Title: UKGPL Season 24 (2013) Sports Car Trophy - Rouen - Feb 15
Post by: BadBlood on February 12, 2013, 02:28:40 PM +0000
The season continues for the closed wheel enthusiasts. Back to the GT formula for the third round of the combined championship for the GT’s and the Can Ams.

We stay in Europe and return to a familiar circuit for the GT's. No excuses for not "knowing" this track. Rouen, in northern France on the River Seine, is the capital of the Haute-Normandie (Upper Normandy) region and the historic capital city of Normandy. That information will not make your lap times any faster, nor will it increase your standing in your local community, but it does add an educational element to this race post. It was also easy for the race poster as I cut and paste from the last GT race here...

The rules are simple….

You have a free choice of car for every race, BUT you cannot drive the same car twice. So if you take part in every round you will drive 5 different GT cars and 5 different Can Am cars.

You are allowed a single Shift-R  followed by a Stop’n’Go  which must be taken  within 1 lap.

All starts will be from a loose staggered  grid. There will be NO rolling starts this season, so please be careful .

"Please ensure you are aware of the in-series penalty rules. Details are here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring a penalty will receive a PM informing them of this."

np FP! Axel saved the day with UKGPL8.

Hope it was enjoyable. Rushed back from pick up of my twins from Girl Guides and got on track one lap and then... family crisis. Drat.

Rouen and the GT cars, my least favourite Papyrus circuit and GPL mod respectively. Things did not bode well but I was determined to enjoy the nights racing. Its clear that this format is leading to some interesting racing with cars of varying abilities within a track let alone between tracks. Anyway despite my initial misgivings regarding the track and mod another enjoyable race was had. A contact between eventual podium man Nicky and myself set me back but the cut and thrust racing just continued with different adversaries. Apologies to my team mate Al for when I slewed across the track losing complete control under braking into the corner at the end of the back straight. For sure I cost you a podium or better. Grats to Dean, Nicky and Axl. See you guys next time.

No problem Ronnie - when I saw the replay I realised you must've had a brake lock or something as you skewed diagonally under braking. Terrific scrap up to that point. To be honest, my chances of a podium were already compromised on the first lap - I made a decent start & was up to 2nd behind Dean but at the end of the long straight Sergio made a very late dive up the inside, i.e., after the turn-in point... seeing his closing speed down the straight in my mirrors I was half-expecting it so stayed as wide as I could on corner entry, but Sergio's car entering so fast swung wide into me & so I ended up going from 2nd to 8th :( Good racing in the pack though. By the end I'd got myself back up to 3rd but the Lola (geared for engine preservation mode) was no match for Axel's Chapparal & he swept past me easily 2 laps from the end. Well done to Dean, Nicky & Cookie.

I spent most of qually trying to work out why my gearbox was broken!!! lol

I was using my shift stick and from the onboard view I was selecting gears, complete with the correct clunking sound but........................no forward motion!!!! In desperation I switched on "automatic" mode which worked . but geez is that wierd or what???!! ....I could not drive like that!! :o

I even tried a different car with no success. Eventually I re calibrated  the wheel and used the paddle shift. By that time it qually was over so I started last on the grid with an untried setup..lol. this did not look good!

Basically the car was a lemon. It handled like a drunk whale and insisted on testing various parts of the scenery for impact resistance. The only good point was that the Mk2 proved tougher than the scenery and despite many hard knocks the handling was unaffected...well it would have been difficult to tell if it had been damaged!!!!

I think I can claim a record for a GPL race. The most places gained in a race without passing a single car that was still on the tarmac!!! From last to 5th just because I was stubborn enough to want to get to the end of a race lol.

Grats to the podium and to all those who finished. Hard luck to Fulvio who had caught and passed me with 2 laps to go and then kindly pulled off the track at the end of the straight to let me regain 5th place. ;)

Well when Axel locked his brakes into the hairpin I got the lead and things were looking pretty sweet.  Half a lap later I just ever-so-slightly put half of my left rear onto the dirt at turn 1 and that was that.  I managed to claw and scrap my way back up to third, and then the latency bars started bouncing and jiggling around.  Sure enough a few corners later my Prib list was swept clear and I got the dreaded network error message coming up.  I pressed on, expecting to get kicked at any second, but strangely no.  I now existed in some kind of alter-dimension where I could see Evil (the driver) but no one else.  Amazingly after three or so laps my Prib list refreshed again, just in time to pass the stuck Lonzar at the hairpin.  "Second!"  I thought, but then I saw according to Prib everyone was red- meaning I was laps behind everyone.  I stuck it out to the end, but server says I was 11 laps down.  Curses.

Yes I agree, I thought to remain very close to the inside of the corner but probably I was a little too fast at that point to accomplish my thoughts so, also if I was very overlapped just some meters beyond the turn-in point and I was in good control of my car, it was not possible for me avoid the skid due to your direction Al, maybe because my tires were not warmed up very well or maybe not but it doesn't matter at this point then my apologies are due. Unfortunately the new world has been fatal also this time for me and I was angry at the point I've forgotten to press <Shift>+<R> so I finished disconnected. Nice race anyway...at least very fought untill my crash at 21st lap. Usually I hate the GT's Fezza but this time it was at least drivable and I made too many mistakes to deserve the podium.

Well when Axel locked his brakes into the hairpin ...

Yes, what a shame!

After the s+r and s+g I had to do the best out of this situation, but I made some more mistakes... ::)
To the end I had a nice battle with Al for the last podium place, with a Chap also in "engine preservation mode".  ;D

It seems Marks position has to be corrected!

:) :) :) big hand to Dean on great win !!
hope its possible to count Mark for beeing 2nd as he really was , despite his lap16 was under warp/network error ghost controll.

race for me was full of changes. slow but save under braking setup made my Lola very enjoyable to drive.
warp created side by side contact at first turn after start put me back 2nd last. But over the time I was back P5 mostly due to missed braking point/brake issue happend to others. After Ronnies car slowed down a bit on appex of hairpine after the long straight at L10 ( coz his Chap touched left sidecurbes ) I couldnt avoid to close up side to side. Contact made only me lost 2 places. But brake issue too Rainier on L12 and collision between A.Heller & Ronnie on L14 pushed me P4. That was that, no chances to catch up the 3 front runners. Bad luck on Sergio and network error on Mark let count me 2nd in the end. But as I said above , I hope this will be corretced.

All in all an very great race .big fun  :) :)
