.

I guess I was lucky in the race with others dropping a bit like flies.  Bernie was forever there in Pribluda.  I was inching away lap after lap, but it really was very marginal.    Certainly the cat jumping up/walking over the desk & un-related off at T1 & resultant driving around the catch-fencing did not help.  Overall,  I'd say I was lucky!

Grats to the guys ahead;  surely Works teams are looking? :)

Cheers,
Dave.

I think there are several others who have their engraver ready but it was nice to get a hat trick of pole, FL and a win.  Although I lead all the way I had to concentrate hard.  David was close and it would have only taken one small mistake to loose the race.

Really liked the track and once I had adjusted the setup so it didn't bottom out at the jump, the car was stable and fast.  But then it was the Ferrari, it's the only 67 car I'm any good in.  Thankfully I should have enough tokens to ensure I can have the Ferrari for another 5 races this season ;D

Yes they are but the pay is rubbish.  I could be persuaded to drive for the works Ferrari team next year if they provided me with free champagne and decent brolly girls ::)

Practiced the wrong version of Zolder but managed to qualy in 3rd.  Unfortunately I got high-centered on a lump, had to reset and lost my position, eventually got stuck in a fence and couldn't continue.

Grats podium

Try as I might , I couldn't get on terms with this track , to my eyes the complex of corners all looking the same , or very similar , giving problems when trying to find the best line ,  problems finding the  braking point into T1 and think maybe I was losing a second or more hear .

Comes the race and my set up turned out to be a nightmare with the car bottoming out on the hump so concentrated on keeping a clean race sheet and collect a few points while watching Phil and David dissapear into the distance , The "other" Dave D.C. was tantalisingly close enough ahead to tempt an attack but I didn't really feel up to the task so concentrated on finishing with my car and pride intact .

Not sure what happened to mad dog martin magee after he warped past me on lap 1, couldnt believe my eyes , there he was behind and then suddenly appears dead ahead of me , fantastic move , obviously employed some kind of cloaking device  ::)

Or perhaps he'se been practising for the 2012  olympic leap frog team   ;D

Grats to the podium boys and well done to the rest of us finishers ,

I don't wish to complain unduly, and it's outcome can't always be the case, but what bit of skulduggery, caused me to wind up at this track, with the number 13 firmly attached to my bodywork!?  Grumble!  I refuse to accept it's outcome was inevitable, but mine was not a happy one or three, this day.

The Coop needed a rather strange setup to overcome it's adversity, so I was pleasantly surprised to sit, near the front of the grid, until the last few minutes of practice, whence my position plummeted!  What an unfriendly bunch of racers.  Grumble!

My luck seemed to turn once racing commenced - Bernie was slow away, and I passed to the left.  Within 2 laps I was up to 4th, and challenging our new arrival, Andreas in the Lotus.  But that's when my luck turned again - the Coop. refused to kink, mid-way along the kinked back straight, and I became yet another victim to the chicken wire - very odd. ::)

Once S & G'd, I recommenced behind a rather fast Honda, up until the 4th corner.  It seems, whilst inquiring as to the cars ownership, it's occupant stopped being evasive - and hence, I owe Badblood an apology.

Thereafter, I was enveloped in a cloud of black smoke, and this spread to the car soon after.  We spluttered around for a few laps, as it seemed the thing to do, prior to disintegration.

A masterful drive from teammate Phil, and not a trace of no.13 about him . . . grumble! >:(
