Title: UKGPL Season 24 (2013) Formula 2 Trophy - Reims - Jan 20
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on January 15, 2013, 11:55:29 PM +0000
THIS POST IS FOR THE LIGHT & HEAVY RACES

The organisational bit first. As at the time of posting we have 30 registrations. If everyone turns up this will give two relatively full grids. I realise that people have other things in their life (nagging wife etc) & won’t attend every race. We will start the season on two grids – Heavy & Light Divisions. If attendances fall below 10 cars per grid then the series might run some races on one grid – but there will still be two championships.

To close off Season 23 which was the inaugural Formula 2 series I should congratulate Hristo & Phil Thornton as winners of the Light & Heavy Divisions. Phil’s reward is promotion to the Lights – which should pretty much scupper his chances of winning but he won’t be saddled with the Ferrari or BT14 again. On the subject of handicaps the chassis  restriction rules have been relaxed a little from last season – see the Registration thread. For the first two rounds there are no handicaps. Might be a little boring if everyone opts for the Matras – but we will see!

So to the track - Reims-Gueux was first established in 1926 on the public roads between the small French villages of Thillois and Gueux. The circuit had two very long straights between the towns, and teams strove to maximize straight-line speed of their cars; many slipstream battles ensued. Race organizers actually felled trees and demolished old houses in order to make the circuit even quicker.
International racing came with the first official Formula One event occurring in 1950, the inaugural year of the Formula One world championship. The circuit layout was shortened and changed in 1952 to bypass the town of Gueux; and the circuit was then renamed Reims. The layout was changed yet again in 1953, it was made slightly longer and faster; two fast curves and a hairpin further up the RN31 highway were added. The circuit was last used by Formula One in 1966 and the last car meeting was held in 1969
The Lights will run on T7 & the Heavys on UKGPL 3. Please ensure you join the correct race. The Driver list is shown below & the Championship Table can be found here F2 Trophy  (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=389&theme=6)

One other important change to the rules – only one reset is allowed per race & must be followed by a compulsory Stop & Go in the pit lane. If you Reset on the last lap a 30 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.
In line with other divisions the races will be subject to full moderation in the red zone which will be to the apex of the first hairpin at Virage de Muizon. The Moderator may chose to investigate any other incident, in addition to reported incidents & red zone incidents.

Please note that for UKGPL has introduced a system of penalties within each series for drivers accumulating yellow cards – see here
Penalty Points (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring these penalties will receive a PM advising when a penalty has been applied & what race it should served.

I hate Reims , in spite of the ancestry I always feel its a motorway not a race track and the scenery is dour  ::)  needs a tilting bridge or summat to spice it up  ;D

hi..... :)

...about shift-r & SandG.... ;D....do we have to do it in the same lap ?...cause it may be big problems ....imagine 3or 4 or more cars in the same crash .. ???...every body have to pit in in the same time !!??....hummm! will be fun !....so why don't give 3 laps to do it !...? like when you get a black flag , you have 3 laps to do it after that you are out of race....
...and for the same reasons, in the pit , you must stop at your box ( your name appear when you come in the pit )....
....and what about the limit speed in the pit also !??

...héhé :P

and that is quite enough for any Moderating team  ;D

Tristan,
The expeceted behaviour is to take a Stop n Go at the first opportunity. When moderating - ig a driver does not pull on the first lap I will watch the next lap. I don't insist that the SnG is taken immediately but if you have not complied within a couple of laps I will assume it has been forgotten.
Trust that helps ... Bill

Tristan

Bill is right but you can also find the information in the Sporting Regulations (https://www.ukgpl.com/index.php/rules/sporting) which apply to all the UKGPL races unless the Divisional Moderator specifically overules them.  Here it states "A S&G must be taken within 2 laps of the Shift-R", exactly as Bill said.

I'm not registered for this series but circumstances may see me available to make today's round at Reims.  Any chance of my entry being accomodated?

I'd probably be classed as LIGHT from what I can make out from the GCR's.

If my internet plays ball then I will be making tonights race - I've taken a few cars out for a thrashing now and am wondering if there's anything the mods would rather I didn't drive for the sake of fairness tonight?  :)

This might be my only race (aside from the 65's on Tues) for a month or so dependant on the move and internet installation times so bare in mind I'm unlikely to be a championship contender this season (Although I'm also very new to the F2's as havn't really raced them outside of the odd fun race)

Think you can afford to miss 2 months races without it affecting your score to much due to having to drop your 2 worst results regardless  :)

Sorry for the first lap incident, all my fault (slight mitigation of violently flickering red car on my left hand side causing me to miss the braking point).... couldn't be arsed to race after that, as I think I spoilt 4/5 people's race, so just retired.

Realy and totally pi**!d off with Gpl right now.
Friday night in qually the mouse pointer changed to some weird heiroglyph and clicking on any button had no effect. Too late to join server after pc reboot.
Tonight the same problem, with the added weirdness that clicking one setting, e.g. camber one notch it set the totally opposite. Also I couldn't access
any previous setups ????  But got back in for the race, made slight-very slight- contact with the back of Rog.uk at the melee on the first lap and the car was launched like an ICBM.
This at about 3mph!!
After sng and Shift-R I came down to the hairpin at the end of the straight, outbraked myself, swung the wheel LEFT to get room to make the cut through back to the track and the damn thing went right- explain that one. Stuck in the wall, one reset already taken, goodnight all.
Hope everyone had a more successful night of it.
Cya Tuesday.

great fun while it lasted.

fair qually, good start. missed the troubles at turn 1 so lucky there.

got down to have some decent racing somewhere middle to rear of pack and was really enjoying it.

did myself another disservice by being a little too cautious and staying wide so as not to cause any probs, but caused myself to run wide and touch the dirt... so off I went  ;)

did my one and only shift R but sorry to say I appeared on the track in front of someone else.  sorry and hope it didn't cock things up for anyone else. It shot me up in the air a bit but didn't seem to do any harm. car was handling  just as badly as before so i knew i was alright.  i think its was the car that followed me into pits so i hung back a bit and gave the place back.

took my pitstop and went out to another good session of racing, but once again run wide while spending more time looking in my mirrors than where i was supposed to be going and ended up in the hay.

so no shift R's left, so an early bath for me.

hope it went on to be a good un for whoever was left racing.

till next time...

Paul. V.

Had a cracking race with Bernie early doors. Got away from him after Bernie stopped for a pie. Chased down Billy and passed him to get up to fifth but a few little errors dropped me back and then I went off at the dreaded corn trying to give Fran room. Found myself racing... Bernie :(

Finally some close racing and then I span out at the last turn. Then accelerating away from that my pedals got stuck so I couldn't accelerate but Geoff bumped me across the line...

Fun race but ultimately disappointing.

The importer found you as an historic driver so I had to correct it manually. There is no record of you having joined the team. Did anyone send you an invite?

For those who got confused, I ve driven in a us league F2 before we started with it and I had to use my real name, Thomas Oulie, and it came up as T Oulie I think. I slept all day and didn t even have time to dress before qually.(thx god my mom didn t drop by). Seahrced desperatly for a setup since I didn t remember what car I used. Found a Mclaren and of I went.:)
My teammate Al tried heroicly to help me with some draft but I was too clumsy to take advantage, however with full tanks on last lap I was in lucky drafts that seem to work for quiet some distance and got up from bottom to midfield.
As we know there was a clinch among the first cars and I found myself on 3 rd. It lasted until I missed brakingpoint before the hairpin busy looking in mirrors. Started to count signs 1, 2, hey WTF :scared: and off I went. I was rewarded with a very interresting race with Evil,Al and some laps later Tim and Natan (Ithink).  I think Evil Al and me made so much trouble for each other that we were caught. Evil was unfortunate to go wide,or was there a touch? with few laps to go and I decided to lurk behind the pack of three and see what opportunity might come.I saw my chance to glue Al in his efforts and we managed to get 1 st and second of the pack :D wich gave Al 4 th and me 5 th .fun race. Sorry for the lots who had too end it way too early.

Disastrous race, again, not of my own doing. Qualified 6th after setting the early pole time on race fuel.....amazed when I realized my mistake, but happy for the coming race. Couldn't buy a draft in qually, every time I crept up close enough to 'someone' for a draft, the bonehead would spin off at the next corner and rob me!   ::)

Got a fair start and had 4th after T1 the first time. We were all a little hesitant in the lead pack early on but it was settling down ok by the back straight. Until the end of said straight. Jonny O played bowling ball and skittled a large portion of the lead pack, yours truly copping the worst of it....ending up flying inverted over the fence.  ??? ???
Reset and blasted in and out of the pits for a S&G....then settled down to try and catch anyone ahead of me.....Anyone???....are you there? Nobody for miles, and Jonny had continued without hardly missing a beat up to around 3rd or 4th.....Justice?

Apologies to Boggy for cleaning you up at the end of the back straight on the next lap. I didn't think I was close enough to cause either of us any bother....until you braked about 100mts before me.......Arrrrgh.....all brakes locked and a passenger. Sorry again, should have checked prib to see who was ahead of me. Could have been forewarned then, that you would probably brake earlier than me. No damage done.....must be built by BRM this Protos!!  ;D
Set off again in pursuit of the field, and eventually caught a group comprising Dave Curtis, Pierre, Paul Villiers and after a spin ahead of us, Fabio.
Cracking race Dave, had a blast dicing with you over those middle laps.....which dragged us both, after PaulV spun off at the cornfields, up to the Bernie, Badblood group.

Looked like having the chance  of picking up 1 or maybe 2 more places in a slipstream to the finish line......however, Badblood spun at the last corner tapped the wall and BACKED onto the racing line.....you guessed it, right in front of me. Nowhere to go.....BLAM. Of course, I was getting used to it by then   :-[ :-[  Instead of picking up 1 or 2 extra places, I lost one to Fabio who drafted past me on the home stretch. Congratulations to all those that avoided other peoples accidents. In his defence, Paul did hand me his position before the line....however unintentionally....so I can't be to upset with him.   ;D

Thanks Dave for an entertaining and fun dice while it lasted. Excellent driving on your part.
Geoff.

No worries Geoff
My first foray into F2 but just couldn't get braking point at end of back straight?? After our little coming together I ended upside down, so S/R and pitstop and was keeping up with the back of field til header failed on pit straight and had to retire
Cheers

I think the ghost of Mrs Fujikawa is exacting revenge for the demise of Hiki Waza!!

Either that or I have an extra large magnet hidden in my car somewhere!!! :-\  For the last few races I seem to be getting dragged into other peoples misfortune and this race was no different.
I made a deliberate decision to hang back at T2, because that is where things usually go wrong on Lap1 and with the draft on this track closing 200mtr gaps is no problem. Sure enough, there were cartwheels and somersaults amongst the leaders and I smirked..........but too soon  :(,.    Just as I thought I was going to sneak through and gain about 4 places a car lunged at me and sent me across the grass towards the cornfield!!!
After my 300mtr detour I rejoined undamaged but a good mile behind the leaders and on this track without the draft, that is an almost impossible mountain to climb. I caught Al and we enjoyed some fun laps which got more exciting when Tom joined us in his Mclaren. The party grew when FMG and his Protos caught us ( our slipstreaming moves were actually slowing us down I think lol!).
Again I was thinking "hang back, you can only win positions out of the last corner on the last lap" so I had reconciled myself to sitting back and enjoying the ride..................until................ braking for the hairpin at the end of the straight. Tom was in front of me on the outside with Tim and Al on the inside lane, but I think maybe Tom was being cautious and braked just a little earlier than I wanted to and I realised I was closing very fast. Maybe I would have made it without taking Tom off the track, but I opted to throw it off the circuit instead so I tried to demolish the building on the left.....I failed, but the car agin survived intact.

The rest of the race was lonely and without the tow my lap times were about a second off the pace of all those in front, so I trailed in last.
Big Grats to Phil and the podium and thanks to Al,Tom and FMG for some fun laps.

See you all next time, but I am fitting rubber buffers all around my car for the next race!!

Lol Geoff & Evil sounds like you were having my kind of race  ;D

I spent qually sorting out gear ratios and the race trying to get the feel of the track beyond the outer limits of the first corners . Once I got the hang of staying on track and out of the corn fields the race turned out to be lots of fun , suprised because I wasn't really looking forward to this track from previous experiences with it .

Not looked at the replay yet but think I might have helped someone (Billy ? ) up the escape road on one lap , appologies if that was the case , my solicitor will of coarse argue that you selected reverse gear on purpose  ::)

Grats to the podium boys and thanks to all involved for the fun racing   :)

however, Badblood spun at the last corner tapped the wall and BACKED onto the racing line.....

I can promise you that the movement was not intentional - I completely lost track of where I was and found myself facing the right way. I thought I would let you past and slowed but saw that you and Fabio were battling and pressed the accelerator as I didn't want to give FL a place as well and got.... nothing. In the melee, one of the kids balls had got under my pedal and stopped it depressing. If I had gone for it from the corner, I would have had time to sort it...

Jim Clark never had to deal with this sort of thing y'know ;)

Hang on a minute, I only ever had 1 guest drive as a Waza last season.....she's not picking on me too is She??

I think Evil Al and me made so much trouble for each other that we were caught.

The fact you were fighting instead of working together meant I was holding position approx 6 seconds back - I eventually managed to get the Protos to exit the hairpins a bit faster after a few laps and gained maybe a second over the space of the next 8 or 9 laps.
I only really gained when Natan had his off and rejoined behind your pack and myself before the main straight - I had a draft all the way to the bottom of the hill - In a Protos that means >180mph! :o and put me in the trailing edge of Toms' (I think) draft.
From there it was easy to catch you guys over the next lap and things suddenly got interesting again.
Then I misjudged my acceleration out of the final hairpin on the last lap and instead of jumping everyone to take 4th managed to finish a whisker behind Natan about half a second before blasting past everyone  ::)
That trick worked for me in P&G driving a Shelby Daytona, but it seems the F2's were too closely matched to let me repeat it :'(

Shame about the accident at the start - had I not been caught up in it then the Protos should have been a contender for proper victory!

Not sure at all !

Congrats Phil for your win with the Light Division.
It seems you really want to drive again with the Ferrari DinoF2  ;D

Congrats to Ed/Bip/Shunji/Eric for his fantastic win on the Heavy Division.
I made one error by distraction and could not follow him but I have no regrets : Ed and his Matra were really faster than my Brabham and me.

Thanks to Ed's slipstream, I got a very lucky pole position.

Jonny has forced me to come and race just started he tried to eliminate me ! With friends like him, you do not need enemies .  :2guns:
Fortunately I managed to jumped into Giovanni's wheel , which allowed me to return to the head of the race.
I stayed safely in 4 or 5th place to wait between the leaders kill them.
Very strange , I do not understand the Giovanni's maneuver  in a straight line, it seems he has not seen the car "late" in front of him! I was a little afraid of hitting one of two accidents.
After he left one gangster to remove and 10 laps.
But Dave quickly became seppuku and Shunji could make a  "victory triple Banzai" (not easy to master an F2 raising his arms to heaven!)

Thanks David.  I'm still very surprised to have won but the secret with these machines here was the slipstream.  I didn't make a mistake so I didn't loose the tow.  I lost time under braking for the hairpins but with the long straights that wasn't a problem.  The reason I got to the front was because most other people made a mistake on one of the slow corners and by the time they had recovered they had lost the tow.  A very very rare race, I'm usually the one making the mistakes.  I'm really pleased with a win (due in no small part to JR's brilliant setups ;))

Hi all,
good fun during the last laps with 4 cars together.
Qualif , i'had the last time ...  :-\
Sorry for the shock with G.Giovani without consequences .
It's a pity for Jonny'O : he should have to win easily against ED76/Asunaru :-*

Yes I do owe Phil an apology for predicting he wouldn't win a race in the Lights. All goes to show that clean consistent driving really does pay dividends!
Whilst Round 1 was not without incident I think it was a good choice of track that offered almost everyone some close racing at some point or another. These F2 cars really do exploit the slipstream - Monza 10K later in the season should be a blast.
Very pleased that we had two (almost) full grids & hope that we keep it up for the season.

Clearly there are no other Lola-fanciers here then! I do find the big arrow on the front helps me...
Due to a chance comment at a practice session,   I did have a run around in the Protos & managed to get it around approx .4 seconds quicker without a tow.

But come the race, I (again) thought the server would know best,  so picked the same.... ;)

Inherited a bunch of places - not that I was really expecting to keep them.  Then sure enough,  gave them and more away instantly by forgetting to turn & took a long trip into that pesky cornfield.
PaulV - looks like we just reset at the same time & materialised on the same bit of tarmac.    No need to have waited - I was hoping to get a tow away from the pits :)

Yes, was certainly a lot of fun out there.  It was all quite contested at the back & through to the midfield once some circumstances ahead cleared the way somewhat.
Back at you Geoff - it was rather enjoyable section of the race!    With meeting up with the other chaps out there;  the last few laps got rather busy :)

Only been to this track a couple of times & (as a novice) it seemed maybe an odd choice for these limited cars.  But - maybe it was an inspired choice of venue!   I'm again surprised with how effective that tow really is.

Cheers all,
Dave.

This track is all about maintaining tow (and breaking it). It always produces close racing although the track itself is fairly boring.

A races with two different faces.
It was very exciting on the first part, with a great ace start and the fight with team mate Dave and Giovani.
Then, after a couple of mistakes I dropped on the back and I wasn't able to reach the ones in front of back.
I guess it will be an interesting champ!
See you soon on track

Grats to podium    Enjoyed this race great fun with the drafting, i think i was shunted off about 4 times due to late braking, then did it myself caught up with Billy sorry. Track choice was ideal for the 67f2 cars. Quote  (Couldn't buy a draft in qually, every time I crept up close enough to 'someone' for a draft, the bonehead would spin off at the next corner and rob me!) that was me Geoff65 not intentional to you and some offs were deliberate needed to adjust car  ;).

In those days, the last lap was something to watch. The leaders would approach Thillois on tiptoes, watching each other while taking the turn at 20 kms/h, waiting for someone to blow a fuse and take - sorry, loose his chance.

I was at least hoping for some kind of apology/acknowledgement of involvement in my demise from the lead of this race with a podium at worse on the cards from a driver I have a lot of respect for and still do :(

If an incident isn't reported it won't be investigated.  I was sorry you crashed out, I was enjoying our battle.

Ronnie,
The rules are fairly standard for most divisions. The Moderator will check every incident in the red zone (which was fom the start line to the first hairpin), together with all reported incidents & that Stop & Gos have been complied with. The moderator also has discretion to look at other incidents, but we don't usually do so. I assume your incident must have occurred after the red zone. I'm sure many incidents go unreported but we would encourage drivers to report incidents - even ones where you have been at fault!
