I made a Crystal Palace addon which stops the track being drawn, uncomfortably close to your arrival.  Works with or without other addons.  Some members may not have tried using this : http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=209

It's a great little track, though F1's were considered too dangerous to race there, even in the '60's!  We shall see who is brave enough. :D

Do the same rules apply as last year?

Must use a different car for each race in this series??

It is a great track.. love it. used to be taken there in the late sixties/early seventies by my brother.  I remember too when getting to and from track they had concrete dinosaurs dotted around the park.

either that or my big brother was putting LSD into the flask of Tea Mum had made us !!!

I will love this one.. can you get out of second gear in a '67 Grand Prix car here ?????

A lot of drivers don't know the history of the Crystal Palace.  It was built in the 1850's for the Great Exhibition of London.  Because it had so much glass, privacy was a problem for the Royal family, and they soon moved into Buckingham Palace.  A couple of drivers found it empty in the 1920's, and burnt it down to make way for a new race track. The fire could be seen for over a hundred miles.  The concrete Dinosaurs were left behind to scare anyone who didn't like the idea, and can still be seen there today.  The tracks sad closure may have been due to their age.

So what you're saying is that the dinosaurs went extinct because they tried to get out of second gear at Crystal Palace?  ::)

No, actually the concrete retainers were becoming too costly, and safety was said to be prehistoric.  Then there was the noise . . .

What was that you said !

I said, age was a probable factor - also the 'noise', which sounded great to my ears!  This varied between shrieks and various growls, depending on what was loose on the track.  Sadly, it was claimed such things could stand in the way of progress.  There was a move to kill off Motor Sport completely, during the fossil fuel crisis. So the London track closed, and almost all are now silenced. :(

I can still see Jochen Rindt sliding around in his f2 Brabham showing the all the established drivers how it should really be done .

A really great track and a sad loss to British Motorsport .

Seems the next generation are all destined to play cricket or tennis or (god forbid) golf or some other inoccuous bat and ball game whichever is allowed , of coarse it will have to be on special none slip rubberised surface , just as long as no one can get hurt or disturb the mighty sound of London's Traffic  ???

Title: Re: 2013 Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy
Post by: maddog on March 30, 2013, 12:14:19 PM +0000
Rindt was an F2 master - he could fling their tails with the best of them.  Took him longer to learn how to finesse an F1.  I remember a young Derek Bell at the Palace, and James Hunt being run off the road exiting the last corner of the last lap, in an F3 race.  There was no run off area, and only small parts of his car crossed the line.

I visited the track a couple of years back, and it's mostly gone.  The front straight has been buried and grassed over, so not even the bare bones show. An International Athletics stadium had expanded alongside the back straight - now a parking area.

Times change, but our computers reassemble the remains.  Coming soon to a monitor near you - Crystal Palace . . . as visited by Royalty!  :euro:

Decent turn out. Thanks Guys. Engine blew half way round but I managed to trundle round far enough to steal Cookie's place but couldn't quite coast past Art.

Enjoyed it even though I was the tortoise to your hares.

Good chase with Art in the early goings, got past him twice but messed up last chicane both times, damaged engine the second time so bah all she wrote. Fun til then, thx all.

Post by: Artiglietti on March 31, 2013, 10:30:47 PM +0100
Well, that was some racing. Er, for the first half of the race...Had a great battle with Dean for the lead, he was clearly faster but I guess the power of the Honda prevented him from passing me on the straights. Some good battling and some very close calls.. :o Well, actually he did manage to pass,  twice, and twice he went off at the last fast chicane immediately after, the last one I suppose was fatal. Bad luck Dean, we'll resume at Crystal Palace.. ;D

Then of course I was left alone, as everyone else seemed to be quite a bit slower. And thats when the dreaded 'micro-napping syndrome of the lonely gpler' stroke...Made a mistake wich left Axel by, no worries though, he duly obliged in exchange a few laps later  ;D. At that point I was cruising toward an easy win in the last few laps, and again fell asleep at the wheel at the same corner which claimed Dean earlier on. Business as usual, the Artiglietti Pantomime all over again  ;D ;D Parked my wreckage on the fence and left it there missing some wheels...

Grats to the winner (Dave I suppose, as he was the one immediately following me), podium and finishers.

Very happy to have taken part to this once again, and glad to see Joe's memory keeps being honored within the means of UKGPL. We do miss you JS.

Thank you for the racing, and a late Happy Easter to all the racers and Joe's family. See you at the next one guys.

Managed to bring the car home in once piece despite 4 or 5 excursions onto the grass.  My fastest lap was a decent pace but I wasn't consistent enough to keep the pack in sight.  I too suffered the "lonely GPLer loss of concentration" but that was because I was off the back, not way out in front LOL.

Some good clean racing to honor Joe's memory.  RIP Joe.

It was a last minute decision to join in this race. I qualified 9th and started the 2nd lap 11th, keeping out of trouble. With about 9 laps to go I passed Andreas when he had a little wobble for 3rd which then became 2nd when Art went off. Dave Rainier was just a few seconds ahead.
On the penultimate lap I had a good run onto the straight and passed Dave, but he held on around the outside of the hairpin and got back ahead. On the last lap I wasn't close enough before the hairpin, but out of the hairpin I had the tow to get alongside into the esses and the inside line to be ahead for the last 2 corners and the finish.
A lot of people had problems and some big names weren't here, but I really didn't expect to be anywhere near the front. It was a race of attrition rather than a fast charge to the finish.
So I had a very enjoyable watch of my replay until 3 corners to go on the last lap when I go up the inside to pass Dave. Well I thought it was clean, I didn't feel a touch and my car doesn't wobble on my replay, but Dave gets thrown to the outside grassy bank as our cars are close. I didn't know until I saw the replay that the pass was contested. Sorry Dave, I really didn't want to win like that.

It hardly seems a year since we made our small contribution to the memory of Joe Shaw in our first running of this mini series, but here we are again and the competition is sure to be close in these 67 beasts.
Grats to Andy, Dave and Andreas for getting to the podium, it looks like there were a few retirements...myself included.

It was a good grid in memory of Joe. Maybe some of the 100% alien DNA was not represented but there were some very respectable lap times being posted in quali with Art showing some serious commitment in the Waza.

I had selected the Brab as it was a car I have not used much over the years and expected it to be slower on the straight but maybe better in the corners? a few racing laps would give me the answer.
I was therefore a little surprised to post a pole position on race fuel, but maybe not so surprised that Art just pipped me in the last few minutes. Nice one Art

My experience of the Waza suggested that unless Art nailed it just right  he might be vulnerable off the line and GPL had seen fit to give me 2nd spot and the inside line for T1...in a Brabham  ::)
It was better than I expected and I easily got alongside Art to claim the inside line and led towards T2. By the time I got onto the straight and took a good long look in my mirrors, and at prib, I already had a gap back to the Honda.

Hairpin next, and so easy to overshoot on cold tyres, or brake too early and find yourself swamped by the pack with inevitable results. That was to be the scariest part of my race because even though I just about got the hairpin spot on on cold tyres and heavy fuel to emerge with a slightly increased lead...( the disco gremlins had apparently taken a holiday over Easter and their cousins the broken camshaft brothers were house sitting in their place and full of enthusiasm) my race was to end on the run towards the Esses when a bang and sudden silence heralded the demise of the Repco whizzy bits............................Rats!!!!
I had not overreved the Brab, and I cannot remember ever breaking a Repco engine before, so I guess GPL and the gremlins decided it was time?? :-\

Still performing open heart surgery on my PC, with the help of a blowlamp and a percussion drill, in the hope that I can evict the disco gremlins permanently. So I am hoping to be at Crystal Palace, which I suspect will be VERY interesting in the 67's and a suitable challenge for round 2 of the Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy.
Let's make it a good one guys.

The race was short and sweet for me but I'm glad I made the effort. Big improvement in my PB for the BRM in qualifying so I was well chuffed. Just wish I had tweaked the gears a bit for the race to avoid the inevitable engine failure with my qualy setup. Grats to the podium of Andy, Dave and Andreas and everyone who turned up.

We miss you Joe.

Well, I have tried out the Palace and I can get round in under a minute - which is a BIG improvement from last time I was there. I'll see how it goes but I could be a danger to shipping out there and in practice I seem to spend most of the time facing backwards. T1 is a nightmare... how the hell anyone goes round in less than 55 secs I do not know...

Title: Re: 2013 Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy
Post by: maddog on April 02, 2013, 05:04:47 PM +0100
Under 55 seconds requires you get out of 2nd gear.  This is a place where a slow driver can't really get out of the way.  There could be tears if it's destined to be an open race, with no resets. :o  And no practice server as of now, to help iron out the kinks with.

My best time in Crystal Palace is 52,8 sec.
And I am far to be an alien !
I'm sure Hristo, Tristan or Attilio should be able to run under 51 sec, here.

I was a bit worried about getting in the way. 4 seconds off the pace and quite pleased with myself... until Hristo took another two seconds off. Started off last with Bob just ahead and stayed with him for the first lap. Very cautious about rear ending anyone and then as I accelerated away from T1... BANG! Famous Lotus reliability :( Didn't over-rev it.

Maybe Joe was looking down and thinking I shouldn't really be in this company!

RIP mate.

I never raced with Joe, but of course I followed his career on the forum. He seemed to be bright, incisive and very fast. My races were steady, safe and lucky. I'm really very surprised and humbled to end up on top.. Well done to all finishers of both races, especially Andreas who did all the laps available.

Well, short race for me, as I blew the engine while sitting pretty in fourth..Frankly, not the best track for the 67s I think, but then again if you pick a 6 geared car to go around it you cant really complain can you  ::)?

Grats to winner, podium and survivors. And, of course, to Andy, winner of the second JS Trophy.

R.I.P. Joe, we will be back next year.

Title: Re: 2013 Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy
Post by: Hristo Itchov on April 02, 2013, 11:03:30 PM +0100
I wanted to take the Lotus because Joe used to drive it and I guess he enjoyed it, but I haven't driven it in ages so I was struggling initially to get a feel for it and to set it up. Glad I managed a sub 50 right at the end, it was my aim.

The start went OK and I wanted for Ronnie and the rest to follow me closely and perhaps figure out where they lose time so it could be helpful to them, but while cruising down towards T1 2 laps into the race, I slid wide at very slow speed, about 30 km/h, clipped the wall and suddenly lost 2 wheels on the left hand side. Go figure.  ::)

Still, it was nice to throw the Loti around in Qualifying and I hope everyone else had a good race in Joe's memory.

It's not every day we get to perform at the Palace.

It was lap 3 or 4, when I attacked Cookie at Park Curve.  His car seemed to park at the apex, while my tyres were fully warmed.  So an apology owed for a blatant rear end shunt - it seemed to me you could've continued?  I dare say I deserved a lockup at North Tower, but received worse torture, as my car had been seriously bent.

My crabbing Lotus developed a mind of it's own, and attempted a scenic tour of London.  This made life interesting for Bob, who showed much restraint, while trying to overcome my wounded animal.  I finally put it out of it's misery against the sleepers, after numerous attempts.  The car seemed to have all the strength, that Hristo's was lacking - go figure?  But the knighthood will have to wait awhile longer. :-\

Really, really disappointed to miss this race for all sorts of reasons, not least of which was because it was for Joe.

Grats to Andy on a well deserved win and to all those who survived the less than forgiving barriers around this tight track. As Hristo discovered there is a cunningly disguised wheel removal tool on the outside of T1. I too discovered that in practice...there is another at the bottom of the incline T5 if anyone is interested.

I had subjected my PC to some serious internal examination and reconstruction over the weekend and had tested the results with a few laps practice around "the palace".
I was getting low 51 sec laps with 60 laps of fuel on board, so I thought I might be in with a chance of holding on to the magnificent trophy for yet another year if luck was with me.

I should have known better! when do I get lucky??? I discovered too late that I could not connect to the server either via IGOR or IP and was left frustrated and muttering in a darkened room as the minutes ticked down to the start.

At least there was a reasonable grid assembled and some good racing from what I read in the posts above.

Grats to Andy who will now be booking his Goodwood Revival tickets and getting his best suit ironed ready for the trophy presentation in September. Better clear a LARGE space in the trophy cabinet Andy!!

Congratulations to Andy on Winning the JSMT  :)

The choices of Snetterton and Crystal Palace as the race venues were really fitting.

We will be in residence at the Revival and will want to meet as many GPL'ers as possible again this year and of course present the JSMT to its worthy winner.

This year I will endeavour to let everyone know well ahead of time when and where we will make the presentation.

Congratulations again Andy. I look forwards to meeting you on the day.

I am intending to be there for the whole weekend and am about to book a campsite pitch as well over the coming weekend.

The Goodwood campsite allows for 4 people to share a pitch and you can have more than one tent on a pitch. It is a little more expensive than other sites in the area but once there you have no travelling costs or traffic probs.....and you can have a beer without any worries  ;D .
Is there anyone else who wants to share the cost of this pitch ( with electric hook-up so I have kettle, toaster and mini fridge NO! not a mini bar a mini fridge!!).

I will be arriving on Thursday afternoon and leaving on Monday morning, but if anyone needs an overnight stay we can work that out I'm sure.

Looking forward to meeting up with Malcolm and his family again and relinquishing custodianship ( reluctantly!) of the magnificent Joe Shaw Memorial Trophy to Andy Livingstone.

Maybe we should move this Goodwood thread to a new topic?

Edit... Phil has just claimed a share of the campsite that I have booked along with his son, so that leaves room for only one small tent and occupant if we can squeeze it in.
