Season 24 Works Trophy (67) - Round 3 - Nürburgring

The third round of the season will be at Nürburg in Germany.  An iconic track, loved by some, hated by others.  Commonly referred to as "The Green Hell" thanks to Jackie Stewart, the Nordschleife provided the ultimate challenge for the Formula one drivers in the 1960s.  With 160 turns over 14.2 miles the track twists and turns, rises and falls through the stunning countryside of the Eifel mountains.  It is still regarded by many as the most demanding and difficult purpose-built racing circuit in the world.

The track can be downloaded from : N/A

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The race will be run under PRO rules so no resets are allowed.

The chassis token system is explained on the Works standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=387&theme=6). Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start line to the Flugplatz. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

Just a warning to all drivers tonight.

I have spent many hours this weekend trying to "fix" the bugs in my PC. The only way I will know if it has worked is by trying it on a race server.

If it becomes obvious that things are still bad I will quit during qually, but if things look OK I will start the race ( probably at the back of the grid ( ahem!  not from the pit lane  ::) )

If you see me warping excessively during qually, let me know and I will quit.

If I suddenly vanish during the race .................I apologise in advance.......and another mouse might be reduced to its component parts shortly afterwards :cursing:

EDIT....

From my view it all held together for about an hour (qually and the first part of the race). I was not aware of any warping, but let me know if I was . No 5 second blackouts and not a disco...I crashed out. But this was more a test than expecting a result, so I was happy to follow in close company with Doni and Ronnie to see if the graphics could cope with 2 cars ahead and all the scenery.

My screen is still not as sharp as I would like  BUT IT KEPT WORKING!!!!

Maybe a few more trials and few more tweaks and I can start concentrating on racing again  ::)

Pleased to qualify 3rd but that was about as good as it got. I was about to join the grid when I noticed I'd somehow under-fuelled - a hasty top-up followed which caused me to miss the bloody start! First time in 200+ races (and after all the debate about starting from the pitlane too  ::) ). I couldn't have chosen a worse place to do it either, as I not only had to wait for everyone to leave the grid but then joined to find I was starting from the Nurby qualifying position - i.e., about a mile back before the start!! :( Gave chase & after a few laps reached my teammate Tom who kindly let me pass his BRM. Looked to be on course to catch Dave for what was then 6th but then my engine blew on the long straight. Was kind of a relief really as I'd have been gutted if the engine had let go had I been fighting for a podium place. WD to JB who looked to have the race well under control when I quit & also to the Barf boys for what looks like a team 2-3.

Yes Al, 2-3 for Baarf it was. And beat my PB at Nurby by over 2 secs. Our best team result so far. These are the nights that make it all worthwhile  ;D   It was a real shame you didn't make the start. Given our qually times I was expecting a close race with you. Your starting position was pretty cruel, but I was glad the Mods put it there for qually...

Normally I make pretty good starts, but Baab got the jump on me tonight, and I didn't fight him for the first corner. After that I tried to just get it round consistently.....until I came round to start Lap 3, and saw that Phil had made 2 secs on me, and I put the hammer down for a bit, and got that PB. Can't have got any draft from Baab, as he was 4 secs quicker than me on the same lap, and already way ahead of me, so it must have been genuine pace....which will confuse me forever, as I have been trying to beat 8:15 for years!! No idea where it came from.

Also extremely confusing was the fact that on 3 of the 6 laps I went off at Klostertal (?? the tightish long right hander at the top of the hill, just before Karussel), on one of them I got stuck for 20/30 secs. It felt like the brake bug that ruined the fun in the Porsche series - you go to brake as normal, and it just doesn't. Anyone else had this?

Anyway, well done to everyone that finished (and King Hiro, who lost it somewhere around Tiergarten on the last lap with all the other finishers watching him  :D..close enough KH  :P)

Arf

I started to practice the ring on Saturday morning and the bradbam felt awful (not been there in brab for years), i changed the setup several times until i landed on one that felt more as i wanted it, i got down to 7.52.7 in the morning. Qually was good with a new PB for me posting a time of 7.51.5, without mistakes i made (as always small mistakes at the ring) i could have gone quicker
Race started and i felt fine although a little nervous at the thought of 6 laps without any major offs, Hristo passed me on the inside into t1 and i followed him until he lost the rear out of a slow turn in s1. I kept really focused as i knew he would be on the hunt for me with only a 3 second gap between us.
on lap 2 i span out of the carousel but didn't lose too much time and still kept p1, the rest of the race was a matter of keeping focus.
Well done to all finishers.

a pleasing win.

After watching the rp in hristos car to see what happened to him,  it looked like his setup was as awkward as mine felt earlier in the day.

Yeah, I had no practice at all for this race because I was driving in rFactor the whole Sunday (testing a league mod that I'm tweaking), so I was both tired and unprepared to match your pace, JB. It looked good after I took the lead at the start, but pushed too much too early and spun on the exit of the slow left-hander in the twisty section. After that I tried to push as much as possible and even managed a fastest lap on lap 3, but the car was very awkward to drive and my mind was simply wandering off, so after numerous mistakes I finally lost 2 wheels in a bigger off. Grats for the win, great pace!

It isn't funny Al but I have to admit I chuckled when I read where you had to start...

As you found out in the race, GPG server is set with pitstall after Little Karoussell. Commiseration to Al that had to start from there.
Let me know if you want to restore the default pitstall for future races.
Ciao

I would much prefer if we use the original pitlane. It's pointless to start a lap with cold tires and you definitely can't warm them up enough from that position.

Aren't the default pitstalls ahead of the start line, meaning he'd have been an entire lap behind, instead of only a mile or so?

Yes.  I prefer the pit boxes to be where they were for this race, sorry Al.  I know you can't warm the tyres properly but to me it is better than driving an entire lap, especially if there is little time left to start the lap (perhaps because my skills are somewhat less!).  Same for everyone.

Great night for Team Baarf, although it almost took a perfect storm of others misfortune, some of that is just racing, and of course Al's heinously harsh fueling error.

I managed to shave about 6 tenths off my pb in the race, being chased by Arf...from a bit of a distance.  The last two laps I eased right off as I saw I had a gap of a mile.  Even with that, my laps weren't too bad (for me), around 8:14.  I was pleased to make the distance, though I did spin a few times.  In praccy I could barely drive a lap without totalling the car, hence I'm happy to have been able to keep it together.

Bob.

Like Dean I thought the default pit stalls were ahead of the line and yet I seemed to be on the same lap as everyone else. At least that's how Prib was reporting it - not sure how that worked. Anyway to add the final comic touch to my inept start, in all the confusion at missing the green flag & then appearing on a grassy knoll miles from the startline, I even set off backwards after managing to select reverse instead of first... twice! :wetfish:

When the pit stalls are in the second half of the lap distance, it's considered behind the s/f line. When it's in the first half, you're ahead of the s/f line. So if you start from a pit stall that is in the first half of the lap, you are considered a lap down, in a race. Since you started in the second half of the lap, you were on the same lap as everyone else because you passed the line before they completed lap 1.

When the pit stalls are in the second half of the lap distance, it's considered behind the s/f line. When it's in the first half, you're ahead of the s/f line...

It's not that complicated. You start on Lap 0 (whether on the grid or from a pit stall). When you cross the finish line for the first time, you're on Lap 1.

Daytona Road Course (67) is a good illustration of this, with the start line on the back straight and the finish in front of the grandstands. If you start the race from the grid, cross the "start" line, but don't make it around to cross the finish line at least once, you'll be classified DNS (did not start) ("start" is in quotes there because it's meaningless to GPL).

If you miss the start at Daytona, and join from pitlane (stalls are behind the finish line), you join in time to make it to T1 in front of half the field (test done with 67F1 cars). So that's one track where shenanigans are possible; I'd assume there are more (but they don't come to mind atm).
