Title: UKGPL Season 24 (2013) Privateers Trophy (67) - Monza - Feb 10
Post by: BadBlood on February 04, 2013, 01:37:15 AM +0000
The third round of the season takes us back to familiar terrirtory. We will be at the classic Monza in Italy. The track was officially opened on 3 September 1922, with the maiden race the second Italian Grand Prix held on 10 September 1922. The track has changed many times over the years, not least the addition, and then, closure of the high speed banking. This is the classic layout. No need to say more really. Classic track, one of the original Papy 11 and the spiritual home of F1 for the Tifosi.

A high speed circuit, you will have needed to save your tokens up here.

We will run Intermediate Damage with the allowance of ONE shift-R reset. No Shift-Rs are allowed in practice unless authorized by the moderator. A Shift-R (fault or not) MUST be followed by a Stop & Go. A Shift-R for tyres/fuel is not allowed. Any driver taking more then ONE Shift-R OR failing to take a Stop & Go will be disqualified from the race result.

Race List = IGOR

Race Time = race starts at 21:30 UK time
Qualifying Time = Between 30 and 60 minutes, starting no later than 21:00 UK time
Track = Monza (Papy original)

Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Replays Available here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_replaysS24_js.aspx)

Driver lists and token rules can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=388&theme=6)

The track can be downloaded from the link in the race list above.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start line to the exit of Parabolica. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Privateers (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=388&theme=6) standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Hmmm. Not great. I am good at blowing these Brab engines.

First time this has happened to me (two things actually):

Audio strobe glitch. Noticed it after I went to update my controls. Didn't adjust the audio, but when I came back everything was 'loopy'

Then I ran out of fuel with 5 laps remaining! I set ballast to 33 laps in my setup (20 gallons). Not sure why I ran out, it's always been accurate for me...

Grats, Cookie, I never quite had enough to challenge. That Eagle's a rocket out of Parabolica.

Bit of a follow my leader race for me , got a flying start into P4 before Sophia Loren Corner ( AKA Curva Grand )   then on about lap 3 while looking at prib to see where everyone was I ran off the track (On the straight bit lol ) got a wobble on , and lost the place to Fabio who very kindly  gave it back a lap later when he ran out of bakes at Parra . After that it was a sunday drive home , the 3 podium boys were gone into the distance (play fair and slow down will ye ) anf the only challenge then came from Tintin' Lotus who pressed me for a while but then faded away .

Grats to teamy Mike for being highest climber and a good solid soggy finish  :)

Bit of a shabby performance. Got caught out in Parabolica about 3 times - which is unusal. Ran into Dave 's spin in the Lesmos - Shift R + SnG left me too far behind but I stayed to the end. So a rather waste of tokens on the Eagle.

Hendy - I think the BRM is a bit thirsty on gas which might account for running out of feul. 5 laps is surprising - maybe it uses more because the cars is using high revs for most of the race.

It seemed like a terrible showing whilst I was out there.   But skimming back through the replay,  it could have been worse.

Somehow started from 5th, so clearly others behind had issues of their own during the practice session.

Very slow away/bogged down & mugged from the start.  There was some paint swapped out there;  apologies for being there at the same time.

As it turned out,  maybe I should have used up my reset during the race!   However,   I was sure I'd pop the engine at some point - so pushed on.  Damage report fairly hefty - so maybe I'll try claim worsening poor handling or something....   But just between us, I just could not get into this '67 event.

Apologies for the inconsiderate spin in front of you Billy - just could not get the power down for some reason.  The reason is partly because I was in neutral.

From consulting the replay,  had a couple of rounds of it's a knockout-style 'who can go the slowest around Parabolica / avoiding contact'  with Adam & Geoff.   Worked out ok really, apart for my resulting spin at approx 2MPH!

Also took it in turns with Geoff to hand places back & forth like some hot potato.  In the closing laps, was hoping to sneak another couple of places, but remained consistently untidy everywhere.

Ho hum, provisional 10th. Well, was hoping for something better - but it could have been even worse.

Cheers,
Dave.

One thing I would be grateful for advice on. I have gone negative at Monza so I (just about) know how to drive it but I couldn't get below 1:33 for the Braby. Should have stuck with my trusty Honda.

Any idea what top speed I should be acheiving down to Parabolica? I was getting mid 170's, which seems a bit low and the engine revs were very high but I couldn't actually get the gearing lower... :(

The Braby has a very good torque at the midrange, so you don't need to rev such high...
Make the gears longer and drive allways a higher gear as you would think ;)

Thanks Dean,
my Eagle was flying out of the corners, but I had to look for the tire temps when I pushed too much.

Paul , have shufty at GPL addicts (Steve's Stuff )

I was using his brabby set up which is actually a barty mee set up , the gears are spot on , not sure if the set up will work for you though and i did use a longer 4th & 5th  gear for the race , wasn't quite as quick but didn't destroy the ungine either .

I also tried the 50deg FOV like what Hristo said , found it a lot better to see cars alongside , though that only happened during lap 1 i think it saved me having side contact with one car in particular going into T1 and possibly saved a disaster  :)

. . . . .  I was getting mid 170's, which seems a bit low and the engine revs were very high but I couldn't actually get the gearing lower... :(
If you want to get the gearing lower, despite the gearbox not being brave enough, you'll need to change the rear end ratio.  That will lower all the gears, so you'll first need to grab your pocket calculator, or rough estimating machine. ;)

A good result for me .
Many thx to Geoff  :angel-wings: which gave me confidence with its advices i applied for the set up.
So my qualification time was significant better (>1sec)  than i could hope sunday a.m. . :D
The race : still difficult to find the good behavior for the start and during the red zone. As the ahead line started  cool, i "waited" and do not try to overpass and so few racers overtook me immediately on the grid.
After that it was a relatively good race but i needed a shift-R when the engine has blown . :scooter:
Very happy to run with you ; and we did fun and interesting pre-practices , everybody waiting the other in order to have fun battles and to increase the close car control ..and it was necessary indeed .

No problem tintin. perhaps a longer top gear would have saved your engine...I forgot to ask you about your gearbox when we were on the practice server. Anyway well driven, good result..:)

Yes it could.  :) Have you not noticed that I wanted to lap you? It took me several laps with 1 little off on my side which nearly took me out. Instead of let me pass you were like fighting for position. There were no blue flags for you?
But nevertheless all in all a good finish for myself.
Congratulations to the other 2 Podium-Guys  and to all finishers.
So long
