Race 5 Zandvoort

Welcome to the fifth round of the Novices Trophy for Season 24.

Please check the Season 24 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=386&theme=6) regarding rules and the Novices Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=393&theme=6) pages in particular.

HANDICAPPING will be applied to any drivers in the top three who are within 20 points of the leader. Shouldn't actually make much difference here.

I am sorry I haven't got the moderation done for Aintree but as most of you know I have been unwell.

I'll catch up this week.

The BT7 may be not too far away from the other cars in Hristo's hands......but at this level.....it sucks.

I think there are 3 or 4 of us who could post the same thing....

NOTE TO ALL
Zandvoort is well known for its ability to wreck every ones races, it only takes the slightest mistake and you are a mile across the dunes, or worse still, upside down on fire on the racing line. TWICE i came round the sweepers 2/3 the way round to be confronted by a crashed car.. and there aint nowhere to go to avoid them there!
FFS you lot drive, to finish you b!!!!!!!!s, Zandy is not a place to push to the limit and yet you all do it!
I really am not amused!

BT7 isnt that far off on many tracks.... witness my performance 2 seasons ago in it...I won at 3 very different tracks in a car that may not have been the conventional "car of choice"

It is a pity Tony. You really must use the reset function. This is a difficult track for Novices - my first race I quit 'cos I was scared - literally.

Firstly sorry to Smith and Tony. Smith i'm sorry i clipped your car after you reset on Lap 1. And to Tony for getting too close and causing your accident through Hondenvlak. I tried to stay tight and cautious while i was chasing but i couldn't predict where you were going to be. You went into a slide and came back and i was too close to react. My apologies :(

Yes, i went sailing off into the scenery after i clipped Smith's car and was lost and disorientated when i cam to a halt. Punishing moments, for all of us, i'm only sorry that you were both involved.

As for the start, I've looked at the server replay and it's a clearer. I came in t1 slightly ahead of Giovanni but turned in thinking there was more room. Giovanni sort of warped into mine and that was my race screwed.

Came out last and things went from bad to worse. After clipping Smith's car my engine was down on power and i didn't realise until well over half the race had gone. So i reset and did a stop n go which dropped me back even further.

Looking to have a clean race next round.

Well done all other finishers and the podium.

As far as I can see Andy, Nigel didn't reset Lap 1, it was a bit more warp that moved his car. You didn't have any time to react. The same would appear to be true of you and Gio at T1. You could have taken a wider line in the interests of self preservation because warp is most likely on Lap 1 when the cars are close together. You were VERY unlucky. It would help if you would report yours and Tony's collision.

As for my race, one spin, three minor errors lost me two places which were promptly handed back by Gio and Al disappearing with two to go. The spin was annoying as I went wide but refrained from steering on the grass but still found myself backwards...

Had fun chasing Billy until the call of the jungle became too much for Mr N at Taarzen, span and let Bernie past and made a couple of errors chasing him which dropped me back out of view and then Paul V kept me VERY honest. He span off and from there to the end (~10 laps) I was on my own and just needed to keep concentration. Which as I have 'flu (real 'flu - HN1 - not Man-flu) was pretty hard. Pleased with the overall race. I have never gone well at Zandy and I wasn't looking forward to it. Better than I hoped for. Encouraging.

Apologies Paul V, for the clip that spun us both coming onto the S/F straight. I know it must have appeared that I was monstering you a little.... ::) But the reason i was so close was in simple terms....You- Lotus, Me- BT7. I was hoping to get a good draft from you down the straight and a slingshot down into T1 to pick up a little time after my unfortunate T1 spin the lap before.
If I'd known you were not going to accelerate off the turn, I'd have taken a totally different line....and run the risk of you running over the top of my sludgebox on the straight. Outdragging a Lotus in a BT7 is really not an option. By the time i realized you weren't accelerating and probably letting me go....I'd already opened the taps in antici------------pation
of making a little horsepower and following you. When i tried to move out from behind you I clipped your back wheel with my Left front.....and the rest is history. Not the ideal place to let someone charging past.....right on the exit of a corner......midway down the chute would have been a better option. Anyway....sorry for the contact, it was an accident.

In practice I could get a low 1.30 so I thought I could qualify well but when Al did a 29 early doors I started to think maybe I'm a bit off the pace. In the race I got a decent start and tried to be careful until things warmed up. I followed Geoff for 5 or 6 laps early on and seemed to be able to catch him all the lap but he was faster out of the last turn which prevented me grabbing his tow rope. He span somewhere and I got through with Al now my next target. He was fast but spun at Tarzan. I had an excursion into the dunes just once but managed to reverse out and get going again but with Al and Ross now in front. Not sure where I passed Ross but Al spun again to give me a place back. At the end some commotion ahead had me back off with a car on the straight weaving a little, I didn't want to get collected but this let Ross get close for a last lap race for the line. Not sure why Gio didn't win here as he was 50 seconds in front at one point. I saw several cars during the race facing the wrong way or in the sand and also one upside down on fire. Congratulations to all the finishers and a big thank you to several drivers who were very generous with their space on a difficult track when I was passing.

Hi Geoff,

apologies accepted, but to be honest non really needed.

I had been getting blue flags all the way up through the previous esses/corners  . I knew you needed to pass and did want you to..

if you take a look at the replay from my perspective you can see that you were hanging back, and thanks for that. i was trying to find somewhere to let you past and did wait right until just after the last corner to do so. I must admit i might have slowed a bit too much, not too quickly, if you know what i mean but i was trying to make a show of my intentions.. sorry if it was a bit confusing. I realise you were a bit miffed (and rightly so!) at the time but i was only trying to pull over.

didn't want to go on the grass or cross over the track too the other side ( insert Chicken joke here !!!)

but perhaps would have been better to have let you past further down the straight.  anyway mate I'm sorry it caused you to screw up your race. wasn't either of our intentions for that to happen.  I felt as though I had held you up enough and wanted to get out of your way asap.. it was perhaps a bit early in retrospect.

so I felt a bit bothered myself causing an off for you. as one thing I do pride myself in is having good track manners.   oh well Geoff... your just gonna have to give me a damn good thrashing at the next race :0)

I think the only grievance I have at all with GPL so far this season is faster guys not allowing enough time for us slower guys to get out of the way , I have already said that Geoff did it as it should be done. but i took the wrong place and time to let him past..

but can some of you fast guys please remember that we slower peeps need some space and time. when your all over our gearbox like an oily rag or darting up inside and outside or zig zagging all over the place behind us, then you will more than likely cause us to panic or do something silly... we might be a bit slower on the track, but it does not mean we are slow-brained or dim witted. we KNOW you are there and we WILL let you past.

it usually only ever ends in an outcome that means someones race is spoiled.

and having my race spoiled or me spoiling someone Else's race isn't why I enjoy GPL so much.

and once again I really enjoyed last night. had some great racing again with Badblood.. but then those "blue moose" guys are such brilliant drivers. ;0)

also had some good laps with Billy and Dave.. cheers all

Paul V.

Congrats Johnny, Ross and Bernie on the podium. Good racing and well done keeping it all on the road.

I'm still pretty mad at myself as I was really stupid during this race. Quali was good for me, I beat my PB quite early on with a 29, I was pretty pleased with the time but it was too soon to start pratice with race fuel. I managed to get a slightly better time and started 3rd.

The start of the race was good, I got a good run on Gio, but backed out of a move as there wasn't too much room on the inside. I settled into my pace and found myself second, afterI saw Andy go flying at turn 1. Gio was too fast for me, I did try to keep him in sight but I just couldn't manage it, the only good news was that I did have a good gap behind. Now the reason I'm so mad with myself, instead of just keeping a good pace and driving for second I started to push, an in the end I pushed too hard and span a few times, this let Johnny past, which ment I pushed so more, another spin etc......

After a number of spins I was 4th and chasing down Ross, I was catching him nicely and should of just been happy with my pace and kept it on the track. But the red mist was now fully down and I was pushing like mad, which of course ment that I span again, and again. At this stadge the red mist was getting the better of me, and so far I hadn't hit anyone else just kept wrecking my own race. I didn't want to get invloved with any one else so I quit the race. No idea what happened to Gio, but I did see he quit on  the same lap as me, but nothing to do with me.

Not sure  if I'll be able to race in the next few races as the mother in law is staying with us for a couple of months and after a few out bursts last night the wife doesn't want me racing while she is here  ::) So good luck everyone and I'll be back soon.

Hi,

might be my turn to apologize..

I have not viewed the replay fully yet but I had spun ( as i do !!)  and while spinning like a top I think Boggy came round the corner to find me in a right mess.

really sorry Boggy.   I left you with nowhere to go.  you only nudged me but it still sent us both flying.

I hope it didnt cause you to much trouble, i see you get going again.  really sorry mate.

I actually went up n over.  I think something is seriously wrong with the 65 Mod physics because i was in a Lotus and after this the car still drove perfect and no bits had apparently fallen off.

that cant be right for a Lotus can it ?

Paul V.

Grats to JP on win
Grats to Ross and Bernie on podium

Had some probs with GPL before race and race could not select the Fez car. never happened before, turning wheel right view shifted right as if i had pressed button but only at Tarzanbecht also prib was reporting cars lapping me when they were not.

SORRY BERNIE blaming you for rear end shunt last lap, watching replay my car looks almost stationery. car had decided to do a major down shift before end of straight.

What the ---k is going on with GPL?

Also getting this when i log into UKGPL
Something bad has happened. :-(

I've had that message a few times Rog. It is just transitory and is to do with the back end servers not responding in a timely fashion. Nothing to worry about I think.

Sorry for you to Rog , just watched the replay and noticed you did chuck the anchors out  much earler than the previous lap which caught me by suprise  , you had some rotten luck earlier on with the ping pong game which i managed to avoid and which put me on your tail , I chased you all the way from lap 8 on and though you were able to pull out a gap  I began closing on you nearer to the end  and wondered if you might have had some car damage a problem , then when I closed up in the last 3 or 4 laps you were warping like a good un . My concentration was  focused on trying not to get to close and making warp contact  yet staying close enough to benefit from any mistake you might have made , in the heat of this I didnt realise we were on the final lap and I didnt notice either that the lead cars had dropped out making it a fight for 3rd rather than 5th place .
I am sending a report in and we can let the mods decide who gets the champagne , thanks anyway for a very good race , I think you really earned the podium more than me and whatever the reason or wich way you look at it , i did take you off  so i think its fair to let the mods have the final say .

Hi PaulV
Don't worry mate your spin was the least of my problems. Not watched the replay yet but had a bit of a do at tarzan on lap 2 then after passing carnage on nearly every corner found myself in 8th with 6th and 7th in site. then two spins in front of me with nowhere to go and then rammed in the rear at least twice but still managed to keep 8th, next, screen decided to give me a warning it was switching off in 10 seconds and promptly did so!!!No idea where I was until switched screen back on and found myself sideways in middle of track, if this caused anyone problems my sincerest apologies
Although for me it seemed a debacle it was the most enjoyable race so far...no shift-r and  fairly respectable lap times.

Great respect to the podium, you guys really fly

Cheers
Boggy

Slidevoort, as I've affectionately named it over the years, was very kind to me for this race.

During practice, I was unable to get into the 1m30's, but knew from our visit last season, that I should be able to find that sort of time. Though was able to run comfortably in the 1m31's

Qualifying: Was pleased to get a P7 or P8, and it the 1m30's, though never looked like getting anywhere near the 1m29's, or even 1m28's, so well done to Pole, and anyone in the sub 1m30's. Great stuff.

Race: The opening corners went very well, and I found myself in P8 once the dust had settled. It was then a case of running steady and safe. I do try to drive like I don't want to 'virtually' hurt myself, or the car, and despite encountering a couple of spinners along the way, the GPL marshals as ever did a great job with the Yellow Flags, and I was able to react to any incidents ahead. Shame to see that my best lap yesterday was 2/10ths slower than last season, but sometimes circumstances in the race can dictate how hard you need to push at any given time to achieve a result.

The final P2 was a bit flattering really, as it relied on the misfortune of others (Giovanni's DC etc.).  The final 2 laps did seem a bit 'laggy', and I feared I was going to DC, but made it to the flag ok.

Well done all, see you at Oulton Park

I tried to stay tight and cautious while i was chasing but i couldn't predict where you were going to be. You went into a slide and came back and i was too close to react. My apologies :(

No worries Andy. At the time I was proper fuming but having watched the replay I can't honestly fault you. You had better pace and would inevitable have passed me later on. It was good racing for a while and the hit was so small yet it caused my car to go skyward for no apparent reason. I tried to quit out but all I was getting was a TV snowstorm effect. I'll never ever use reset as that IMO is just plain woosey.

Ah, wonderful GPL collision detection.

That's because you're upside down. If you go to F10 view, it will be clear.

You're welcome to your opinion, but no one will look down on you if you choose to reset (especially in a situation like that: no real fault on either driver's side, just a complete overreaction from the collision and physics models which were written with much less capable computers than we have now in mind).

Lol Tony. It is fine when a) GPL has been plain unfair (tiny tap and you are orbiting the moon)
or b) you have spent the week practising and somebody takes you out early.

It just isn't as polished as GTL's put stops (which I find hard to master...)

BTW Boys - try the GTL series if you get a chance. It is great fun.

I for one would love to get involved.

I always like GTL in the early days but Im not sure whats needed to upgrade the original disk and stuff I have.

dont you need some kind of digital copy ??

not too bothered about adding any mods or whatever to get my install up and running but to be honest not really sure where to look for help and guidance.

would love to have a blast in some of the cars and great tracks they have.

Paul V.

p.s. hasnt the "power & glory" mod got something to do with, or is based on GTL ????

I always like GTL in the early days but Im not sure whats needed to upgrade the original disk and stuff I have.

dont you need some kind of digital copy ??

not too bothered about adding any mods or whatever to get my install up and running but to be honest not really sure where to look for help and guidance.

would love to have a blast in some of the cars and great tracks they have.

Paul V.

p.s. hasnt the "power & glory" mod got something to do with, or is based on GTL ????

I'm happy to assist anyone who wants to try GTL out.

However let me give this word of EXTREME CAUTION!

If you have the original GTL CD disk and Windows 7 upwards DO NOT ATTEMPT TO INSTALL ON YOUR PC. It will give you immense grief and it could even ruin your Windows install!

This is due to the old Starforce protection that came with GTL being incompatible with Windows 7 upwards.

Best 1st step would be to download from Steam (or pm Badblood to see if he still has the GTL I gave him). Both have the latest version of GTL, without Starforce, and will install hassle free on your Windows 7 upwards PC.

Power & Glory is an historic racing mod based on GTR2 (required). Originally you needed a GTL disk as part of the P&G install procedure but the latest release (3.0) does not require this.

Hope this helps.

OOPS. Sorry Tony. I had completely forgotten to send it back. My bad. I'll dig it out...

Sorry.

On the subject of alternative racing sims, I have been toying around with Nascar 2003 this week, entertaining enough in its own right I guess but there is a GTP mod simulating late 80s/early 90s Le Mans prototypes.. its huge fun but the only online community is based in the USA racing at 9pm EST... :(
I did try GTR2 for a while but didn't really get on with it too well although I can't really explain why.
I also had a dodgy copy of rFactor and loved that to bits..... the online Renault Clio races were some of the best and closest I have been in....  same bunch of lads every saturday night, identical cars, default setups only!

I must admit some of the screenshots and videos I've seen of project cars is getting me a bit giddy.

Are they really Hristo? just pretty graphics then. The physics model is what makes gpl special, it would have to be a pretty good sim to topple our beloved legends. :)

Well, I've not tried it myself, but a few friends have and that's their verdict. It's still in development though, so we'll see what direction it goes to.
