Done.
Panty Modena is a bit off the pace, but is an easy drive,  and may be competitive.

Umm Hadn't thought of that. I think I will be ferrying younglings around Thursday afternoon.
If someone else wants to be starter it could run anytime that people want.

I'm a definite no for the evening and not sure about the afternoon.

And just tried the Vette.   Awful!...................But quick!

Is dodgy for me too, I am not sure when I will be taking my offspring home.
It would suit me to cancel this event.

Does anyone have any objections if I postpone it to 2 weeks later?

I should be able to make it, but it's a shame if others can't so no objections here to postponing it.

Also, there is the matter of a GTL enduro the following evening which will provide my racing fix for the week....

Yep. My thoughts too. Tony'g big event is on the Friday with the awesome (if unwieldy) 50s cars
It would suit me to move this event as I will be flying around ready to go to Ireland.

Nice event but I'll be seriously pushing the boundaries of "Goodwill to all men" with Mrs Wiltshire ( :taz:) if I'm racing this'n and Friday. So I'll decline but would love it if it were moved to another week.

2:04.3 any good?

I had 3 or 4 laps in the GT40 and in a couple of the vettes (they're all different  ;)) and was in the 2:02s.

Managed to get the same times in the 906 after half a dozen laps and a lot of tweaking. Still a bit more to come I think, but alien types will be well under 2:00 I reckon.

Haven't tried the Pantera yet.

Hmmm.......

Work to do there then!

Matt has come up with a group of cars that I just can't drive.  I can only get into the 2:02s by crashing over the curbs at the chicanes.

Not seen a server in days.

Trundling around Monza in these recalcitrant beasts all on my tod isn't half as much fun as leaping into the Capri and having a bash on GC!   ::)

Just a thought Clive, but you are running the 1988 version of Monza in the link aren't you?

Might be good to call it Monza 88 in the announcement Matt as it caught me out when I first read it.

Edit: Actually, I can't see any of our servers in the lobbies at present.

Struggling to get this event to move from Fun races to Sports Car events. Next event is Goodwood, this is the week after.
By all means try it offline. Is Monza 88, as I said in the first post, but deleted it when I thought It had appeared in P8SC
because I hate the modern 1st chicane, is daft with  these cars for me.

I agree about the modern chicane Matt.

If I ever manage to spot a brake marker for the 88 version I might get somewhere!

Title: Re: UKPnG Season 8 Fun Races - Monza - Jan 10th 2013
Post by: phspok on December 23, 2012, 10:41:41 PM +0000
Yep, Took me 15 laps with the MK2 before I could complete one.
It is is an awkward braking zone for the 1st chicane.

The Panty is an easy drive here, and is only a little off the pace on raw speed
makes up for it in consistency, and it corners and stops better
Not tried the Grand SPorts yet, there are two years, the later Penske is fastest. (maybe too fast? let's see what people get)

This is a Tudor inspired event.  :thumbup1:

Just before the 200 Metre board works for me for most of these, MK2 excluded as they forgot to connect the brake pipes.

NOTE: As there is no PG3 race next week, I have taken the liberty of running this on the server for practice as well as the Goodwood event.

I spent a couple of hours trying to tweak the 906-8 into submission. Eventually put in some low 2.02's in it  :)
I'm obviously not a porsche works driver  ;) it's a feisty little beast.

Only managed a low 2:03 in the GT40 so far but only done a handful of laps in it. Amazing that even on a fast track like monza it feels like its not getting a chance to really stretch its legs.

To spruce up my offline practise, I ran it as a 'race weekend' ....my god this is an amazing looking mod.  watching all these amazing cars from that era in action is jaw dropping. 8)

2:03s in the Pantera so far. Think I can knock another sec off that at least with more laps. Other than overheating brakes, it feels the most driveable of the set as well quick.

Could only manage 2:04s and 05's with the vette grand sports though, but no prior knowledge of setup or driving style with these.

I can't get the GT 40 right, but I have a notion, it will the winner of this race. Managed 2.02.100 in the Pantera in just 5 laps, so that will be my choice for sure

Errrr. "NOvice level" ooops, <cough> that could have been me (Matt ducks the hurled rocks)
I was experimenting with damage levels to see how I could optionally reduce the daft damage sensitivity
and forgot to set it back to "SImulation"

Deepest appologies.  :hang:

p.s All server admins restart all the practice servers after their event finish, we always stop
the other series servers before starting our own events, then restart after.
People forget, but it is rare.

Why do you think the damage level is daft? Seems alright to me. If you front end into a barrier in a vintage race car its invariably race over!  In praccy I've had numerous visits to the armco whilst pushing the limits resulting in glancing blows at all angles and none resulted in a dead engine, whilst some gave varying suspension damage, as is correct.
If you go nose in, expect to dnf ! And rightly so...this isn't gtl you know ;)

Title: Re: UKPnG Season 8 Fun Races - Monza '88 - Jan 10th 2013
Post by: phspok on January 09, 2013, 12:36:05 PM +0000
My experience is not quite the same. I have had glancing blows that would have at worst bent a real wing
give me 0% . Also fairly light head on into barriers that killed the engine or
bent the suspension as if I had gone in at high speed.

I agree that the damage needs to be "realistic", but sitting in a chair watching a 2D screen with
no gforce on me bum or the car moving under me is less realistic, and makes it harder to
judge speed and grip, so I think the damage model should be a bit on the kind side, whereas
here it seems to be on the over harsh side. This is not arcade racing this is a simulation
it just feels to be more unkind than it should be to me, and several people have made similar
comments. If I could slightly reduce the damage level then I would.

I agree.

These so called sims that provide cars with the resiliance of a battle tank do not encourage the right approach and are a bit too arcade-like in my book!

I think PnG v3 is spot on.

Post by: phspok on January 09, 2013, 12:49:50 PM +0000
I would just like to make a point here guys if I may.
Last race there were a few instances of people unintentionally tapping the guy in front
causing him to go off, though there was no suggestion of bad driving at any time that I saw.

However, it is the etiquette here that if you push someone off you wait for them
even if it might be "their fault" and however frustrating it might be - even I have found myself behind
slower cars on several occasions and have tapped them when they braked early/got wobbly/got lost  :o
and have had to sit in frustration watching the field go past as I waited for them to get going again.

What comes around goes around guys, someone might have to wait for you at a future race.

Lets keep it simple.
Thanks
Matt.

Re the race contact.....hmm, at the risk of getting abuse, i disagree that you should pull over and wait for the other guy to rejoin the track for minor contact unless it was a blatantly stupid move that caused it, ie divebomb into a corner or side swiping someone who is already mid apex ahead of you. If someone ahead catches you out by suddenly sticking the anchors on 10m before the expected braking zone or hitting the brakes mid apex because they are running wide, spinning etc, thats their error not yours (excluding vastly different car characteristics where you should be watching/expecting the other guy to brake earlier than you need to). It seems daft to ruin your own race for minor indiscretions and it should be that you continue on and expect a slapped wrist/punishment by the stewards afterwards if deemed necessary (and by all means apologise profusely to the victim). Its racing after all, not 'after you sir' !
Etiquette should be used sensibly, if you know you did something stupid, then wait, but if a totally innocent brush or one of you came out worst when you both duked it out through a corner whilst fighting then i would say carry on. (as long as you didnt bully someone off!).
Thats my personal take on it and i would consider myself a very fair driver/person.    We dont need people stopping all over the place as it also robs others of a good fight.

Copy/paste all that into the rules  ;) ;D

You don't have to pull over or stop. The rules state that you may take a voluntary drive thru within three laps after the incident.

Minor contact lol. I think the definition of that depends if you are the victim or perpetrator.

Post by: phspok on January 09, 2013, 01:39:14 PM +0000
I completely agree in principle Mark, in practice though, I, or anyone else does not want to be drawn into
long winded moderation involving several admins about who was at fault or how much driver 1
is guilty and how much driver 2 contributed. It is in these series relatively rare that incidents get
reported partly because our regular drivers know the rule, and drive to avoid it.

I have other things to do with my evenings than wade through replays and have to form
common opinion with others with PMs etc.

Incidents happen very rarely here, but If members feel something was not as it should be
then they should make an incident report. I would personally like to minimise them is all.

We have agreed that series admins will not be the person dealing with any incidents
for their own events to take out any personal involvement, this does mean that we have to
involve others who also have better things to do.

The rule is simple (intentionally) If you shove someone off you wait. (Ok, or take a drive through)
(Obviously if someone goes off and shoots back across the track into your path and you hit them
that is not the same thing as tapping him up the rear while racing.)

As I said what goes around comes around.
It may be unfair this time, but your turn will come.

This is not arcade racing this is a simulation it just feels to be more unkind than it should be to me, and several people have made similar
comments. If I could slightly reduce the damage level then I would.

I agree Matt! If you tap someone from behind IRL ( or the other way around) it doesn't nescesarily mean, that the suspension or the steering of the car is ruined.
Have a look at some of the DTM races .......... they have contact incidents in almost every race.

I've spent a few hours on this tonight, but I can't get to grips with any of the cars. Which is funny, because at last weeks race I could have taken any of them with no worries ???

The Porka feels like I'm driving on a knife edge & I'm only going at about 80% I'm sure, so not really an option if I want to complete the race
The GT40 was just a mystery to me :-\.
I couldn't find a Vette labeled "Grand Sport" ???
The only one left was the Pantera that I can drive OK till the brakes start going mental after a couple of laps (yes I've opened the vents & reduced braking from 100% to 80%).

So I can't help but feel this is going to result in a lot of frustration & an early bath :(

I haven't done race distances in any of the cars. The GT40 MK2 in PG3 is IMHO
worse than the PG2 one. It might be better if they had connected the brake pipes.
It requires a lot of patience to keep it under control, is very easy to go too fast
in it and go off at every turn.

I haven't actually done any laps in the 906 here yet, I tried it somewhere and it seemed
quite drivable to me. (I think Tudor did most of the testing for this one)

I have not been aware of any brake issue with the Panty, perhaps I haven't driven it hard enough
but it seemed a slightly slower but easier drive to me than the others

There are a few Vette Grandsports, some have a bigger engine, and IMHO are potentially
race winners if someone can tame one.

If the vette grandsports are not showing in the cars list on line it's because we don't
have enough groups in the list, I will check.

From NG forums:

1960's FIA Group 6:

Chevrolet Corvette GrandSport (427ci Roadster)
Ford GT40 MkII
Porsche 906
Porsche 906E
Porsche 906 LangHeck
Porsche 906/8

I have added more cars to the practice server, but the Gr6 O2L were already there  ???

I have found the GT40 and Vette to be monsters and as Matt has said, the GT40 has no brakes.  I think that braking for the Mulsanne hairpin would commense somewhere near Calais!

That said I have wrestled both of them down to a 2:01 dead but a whole race could be a challenge, especially if someone else wanted a bit of the track that I was already committed to!

So I can't help but feel this is going to result in a lot of frustration & an early bath :(

Sounds like your normal race night  ;D

the 906-8 took a lot of setup tweaking and a lot of laps to get it right (for me). Stiffer setup seems to work better for the P&G3 cars (as it should be) and generally the tyres often have too much air in them so your not getting full tyre contact.

As Matt said, i also had no trouble with the Pantera and braking, and thought it the easiest of the group to race quickly and consistent with.

The GT40 seems too big and powerful even for Monza!  :o  I would need a lot of practise laps to feel comfortable over a race distance in it, but i hope we see a good driver using it well. They were epic in that xmas Le Mans enduro we did once. Impressed Clive got it down to 2:01 as thats all ive managed in the 906-8.
Didnt like the Vette as much as rest of group so spent no time with it.

I think I miss this one - simply still less competitive than usual(best 2.08 so far in the Porka)  ::).

P&G V3 is always great fun but it looks to me that it's "too" realistic for bloody amateurs
like me concerning certain cars respectively tracks.

Aside from that I have to do a little bit of preparation for another job interview tomorrow,
so there are a lot of other things in my brain.

Have fun guys.

There's a run out area exiting Ascari where a couple of tenths might be gained.

For the F1 88 race we ran here I banned its use as exceeding track limits and against our usual 2 wheels off track rule. Then in the RL race that weekend learnt that drivers were allowed to use it  ::) (seem to remember Webber coming a cropper into the inside armco when he got it wrong).

Might be good just to clarify for this event  :-\

Sorry to John for the rough treatment at the start.

Half way to the first chicane all the other cars vanished and I was just in the middle of swearing a when they all came back.

I was a tad late on the brakes as a result and elbowed John out of the way.  I let him straight back past and carried on but the next lap Geoffers vanished from my mirror and this time it was for good!

Bother it! :taz:

Hard luck Stig.  Wondered where you were.

Shocked but very pleased with 3rd tonight, but think that's more down to how difficult to drive all the car choices where tonight than any decent driving on my part. I just focused on staying on track & got my reward.
Very much a rewarding challenge tonight, but nothing like the fun of last weeks race long wheel to wheel racing action in the "less about the power, more about the handling" cars. Tonight was not about racing as much as surviving!

Big congrats to anyone who finished, see you next week, Lotus 7's should be fun!

Oh mate, I've just been looking back through the race thread (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=6690.msg116117#msg116117), it's awsome!
I spent hours trying to get to grips with weather files, so am pleased you remember the rain coming in late on :-*.
Tony's graphics for the weather forcast (& everything else) were excelent & just added to the whole build up. I remember it really felt like a special event & not just another weekly race.

Difficult race but had some great moments, together with some not so great  :-\

Braking into those chicanes was a bit of a lottery at times especially mid race when my 906 started to behave very oddly giving lots of oversteer. Was a real struggle to keep on track which was frustrating.

Had a nice race with Rob and Simon and could have added Legzy to the fun if I'd not thrown it in the gravel at Ascari.

Well done to John for yet another impressive win in the tank  8)

That was tougher than I expected, well done to all who finished.
I was having some fun, when it said Mr Anker (if he cares to give his real name whateverpower he might be
I will add him to the results properly) was showing as 0.5 sec behind but I could see nothing, though I could hear a car
got a slight tap off him in Lesmo 1 but still nothing in sight, Lesmo 2 I could hear him even louder but still no visual
so tried to give room to an invisible car only to spin under power an write the car off into the inside fence
I checked the view from other cars after and he was visible to them, just dropped out for me.
Ah well, he drove perfectly well, shame the con was a bit weird tonight.
Next Sports car event is quite different, hopefully will have less casualties.

p.s Christmas special is always on for me, just have to set the date sensibly.

Hehe, I would rather have had your 3rd place though Legzy. ::)

Was happily circulating in 2nd place, well behind John, just made a silly mistake & caught too much kerb on the exit of Ascari & spun nose first into the barrier. The realistic damage model imediately killed my (rear) engine!!!!!!!!

Anyway congrats to the podium, cya all in those Lotus 7s at Monaco.

I am said Mr Anker but I saw things differently from you. I saw you (blue Pantera) in front of me getting out of shape through the chicane before the Lesmos, we then went side by side through Lesmo 1 and I then drew back, going through Lesmo 2 2 car lengths or so behind you when you floored it too hard and spun off to the right.

Anyway, that's what I saw. But if you did not see, only hear me there may have been a technical problem on either your or my side and there may have been contact. If this was so, I do apologise; it was not my intention to end your race and I would have tried to avoid contact had I seen the possibility of contact.

I joined the grid well in advance of the start and I always saw and heard all cars around me. I ran close to a few other people in the early part of the race without experiencing contact with them. If it is possible to find out whether others felt troubled by my driving, please let me know.

Your driving was perfectly fine, no worries. You could not know that I could not see you.
It has happened before once a long time ago, must be a "feature"

The contact in Lesmo1 was so small that it was not an issue for me.
I floored it out of Lesmo 2 because I was trying not to get in the way of a car I could not see.
My retirement was my fault entirely.

Welcome to the series, hopefully you will join some more events. Because of the "unusual" name
I watched afterwards from MJ's car and you were perfectly visible, and drove without fault
until you also ended your race with 0% in a wall.

i had a sadly disapointing race after expecting more, due to tyre selection. I went for yellow spot softs thinking the super soft whites wouldnt last for 40minutes. However the yellows had crud grip in comparison and meant everytime i braked for the first chicane it was a lottery as to whether it would stop in time and/or put me out of shape.  The yellows really affected the balance of the car and i had several 'out of shape' moments and generally lost time every lap  :(  I normally only practise in race setup and then tweak for qually, but for some reason i did the opposite here and paid the price for last minute race changes  ::) The Yellows were more like mediums in grip levels and the front right never warmed up at all.
Didnt really get to race anybody as a result, shame as i was expecting some good fights here.

Great track though, some Alfas or slightly easier to manage cars would be fun here.

Good to see some GC/NG drivers turn up...i did put a quick advert up there on race day for the race  :) Surprised our Italian contingent missed Monza?  Still think we would attract more numbers if we did regular posts over on NG P&G forum and use snazzy old photo headers ala our champ series banners.  8)

I'm not usually a fan of Monza, but that was quite fun in the GT40. Thought I'd go with the Ford as no-one else had taken it, and was quite surprised at how it handled on the default setup. It certainly felt different from what I remember in v2.1, but in a good way - just a couple of suspension changes to try and reduce the understeer and it was surprisingly drivable. It might have something to do with the tyres as I'd taken the only one with Firestones (all the others were Goodyears) and I'm sure with a bit more work it would be into the 1:57's. I'd got a high '57 with the 906 offline so they'd make a good pairing for future races (hint, hint ;)).

Sorry to John for the rough treatment at the start.

No worries, Clive. I'd seen you coming so delayed turning in for a bit ;D Shame about the disco, we might have been on for a good race, looking at the drop off in laptimes on the Ford.

Thanks for the kind words and the welcome. I'd be glad to race with you again. Maybe I should race under a different name, or my real one. I picked W. Anker when I was a total newbie expecting that I would probably drive like one in the beginning ...

Welcome, always good to see a new face :thumbup1:

I think a different name would be a good idea, I must admit I was sceptical when I saw that name appear late in quali without setting a time before the race.. makes people expect the worst :D

Having missed this one  ::) I hope that this isn't the last that we shall see of cars with a bit of "attitude"!

There is practically no PnG community ( and no server most of the time ) so practice gets to be a lonely off-line thing.  At least with these cars there was a bit of a challenge to keeping them healthy long enough to do a good lap!  ;D

I found plodding around Goodwood in the TR4 absolutely dire.

If someone "brushed" the Armco in this race they must have gone some distance off the tarmac; unless they went off on the inside of some corners and when I had such incidents it only did the usual 95 seconds of suspension damage, whatever that is.

If you want a point to your lonely wanderings Clive, it would be a great boon if you
wanted to do some testing for upcoming events.  ;)

Try running some cars you like that fit into one or more of the series themes at a track or tracks
who have times within a second or so of each other that you think would make a good race.

The last two events were mostly readers wives drives. If anyone wants to influence
what we do here gimme some tested event suggestions. ANy suggestions other than
stick my head down a drain are welcome, proper "I have tested these cars here, and I think
they would be a good race" saves me loads of time. I always check such things, and may edit
but it's way quicker than me having to do everything, including server admin etc etc.  :thumbup1:

Will see what I can do Matt.

Trouble is that a person of my limited ability and vast age needs all the track time that he can get to come to terms with the next race.  So extra R&D is a tall order.

In Profile click Driver Details under League Info. Then enter a Driving name under GTR2. Then click update details. I would hold fire on the team name for the moment as if you prove to be a new talent you may well be made an offer by an existing team.

cheers! But I will not pay for a drive ;)

Edited to add: I will now race under the name Niels P, which accidentally is my real first name plus the first letter of my surname.

W. Anker is no more!

For Matt: At the next event, Niels will come up as 'unknown driver' when creating the result, just then link him to his 'NPP' forum name as normal.
Series are done on forum name, which scores points from any driver names assigned to the forum name (IIRC). Clear? lol

P.s. I've linked driver 'Mr Anker' to forum name 'NPP', then regenerated standings which has sorted the results & standing for last night.

Unofficial LapChart (http://www.justanotherpage.nl/Srou/PnG/GTR2_88monza_2013_1_10_20_49/)

Lovely car choice  :thumbup2: Really enjoyed lumbering the GrandSport around. Didn't know the car and it's history. Quite an interesting read  (http://www.racingicons.com/gs/index.html). Only five ever built (and all modelled in PnG3 I believe)
I do hope that quirky cars keep making the list 8) (even though only crazy dutchies select them  ;) )

I think I miss this one - simply still less competitive than usual(best 2.08 so far in the Porka)  ::).
Please join in the future. My pace was the same, even worse. Could have been a nice Chevy vs Porsche battle although I understand that a job interview is more important. Hope I went well.

Had same problem with Pantera, also if I just kissed Armco, with car side even, it killed the engine so I decided to give this event a miss.

Bill, try to brake a fraction earlier so the car doesn't get out of shape when turning in. I braked at the 200 meter sign...

I joined the grid well in advance of the start and I always saw and heard all cars around me. I ran close to a few other people in the early part of the race without experiencing contact with them. If it is possible to find out whether others felt troubled by my driving, please let me know.
Welcome at Srou. Your driving style was far above average. During the first two laps you could have easily stuck your nose in when I threw out the Anchor for the chicanes but you waited patiently for a proper go.
ps. your car was visible for me all the time.

Just checked the Grand Sports in PnG3 and the #1 and #2 are listed under the Group 6 class. The number #3, #4 and #5 are Group 4 (over 2 liter of course).

So Dan should hold the record for Group 4 since I drove a Group 6 class car...

Thought I let you know..

Thanks Alex, I thought I'd got the right one in the right group, I will have a check
EDIT: I have changed Alex' car to be Gr6, but I uncomfortable to regenerate the standings again
in case it renames JPP again.  ???

.................................................. Shame about the disco, we might have been on for a good race, looking at the drop off in laptimes on the Ford.

Just looked at Alex's graphs and your lap times are going to have to drop off more than that before it does me any good.   ;D

Nah once a driver name is mapped to a forum name that's it (unless you choose to manually edit/correct it), so I've regenerated the standings & so congrats to Dan, showing as Group 4 double lap record holder :thumbup1:
