Title: JOE SHAW MEMORIAL TROPHY
Post by: BadBlood on October 23, 2012, 10:05:48 AM +0100
Guys - when do you believe that we should we run this - we have a week off for Half Term so we could run on that last Sunday or we could run it at Christmas.

Alternatively, we could make this an annual event at Easter.

What do you think. And any suggestions for tracks? Maybe a double header?

I know the track has a glitch somewhere but I how about Joe Shaw memorial warm up at Goodwood in the 1965 Mod this Sunday & then schedule something more organised during the Christmas break.
To even things up for all comers Novices can take the BT11 & Pros the BT7 (Inters have a choice of either).

I'll certainly make every effort to participate in Joe's memory.  He was a swell guy.

I keep an icon on my desktop that leads to a jpeg of his last Works season.  Just seeing it every now and then reminds me of him and I occasionally open it in rememberance.  You are missed, Joe.

I have no shame whatsoever in shedding a tear.

Just my gut feel but,

Without wishing to sound morbid, should these races not be run as near as possible to the anniversary of Joe's sad death, if they are to act as a "memorial"?

I agree with Evil, let's keep it as a three race series at Easter each year.

Post by: BadBlood on October 23, 2012, 02:47:03 PM +0100
I agree that the trophy should run once a year as a series but would an additional (non-trophy) Autumn memorial be appropriate.

Mentioning Joe each season would seem important to me.

I see Billy's point, but I would rather agree with Clive and Ross. An annual series to be run over the Easter break, over three races, and in the 67s cars, as thats the number of races that were left to be run in that last Works season that was curtailed by the news about Joe.

I agree with Evil as well. We could run the usual fun races between seasons and around Christmas/New Year though.

Seems we have a concensus about running running a 3 race mini-series in the Easter break.

Trust that no disprespect will be inferred but I will arrange a race at Goodwood on this coming Sunday. Post to follow.

I agree with running it at Easter, as H says, we generally have fun races at random times throughout the year and of course between seasons.

This is the first and thus far only online community that I have been a member of.  I am proud to be a part of such a compassionate community that genuinely cares about it's members.  Even though we are a virtual community, there's a lot of heart and soul on display.

Thank you to you all for continuing to keep Joe's memory alive and for all your kind words.

We are going to be at the Nurburgring at Easter and plan to place some of his ashes at the side of the track.

We would welcome suggestions as to best place on the circuit to do so, maybe somewhere that is the most challenging or exciting!

He is already in residence at Brands Hatch on the inside of Druids, a place he loved to spectate and take pictures as a young boy and I hope that later this year and beyond he will be at Goodwood, Silverstone, Donnington, Malory and Oulton.

On the 16th March he should be racing with me on-board his old Porsche 924 at Snetterton in the MSV Tack Day Trophy. I hope some of his talent may rub off on me. :)

Best regards

Malcolm

Flugplatz is challenging and it is a place where cars get airborne. Closer to the sky and away from the earth. It might be especially aproppriate place since youre doing it at Easter.
Good luck at Snetterton.

Sure I did not know Joe. Only read here in this forum about that young man. Makes me really sad...
The idea to place some of his ashes at the side of the track I really like. Did not know that something like that is allowed in Britain. Sadly in Germany it is "verboten". But you mean for sure the Nordschleife, or? Because Nürburgring is only the Modern Track. My suggestion is Fuchsröhre, it is also challenging and exciting as well! A place where only the best keep it flat out and where it divides the man from the boys.

Please tell your choice here after your vote for the place, because in the summer I will be driving around the Nordschleife and will greet him when I pass that place.

Best regards

Andreas

Just returned from Goodwood after spending a weekend with Bill ( no-brakes) and Andy  ( we had the pleasure of Tim Vos's company on Friday as well). Total immersion in classic car racing and Castrol R  ;D Good weather great racing and in the company of like minded petrol heads made it a terrific weekend.

The late night discussions in our caravan over GPL, and anything else you care to think about, made absolute sense at the time but in the cold light of dawn one wonders if  the empty cans and bottles lined up in the kitchen had any influence upon rational thought??  There was a lot of reference to biscuits and men but opinion was divided 50/50....... Andy might be able to explain.

We met up with Malcolm and Beverly and shared some beer when Andy had to have the prestigious Joe Shaw Trophy prised from his grasp. Unfortunately Robert Fleurke could not be there to take custody of the trophy, so we had a fight for it!  After 15 seconds of blood and carnage, it was agreed that Malcolm will be custodian of it ( he might be in touch with Robert about the options). pics to follow.

The weather at Goodwood was warm and sunny throughout. We saw just about every race on track and wandered around the (outside of the) paddocks and even around the amazing array of cars in the car park. It was really good to spend an hour or so chatting to Malcolm Shaw.
We didn't suffer from much queueing to get in or out or even at the burger vans. The caravan did its job. If the weather had been bad it would have been a lifesaver. We even managed some very basic cooking there. It was great to sit back with a full stomach and have long evenings of beery chat. It does seem that 3 per caravan is the optimium number.
The key seems to be to commit very early and book up and also to have a little preparation to be able to contend with whatever happens. Thanks to Clive for organising this. It was a very successful and enjoyable long weekend.

It was clear from watching the Glover Trophy race that The BT7 is the best car in the 65's. It drove away from the Ferrari 1512's and the BRM P261 and even lapped the BT11.

Thanks for the link.  BTW, I crossed my fingers and tuned in to the ITV4 review tonight.  Shameful hype with little action in the first half, but it improved towards the end.

One slight problem - I've not noticed Motor Racing on TV turn fictional until now.  The racing action was speeded up by 20 or 30%!  This is common practice on U-tube, and probably only disgusts those of us who are into realism.  The hype has now spread to the TV screen.  Strange, because I thought the real thing was exciting enough already? :(

Title: Re: JOE SHAW MEMORIAL TROPHY

I'm afraid that the link was heavily edited highlights of the racing anyway, but at least gave a flavour of ( part) of what goes on.

I AM GOING TO BANG A GONG HERE ABOUT GOODWOOD 2015!!

As some of you will know three of us shared a static caravan for the weekend about 10 minutes from the track this year. This worked out significantly cheaper than staying chez Goodwood.

I was fortunate enough to grab the last available caravan when I booked in March this year.

SO!!
If there are people interested in going next year and wish to stay in a caravan, complete with all cooking facilities, shower etc ( great if the weather turns bad) we apparently need to book BEFORE Christmas.

3 to a caravan seems to be the optimum for comfort and this year that worked out at about £70 per person to cover Fri,Sat,Sun nights.

A little early at the moment, but perhaps something to bear in mind??

Watching that lot brings to mind the old adage " all the gear , no idea ! "

Lotus 33 owner Andy Middlehurst from my home town of St Helens ,  knew him and his dad who started off as a scrap car dealer , used to get bits off him for suping up the old A35's & Anglias

If you ( or anyone else) is interested in doing the Goodwood Revival for 2015 can I suggest that they post an interest here. It is great to actually meet GPL names in the flesh and share a drink or two ( honest guv, we only had a minimal amount of alcohol..... as far as I can remember ::) ) Oh, and by the way Bernie there was a food outlet specifically for pies!!!

As for myself, I intend to be there again and enjoy the spectacle 99.9% certain of that.

I think the way to do this if we are talking about hiring the static van option would be for each group of 3 to make their own booking.

I can post the details of the site here with contact phone numbers etc.

As we have some space in the calendar this year's Joe Shaw Trophy will be a slightly longer format that previous events. It will be staged over six rounds on Sundays & Tuesdays. starting on Sunday 9th, concluding on Tuesday 25th. We will race on six classic British tracks using the original67 mod; Snetterton, Brands Hatch, Donnington, Castle Coombe, Aintree & Goodwood (in that order if you want to practice). Goodwood does have a glitch somewhere in the track design but as the prestigious trophy is presented to the winner (if they attend) at the Goodwood Revival on September 11th -13th it seems a fitting place to finish.

The event is open to all comers. All tracks are short to medium length & in the interest of promoting close racing & reducing lapping incidents the following voluntary handicap system will apply.
Privateer standard - no handicap
Works standard - no Lotus or Eagle
Top runners in the Works (you know who you are) - Honda, Cooper or BRM.
Races will run on Pro settings for around 30 minutes. Usual qualifying arrangements.

Hi Billy

This all sound really great. Thank you again for keeping the memory of Joe so very alive :)

I am competing on 9th (August) at Loton Park and its likely we will be back late Sunday evening however if I can get things setup I would really like to try and join in at some point.

I've got GPL setup with GEM+ 2 and iGOR, just need to work out how it all works!

The Trophy is waiting for whoever is victorious :)

The Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy is back to its more regular Easter spot for 2016. Each year UKGPL stage a mini-series in the memory of Joe  / Beefpie who raced with (mostly in front of) us for a short while.

This years format will consist of a 65 warm up race on Tuesday with a 67 championship race on the following Sunday, at the same track.

Tuesday races will be a little more relaxed, unlimited Shift R provided each reset is followed by a Stop & Go. Free choice of chassis.

Sunday races will be on Pro settings & score points, using the traditional 60s points allocation.

All-comers are welcome. To make the championship (67 races) more competitive a handicap will apply for the regular Works drivers. No Lotus or Eagle. The faster Works drivers (we know who you are) are asked to voluntarily take one of the slower cars - Honda, Cooper or BRM.

Track selection is Nurburgring, Anderstorp, Borovaya, Dragons Nest (fantasy) & Salzburgring.

Proceedings will get underway on Tuesday 29th - 65s at the Ring.

A great weekend at Brands Hatch with members of UKGPL for the presentation of this years Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy. Some great memories for all and serious sunburn for some individuals.

Robert Fleurk and Tommie made the long journey from Holland ( one from the North and one from the South of the country), Phil Thornton ( and son Luke) from Lancashire, Andy Livingston from deepest Devon, Billy from Eastbourne, Colin ( arf arf arf ) arrived from Epsom and myself from Bristol. Malcolm and Beverley arrived with the JSMT on Sunday and Robert was presented with the magnificent trophy overlooking Surtees Bend. There was no champagne, but we did miraculously uncover some Dutch Lager to celebrate the moment!!  How lucky was that??!!  ::).

I think that we all enjoyed meeting up with fellow GPL simracers and watching some of the real life cars that we use in GPL. Free access to all of the cars in the paddock gave Tommie the chance to get some great detail photos of dashboards and even rivets on the car panels. ( watch out for some revised car packs in the future  ;)  ).

The general feeling was that Brands was actually much better value than Goodwood, where we have been previously, at around 30% of the cost!)  Early discussions about a possible 2017 JSMT convention included other venues ...Oulton Park, Zandvoort, Spa, Castle Coombe, Zolder, Silverstone etc were all mentioned, but it was too early to make any concrete plans. I think 2017 might be decided by the numbers of members who decide to attend, and where they live ??

Evening discussions over a few beers ranged from  H-shifter v paddles, right foot braking v left foot braking, diff setups vs shock values, steering ratios vs office chairs, Dutch beer vs English beer...................and football vs Brexit.

Thanks to everyone who made the weekend such great fun, and special thanks again to Malcolm and Beverly for the Joe Shaw Trophy and for being there.
Im sure that pics of the weekend will be posted soon.

Well said Clive! :)

Thoroughly enjoyed the weekend, apart from my personal hell night, induced by the combo of a very hot and spicey chili, together with the amount and different choice of British beers!  :o That was violent, but glad I recovered ;)

I can't say enough about the hospitality shown, and the camaraderie. Tom and I got along very well, which made the travelling so much easier. :) The camping, the circuit and the racing were simply terrific, as well the sightseeing and the country, the Garden of England! What a great country and great people! Can't say enough how pleased I am to have met all of you guys (Tom, Clive, Andy, Billy, Phil and sons, and Colin (Arf x3)). We all got along very well.

The Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy presentation was also very special, and emotional for me as well. It was an honour to meet Malcolm and Beverly and have a few chats with them. :) I took the trophy with me, but will return it next year, we'll see where ;) For sure we will keep the remembrance of Joe alive!

More later, cheers guys for an unforgettable weekend! :)
