I'll be absent for this'n. Hate the track and I have my first proper GPL race on Tuesday night so to keep relationships civil at home I try to keep to just two race nights per week. Have a good'un.

Got my first laps in last night...whoa! these cars really feel great on this flowing undulating track  8)  The volume and brute power compared to the 'old gent' feel of the Lotus 7's was staggering in contrast. But they felt proper race cars, superb!!

Not sure how easy to apply ballast but you may want to do so to the Capri 3.1 as it appears to blow the rest into the reeds. Or maybe restrict slower drivers to using it.  :-\
My 20mins session had the following laptimes by the AI

Capri 3.1 1st &2nd @ 1:51mins  :o
BMW 24v CSL (Non Schnitzer) 3rd @ 1:54
BMW 12v 4th @ 1:55 & 56
Porshe 3.0 RSR 5th to 7th @ 1:57's
Corvette C3 Hardtop 8th @ 1:59  (Note this car could be added to the group for fast guys like JohnW to drive...it looks and sounds great).
Capri 2.6 @ 2:00mins

I managed a 1:57.2 in the RSR but have only done about 10laps and still tweaking the setup. So be interesting to see what real world times you guys can do in comparison to the AI's times.
Mega track layout this one  8)

OK MJ, you're slow enough to have the Capri 3.1 ;D

My instinct is to enable all BMWs even the Schnizers, reason I haven't so far is because some people
(Myself, and Matteo) seem faster in the Schnizer than the 3100 Capri which I personally find "awkward"
If everyone finds the Capri much faster then I will remove the Schnizer restriction for this and future events.
I didn't want to get into handicapping yet, though perhaps we could do the "TOp 3 in the champ have to use the
RSR3.0? would that spoil people's fun? whadayathink?  ???

yeah know what your saying Matt, i dont want to see any cars excluded in these early days either. More choices on grid the better in my opinion as it all looks and sounds great. As long as we dont end up with 16 capris and 3 each of the other  ::)
There may be a foible to the Capri? does it eat its tyres up in 10 laps / tricky to handle etc.  :-\ Might balance the books over a race distance.

Id like to see one or two more cars added to the set, it might encourage any that find the real fast beasts too much to handle. Maybe the Capri 2.6 (assuming it handles any easier than the 3.1?) and the Vette hardtop i mentioned. Though im sure the Beemers are easyish to drive and the RSR felt planted to me too.

Can see John in that all American paint-scheme Vette  8)

ps i posted an ad over at No-grip using the banner and with a weeks notice it may entice some more drivers over.

Ouch!

I'm quite happy to self-handicap (that sounds vaguely smutty for some reason), and it would be nice to have another choice if the RSR is blatantly uncompetitive at some tracks. I'm not too fussed either way, but I think there might be some Porsche-haters out there that might not like the idea of being forced into it :D

I wouldn't worry too much about the times the AI are doing, they seem much more competitive in some cars than others, the Capri 3100 being one that they seem to excel in. I think the RSR will be very competitive here, it is far better in the turns than the other two.

You wont regret it Spanner, its fantabulous   8)  If your not impressed driving the 911's, yet alone the rest of the cars, you must be clinically flat-lined.  ;D  Just crank up the sound and enjoy!  (ps some of the default setups make the cars tame/neutral so stiffen up the bad boys).

However, the feel of the Capri is returning to me, together with a big grin.

Just enjoyed an hour online with GOldtop, managed to sneak into the 1:56 but took many laps, it's a tough track to get a perfect lap on, the numerous crests and hairpins ready to steal your precious tents away. Great fun though, you really feel like you have to grab the car by the scruff of the neck and crack on and the bellowing flat six sounds awesome.  8)

Just done some on line testing with CLive, and I am 2 tenths faster in the Capri 3100 than the BMW Schnitzer, so I am including
all Capris 3100 and 2600, and All BMW 3.5.

I was only a few tenths slower in the 74 Beemer than the Schnizers.
People can now take the Schnizer, which for me is easier to drive on the limit, and a slower Capri if they want to.

IMO it would be a wrong move to allow the clearly fastest car in the set to compete. The GC public servers were  dominated by people choosing this car. Surely the rest of the BMWs being allowed satisfies representing that marque in the race? Otherwise I want a Kremer 935 porsche allowed  ;)

Ps I note Matt neglects to mention the lap times him and Clive were getting in those beemers  :detective:

I had half an hour in the Schnitzer last night and my lap times were very similar to my RSR time with race fuel, but the beemer was much quicker on the straights. I did notice the left front overheated on the beemer so that might come into play in race when it's trying to keep an RSR behind it in the corners. Haven't tested the Capris.

Instincts tell me the IMSA would be way too fast in this company.

Edit: IMSA was 1.5 secs quicker for me after 2 laps with default setup.

IMSA is no faster for me here than the Schnizer so I left it in.
If it's famous for being too quick then I'll take it out.

I think CLive was dipping into 1:52, I was doing race testing with 1:56 for the Capri 3100 and the IMSA and Schnizer, 1:57 for the other Beemers

Please make a final decision now Matt. I need to know what to practice. For me the IMSA is approximately 1 sec faster than the Schnitzer, and it's the only rival to the Capri.

Bit of a shame to hear the beemers and capris are 5 secs faster than the rsr's, not sure how that could be right unless its this specific track making such a difference.  ??? Oh well, I will still enjoy racing it.

Even i noticed the beemers have wildey differing power outputs, i assume the other cars are like it as well so perhaps you might need to restrict the current cars rather than adding in other cars

BY Popular demand I have removed the IMSA. There will be no other changes now.
The capri is fastest, but it's a bit wild and hard (for me anyway) to be consistent in.

The IMSA has less power than the Schinzers, but it is quite a bit lighter.

I will likely be in a Schinzer.

EDIT: Us humans might dip into the 53s on qually grip levels.

Hope to make this after my failure last week  ::)
If we're having the little Capri's, any chance the 2.8 Porkas can be added in later outings aswell. They fit nicely between the CSL's/RSR's and the 2.6 Capris (on shorter tracks at least)

I am currently doing a future Brit series event with the slower Beemer, and Porka 2.8

As stated. most of the cars have a wide variation in power, should make it easier for me
to find good matches, but actually it's a pain in the derrier.

LOL, they're even arguing amongst themselves now  ;D

Capri and Beemer will overheat the front left, RSR not so much.
Even taking meds or hards they still overheat on the Capri

Muhahahahaha, your choice gentlemen  >:D

p.s
I am happy for people to take a 2.8 Porka here if they want, there are some combos where the
less powerful and perhaps lighter variants could be quicker, but I don;t think that is true here
so knock yerself out if you want some of John's patent self abuse handicapping.  :D

Title: Re: UKPnG Season 8 Grand Touring Championship - Portimão - Jan 24
Post by: phspok on January 22, 2013, 12:41:36 PM +0000
There are a few 24v Beemers, some like the Schnizer are a bit faster.
I can just get into the 56s with the Capri though I am as likely to lose it into
a corner when downshifting as get round the corner  :o
I like the Porks here but as I am not much of a coleopterist I am slower in it
compared to others in "Normal" cars, and here it seems to wander about the track
whereas at Melbourne it seemed pretty solid? I will either sweep up the back with
an RSR or maybe still sweep up the back - with the Schnizer I don't get on with
the Capris. I am doing high 58s at best in the RSR 3.0 so far
There is time to be made up by cutting chunks out of some corners
watch out for the cutting police chaps  ::) :detective:

Refer to : https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=11265#event3442
for what transpired last time. If one car proves to be dominant it will likely
cause a rethink of the car choices for future races, it's all a learning curve.

I haven't done any high-grip testing yet but low fuel runs in practice mode have yielded a 53.9 in the Schnizer and a mid-54 in the Capri.

I will probably take the Capri, assuming that I can keep the tyres on it!  Not tried the Porsche yet but hopefully will do on Wednesday evening, my next chance to practice.

Come on Legzy, pull your finger out!  ::)

What a difference a tail makes..

Was planning to take the ducktailed 2.8 RSR out for a spin but in my less talented hands it proved to be quite a challenge to keep the car on track. Tested the Whaletailed 3.0 RSR and this is a much more stable platform.

Looking forward to this - although still missing 10 seconds  ::)

No worries mate, I'm doing the same laptimes.
Could become a nice Beemer vs Porka battle for last position  ;D

Left the race early due to boredom :(.
Got sick of driving laps on my own since lap two, so just after half way I waited for Matt. Sadly by the end of the following lap he was 2 secs ahead & I'd wasted my time yet further & hit Esc.
I found this combination truly uninspiring to practise with & abysmal to race with. Still, at least they looked & sounded pretty ::)

p.s. Sorry to the car I cut in-front of on lap 1(?), but the little game of gentleman's "no, after you" was probably the race highlight for me :'(

That was a simply awesome race  8) Loved it from start to 'almost' finish.

Qually was a great battle and kept improving my time to place in 5th or 6th? Happy with that with strong opposition on the grid.  :)

Race was epic, had a fantastic battle with Goldtop in the opening 10 mins and then a superb fight with TGC for lap after lap, both of us swapping places and trying to close on Geoffers.  :fencing: I was absolutely loving the close quarters racing with a pair of RSR's  8)
Didnt put a wheel wrong until lap 18 of 19  ::) when side by side through Turn1 and the cars rear broke away putting me into a slow long spin. This dropped me from 5th to 6th  :( and then allowed Stig and GT to close up the 7 sec gap and stig scampered past.
I fought him closely for the next lap and sadly whilst glued to his rear bumper through the penultimate corner i tapped his rear and he went onto the grass  :-[ i got off the throttle and let GT shoot past but as it was last lap i then speeded up and carried on as Stig hit esc  :( I was gutted to have that, but nothing i could do mid apex in a downhill corner in an RSR!
Needless to say i went from 5th to 7th in one lap  :(

But it was a corking race! Congrats all round  :thumbup1:

Left the race early due to boredom :(.

Probably too fast for oldies!   ::)

Had a great race with Jukka from start to finish and he just pipped me to the post.  Nearly lost out to Geoffers as well, who had caught us because Jukka waited whilst I climbed out of the gravel after a slight nudge.

Perhaps I did have the right car after all.  Obviously I wasn't ever going to catch John but even on race rubber I think that the Capri had the edge on the RSR.

Looking forward to the next round.

Grats John and Jukka and thanks to Jukka for some good fun.

Well that was interesting. Had a decent quali but my race pace was a bit off probably because I'd gone a bit extreme on my setup. By mid race I was falling back and struggling to find any grip even though tyres seemed ok on xd  ???

Had a nice battle with MJ early on and would have had a good battle with Stig if that Schnitzer hadn't been so damn quick down the straights  :o Seems the RSR is always going to be the underdog in these races unless you're from John's planet  ;)

Hi guys! (first post here, just like Jukka)

@phspok - i'm TGC on the track. (I have this bad habit of having one alias on forums and other on the race track. Gonna change that soon)

Well, what to say? i simply loved it! Tough and CLEAN race today. Thank you all.

I was racing at home this time, being Portuguese, so i felt really comfy going round Portimao and i could just swear i could hear the crowd roaring when I was passing the main straight.

I would like, once more, to thank MJ for the opportunity given, and for the awesome battle with the RSRs.

I WANT MORE!

Nice combo, even hotlapping was enjoyable round here in the RSR - there always seems to be more time to be had in this car. Made a good start and, crucially, stayed ahead of Jukka for the first few laps until Clive kept him busy. I'd spent quite a bit of time fiddling with setups to try and get the Porsche to feel like it used to in v2.1. This version doesn't feel anywhere as planted as the old one, but I think I might be alone on that opinion..

Welcome Jukka & GragonGaru, glad to see you had fun :thumbup2:

Thanks for the compliment, but there's far faster than me around! Wait until the italian contingent turn up...

I have made TGC = DragonGaru in the database, I will redo the results later so (hopefully)
he will get points in the Championship.

Yeah, where are you Matteo? you guys light the place up when you come out to play  8)

No I agree John, this one is more tail happy. I had briefly worked on a setup in testing which seemed quite good, but in practice it felt different & I kept spinning on corner entry. So had to make some adjustments for qually but was still 0.5s slower than I'd managed in testing.

Race went well, got a good start & drew level with Jukka on the run to T1 but the BMW & Clive's Capri just had that bit extra before the corner to get in front. Couldn't stay with them in the early stages & a half-spin on lap 4 nearly dropped me into the clutches of the battle for 5th. Had a lonely few laps until Jukka & Clive had a moment & allowed me to catch up. Last 3-4 laps was really frantic, almost got into 3rd place a couple of times but the extra power of the BMW & Ford kept Jukka & Clive ahead. Happy with 4th though  ;D

Congrats to the podium   , cya all next week.

He is still minus a steering wheel but hopes to join us again soon.

I made a hopeless start last night and whilst I had great fun I feel that it let John have too easy a time of it.

John had provided the SBRC faithful with a 1:53.5 TT lap to chase and doing just that I had clocked up a 1:53.3 before packing the Capri into the transporter and heading to the server.  Sadly I couldn't find another in qually and when I messed up the start that was it!

Jukka and I kept each other busy for the next 19 laps and John had a quiet life.  I expect that he was light on his tyres also although by the amount of smoke that he was laying down in the early laps he shouldn't have had any rubber left at all!

Brands might be more to the liking of the 911 jockeys so I don't expect to get within striking distance there either!

But it was really great to have some decent cars to race! Don't listen to Legzy, he's past it.  ;D

Unofficial LapChart (http://www.justanotherpage.nl/Srou/PnG/GTR2_portimao_2013_1_24_20_47/)

A bit off the pace on this circuit I guess. Still have not figured out how to go through the first fast blind uphill section  :-\
Shame you quit Jules, could have had a nice fight. Eifel and JPV were out of my league.
Oh well..

Thanks Alex,

Obviously John's tyres didn't go off enough to give anyone much hope.   ;D

Finally my first finish this year  ::)

Really like this track in the BMW.

Was able to improve a lot during praccy and quali.

Chose a more defense style of driving for the race (about 2 seconds slower than in quali)
in order to spare the front tyres which worked really well.
No big mistakes and a smooth race til the end.

CU next week
