Title: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Formula 2 Trophy - Montjuich Park - Sep 7
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on September 03, 2012, 10:51:21 PM +0100
THIS POST IS FOR THE LIGHT & HEAVY RACES

Round 4 restarts the Formula 2 European Tour. We stay in Iberia, crossing from Portugal to Spain for the classic street circuit at Motjuich Park.  The circuit was the venue for the Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix from 1950 to 1968, and then hosted F1 cars on even-numbered years until 1976. The last F1 Grand Prix held there in 1975, is notable for a fatal crash that led to Formula One abandoning the venue.

The best description I can think of for turn 1 is “vicious”.

Handicapping now applies to the top three drivers in each Division.
LIGHTS Evil Clive – Ferrari or Brabham BT14. Hristo & Mark Barresi -  Ferrari, Brabham BT14 or Cooper.
HEAVY Rainier – Ferrari or Brabham BT14. Rog UK  & Phil Thornton -  Ferrari, Brabham BT14 or Cooper.

The series will be run on two separate grids; The Lights (on T7) & the Heavys (on UKGPL 3). Please ensure you join the correct race. The Driver list is shown below & the Championship Table can be found here F2 European Tour (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=366&theme=6)

Unlimited resets are allowed but every Shift R must be followed by a Stop & Go in the pit lane. If you Reset on the last lap a 30 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.

In line with other divisions the races will be subject to full moderation  in the red zone which will be to the exit of the Vias corner. The Moderator may chose to investigate any other incident, in addition to reported incidents & red zone incidents.

Please note that for Season 23 UKGPL has introduced a system of penalties within each series  for drivers accumulating yellow cards – see here
Penalty Points (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring these penalties will receive a PM advising when a penalty has been applied & what race it should served.

I had 2 freezes in the 2 BREASTS races after about 7 laps each...

Is it the track? Are there known issues?

The track ran fine with 67s I think, although I do remember some people experiencing freezes back then as well? Not really sure, but I've raced a couple of times on it over the years and never had a freeze myself. Probably a combination of factors, as usual.

Now I changed my track from the high-res to the lite version...

I hope this will prevent another freeze!

I'm not sure what happened last night with the BREASTS races.

I joined the first race (36fps) no probs and enjoyed the fun...no freezes just ran out of fuel 2 laps from the end!!   :-\

I tried multiple time to join the second race (60fpsV2newmod and every other 60fps option) but each time I was informed

" You are not qualified to join this server!???" ) so I had to give up  :(

I ran the 60 fps off line with no probs, so I am not sure what changed from race 1 to race 2?

That's usually when a ping limit is set, perhaps it was set way too low?

I assume that would be set at the server? because I certainly never change anything like that at my end. I have never adjusted any "ping" settings since I started GPL on line.

could imagine it happend cause your core.ini settings didnt fit to the one my server did use for 60fps .

net_mdm_client_send_every =5
net_mdm_client_send_size = 84                ; Client packet size on dialup
net_mdm_server_send_every =5
net_mdm_server_send_size = 132

here you can download a tiny smart programm called GPLCore35 makes necessary changes when switching between 36fps and 60fps easily done :

No, I meant the server setting a ping limit, but it's probably not that. Most likely what Nicky said.  :)

To the best of my knowledge there were no particular problems with the  pre-season test race & 67 championship races at Montjuic. I had a disco at Watkins for the mid-season 69X race - so even papy originals aren't immune. I suggest we keep to the advertised schedule & go ahead. FINGERS CROSSED!

T7 server is set to 24 laps Long race and listening on Igor with OpenGL_V2 on Console session.
I can't race cause my right eye doesn't tear yet so I can't stay along at pc.
Ciao

Disco or screen freeze? When people say disco I assume it means disconnecting from the server, not the game crashing.

If there's room left over for a reserve in the Heavies will give this one a go to shake off some more rust. Will probably be tootling around at the back but I'm an old hand at being lapped :-\

That was an experience - after 6 months out downloading new tracks and learning them in Qually is not the best option. Anyway didn't completely embaress myself; well I out Quallied Paul - just joking mate ;) (fair dues Paul slaughtered me in the race proper).

Anyway lack of track knowledge wouldn't fair well over 24 laps. Clunky engine (must have been the armco bumps) followed by a reset and pit. After that I was hitting the armco so much I was in danger of having my gonads chopped for Persistent Railriding (not on purpose honest) so decided to bow out gracefully. At least I know to put in more practice as the rust has gone deep.

Nice to be back though and well done to whoever is the winner(s).

With 3 laps to go my fuel went low and I wanted to make a s+r but it did not work...

Shame these beasts eat more than the setup promisses! ( I had fuel for 26 laps!)

You'll get up to speed pretty soon Tim.  The default set ups on these cars are very good.  I just added and extra 10 lbs to the front and rear roll bars and with the right amount of fuel in and they fly.  You have made a tough track choice for a come-back.  Silverstone is next, a familiar track with some run-off if you need it - hopefully not!

 :) :)
Congratulation to winner and podium ones !!
Nice world record Hristo  .

Well , I was good prepared for this race . did worked out an nice friendly race-setup serves average mid 1-33-xx times offline and PB qually offline was 1-32-85 . Even fuel load for 24laps long run was tested (30litre minimum ) .
Wasn’t worried about being 0,8sec slower online later then in practise .
Everything felt fine.  start was ok  as well being touched at Rosaleda  on first lap wasn’t something to complain on .
But soon I noticed just been close behind a car everything went wrong. Unstable under braking , too late turn in , nervous exit , tremendous side drift in fast and mid fast corners and most horrible unexplainable side contacts with armcos.
Once I did not had any car in front , everything was ok and my laptimes dropped down over a second to 1-33-xx and I could always catch up pretty fast …
It was like in the old days , stranded on a bad internet-connection combined with cheap Ethernet hardware .
Pretty unsure if it is something particular on Montjuich , as I had no fps drops at all , as well no significant warp on other cars . Cant say any on what lag meter said , as my red bar was greyed out , strangely .
Well watching server replay , I got the impression I wasn’t the only one got these above described effects .
My question : does the use off lite or standard version of Montjuich track reduce it ?
( I used highres version ) .

All in all it was great fun , did had some very nice close battling with Al over several laps.
Even I never wasn’t able too pass him , it was tremendous fun .

Yes, it seems so!
After changing from high-res to the light version I had way smoother driving

...well I out Quallied Paul...

Nice to see Mr V back out there but sadly for Tim, outqualifying me didn't amount to much. It was a case of "when Chief Mods go bad"... Phil is badly letting us down!

Sorry to Jonny for bashing him around on Lap 2 but Dave gave me a fair biff to make up for it...

Fun but hard. Difficult to even let the leaders past.

I was third on the grid, and third too during the 5 ou 6 first laps just behind Phil and RogUK.
Then I tried to overtake RogUk at the turn 1 (probably the only place where overtaking is possible in Montjuich) and our cars very softly collided but I made a brutal action with my steering wheel to avoid a big collision with Rog ...and my steering wheel was removed from my table  :-\

of course, it was not possible to drive and to fix again my steering wheel on the table ...so I only tried to finish the race and to keep my 3rd position.
after JonnyO disconnection,  it was more easy and I was happy to finish 3rd in such driving conditions !

Now Rog is the new F2 leader, and so I should have a more competitive car in Snetterton... and, I hope, a more stable steering wheel  ;)

Luckily it was not a full grid! :)

Got back late really late from a day at the Olympic park - it was hot there; so of course we had to support the official lager supplier  :)    But not too much support of course!

So, no time for any qually laps.  It was then I found out that apparently I've never driven a F2 here before. I could have sworn there was a test a couple of months back too!

So luckily the default settings even had the correct amount of fuel.  Well, thought I should stick another gallon in - you never know;  maybe I would not have to shift-R & that initial fuel may have to make it to the end!

Starting right at the back,  I was expecting to avoid any incidents/maybe even gain something...
I soon remembered that hump when I hit it at near full-speed!

Sorry to Jonny for bashing him around on Lap 2 but Dave gave me a fair biff to make up for it...

At least the Red-Zone was out of the way ;)      Seriously though,  it looked as if you needed some help to get shiny-side up.    Also, didn't look as if the incident had enough flames initially;  so happy to help make it look a little more dramatic.

Overall, I was probably lucky.   A few mini-battles at times (I count being on the same corner as another a car a battle!).
Don't know what happened to JonnyO;    I think we were exchanging lost time against the barriers,  but once he was past - he was pulling away corner after corner.  Then suddenly over the hill & far away;  although that was apparently due to a disco.   But honestly,   I was only ahead prior to that due to misfortune elsewhere,  so it really was not going to last long.

I've only been round here a relative few times in total;  but it seems that it works with the tamed F2 machines.

No apparent frame-rate issues this time out,  unlike the 67 (?) test.
Maybe that was due to lighter grid,  running at the back,  then running alone/with 1 other car at any one time.   I think I may have hi-res (not sure which version I ended up with last year) & have been testing out on a 'borrowed' 1920x1080 monitor at around 50% graphics level.  Maybe a little choppy at the edges of the monitor (but who looks there anyway) - but that would probably be improved when we all move to 60 FPS :)

Anyway, cheers for the run.  The guys in front were running away & maybe it just pays to be kinda slow but not involved in too much stuff.

Dave.

Hehe - thanks!

Enjoyed 'battling' you when you lapped me! That crash was weird though. I lost it at T1 under braking and hit the barriers - recovered and Johnny and I touched I think (big dose of warp on my replay) I set off and as soon as I touched the brakes for the right hander the car span wildly - I had obviously done some real damage.... <sigh> race over in real terms although I was pleased with the start and the first lap.

But having just seen the server replay for the lap2 incident;  unfortunately no flames there.  Still, good to see you got out of there ok!

Also - hey!  That fountain has flowing water!

Major computer problems last night.
Don't think there was a problem with the track - just my PC hard drive rattling away doing anything other than GPL. I started several quallifying laps only to get screen freezes - apologies to anyone I may have unintentionally blocked.
A major screen freeze just before the race started meant I was unable to join. Overall, very frustrating as I my practice times were good enough to compete for a podium - but not threat to Phil.

Had a great race loved the track, but could not keep up with Phil, apologies to Rainer RE (Then I tried to overtake RogUk at the turn 1 (probably the only place where overtaking is possible in Montjuich) and our cars very softly collided but I made a brutal action with my steering wheel to avoid a big collision with Rog ...and my steering wheel was removed from my table) if that was my fault.
