Chortle.

For this one more likely something else will be added if required, but I am "fairly" confident that the
Porch is not the fastest car here for everyone.

another track im not sure ive ever raced  :-\  though sure some smart alec will be along to point out that i did 4 years ago or somefink  :P

Pretty sure the Alfas and maybe 2.6Capri will be kings of the hill here, though the twisties may also suit a well piloted lightweight 911  :)

Looked it up on wiki, interesting history...best be aware of virtual flying rocks on the night!

The Charade Circuit (also known as Circuit Louis Rosier and Circuit Clermont-Ferrand) is a motorsport race track in the Auvergne mountains in France near Clermont-Ferrand, the home of Michelin and Patrick Depailler.

Built in 1958 around the sides of an extinct volcano, the originally 8.055 km (5.005-mi) long Charade was described as an even twistier and faster version of the Nürburgring. Some drivers like Jochen Rindt in the 1969 French Grand Prix complained of motion sickness, and wore open face helmets, just in case. But 1970 was no better- Rindt was hit in the face by a rock, something that the circuit was usually littered with, and often caused punctures on the track.

The French Grand Prix motorcycle racing events were held at Charade from 1959 to 1967, and 1972 to 1974.

In 1964, the VI Trophée d'Auvergne Formula 2 race podium was a sign of things to come: Denny Hulme, Jackie Stewart and Jochen Rindt showed their skill before the track hosted the 1965 French Grand Prix.

In 1966, John Frankenheimer made the film Grand Prix in front of 3000 locals who posed as race spectators watching actors like Yves Montand and Françoise Hardy.

In total four Formula One French Grands Prix were held at Charade: 1965, 1969, 1970 and 1972. Due to drivers cutting corners, a stone thrown from Emerson Fittipaldi's Lotus hit Helmut Marko in the eye during the 1972 French Grand Prix, ending his F1 career, as well as the one of the circuit. The stones also had caused ten deflated tyres, but luckily no big crashes. The French Grand Prix moved back to the new Paul Ricard Circuit, where the French Grand Prix was held in 1971.

Formula 3, sports car racing, and touring car racing as when as Rallying and hillclimbing continued there until the 1980s when the original layout was criticized. Due to the layout on the side of a mountain it was not possible to build larger runoff areas, a similar problem as at the old Nürburgring. In 1980, three marshals were killed at a touring car race,[1] and in 1984 the drivers protested. The last race on 8 km track was held on September 18, 1988.

A 3.86 km (2.4-mi) abbreviated version of the circuit is still in operation, hosting races like Formula Three.

Looks a pretty cool track from the air:-  https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Clermont-Ferrand,+France&ie=UTF8&om=1&z=16&ll=45.741667,3.032098&spn=0.006814,0.021629&t=k&iwloc=addr

My perception is that we have run here lots of times, but the season history says no.
It is one of my fave tracks, which usually produces some tight close racing.

I "believe" from tests done in secret locations in the Midlands, the older Alfa 2.0 is the easiest
car to be fastest in, the Pork is not far behind in the hands of a good Beetle herder.
The Squashcourts are quick but need some setup and careful driving, the 2600 Capri
suffers here from understeering, but could be made to work.   :sweatdrop:

Well there are a cart load of PnG lap records at the top of this page!  Even Legzy has got one but that must surely be a mistake.  ::)

I can clearly remember being punted off whilst trying to wrestle a Cobra through the tight wiggles towards the end of the lap.

BTW well done to Legzy and Team Viagra on their points haul at Sebring.

It has been a long time since I visited this site, and I was intending to join you guys in the P&G3 races. However, I have just noticed that this race starts at 20:45 GMT. That is far too late for me, so I will have to wait and see if there are any earlier races in the future.

My goodness, it's been a while since I was last at this track & I somehow managed a rare pole position! ;D
I'll settle for being ahead of Clive this time ;) (& hopefully MJ will pull his finger out one day soon :-*)

That's a shame Mogget.

The races are not usually very long.

Legzy can have his Horlicks and get his jimjams on by 9:30; ready for nurse to put him to bed!

PS  2:12.something any good?

did a few recce laps earlier. Nice track, feels like a special tarmac rally stage in monte carlo or a hillclimb event!

Took the 911 2.5ST natch  ;)  feels lovely to drive around here swinging through the esses. Though it appears im already 2 secs slower than Clive  :(  2:14 with 40mins race fuel so far, but early days, i was learning the track really. :)

@mogget. Would be great to have you run here. We always start all our different series at 20:40 ish the races are mostly planned for around 40 mins
and finish 21:30 ish, can get late for Eastern Euros but mostly works well for Brits. I think Cumbria is GMT BST  ::)

Best times I have been offered so far:

Capri 2600 '71         2:11.64
Alfa 2000 GTAm '71  2:12.24
Porsche 2.5ST        2:12.45
Escort TC (217bhp)  2:12.93
Alfa 2000 GTAm '72  2:13.33
Alfa GTA Vol.          2:14.24
Alfa 1750 GTAm      2:14.39

Every time I do some laps I get faster, and faster in a different car...
The '71 Alfa 2.0 was fastest but now the Escort is fastest for me:

Escort-TC (16v)   2:13.5
911 2.5               2:14.5
Alfa VOlumetrico   2:14.5
Capri 2600           2:14.5
Alfa 2,0 '71          2:14.7

Porsche ( most fun car to drive by far ) with race fuel and soft tires: 2:11,193 but rear tires are finished after 10 laps.
With medium tires 2:11,287 but with that way of driving tires can not last the distance.
Mediums and pace about 2:12 - 2:12,5 it is posible but boring because I can see only one overtaking spot so I`ll go with hards and have fun no matter where I`ll end up.

This one looks a challenge for the curb police.  ::)

Difficult to stay on the track, even when you are trying to!

Title: Re: UKPnG Season 8 Grand Touring Championship - Charade - Apr 18
Post by: Mark J on April 13, 2013, 10:18:11 PM +0100
i think this track encourages use of the kerbs really, considering they are the low white flat type. Theres no advantage to anyone cutting an apex across the grass from what i can see as it instantly slows you down or puts the car out of shape, so using a bit of kerb should be fine imo. These cars are a handful enough between the dipping esses !
Wasnt happy being a tad down on time...2:11's now race fuel & meds online  :)

No doubt about it.

Need to keep two wheels on the track and the curb is not part of the track surface.

Thimple!

1 question for Matt:

If the best driver will be at 2.10.xx per lap, shouldn't the race length be a bit shorter, say 19 laps ?

As Clive says, still got to keep two wheels on the track, I didn't mean all 4 off!  :-*

@stig...is someone doing 2:10's then?! Though guess it wouldn't surprise me if the fastest guys crept into it.

This was one of my favourite GPL tracks but I not sure I can make the race. I will certainly not have much time to practice before Thursday evening, maybe a few laps tonight to determine which car I want to drive.

So please don't mess with car choice too much!

Thanks to all those who have posted times, that will help me narrow down choices.

A quick four lap test in the Alfa 1750 GTAm (50 per cent fuel load) netted a 2:13.37, so hopefully I should be reasonably competitive in the race. I don't particularly like the Porsches or Capris, and I can never seem to get any great pace out of the Escorts, so an Alfa will probably be my preferred drive. Keeping the car "within the rules" will probably be as tough a challenge as the race itself! There are so many blind crests with tight corners that we will need to know the track like the backs of our hands :)

I am looking forward to racing you again, Clive. It's been over two years! :o

I thought that this would be the mighty Clermont-Ferrand I knew from GPL - what a disappointment to see, having downloaded the track, that it's the modern Micky Mouse version! I could probably get the hang of this just as I did with Hungary and Sebring, two tracks I didn't really like before racing there, but this week I don't really have the time. For the real Clermont-Ferrand, my drive home over the Snake Pass tonight might have counted as unofficial practice  :whistling: but for this track it will not have yielded any useful lessons.

This will certainly throw up some issues of cutting the track - it seems to be designed to be cut.

As to cars, I was very slow in the Porsche, did a similar pace to what others achieved in the Alfas and Escorts (low 2.13s) and was much quicker in the Capri (a low 2.11 with a major mistake in it, I will easily do 2.10 and quick people will go at least 1.5 seconds faster). All of this was on race fuel, hard tyres and no setup work except checking the gearing.

Hope to join you this Thursday, not sure about car choice yet.

Car selection is solid, there will be no changes.

Why do we keep having these discussions about how to treat kerbs?

This is the same as anywhere else. You need to put a wheel up the kerbs to get a decent time in..
no problem. If you make a mistake and get your inside wheel up the kerb as well a few times during the race
I doubt anyone will complain, If you regularly drive 4 wheels off the track then expect an incident report.

I don't know how to make it any clearer. We are here to race not police kerb cutting. Just keep
2 wheels on the track most of the laps and don't worry about it. It's not that hard.

Perhaps we should get everyone to wear an electric shock machine so when you have no wheels on the
track you get a jolt  :scared:

Note: Race changed to 20 laps to half reflect  :alien: times

p.s @Mogget if you want an Alfa the 2.0 '71 version runs well here.

Times update: Capri is on 2:08`s with race fuel and softs. With mediums is 2:09 all the way to the finish line ... `71 is tiny bit slower but not much because it`s easier to put the power down (for me) ...

I`m staying with Porsche on hards and probably will skip qualifying if I choose gear ratios with extra long first - noone to hit me from behind if I stall (most likely) ...

Too many (family) activities, not enough time I'm afraid.... I'm only running 1 or 2 P&G races per month and the UKPnG schedule suits me fine (I especially like the British Historic Cup).

But if you would be so kind to share the password for WSL, then I would be happy to show up for a couple of races whenever I have a free Tuesday night.

My laptimes for Charade in the Escort TC are a bit disappointing at the moment (2:13’s), but will see how it turns out during the race. See you on track!

As there is a wall to modify your car against, and everyone will at some time anyway, for this race we will allow going over the outside kerb on the exit of T1

I suppose tracks with walls have a completely different set of rules then. Let's try Surfers paradise next, it has nothing but walls  ;) ;D

I wouldnt have allowed it at T1 either personally, just means cars like the capri can almost run flat through that corner instead of being technical/losing any momentum for a slower car to gain on it.

We, the management  :cowboy: decided that T1 exit is similar to running wide out of Ascari.
I was looking forward with loathing to the flood of "can we run wide in T1 or not" and all the post race
grumping, so I made an executive decision so everyone knows and there will be no "interpretation"

There is a similar patch of concrete on the exit of the LHer at the bottom of the hill before the hairpin, is this OK to use or is it considered out of bounds?

Hello, I am new here, and wanted to introduce myself and maybe attend a future race. It is unlikely that I will be able to race today, but I will practice offline just in case. I normally race with Mogget in the WSL and have raced against a few of you before. I look forward to joining one of your races sometime. I read through the "read me first" rules already. I saw that you communicate with flashing the headlights instead of chat during a race. I also read that if I bump someone, I can penalize myself with a drive thru penalty? I usually pull off the road to let the other car recover first. Please let me know if there is anything else that would help me out. Is there a different password to practice online before the event?
Thanks,
Walter

Hi Walter, welcome! If you go to the top of this page, you'll see the password to the race server and a link to the password for the practice server.

Yes, we flash lights and don't chat during race or qualifying. The leader will also try to remember to switch on his / her (do we have female racers among us?) headlights when coming up to lap people. I must say that I find the enforced chat silence very helpful, no more distracting sorries, thank yous etc. flashing across the screen.

I'll leave it to the more established members to comment on other aspects of etiquette.

but if you could all part aside like Moses and the tides as i steam through in my sweet 911 this evening, that will do for now  ;)

So far so good, I did about 15 practice laps offline, and then the soft tires started to wear out. Then I successfully joined the server and did a practice lap online. To top it all off, my wife sort of agreed to the idea of me doing the race today.

The only problem is that I need to improve my race pace (2:19.5), but that is normal procedure for me.

I'll cross my fingers,
Walter

Personally, I try to keep at least two wheels on the tarmac at all times. I don't really care whether local rules allow me to break that at one or two corners. I have a moral code, and I stick to it.

Not the best car set for me (I like a nice V8 muscle car myself), but I will probably be driving the Alfa 1750 GTAm. I doubt that I will be hitting lap times anywhere near 2:10, but there is more to racing than super quick laps.....

EDIT: I have just noticed that Walter has followed me here. Nice to see you, mate 8)

Bumped by a Capri behind me several times over the first lap, and ended up spinning after another bump at T1 at the start of the second lap. I really didn't have the enthusiasm to carry on when I had been so careful not to touch the guy in front of me at all.

Choose the slower Alfa because it is more fun than the Capri for me.
Set a new pb in lap 3 - have to look at the replay to see if it was a
legal one... - but simply too tired to concentrate during the whole
distance on this challenging track, so I quit.

Great turnout again. CU next time.

Had a very entertaining first half of the race. Being held up by John (I wont get to say that very often ;D) while seeing his teammate Clive gradually pulling out a gap ahead, over the first few laps. John then had a wobble & span, I had to slow right down to avoid contact & Nik nipped past from behind, meaning I stayed in 3rd lol
Then I was catching Nik & past him with Capri POWER, but I think I should have used Hard tyres not Mediums as he was very quickly all over me in every corner with his Porka for about the next 10 laps. Excellent driving by Nik & not so much as a scuff on our bumpers 8). Almost a shame to see him fall behind after what I think was a wobble then a spin shortly after(?).
So from then it was just trying to get to the end in one piece, there was no danger at this point of catching Clive & gradually the gap behind was increasing till the last couple of laps when my front tyres really were shot & concentration had somewhat reduced.

My 2nd PnG race here & my 2nd time on the 2nd step of the podium. Happy with that :)

BTW - Anybody who's not yet part of a team:

I wonder if you'd fancy joining Niels (NPP) & me driving for Team Oldie Racing?

Those cads @Soggy Bottom Racers (Clive, John & Senior Dan) have been dominating recently & won the last couple of seasons (booo, hiss!).
NPP & me have started scoring decent points more regularly, but could really do with another driver to hopefully help boost our tally some weeks.

If you're interested, let me know?
Chris  :)

p.s. Team Pseudo (Matt) would also welcome a new team mate. It's just another way to add to the fun really, scoring in the Team championships too & adds to the banter :)

Had a good race, albeit a very tough one. This track is very challenging and tiring!

Had a slow start to qually but then picked up the pace as I got my eye in. Banged in a 2:10.6 but that was still only good enough for 8th!  :o

Race was good from the very start although I got mugged off the line by a couple of cars. I was just thinking how nice and clean everybody was over the first few laps when Moggett sadly quit after obvious contact, sad to see for his first race here.
I pretty much chased animal Ed blinking hard for 90% of the race!! Very good fun and challenge.  :fencing:
It was excellent until we caught up with the two hooligans in the blue capris who seemed to be very fast but also all over the place!  :o Not sure what was happening up ahead but there seemed to suddenly be a fair bit if contact and it all looked chaotic with spinning cars etc. (if anyone feels aggrieved at any contact, submit it in the incidents thread and maybe Matt, myself or whoever can look into it) :detective:
it affected my rhythm and I lost some time but gained places from others having spins or running wide, running anything between 5th and 8th for several laps. Lost some time when John bumped me off allowing geoffers and Ed to recatch and eventually pass.
Chased Ed to the finish line! For a top 8 finish.  :)

Big congrats to Clive, legzy and Hotkeys for the podium on a tough track  :thumbup1:

It was very strange to be able to fight with John speedWhizzard
Of course this was only possible, because he was in a slower car  ;D

Had a look at the replay, and when passing Robert, I obviously tapped the rear of his car and set him a bit of his coarse.
I really didn't notice it when it happened, that's why I didn't let you pass me.

Sorry mate  :(

anyone would think the Capri RS held a huge advantage here with 4 out of the top 5 places taken up by them  :whistling:

Did wonder if all the late race chaos that happened was down to people running out of tyres? Did others risk softs? I was on meds and even they were pretty second hand by race end. Certainly was a lot of spinners in the last third of the race. I even saw Geoffers coming back down the side of a mountain to rejoin the track! :o
Sorry to see steady peeps like Goldtop quitting out with only a few laps to go. Dont understand why you quit though for a 'track disgression' with someone up ahead when you still had a top 5 finish on the cards?  :-\

ps..good turnout again last night with a nice spread of cars, well done to all that finished  8)

Yup.  That's why I was in it!

Had to give best to John's Escort in qually but made a better start and was pleased to see those behind fighting it out as it gave me the chance to get clear.

Old Legzy claims that John was holding him up but I think that they were really holding each other up.  I looked at the replay and saw that the two of them were side-by-side for half a lap.

I was less worried about my individual prospects once John had spun, as I was able to gradually pull away from Legzy.  I though that he might be on harder tyres and would be giving me some agro in the later stages but he had dropped to about 20 seconds behind by then and I didn't give a monkey's what tyres he had on by then!  ;D

I remembered to put my headlights on, as per John's guidance for being in the lead, but had to turn them off again as they were producing a strange disco effect on some of the walls and track sections.

Main scarey moment cam with two laps to go.  As I approached T2 there were two cars down the escape road and one of them was reversing straight towards me as I entered the braking zone.

As acknowledged at the top, the Capri was the fastest car, in my hands anyway, but it was a bit of a handful in places.  I have done plenty of spins like John managed at the last corner during practice.

It was a great showing by SBRC, only Old Legzy spoiling the party.  Grats to Stig, John and Dan.  I'm sure that I spotted Dan in the top three at one point in the race?

Good recovery from John, as we would expect, and a great drive through from the back row by Stig.  Think you may have to risk qually if you want the top step Stig.   ;D

Thanks to John for his 2:06.1 TT lap.  It was a great help.

Old Legzy claims that John was holding him up but I think that they were really holding each other up.  I looked at the replay and saw that the two of them were side-by-side for half a lap.

I was never going to keep up with a well driven Capri, but thought I could at least make him work for the pass (and help you get away in the process). Nice driving by the way, Legzy. You'd have got me on the next straight even if I hadn't have spun.

After that spin I had to thrash the engine to get back near the front, which worked, but I then needed to spend a few laps short-shifting near the end and hope that Geoffers didn't catch back up. Tried to push to catch Stig on the last couple of laps and ended up crossing the line with 1% engine health left :scared:

Good fun though. Grats to Clive on the win :thumbup1:

It was dodgy team orders I tell you :P

I looked at the replay and saw that the two of them were side-by-side for half a lap.
Oh my goodness, yeah I totally forgot about that!
I managed to get alongside John & hoped my superior BHP would help me edge ahead. But John’s somewhat superior skill kept us side by side for literally half a lap :sweatdrop:.
I remember as it was happening, trying to think of the corners ahead, trying to work out which one of us was on the best side of the track to be able to force an advantage... if we could just get a fraction ahead of the other! Really really great stuff (till he was the one who came out on top  :( ;) ).

Disappointing 8th place finish for me after a great fun first half of the race.

Early laps were mega with several cars dicing over what seemed like positions 4 to 10. Alfa struggled a bit for straight line speed but was brilliant on the brakes & lost count of the number of overtakes I managed at the final turn. Got into a great battle for 4th with Dan & Stig's Capris, with Dan & I doing several corners side by side. But Stig decided his Capri could outbrake my Alfa & pushed me off the track. Thanks for waiting though Stig  :thumbup1:.

Rest of the race went to pieces though. First I got bumped into a spin by a Porsche, then lost it under braking when I locked the rears & finally I thought I had discoed again when everyone suddenly disappeared for several seconds. Pulled off to the side of the track & was just about to quit when everyone came back just as MJ passed me!  ::)

Congrats to the podium, cya all next time.

You was bumped by me. I was kind a surprised because driving behind all of you seemed that only me was using that line and suddenly you were there attacking that kerb before corner start.
Clearly my mistake - description is not excuse, just what happened from my point of view.
I did pull over and wait, also tried to apologise after race but you wasn`t aware at that moment that it was me who bumped you.

Hard tires didn`t work (again) untill it was to late and I had my share of fun fighting with several drivers but just couldn`t outbrake noone. Only way for decent finish was to not make any mistake and wait for last few laps ... I wish it was 22 or 23 laps race  ;D

Grats to podium.

I admit to beeing too eager, sorry about that Geoffer, but IMHO you did have a chance to avoid it. If you look at this screenshot, you will notice that your wheels are pointing towards my line, even though I'm actually ahead of you at this point.

But I owe a VERY big appology to Dan for pushing him of the track in that same chikane incident. Actually I think you should file a report on me Dan, cause you were in 4 th position at the time.

I would find it OK, if I recieved a penalty or a disqualification for pushing you off like that.

That's the problem I had on lap 1 with another Capri driver. I don't really understand why anyone would think that a Capri can outbrake an Alfa into any corner. It shouldn't even be tried unless the cars are at least side by side (or you know that the guy in front is braking very early.....which I wasn't).

Rant over ;D

Was having a great battle with Goldtop and trying my best to keep it clean. When he re-passed me, his speed out of the turn was much slower than I expected and I spun him around. At the time, I thought he had half-spun by getting on the gas too hard, so I wasn't sure it was my fault. I waited for him, but when he pulled around behind me I went ahead to keep from blocking the track. I was going to let him back by, but after a few turns I didn't see him in my mirror. Sorry for spoiling your race, Goldtop. I'll try to be more careful in the future.
