Post by: BadBlood on February 15, 2013, 02:58:41 PM +0000
UKGPL Season 24 65 Novices Trophy
Race 3 Mexico City

Welcome to the third round of the Novices Trophy for Season 24.

We are in the Americas. Our race is at the historic 2.747-mile race track "Autódromo Hermanos Rodriguez" in Mexico City, named for the famous racing drivers Ricardo and Pedro Rodríguez. This track first hosted F1 in 1962 when Ricardo was killed in practice for the non-championship event. Despite this inauspicious start the course was a staple of the F1 championship between 1963 and 1970. The grip of the 69X (aka 65s AHEM) is useful on this track and should provide some close racing if we can avoid the deadly polos. However, be aware that it could be a little crowded when we get to the esses first time round. There will be crashes and patience is a must. The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone.

As always patience is ESSENTIAL. The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will be the ENTIRE first lap

Please check the Season 24 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=386&theme=6) regarding rules and the Novices Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=393&theme=6) pages in particular.

There are NO chassis restrictions for this race. HANDICAPPING will be applied from ROUND 4, if necessary.

The Novice races are run under Int Long rules and all incidents in the red zone on Lap 1, at least, will be moderated. For this race, the red zone extends to the whole of Lap 1. There is no limit on the amount of resets but EACH Shift/R MUST be followed by a Stop n Go.

65 Patch: The 2.02 Release of the 65mod can and should be used. You need a working installation of the 65 mod to install the 2.02 Update. All the 65 Mod files can be found here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Mods/1965)

Hi, just a quick question re tyres.

I fully agree the grip of the 69x's will help here

so where do I get a set of 69 slicks for the 'ol 65 then ?

Well it was going well for 2nd but was having some bad lag from my end i think. It didn't clear up in the race and i could see the query bar rising and rising all of a sudden, then pop.

That's going to hurt my chances in this champ for sure as i can't make the next race.

But i'm still here so it's not all bad ;)

Well done finishers :)

Well - you get to drop two results Andy and Jonny has moved up but by a technicality you may get away with no handicap next time whereas Geoff and Gio will have wheel clamps...

Had a fun race. Got as high as 7th with a good start and then Dave frightened me at T1 which made me overbrake and lose three places. Bernie and Billy kindly span and gave the places back but Bernie took two laps or so to gobble me up and Billy didn't have to wait much longer. I set about chasing Mr BN waiting for the famed Nobrakes 360... but no, he just drove away from me... swiz.

I then found myself under big pressure from Ross and Al with a handful of laps left. I knew they were faster but I was wider. Kept it together until Lap 20 when I lost the back end at Peralta which I had not done in 60 odd laps of race, qually and practice... double swiz. Ross drove by and as I got going Al biffed his way through. Drat and DOUBLE drat. That put me into the clutches of Johnny P. And I made my Honda VERY FAT. Hope it was fair though Johnny.

Great fun.

Couldnt get in the mood at first so took things easy , quallified on race fuel so was pleased with set up , avoided the usual T1 pile up then had a set to with Dave but spun when stomping on the the brakes ( had to avoid rear ending you when you had a quick warp and wasnt sure where you was on track ) ended up in the barriers and luckily no damage , by the time i got sorted Paul had gone through so set off after him , Paul can make that honda really wide so wasnt easy to get by , fortunately i had an xtra long 6th gear fitted for the race which gave me a good tow , once past Paul I prib was telling me Dave was 12 secs in front with 12 to go and was suprised to find the next was 11 secs with 11 to go , finally caught up , but catching and passing are 2 different things , on the penultimate lap I got a good tow down the straight got alongside , clenched the cheeks of me arse and went for the pass , narrowly missing the armco but pulled it off , once more enjoyed some great clean racing in these little cars , looking forward to the next .

Grtas to the fast guys & well done to all who finished with there wheels intact  :)

I certainly scared myself a couple of times round about T1.  Strange, because in my test laps last night (admittedly in a different car)  the first few turns were not a problem.  I was just untidy & slow,  but it wasn't getting hairy!

With Bernie gaining on me,  it seemed I was edging closer to the 2x battling Ferraris ahead.  Of course, I'd have never got past - but that target seemed to be getting a little bigger.
Then some mishaps & Bernie just plain quicker  (maybe you were not slewing around scrubbing too much speed?!).   So maybe just time to just let him past & he was off up the road.

There were a couple of times when my sound disappeared for just tenths of a second.  No obvious issues,  but that was disconcerting at the time.

I still don't understand the tow;  maybe I was just not quite close enough to anyone - but there does not seem to be anything noticeable in these cars ???

Anyway, cheers lads.

Dave.

After all the rhetoric from previous races about being careful at the start I was nudged into the barrier at T1 and lost a wheel. I missed the pit entry on the next lap so went for my stop and go on lap 3 only to be shunted from behind slowing for the pits- possibly from the same car that put me in the barrier...I need to see the replay. I had a couple of spins all by myself during the race but would like to forget Mexico. Congratulations to the podium especially to Gio who is driving really well. Paul- I never really got close enough you were faster than me.

Hi Johnny,

It was me both times, but it’s a bit different from my point of view.

I got a great start and kept to the left (my start position), I got along side you and was starting to think about braking for turn one. Now what I didn’t know was Geoff, also got a great start and was on the other side of you. He was a little in front of you and you started to drift to the left to give him space, and unfortunately I was in the GPL blind spot, and you drifted ring into me. I made sure that I kept a straight line, and I was marginally in front of you, but I was in your blind spot.

I must apologies to Ross, because I made a really bad rejoin at this point, and ended up going straight into his car. The only thing I can say in my defence was that I did wait for the pack to pass me, and I waited for a spot to rejoin, but the number of cars my PC drawn was quite low, and he just appeared on my screen, mid-rejoin. I really should of checked Prib, to very sorry to Ross for my bad rejoin.

The second one was really strange for me, as I had no idea why you suddenly slowed down so much, even after watching my reply I still could not understand why you were so suddenly so slow. Thanks for clearing it up for me in your report because that one had me scratching my head :)

My last little bump came with Badblood on the last couple of laps. He had a spin at the hairpin and was sideways across the track and I hit him :( I too had a few little spins all on my own and overall Mexico was a race to forget for me.

Congrats to Podium, and such impressive speed for Gio, well done buddy, it looks like we are all chasing you at the moment.

Hi,

not so bad for me last night.. PC running Solid as a rock with no glitches so was happy there.

managed only something in the high 1:59s in offline practice, so did a few qually laps on full fuel etc and could see early on i wasnt a contender, so was happy to be near the back.

followed all to T1 and made my way through a couple of cars, settled down then to what was a steady and completely uneventful race for me.

times got a bit better as they dropped to 1:58, then 1:57 and was going Ok, but lonely at the back.  got up to 10th and was happy with that but towards end of the race the concentration was beginning to wane a little and only due to accidents and pitstops etc there where still 3 or 4 cars behind me.

I knew I was at least 1 sec or more slower so it was only a matter of time before they caught me.. and catch me they did. glad to say it was Jonny and Badblood so didnt feel to bad to be passed others of the "Moose" persuasion.

got back and lost a few places throughtout the race, had a slow motion kind of spin while driving alone..  let a car pass while I got going again and basically just drove on auto-pilot until the end.  :P

I find Mexico a track with lots of great corners and seems to have a nice feel to it, but boy for me it seems to require so much concentration and input I find it exhausting.

anyways another finish if nothing else, and nice to have not had a crash or needed a pitstop etc.

just thin that I need more practice in getting these little cars to go better. must try harder to get me corner speeds etc up.  that and probalby every other aspect of how i drive  :D

congrats to all on the podium..

Paul V

The 65's tow isnt as strong as it is in the 66mod , you do have to get a lot closer to the car in front before you can get in the slipstream , its actually more realistic in 65's than 66 and 67 mod for that matter .
You must have a longer (higher ratio ) top gear than you would use if lapping alone , the usual thing is to have the car geared to red line at the end of the straight , but when you get in the slipstream,  you can pick up another 200 rpm or so due to there being less "wind resistance" but only if you gear for it , otherwise the engine will be on the limiter to soon and won't get the extra revs

My first good race of the Season.
Good start, passing 2 cars, a good and steady pace for the whole race and then... the gift of the podium from Adam!
Geoff was really quicker and I really hadn't any chance to fight with him.
Because of some small mistakes Rog got closer during the final laps but I wasn't really worried about him.
See you all at Aintree
Cheers

Thanks for the info. Bernie - that explains a thing or two.

Rather uneventful outing. Overran one corner early in the race, but otherwise kept things consistent. After the race settled down I realised that I was slipping back from Bernie & Dace C & would need someone to have a mistake to improve my position. Badblood was kind enough to give me my place back twice & stayed close enough for most of the race to keep me focussed. Glad to finish mid-table & unlapped.
Well done Fabio - for getting a podium finish for the team.

Yep, at that point I did have a  moment, to say the least.  I saw that there was an incident ahead, I lifted to allow myself a chance to react if necessary, but gotta say that I didn't anticipate the move that followed.

I don't have the pace that many other drivers demonstrate, so my main strategy is to keep out of trouble, and stay consistent. To have contact at T1/Lap 1, and losing so much ground to the cars ahead made it a tough struggle.

Thanks for acknowledging it though.

My race afterwards, saw a decent dice early on, with Nigel & Paul (albeit, it was costing me 3-4secs per lap) while I was trying to recover ground following T1, then a long chase to BadBlood, who drove consistently ahead, but for one small error on the penultimate lap, which saw me pick up a late position.
