Title: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) Intermediates Trophy (65) - Zeltweg - Nov 13
Post by: BadBlood on November 12, 2012, 03:08:51 PM +0000
The Intermediates Trophy goes European - we are in central Austria. Couple of nice long straights with tricky bends at the end make this a good test. Originally built in 1969 to replace the bland and bumpy Zeltweg Airfield circuit (don't get the wrong track!), the Österreichring track was known for being very fast, as every corner was a fast sweeper and were taken in no lower than 3rd gear in a 5-speed gearbox and 4th in a 6-speed gearbox, as well as noticeable changes in elevation during the course of a lap.

In line with the new handicapping system, only the series leader is currently chassis restricted. Nobody else has enough points. BT7 might actually give everyone else a chance here but I have said that before...

Please check the Season 23 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=359&theme=6) regarding rules and the Intermediates Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=363&theme=6) pages in particular.

Qualifying may start before 9pm, if so, Reserve drivers should leave the server when 35 minutes of qualifying remains and only rejoin when 30 minutes of qualifying is left. This is to ensure that Full Time drivers get priority in joining.

Please restrict chat to pit messages if necessary, and this includes the end of the race, until all running drivers have completed the necessary laps.

The Intermediate Trophy races are run under Int Long rules and all incidents in the Lap 1 red zone will be moderated and reported incidents for the rest of the race, however the moderators reserve the right to review any incident. Drivers are reminded that they are limited to ONE Shift-R. The Red Zone will extend to the exit of Malmedy if your Moderator mixes up his posts - look below smart alecs!

Please ensure you are aware of the new in-series penalties for this season. Details are here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring a penalty will receive a PM informing them of this."

Please submit incident reports within a week after the race so that the moderators report may be out before the next race.

Well it was looking good for a few laps ;D. Sorry for the spin & hope it didn't affect anyone too badly. No Clermont style giving in to the pressure & letting faster cars through this time!. When the dust settled I was 10th & I caught the race between Bernie & Jonny. It took lots of laps to find a way past Bernie & then another lot to catch & pass Jonny. I passed 3 cars racing & one that had spun so someone must have dropped out & I ended up a lonely 5th.
Really enjoyed this race as everyone was totally fair from start to finish. Well done the first 4 to finish - well ahead of me in the end.

Had trouble getting 1st and 2nd right, had a tall 2nd as i was using it in the lap and had to keep making 1st shorter and shorter to get off the line, the gap turned out to be too big and Norm managed to out drag me in to t1, unfortunatly he went a bit wide at Rindt and I slipped up the inside and that was that. I like Zelt as its fast and wide, all about the lines and forgiving, plenty of room to recover a mistake, unlike our next venue. cant say i'm looking forward to Monaco, dont like the place much and never got the hang of it. :( At least Rays BT7 will not be a handicap there.
Good race, Thanks guys :)

Grats again to the podium of Gareth, Clutch and Dave.

Whether it was Dave and Norm or Dave and Clutch in second and third, I was struggling to hang onto the back of them. As ever the BT7 was great fun to drive on the limit but it just did not have the legs even in a tow (at least in my hands).

It should be less of a handicap at Monaco, but I expect the competition to be just as fierce!

See you all at the next round.

The fight with Clutch for the 2nd place was one of the funniest GPL times I ever had.
It's really great when you can drive both on the same line in several turns and when you are almost 100% sure he will do no mistake.

Agreed. I really enjoyed it (much like Silverstone). Nothing better than racing with someone where you're sure, after a lap or so, that you both are confident it what the other person would do. In the end i wasn't bothered who got 2nd and who got 3rd as the racing was so good. I noticed that on a lot of corners we used different lines which also made it interesting. Neither line appeared faster, but it allowed us on more than one occasion to be side by side fo large parts of the lap. Great fun and well done. As i said in my Silverstone report, races like that remind you of what a great game GPL is.  ;)

Thanks Bernie for asking for no penalty. Between the 2 incidents as I said in my response to the incident report no arguement about me getting a penalty.
