Title: UKGPL Season 23 (2012) - Imola - Jan 8
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on January 02, 2013, 10:50:25 PM +0000
As there has been strong support to keep the Historics (1966 Mod) on the calendar we will be running a double header of two Intermediate Short races at Imola. For race 1 you can pick any car from the 2 Litre range & then upgrade to a 3 Litre beast for the second race. Other than engine size there is a free choice of chassis. (2L cars range from 2.0 – 2.7 litre).
It’s a fun race, unlimited Shift R but you are asked to observe the normal GPL rule of taking a Stop & Go after every reset.
Please note the slightly earlier start time of 8.45.

Race List = IGOR
Server = UKGPL3 - Note change of server
Race date = Tuesday 08-01-2013
Time = 20:45 UK time
Track =  Imola  (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=485)
Race length = Intermediate Short
Variant = 1966 – 2L & 3L
Damage Model = Intermediate
Qualifying time = max. 15 minutes

Blast - I though if I started in January & nobody else got there till November that I would have a chance of winning!

Yes - it is 08/01/13 not 08/11/13

Perhaps Phillipe is trying to dispose of some old French Francs? :laugh:

Hope you all have a good nights racing.
For some reason GPL wont load Imola so I wont be joining you.

That is a shame. What error Nigel?

I have had to re-install tracks before but the biggest culprit is the Season file...

I had no idea 66s were so unpleasant to drive. I at least had a driveable setup for the 2.0l race, just v v slow, but the 3l race the car was totally uncontrollable. Billy, I think it was you that came round the hairpin to find me beached there - just couldn't get the ******** to move. Sorry about that.

Any thoughts of racing 66s this season now firmly quashed until I can understand them. Does anyone have some decent setups I could try? The opnes I downloaded from ATD just didn't work...

Cheers

Arf

That was kind of fun. Managed to get my installation sorted just before race 2 and joined on the grid. Default setup with gearing lowered 2 clicks, felt fine from mid to end of race but the first few laps were hairy :D Apologies to Dave Curtis I think it was, as it appears I was blocking, but it was just hard to keep on the chosen path :-[
As an aside, can I remind everyone to disable AV programs when installing ANYTHING. Despite never having any problems in the past it seems that AVG and the Imola installer just don't get on.
Looking forward to S24 and the prophecied 'Coming of the Moose'.

Is it just me or do all the 3L cars have yo yo's for suspension :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

Just you mate ;)

Sorry to Colin, Bernie and Bill for Race 1. Just couldn't hold a tight enough line at Tosa and touched Colin (who didn't leave a ton of room ;) ). That put me in Bill's path and we exploded. One more spin and a lost wheel and I retired. I did chase Bill for a few laps but put in my PB and saw his lead increase by 50 yards :(

Race 2 was MUCH better and Arf^3 definitely needed lower gearing.... he was like a milk float off the line.

Managed to hold Clive in view for a few laps and then even caught him up a bit at the end. Had fun holding off Cookie for a whole corner ;) and that was that.

Not a bad outing for the 'Herd'. Check out our web presence here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/bluemoose) and you'll understand that with machinery like that the other teams have no chance...

Arf - John Roberts built the default set ups for the F2. If you like those his '66 ones will probably be fine.
I did try the Cooper 3.0L & it was a difficult beast.
I built my own set ups for the BT11 2.5L & the BT19 3.0L. I am happy to share them - send me a PM with an e-mail address & I will send them.

It's true! that girdle was so loose it kept falling to my ankles!!...would I lie to you!!!  ::)

Penelope's Ferrari ( it must be a Fezza 'cos it's red) is being prepared by the Blue Moose boffins and is not yet quite ready for the new season.
There appears to be a problem with the on board wi-fi connection for the eye pad? whatever that is :whistling:

Tthere were some comments about the 66's last night from Arf and Ronnie. Maybe I can help...probably not, but anyway you are going to get it!

Generally I find the 2 litre cars very much like the 65's, but the 3 litre beasts are a law unto themselves.

The only common ground seems to be the total lack of torque at low revs for all cars ( except maybe the 2.7 and 3.0 litre Brabs which seem slightly better).
 This I find is the biggest headache when developing a setup. You need a 1st gear that is low enough to punch off the grid and out of those slow corners, but this often means that the other gear ratios now have to be spread out so that you do not run out of revs in top gear. With the narrow rev range in which they can deliver the power the timing of gear changes is critical, as you need to hit max revs in one gear so that when you move up a gear and the revs drop you do not hit a dead spot. Only trial and error will tell you when you have it right.
So, once you have got the ratios somewhere near workable.. The 2 litre cars I set up similar to a 65. They are not quite as sure footed as the 65's and the extra horsepower when the engine is "on song" can make things a little exciting if you are not careful. The go pedal needs to be applied with some care out of medium speed corners to avoid the tail breaking away. I run roll bars maybe front 15-20lbs higher than rear and bump rebounds at 3 all round. Diff settings might be a bit radical for some, I think I ran 45/60 with 3 clutches. Brake balance was around 53%, but I left foot brake so that might need some tweaking if you use your right foot.

In last nights race I was able to keep my 2 litre Brab BRM on the tail of Tristan's 2.7 litre Brabham for the whole race, even managing to get alongside occasionally. Tris had much more power on the straights and could pull a gap, but I could close up under braking and through the corners. It was a great race as I was looking for a mistake from Tris to steal the lead, but it did not happen.

For the 3 litre race I chose the Eagle ( mainly because I had a setup from somewhere else and I love the engine note lol) I expected to be outgunned on the straights again, but was hoping that the handling would pull me back through the corners. Probably that was a big ask for the Eagle around Imola, but it was a fun race and I was looking for some close racing.
For the Eagle with less BHP, 1st gear is critical, but the power band from that lovely V12 is quite good, so the gears can be reasonably spread although I tend to make 4th and 5th quite close as the grunt drops off at the top end of the rev range. Compared to the Lotus 43, BRM etc which are like pendulums with their tails likely to overtake the front wheels at any moment, the Eagle feels nicely balanced and with my setup I can get the power down early out of the corners.
Again roll bars were about 10-15 higher at front, bump/ rebound 3 all round but front bump might have been 2 to aid turn in. Diff was 60/60 with 3 clutches and brake bias at about 52%.

I am a firm believer that a setup has to suit your driving style in order to extract the best times, so what I suggest here may not suit your needs. I know that JR did the defaults and for the 66's, and for drivers with a similar style they will work fine. But I cannot get them to work for me, so I have to start from scratch and develop my own.

After many years driving only one make of car, I now have a huge choice of projectiles to play with and very few setups that work as I want. I am sure that it something to do with the colour of the car but I cannot find where I change that in setups!! :-\ So prepare to see some interesting cornering techniques as things develop with Blue Moose. lol

I will share my setups with anyone who wants them, just drop me a PM.

So that's why you came so quick behind and past me in your fast Brabham.
All in all it was a good event on a special track.
Congratulations to the Podium and to all Finishers as well!

So long

.....Blue Moose?

I must have missed the post that announced that announced the demise of Hikiwaza, but I feel I have to ask where you got Blue Moose from?

Thanks for all your comments on 66 setups. I'm on holiday now, but I'll have a go at them when I get back, and PMs will follow.

Cheers
