Title: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Novices Trophy (65) - Riverside - Sep 25
Post by: BadBlood on September 23, 2012, 06:53:12 PM +0100
The Novices Trophy moves to California to visit dusty LA and the re-booted Riverside 71 track. This version from Ginetto fixes the issues with previous versions.

Tricky and twisty, the Novices will tackle 21 laps on this dustbowl.

In line with the new handicapping system, only the series leader is chassis restricted. None of us are close enough to the invincible Rob Venn to require it! He can slow down if he wants company ;)

Handicapped Driver(s)Allowed Chassis
Rotaxmax125BT7

Please check the Season 23 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=359&theme=6) regarding rules and the Novices Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=364&theme=6) pages in particular.

Qualifying may start before 9pm, if so, Reserve drivers should leave the server when 35 minutes of qualifying remains and only rejoin when 30 minutes of qualifying is left. This is to ensure that Full Time drivers get priority in joining.

Please restrict chat to pit messages if necessary, and this includes the end of the race, until all running drivers have completed the necessary laps.

The Novice Trophy races are run under Int Long rules and all incidents in the Lap 1 red zone will be moderated and reported incidents for the rest of the race, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident. Drivers can take UNLIMITED Shift-R but MUST take a Stop n Go for each one. The Red Zone is start to the exit of turn 8 (see below).

Please ensure you are aware of the new in-series penalties for this season. Details are here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring a penalty will receive a PM informing them of this."

Please submit incident reports within a week after the race so that the moderators report may be out before the next race.

Riverside is a great track with a few tricky corners but I have enjoyed learning the circuit. I really hope for a trouble free race this week. I ran in the F2's on friday and came unstuck with pc trouble again so iv'e re format my new pc (some windows updates would not install) and have new graphics drivers, I'm also going to run opengl instead of direct3d, I should have no auto updates or firewall issues so hopefully I've covered everything...fingers crossed :)

Fabulous race - someone crashed into me at T1 L1 so I had to work up from last but did that OK and got past Dave C to get fourth but I could not shake him off and then a mistake going into the last straight as I strained to hold him off let Bill and Phillipe past. Took Dave out.

BIG APOLOGIES to Mr. C.  He was really clean and deserved better.

Totally gutted at 6th which maybe shows how far I have come but don't know where Phillipe found his pace - termendous. Very close all the way down...

@Boggy - wd - my first races I was finishing five laps down and you are shaping up well mate.

Well, despite not being the fullest of grids - there was certainly a lot going on!

I had a run here the other night & 1:56 seemed pretty good to me.  Don't know where that qually lap came from.
My 'fast' race lap was almost certainly due to being pulled down the straight.  Maybe there is quite a tow to be had in GPL!

I don't think there was a dull moment.  I didn't even get to have my 'for after the race' drink down the straight!

Cheers all,
Dave.

Many thanks Paul
I felt like a rolling roadblock and glad I didn't spoil anyones race. As a Novice novice I am in awe of you guys. I know I am trying too hard and overdriving the car, hopefully the confidence will come
Cheers all and well done to all the podium
Boggy

When climbing into bed after the race the Mrs says " it must have gone alright I didn't here any swearing" and as always she was right. I qualified 2nd but couldn't quite find enough to match Rob, a great effort in the bt7. I got a slow start in the race as my first gear was bigger for the race and this probably contributed to me getting tangled up at turn 1. I headed for the pits at the end of lap 1 then set about catching the field. When I caught up to badblood in the Honda I thought I may have had a little in hand but in race trim  he was quick. With 12 to go I was passing the start line 1 second behind badblood when my screen faded black...power saving.....forgot about that, some frantic keyboard slapping and then coax it off the grass with not too much harm done, not sure where I eventually got past. I got up to third with Nigel 10 seconds in front but he must have had a moment as I caught him to within a few seconds and had a great last few laps to sneak past on the last lap. My first silver medal and I am so pleased. Well done to Rob and well raced all.

This track really took some learning, quite a few places where choice of gear was worth half a second.
Relatively pleased to start P3 & improved to 2nd when Johnny had a slow start. I remember three trips into the scenery which changed position from 2nd to 7th to 4th to 6th depending on other peoples misfortunes. Should have stayed that way but Paul & Dave C had an altercation on the last lap - gifting me 4th.
Nice track - which we get to run again in the 67's on Sunday.
Classy drive from Rob in the BT7 & for a change Johnny's computer didn't sabotage his race.
Not looking forward to the next race at Clermont!

Wondered where you went. You were really quick after that though. I losts loads of time when Boggy's car literally disappeared in front of me just as I was passing him on the big final turn. Frantic move to avoid him (which probably wasn't needed) put me in the wall and cost me 4 or 5 seconds.

Fantastic race from you Johnny. Well done to Bill on his late snaffling of places which might get better once somebody has reviewed the Smith sandwich at T1! I can't look at that as I am involved. Not sure it is looking good though Nigel! Lol.

Poor preparation, very tired, I hope I did not upset anyone.
I hope that here will be better in the next race for me.
thank you paul
Congratulations to the podium

You were there at the last lap to take advantage Phillipe. If you are disappointed with your fastest lap then you have improved massively.

Everyone has, it seems.

Took me three seasons to get competitive...

No, the 2nd track is only a charade of the 1st one.  Though the second one came first, of the 2, the first is 1st rate , in my opinion. :)

I have never spent so much time upside down when trying to learn a new track, Clermont is a nightmare. I think our new racer boggy has had a Baptism of fire with first riverside and now this.

Hi
Well Johnny " Baptism of fire"?? Ive spent the last two days rubbing my helmet on the tarmac and to make things worse after reading this thread again just realized I'm on the wrong Charade track, Charad 70 when I should be on Charade for 65s. Oh well c'est la vie as they say over here. One for Paul, can we have some French flags for nationality on leader board??
Cheers
Boggy

The flags are set according to your own profile. So you need to go into your profile and select France as your country. Just click on your own name in the results table to get into your profile.

Look at the standings and you will see the tricolour flying proudly for Rouen and Clermont...

Hi Paul
Cheers for that I was changing my location in the wrong part of my profile.
Still trying to learn the track, think I may spend all the race keeping out of everyones way, sorry for disappearing in front of you causing your trip to the wall ???
Cheers

Hey - maybe someone should start the Clermont race-thread;   then we'd have somewhere to put the pre-event moaning :)

Yeah,  looks very nice.  Plenty of opportunities to examine the scenery - real close up!   I think there may be a lot of pitlane activity...

You guys really like loading up the various series with mystery tracks,  eh?!

Actually, on a (slightly) serious note - it would be kinda interesting if there was a race sometime where none of the participants had actually seen the track beforehand.   If popular,  maybe could even lead to a GPL treasure-hunt-rally series of its own  (winner receives some record tokens; or virtual leather-backed driving gloves...)

I'll be seeing you from the ditch.  Be sure to wave on your way past!

Cheers,
Dave.

Hi Dave,

Imagine what it was like, to show up at these long tracks as an actual driver, with your life on the line!   The best they could hope for the first time out, was survival. :helpsmilie:

GPL is all about realistic racing.  Clermont was an actual Grand Prix track, so if they could do it, you can do it.  Modern drivers who become professionals, suddenly have to compete on lots more international tracks.  Same thing here with our International stars, but without the pay.  :taz:

I like the pre event moaning- it's usually witty with one or two sandbaggers for good measure. Speaking of times 3.20 has been done by Hristo in the Bt7... I hope Rob is not that quick. For such a long track it is very narrow with plenty of crashing opportunities.

There was a Novs race here long a go
https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=7107#event1881
this will give you an idea of the lap times - although I'd pretty much ignore those sub 3.30 as those drivers are now in the Pro Division. I really dislike this track & didn't bother to take part in Season 18. Not sure if my pain tolerances have increased since then!

My best here is 3:47 and I am beginning to wonder why I picked it... in truth I think we can't improve unless we have a variety although the difference between this and Norisring is possibly a bit TOO much!

Only done a few laps at the next track and I like it. I'm hoping for a fun race.

It's a tricky beast to get right and I'm not where near yet. Got about a week to get some more pratice in before the race, and I'll need every lap I can get.

I remember this track for one particular race by one of the very best although the unluckiest ever grand prix driver .

After switching from the Ferrari team to the French Matra team at the end of 1970 New Zealander Chris Amon absolutely dominated the 1972 French GP at Clermont-Ferrand, leaving his rivals in the dust as he stormed away from the field.

Then a puncture intervened, he pitted for fresh tyres – and finished third.
