Matt, you may need to state which track version your going to use. IIRC there are two layouts in this install?

I Thought I had?

It says "Track: Rouen VLM 55-70"

Is that wrong?

The GTL install contains two tracks. Don't know about the GTR2 install but it's probably the same.

EDIT: Just checked and I stand corrected. There are two tracks but your description correctly identifies one of the versions. Sorry.

Yep, the other one is 74-94 and has a chicane after T2 and turns right before heading up the hill for the long straight.
I decided to run the traditional one.

Good choice. We had a cracking race in last seasons Fifties trial here.

This will be good, I can feel it. I love this place from GPL.

Kerb police should be able to sit at home swigging tea  ;D

There still seems to be some confusion about what is not acceptable.
Let me say it one more time.

The SROUK regs say "Drivers are discouraged from putting a wheel on the grass" etc
To help people decide how that works, my request is that people keep two wheels on the track surface
as much as possible. White lines are track surface unless stated otherwise in the race announcement
kerbs are kerbs and are not track surface

Putting a wheel up the kerb is fine.
Occasionally putting a wheel on the grass whether that includes two on the grass and two up the kerb at the
same time is unlikely to be an issue, Regularly driving with wheels on the grass or no wheels on the track
surface is likely to attract attention and risk an incident report, which may or may not get you a penalty
depending on how it looks to the moderators.

We like to limit incident reports or it stops being fun and becomes a witch hunt, no one wants that.
Follow the guidelines as well as you can and all will be well.

any times yet? For me, Pantera seems to be fastest, followed by Porsche and Capri which doesn't really seem to want to go round corners. The 60s cars are fun in their own way, but frustrating when driven back-to-back with the grippier ones; didn't get a representative lap in either of them while my mind was adjusted to the 70s cars.

Original Test times:

Ferrari 275 Speciale                  2:16.8
Panty BOSS :                          2:17.6
CObra 289 Coupe (Wilment)       2:17.6
RSR 2.8       :                          2:17.7
Capri 2600:                             2:17.7

I have since gone a second or so faster in the Panty, and I think that is likely the fastest car here
though I expect pro beetle herders could make the the RSR 2.8 a race winner.

For comparison sake my best in the Capri is a 2:19 ish.

my best in the Capri is 2.20 but I manage high 2.16s in the Porsche in race trim and there's still some time to be found. I like that car and will probably use it for the race; even if the 60s cars turn out to be faster over a lap, they will also put me into the forest faster.

The Panterra will definately be my choice, even though the brakes seems to overheat real quick on the many long downbrakings :o
Every time I get to the end of the long straight, I'm a nervous wreck  ;)

The performance of the tyres and the brakes are very realistic features in P&G V.3 IMO  :thumbup1:

I will take RSR.

Fastest so far 2:12.7 with race fuel and soft tires. With mediums about 2:13.5 than drop to mid 2:14 after 5 or 6 laps... goes like all hell through the fast corners like first four of them.

I may take the Panty as I am probably fastest in it, and it's an easier drive
I so love the 275 SPeciale though.....

Looks like the Porsche will be the car to beat here. I tried the Capri for several laps last night with a best of 2.14.5 & very little more to come. No way can I get it anywhere near 2.12s.

Will probably still be in the Capri though!  8)

I'll probably be in the Special, have got it down to 2:14 on softs. Not a fan of the Pantera and I've driven the Porsche quite a lot, so fancy a change.
Now Geoffers has mentioned the Capri though, it sounds tempting as well..

Spoilt for choice again this week.

Obviously I like the 2.8RSR and don't think I've raced it yet, but I do have unfinished business in the fezza from Monday's GTL race. No practice as yet but might hop onto the server after tonight's MARA race.

See you :)

It was restarted after GTL on Monday night. Don't know if it's had a problem since then.

I just can't complete a timed lap without braking the car (any of the cars). Obviously I could drive miss daisy round a few of the bends & make it, but that's not enjoyable. Normally I enjoy traveling sideways semi-intentionally.
I just can't find anywhere near the limit on about 33% of the corners (i.e. there's a fair chance I'll kill my car every 3rd corner) ??? :-\ ::) :'(.

Also is it just me of does the Porka have a rather large advantage (on paper) here? (i.e. best cornering motor + 2nd most power to weight + newest tyres +a very tricky track!) With the Capri having inferior handling, less power & shoddier tyres... Surely the only car with any hope of keeping up is the Pantera if it has some good opening laps? Of course, that's all on paper only as I can't complete a codding lap! >:( >:( >:(

A five year apprenticeship in GPL is the first step.

I agree that it is a difficult track but at least it doesn't have any poxy chicanes in it!  A proper track.  ;D

Believe me, these old buses are much easier to keep on the tarmac around here than the '67 cars in GPL.  The GPL cars do the lap in under 2 minutes as I recall.

As for me, I seem to have lost it completely.  Was doing low 2:13s at the start of the week and now 2:15 is all I can muster.

110% concentration will be required tonight.  Just to finish.  And that's how it should be.

Well done Matt.

Lol, it must be contagious Clive, 'cause I was doing low 2.12s on low fuel last week, but now I can hardly manage a full lap without making a major mistake  . Doing steady 2.16s for a full race will probably get you near or even up on the podium tonight  ;D

Crocodile tears.  ;D

There is always a car with an advantage for some people, the RSR is not the fastest car here for me
but it will be for some. The Panty is an easy drive here I thought. maybe it's a setup thing.
In early testing the 275 was way faster for me than anything else, but later testing has the
Panty as the fastest and easiest. Whenever I include a Porka, I try to add one that for me
is a second or two slower than the other cars as that's about how far off most people's pace
I am in them compared to "normal" cars. Initial testing had the Capri as slightly slower
since then it has been quite a lot slower for me. Some cars take "special skills" to get
the best out of them.
I will post my setups later if anyone wants them. Mostly just easy listening tweaks to the defaults.

Thanks Clive, we aim to pleaze  ;)

Yeh, this and Zandvoort were my favourites of the default GPL tracks..

Got in a few laps in the Capri last night and i'm at a similar pace to Geoff - hopefully get into the 2:13s in qually, more like 14/15s for race pace. I haven't tried any other cars.

Had a few laps last night in the Porsche and it's a wonderful drive here. Still a bit of work to do on setup and technique as it keeps trying to kill me at T1  :o I managed to get down to mid 2:12s in race trim but haven't tried light fuel and softs yet.

I don't mind self handicapping as long as I can still choose a car I like. It's no secret that I enjoy pork, so that's what I'll be driving tonight even though it appears to be the strongest car (for a change  ;)). If I think it's a bit quick I might take hard tyres for the race, but will have to see who turns up in what  :-\

My biggest worry is losing connection which is getting far too common for me recently.

Title: Re: UKPnG Season 8 Sports Car Series - Rouen - Apr 4
Post by: Manteos on April 04, 2013, 12:28:54 PM +0100
Yesterday I tried a bit even with the Pantera, and I must admit that is a great fun to drive it here. My best lap in race trim was a 2.12.7, with the chance to go down 2 or 3 tenths. With the 275 Speciale I'm stucked at 2.13.8, but I'm really close to the limit in almost every corner. I will see what people will drive tonight and their laptimes when I'll jump into the server to say the last word on my choice.

"My biggest worry is losing connection which is getting far too common for me recently."

It's not just you I guess. I'm experiencing a lot of discos on your server. My line fall after 3-4 mins approximately every time I join your server. Did you shut down and restarted all your GTR2 servers, included the GTR2 and the P&G enduro? It often happened to me when I launch a server that I have to shut down all the servers in the GTR2 lobby before to restart a single server. So it would be better that when you re-start a server, before you shut down all the other, and than restart all the server. It was a common issue on our VDA servers in lobby. By the moment we adopted this solution we solved this problem.
Is it only me having this connection issue on the P&G server? It's strange, cause usually during the race day my connection works pretty well when you have only the P&G server in lobby.

I hope to come back in time for the race. I don't want to miss it!

See you

On Race night only the server for that race is ever started, all others are shutdown.
After each race the admin will restart his and the other practice servers in no
particular order.

Tonight I will shutdown all the practice servers as usual and then start only the P&G3 race server
That is our normal procedure.

I have seen a few people discoing from our servers during
non race practice. Nik was one who one evening could not stay connected for more than
a few minutes, so I started a dedicated server at my house, and he and a few others joined
and had no problem at all. Was a bit disturbing, but recently he seems to be able to
stay connected )as you say) for the race itself. There are a few people who seem to suffer
with discos. I occasionally get dropped when someone else joins but is very rare, and I can't
remember being dropped from a race, yet GT, CLive and others do.

May be the way our server routes to different people, but GT and Clive are in UK as the server
also appears to be.

p.s
The Enduro practice server is mine not the SROUK one.

I'll take the RSR too, because it's the one which looks like I can handle

So family-in-laws over visiting tonight, I've battle with the Mrs to be "aloud" to drive & drivers ahead stuff up T1. I slow down beyond belief but can't do anything to avoid what is fairly light contact really. Get going again but steering is bent & I'm off at the next right hander despite a cautious approach. So race over after spending a few hours practicing last night & another hour build up tonight.

Really glad I stood my ground & argued my case to drive tonight.

Glad that I choose the Capri which I totally forgot in the lineup - six seconds faster
than in the RSR yesterday and still room left.
Great fun - as long as it lasted. Nice battle with Tony and Matt. Some contacts with
Tony - then I lost the car and crashed into the barrier - finito!
Quite sure that I hadn't finished because I was on soft tyres which already began
to fade.

Swapped accidents with Geoffers for a while and finished 6th.  I think.

Ahead of Simon anyway.

this race once again proves what may be called 'Grosjean's Law' - those who manage to keep out of lap 1 incidents will have a good race. Sorry for those who got caught up simply by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

My race was the reverse of last week's - I had a good start, got past Animal Ed who stalled on the grid and then everybody tiptoed around the first lap with no incidents I could see. Then things settled down, I got caught by Manteos and drove around in 5th. Moved up to 4th and eventually 3rd when people in front of me fell off and tried to chase down Goldtop which proved impossible in the end and I had to focus on defending from Animal Ed. In the end, I brought it home in 3rd and was really pleased that I didn't make any major mistake, and could keep Goldtop in sight for the entire race. I didn't expect that, with my best time prior to practice today a 2.16.

I think I may have benefited from the gamble I took on a tall first gear and long gearing overall, and from medium tyres - previously, I always raced on hards!

Congrats JohnW and Goldtop!

A frustrating race in the end for me. Took hard tyres to try to lessen the car advantage over John, but then struggled all race with front end grip and balance. After John passed me on the back straight on lap 1 there was nothing I could do to close the gap, so ended up with a bit of a boring drive until I was almost caught by Manteos and we had a close couple of laps. You very nearly had me off going into T1 there mate  :o Anyway no harm done.

Congrats to John for the win  8)

Always try to deduct from the pitboard if the leader is behind me or some fast car from the back of the grid but this is easier.

Sorry to hear that ;D Seriously though, very sporting of you :thumbup1:

Congrats to John. Really appreciate it that you switched your headlights on.
Always try to deduct from the pitboard if the leader is behind me or some fast car from the back of the grid but this is easier.

Thanks. I try to make a point of turning them on when lapping, safest way in my experience. Thanks for the lapchart, by the way.

Managed to join the server with 7 mins to go, without having a shower and the shin guards still on my legs ;D, so I had the chance to do a couple of launched laps, without being succesfull in my attempt to take at least one of the first two raws.

I deliberately tried to race with soft tires, hoping in a good start to have some chances of a comeback. Started 7th I immediately gained the fifth position, and than I started a desperate come back on Gt and John. In the first 7/8 laps, tyres were pretty good, and I was gaining something on GT trying to take the second position. I passed Ed and Niels, and I focused my race on Gt. Then I had a little misunderstanding with him in my overtake attempt, but I think to have been polite in my manouvre. There was a huge difference between our cars in cornering speed, and I just had to brake before you, so you was probably surprised by that move, but I stayed on the internal line, that I took before my braking zone. Luckily this episode didn't damaged our respective races.
The rest of the race was a Calvary for me. I just cannot keep the pace of the Porsches in front of me, and I gave up during the last laps, when I was unable to gain neither a tenth on Ed and Niels, and my tires were a bit too worn.

However, I had a good race on a track that I really like in one of my favourite cars, so it was a cool racing night. Who knows if I had started in front with John and Gt if the race could have been a bit different at least in the first half.

Grats to John for the great pace, Gt and Niels that complete the podium. Hope to see you soon ;)

Of course Manteos, as I said in my post no harm done. Contact through T1 is always going to be a bit of a heart stopper though  :sweatdrop:

I knew that my start will be really bad because of extra long first gear so I was just trying to keep straight line and survive first corner. Than eventful first lap - first I wasn`t happy how Manteos pass me with elbows sending me wide almost of track after the harpin but ...  after I saw replay from his point of wiew, there was a gap that I was trying to close too late - my fault.

Than Jarda hit me on exit of loong right hander - I was pissed off why ppl trying to win race in single corner with a car far superior in straight line speed but same thing happened again with Manteos at exactly same spot. I figured out that I can see corner exit but they can`t and when I`m widening my line (leaving space outside for them) they can not see that - but they should know better that they have top speed advantage more than 10 kph and be more patient.

My whole race was waiting for someons mistake because of top speed deficite and not so good acceleration from slow corners (Niels pull almost half a second on me in every lap from harpin to the right hander after back straight ... in same car with different gearing) but it was not boring because i had him on my sight all the time, had fight with Manteos when his tires went off ... and that was my best finish position since I start to race with you guys here.

Next target podium place than who knows ... president or something ...  :D
