Title: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Novices Trophy (65) - Silverstone - Oct 23
Post by: BadBlood on October 19, 2012, 12:11:17 PM +0100
The Novices Trophy comes back to Blighty and the spiritual home of the British Grand Prix - Silverstone. This is the classic layout (before they mucked it up). A flowing circuit that is all about keeping the speed up through the corners but mind those kerbs. Get too greedy at Beckets or Abbey and you will end up facing the wrong way.

High speed and one fast line through the corners. What could possibly go wrong for the Novices?

In line with the new handicapping system, only Rob is handicapped - It might make a difference here but I am not banking on it. Rob seems to LIKE the BT7!!!

Handicapped Driver(s)Allowed Chassis
Rotaxmax125BT7

Please check the Season 23 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=359&theme=6) regarding rules and the Novices Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=364&theme=6) pages in particular.

Qualifying may start before 9pm, if so, Reserve drivers should leave the server when 35 minutes of qualifying remains and only rejoin when 30 minutes of qualifying is left. This is to ensure that Full Time drivers get priority in joining.

Please restrict chat to pit messages if necessary, and this includes the end of the race, until all running drivers have completed the necessary laps.

The Novice Trophy races are run under Int Long rules and all incidents in the Lap 1 red zone will be moderated and reported incidents for the rest of the race, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident. Drivers can take UNLIMITED Shift-R but MUST take a Stop n Go for each one. The Red Zone is start to the exit of turn 8 (see below).

Please ensure you are aware of the new in-series penalties for this season. Details are here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring a penalty will receive a PM informing them of this."

Please submit incident reports within a week after the race so that the moderators report may be out before the next race.

I'm sorry, but I stopped running in mod 65!
It serves no purpose to prepare the races like I did: first brake out!  :censored:
And do not tell me "why do not you shift-r?"   :nono:
I am disgusted that evening, people think you can win a race at the first corner.
Good luck for the future, and thanks Paul

My car wasn't allowed to join the start grid! I'm not that bad am I? But it was in position 13.

Eventually received a green rectangle to click on and started from the pit lane with a car that had a rectangular solid steering wheel?!? and it obscured the rev counter.

Gave up when it looked like I was going to be lapped.

Bad luck Tony. That sounds like you got the dreaded Brabham-steering-wheel-bug. It only happens in the 65's (pretty rarely) & only with the Brabham BT11 so you're particularly unlucky. You can find the fix here: http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=5917 (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=5917).

Not joining the grid is an odd one - did you click the green box before the 30 second countdown had elapsed?

That was me Phillipe and I can only apologise. My replay shows that there is space between us but we still explode. I was braking quite hard but I did get a surprise how quickly you were slowing.

My fault though. Pity you didn't Shift-R - we could have battled.

Terrible race. Effed it up at T1 and then spent the race holding Billy off and chasing Adam. Finally caught Adam and pulled off a nice pass at Club only to explode as Adam warped into me.

Was lapping in the 1:34.1s in practice. Couldn't get anything like that tonight. Bad bad bad. Genuinely thought I could win that as well.

Once again Phillipe, mes excuses.

Got the "square" steering wheel on the favoured Brabham! Rejoined the server several times in vain but then changed to the Lotus. Used an old set up which was a bit short on gearing & took half the race to get down to a 1.34 lap.
Bit of a calamity on lap one - was cautious into T1 but couldn't avoid the road block. SnG later at the back of the field & mangaed to claw back a few places up to 7th - mostly thanks the the sqabble between Adam & badblood.
Qually times at the top of the grid were inpressive & would not have disgraced themselves in the higher divisions.

Thanks to Al H for posting the steering wheel fix. I'm sure I would have been quicker in the BT11.

Phillipe - you should have taken a Shift R - your Quallification time was good & even with a SnG you would have been in the mix with me, BB & Adam.

I could have missed that. I was trying to get a traditional shaped steering wheel by re-applying the last car set patch.

BTW Drivers that don't have little flags against their names in the results table should fill out the nationality part of their profile.

I’ve been practicing and practicing for this race and I felt like I was getting nowhere. I didn’t expect to be competitive at all here, and was hoping to be midfield pack. So to be 3rd on the grid was a huge surprise, it was a PB for me and I could not expect a better time. Great time again Giovani.

My race started OK, I got away quite well and held station, I was careful into turn 1 and then all hell broke loose in front of me. I managed to zip zag though the wreckage and found myself first. I didn’t have a huge lead and I watch myself get hauled in from Giovani, Johnny and Rob. It was fairly inevitable but I was happy to be leading. We all had a nice 4 way battle going for a couple of laps, some nice tight racing but it didn’t last, as I slid a little and was tapped from Rob.

After my little solo spin, I was behind my teammate Rog, I am very thankful to Rog for moving over for me. You where very quick and I don’t think I would have been able to pass you without your help. I had about 10 laps to reel back Rob who was about 7 seconds ahead. I finally managed it with 2 laps to go, and we had a little dice for 3rd.  Rob got very out of shape out of one of the turns, and gave me a great run at him, I pulled out to overtake and we were side by side going into the last left hander on the track. I thought Rob knew I was there, but I was obviously in his blind spot and he turned in and we both collided. After my second spin it was just a matter of finishing the last lap.

I had a nightmare in qualifying- gpl kept crashing to desktop when I went into the car settings or options. I also got stuck with a square steering wheel that I tried to get rid of but had to persevere with as I had no other car set up. I qualified 2nd a good distance from pole but got a good start in the race leading into the first turn- somewhere on the lap I was tagged from behind and spun out but fortunately there was no damage so I recovered into fourth or fifth. I had a good few laps trying to pass Rob and ran wide letting Giovanni through. I slowly made progress to the cars battling in front and eventually caught Al who I followed for a couple of laps and sneaked through. Not sure where Giovanni was he was in front and now he was behind? He caught me twice and outbraked or ran wide and I escaped temporarily as he was much quicker and when he did finally pass me I had no answer to his pace. Enjoyable race and well done to Giovanni, also great racing by Rob and Al. I was scared I might miss the race with more pc gremlins.. offline is fine but online always gives me grief ...grrr

Hi all
Well after all that practice and more practice I returned from UK on Sunday ready to go, only to be told by the better half that internet had been off for 2 days and wouldn't be back until wednesday!!! Well its Thursday and just got it back on. Love France but telephone and broadband leave a lot to be desired. Moan over, missed the race but c'est la vie. Well done to everyone sounds like the race after the first few corners was really good and I do hope Phillippe doesn't drop out as I think Novice does mean mistakes will be made. Which version of Zeltweg is the next race? Perhaps a link to each circuit download would be helpful to us newbies!!

You can get squared away with a nice round wheel, by reading Al's post on the previous page.  You could instead go for the realistic ride height patch, which has the fix included.  Or else why not simply use the lite carset, ready and waiting, which was actually designed especially for online use!  It has wheels which remain round at all times - even when detached! ::)

We missed you Boggy. Zeltweg 71 which is here: Zeltweg (http://www.f1legends.ch/update/circuits/zeltweg.php)

The track is listed in the announcements page with links as well.

Good track but careful at T1 and round the Ostkurve. Easy to lose it there.

Come to think of it, it might not be called the Ostkurve. As you go into the long right hander at the end of the straight (Bosch) as long as you take enough speed off, that is easy. If you don't you will be in the wall on the left. After that the long left hander has about fifteen apexes and it is hard to take without either compromising speed or losing it - it is a tricky balance. Ends at Schikane...
