Title: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Formula 2 Trophy - Porto - Jul 20
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on July 14, 2012, 12:01:17 AM +0100
THIS POST IS FOR THE LIGHT & HEAVY RACES

On to Round 3 of the Formula 2 European Tour takes us south to a Portuguese street circuit. The Portuguese Grand Prix was a motorsports event held for several years, mostly in the 1950s and then in the 1980s and 90s. It was a Formula One race between 1958 and 1960 and between 1984 and 1996.
The first event was held on the Boavista street course in Porto on 17 June 1951 as a sports car race. The Grand Prix was moved to Monsanto Park, Lisbon, in 1954 as a one-off. The first Formula One race was held in 14 August 1958 in Boavista, won by Stirling Moss in a Vanwall.

After two rounds with free choice of chassis, handicapping now applies to the top three drivers in each Division.
LIGHTS Mark Barresi – Ferrari or Brabham BT14. Evil Clive & Alex Barresi -  Ferrari, Brabham BT14 or Cooper.
HEAVY Rainier – Ferrari or Brabham BT14. Billy & Rog UK -  Ferrari, Brabham BT14 or Cooper.

The series will be run on two separate grids; The Lights (on T7) & the Heavys (on UKGPL 3). Please ensure you join the correct race. The Driver list is shown below & the Championship Table can be found here F2 European Tour (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=366&theme=6)

Unlimited resets are allowed but every Shift R must be followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane. If you Reset on the last lap a 30 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.

In line with other divisions the races will be subject to full moderation  in the red zone which will be to the exit of the corner entering Avendia de Antunes Guimareras. The Moderator may chose to investigate any other incident, in addition to reported incidents & red zone incidents.

Please note that for Season 23 UKGPL has introduced a system of penalties within each series  for drivers accumulating yellow cards – see here
Penalty Points (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring these penalties will receive a PM advising when a penalty has been applied & what race it should served.

Thanks Cookie.

Apologies I won't be able to make this one. Hopefully there will be a few fun race to get me through the summer break. With no football I will seriously be in danger of having to talk to the wife!

For some reason Porto58 runs only on OpenGl_V2 on T7 server so I've set to 16 laps Long race and is listening on Igor on Console session.

Like Porto and usually go Ok here.

Very poor from me and also had my first lap 1 incident in a long time involving another car. Apologies to evil for the touch at the end of the straight. Looked like i was coming in fast but it was under control via my normal braking spot, but i accept it was my fault. Apologies.

Went to pieces after that. Can do lap after lap here normally, but 3 resets later, time to pull into the pits and call it a day.

Not too hot on my F2 knowledge in that, is the Ferrari supposed to be one of the slower cars? (my poor driving excluded).

3 stops sorted my race for me- the hay bales on the first turn grabbed me several times and I only really found my rhythm with about 5 laps to go. Well done to those on the podium.

No apology necessary mate. I should have seen you coming and left more room :-\ I was being ultra cautious on lap 1 because there are usually a few cars exchanging paint samples at that corner  ;)

I was way off the pace of the fast boys here by about 3 secs a lap so getting onto the podium was a real bonus. Even that was courtesy of Nicky throwing his car into the bales at the final turn and allowing me to sneak through.

Difficult track and difficult race.

I was 2nd on the grid, and quickly had a rear end shunt by Dave Curtis on the 1st lap, I was surprised by  Phil T 's early braking but Dave C was too close on the 1st lap where evrybody must be very cautious.
Then my Dino was very slow until I have a new accident when Penning lost the control at the end of the 4th lap. so I had to make a Stop'n'go.
I did all what I can to reduce the gap with RogUK and was close to succeed but each time I made an error.
With all these problems, I can be satisfy of my final 3rd !

I should stay 1st at the championship unless penalty by the moderation, so next race again with the Dino in Montjuich in September   !

Wasn't expecting much in the way of results here going on practise performance , so was completely taken by surprise with my start which got me into the lead going into T1 , didnt last long as i did my usual trick of sticking it in the straw bales  starting lap 4 , had to s/r and the resulting s&g dropped me further down the order , then prib started telling fibs saying that Dave R was just up the road so I pushed hard to try tp close the gap , but by this stage in the race my talent was beging to run out , resulting in furthe crashes , spins and general imitation of a combined harvester which at least kept the crowds amused .

Grats to Phil and the pods ,   looking forward to Montjuich for some costa del fun  ;D

.......... I was surprised by  Phil T 's early braking ........
Sorry David, I was just trying to be careful on lap 1.  The tyres were cold and I was on the unfamiliar inside line (I wasn't sure it was safe to move onto the racing line) so I had to be a bit conservative.  I'd outbraked myself several times in qually.

Grats on retaining the championship lead, this is shaping up to be a competitive championship.

I'd had a quick look at GPL rank before the race to see what a fast lap was.  The WR times were in the 1:21 area so I was very pleased with my fastest lap in the 1:19s.  That was until I looked at the lights times.  To be 8 seconds under the old WR time is unbelievable LOL.  Grats H, you've lost none of your speed during your sabbatical :)

Thanks, but those were with slipstream. Normally I was into 15-16.

Bad, bad, bad. My car was either very slow, or with very bad setup... tho it looked alright. I could have maybe done 2.19 with slipstream, but no one gave me any. I even couldnt pass Goran, had good run at the long straight, went to the left... and car just stayed alongside. In result I missed the braking point, wondering wtf is wrong with the engine, and went into haybales... these cars are damn tanks, luckily. Goran was even worse than that tho, at the lap before... he had good run on me on the same straight... and went to the left... and alongside... and right again...into me. Who can mess the simplest pass possible, I don't know, but I guess fast drivers drive just as bad as the slow ones, just faster. I'm looking around at the divs I'm in... i have no chance to get a win or podium in any of the incoming races. Well, maybe next year... If I get to -60 rank till then... and im still alive...and stuff...

Worse, worse, worse, yes but no. My race worse, my pass on you Sky, worse but if you count me as a fast driver I do not agree about that fast drivers drive as bad as the slow ones, yesterday was the exception that proves the rule and it was not only the pass on you.

I was in 3Rd on the grid but H on pole did a poor start so I had to lift of a bit and Al passed me. After some minor tangle in T1 the order was H, Tris, Al and me. But soon Tris begun his drive-fast-go-off thing and being coward, or we can call it cautious if you like, I let him pass me a couple of times and Al disappeared in the distance. That was the scene for about 5 laps until I begun my Tris-copy-cat-rutin.

The pass on Sky was an one in a milion stunt that I never before done, the thing was that I used the "look right" button so see where he was and by doing so I turned the wheel a bit to the right, my "look right" button is the gear shifting paddle, and of cause there was Sky, so a big sorry to Sky and all the other drivers that were affected by the incident.

And I must say that this is the standard F2 race for me so far this season. It is kind of weird because I do not do in in Pro or Historic just in F2. So I guess I must use the summer brake to figure out my F2 driving.

Göran

PS. I can assure you Sky that I will get penalised if you report me.

Well... I reported it... I can assure you I'll be penalized 50 points for not exiting the track and blocking it or something... well, lets see what mess they do with my report. Whatever...

I'd forgotten how much fun this track was. Lucky to survive a big nudge up the rear from someone on the run down to T1 & then found myself elevated to 3rd behind H & Tris. That soon became 2nd when Tris went off at the end of the long straight on lap 1. There was no way I could keep pace with H & stay on the track, so I ran at my own speed & braced myself for Goran and/or Tris to appear in my mirrors... sure enough Tris soon blasted past me on the straight only to immediately spin off again under braking (brake balance issues?) After that I guessed Tris had some damage as it took him several laps before he reappeared but this time he swept past me cleanly. With a 20 second lead over Nicky in 4th I concentrated on not making any mistakes to try & hold down 3rd, but later on rather undeservedly inherited 2nd after Tris disconnected. So a bit of a lonely race but actually that was quite a welcome change after so many full-on battles in the other divisions ;) Well done H - bad luck Nicky to lose 3rd on the last corner but a terrific drive by Clive in the underpowered Cooper.

Big hand to the podium ones :  Hristo on pole , win & fastes lap , wd . ; Al on 2nd  , nice drive with most consistency ; Clive catching 3rd & made the Cooper faster then a speeding duck .
3rd would have been extreme undeserved to me , looking at my poor speed . Never got sort of close to my offline PB of 1-19-23 ( which is maybe medium fast ,lol ) .
Anyroads , race was big fun and mainly I was pleased my last minute repair , I had to do on my new Thrustmaster Rs500 pedals , did work . ( snap ring of a main bolt , which stabilized the whole rear of the pedal set case was gone ) .  AND no freeze/black screen ! ( did remove ATI tray tools & reinstall catalyst 9.12 ) should I knock on wood ?

Real bad luck for Tris getting discoed ….

Remembered there may be a race approx 11PM the night before.  Unfortunately upon checking, was not Zandy as expected! (I missed that one - Silverstone clash).  Instead was another new track,  so time to download & get a half-dozen laps done.
Not knowing the place, was happy enough with a 2:29 with a Pribluda suggestion of 2:28 being possible [although that was presumably going to be waaay off a half-decent time].

Was particularly surprised to have found myself in what was looking like a 4th position on the grid with a 2:24 after 1 lap!  Was slightly relieved I then lost a place in the closing moments - not used to being so far forward.

Inheriting 4th from the start was welcome,  but again - unfamiliar territory.

Apologies teamie for the shunt (unforgivable & just before the end of the redzone too...).   I thought I was being careful,  but clearly way too close at the time of impact  :-[

Of course, for insurance purposes 'no comment'. No excuse, but was just caught out there under breaking.  Although, maybe that photographer peering round the back of that VW camper van was using a flash. Hmm...

Then I was battling with the scenery, particularly the entrance to the train tracks at T1.  I never managed to get my car in there though, despite multiple attempts.

A bit of a comedy detour round the back of the circuit via the perimeter road at lap 11.  Apart from that, a pretty miserable show.

Looks like the rest of the season is practically new (to me) circuits too. Oh, joy!

Cheers,
Dave.

Congrats Hristo, Al, and Evil       Cheers

Even with a tow, a 2:13 is a massive lap. Superb Hristo   :thumbup1:

I was well off the pace for this race. For some reason I don't appreciate Porto even though it is a fine track. Insults were flying after T1 lap 1 and I gained some spots. I was satisfied to just stay in touch with Sky and try and keep my nose clean. Saw a Cooper stuck in the haybales early and a few laps later Sky and Goran had a coming together in front of me. I was slow but managed to avoid any major offs. Evil was flying in the Cooper and soon went around me. I learned a bit behind him and increased my pace as a result. A loss of traction by Evil had me back in front and I was slowly gaining on Nicky with Evil gaining on me as well. With a couple laps to go I went in too hot at T1 and lost it. Thankfully Evil managed to get by without collecting me in the process. Had another spin later in the lap trying too hard and came home a fortunate p5. Better than I should have achieved with the disco's and other issues but I'll take it. That's racing right ?

Great pace in the Coop Evil   :thumbup1:

Tough luck Nicky. Nice race

Podium Al does it again. WD

Peace

RJ

Hi,

I'm yet to delve into the F2 cars but I'm keen to do so. Has anyone found any decent setups yet? I'm a big fan of Steve Cloyd's setups but he isn't making any for the F2 cars. Any pointers?

I have a lot of Protos setups, having only driven that for a full season in Mybroga, but the BT23 setup I did for this race also felt quite nice. I will upload them later and post a link.

Here are all the F2 setups I have:

http://racingleague.co.cc/hikiwaza/downloads/Hristo%20F2%20Setups.zip

Setups for some tracks are older than those for others and thus not as good, because I was still learning, experimenting, improving on them over time. Also, use the latest setup for each track, according to the letters and numbers in the file name. The abbreviations are as this:

q2b - means qualifying setup, version 2, sub version b.
r1 - means race setup, version 1, sub version a (omitted in the name).

I usually always start with developing a qualifying setup after copying over a setup from another track, so the race setup is usually derived from the last version of qualifying setup.

One thing that really helps with these cars is tire pressure. Even if it sacrifices some corner stability, pumped up tires really help straight line speed, more than I've noticed in other mods (though perhaps it's the same in GT mod, but handling there is usually more important).
