UKGPL Season 24 Extra Trophy (69X)
Race 9 Schottenring

Welcome to the ninth round of the Extra Trophy for 69 Extra chassis. This time we are in Germany at the Schottenring. It is long, it is tough, I won't make it... what else is there to say?

The first lap will be fully moderated within the red zone. The red zone will extend to the exit of turn something (I haven't checked the map yet - oh GPL Track Database - wherefore art thou?) but is likely to be to the exit of the Schotten corners as shown in this image here (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/407/schottenrz.jpg/)

Please check the Season 24 pages for details (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=386&theme=6) regarding rules and the Extra Trophy (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=395&theme=6) pages in particular.

It is very important that drivers are FULLY familiar with the rules relating to Shift-R. ONLY ONE IS ALLOWED and a Shift-R MUST be followed by a Stop-and-Go or the driver will be excluded. Any driver taking multiple resets will be excluded.

We will race on ONE server for this race as turnouts in the HEAVY category have declined to the point where an additional server is not justified.

Be careful not to get too close to trees as they have bigger collision boxes than their visual size, else you risk chopping a wheel off.

It's long, but not difficult to learn, it's basically 3 main sections with similar kind of corners, and most of the corners can be seen in advance so you don't have to know them all by memory. In 69x I expect lap times well under the 5 minute mark.

Looks like a maximum of 3 heavies?  And I have already asked to join the Light Brigade at the rear. :scooter:

EDIT : Ok, so now I notice we are all destined to die from a single grid.  I may be slow at reading this, but at least I'm not an ill literate

I can't remember the last time I left a track, so annoyed with myself!  >:(

Happy enough to start behind, and not interfere with serious points scoring candidates, the cunning plan was to linger there, and pick up the pieces as the debris fell.  The one spanner, was Tristan just behind, who I planned to let through as soon as he seemed ready. It happened just past the red zone, lap 1.  I decided to go wide up the hill.  But it took about 1 second to realize, that's a bad idea on a cobblestone corner!  Bailed it, and bailed out - dangerous spot for a guest to park at.  It's one of those tracks where you need to know every corner, simply to survive!

Stayed to watch a master class by Hristo - he's quite good.  And a great scrap for forth between Andreas and Evil, which ended in tragedy.

All in all, I have to say, the skill level and survival shown at this death trap, are a lot better than I'd expected.  Ok, it seems 69x are easier to drive than Can-Ams - (update patch news here : https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=11568.0 ) but nonetheless, it seems we've a right bunch of showoffs, who've insisted on actually finishing, on one of GPL's toughest tracks.  I hate every smug one of you ! ;)

The freezes are annoying but look on the bright side - I got my second silver of the month!

...you're still thinking of the freezes, aren't you?

PS. Nice to see Nigel helping Blue Moose to a Heavy division lead...

I'm glad I didn't! Was just going on a very quick lap as the fuel went down, when I braked too late for that fast left down hill, before the houses, and spun off into something solid. Fortunately I had enough of a gap over Attilio and continued in 1st after my stop/go. A bit disappointed as I was looking forward to setting a better lap time on low fuel, but still quite an exhilarating drive around this track in these beasts!

Well not one of my favourite circuits, but last nights performance might be more to do with me, the car that I chose and the setup.

I selected the Mclaren and I don't know why, I also started with the setup I used at Daytona ( one can immediately see how similar the circuits are ::) ) and I have no rational explanation for that. Just to make the perfect combination I was actually feeling totallly knackered after a gruelling day in the workshop trying to sort out....wait for it..........................a new dummy ( but fully functional) pitwall enclosure for Mclaren's hospitality area.

The setup required a few tweaks and my new pit crew Anders Dehammer and Ben Dittofit claimed to have carried out the necessary adjustments.
The race started well enough although I was nowhere near the qually pace of Hristo,Art etc...stunning lap times boys  ;) But with cars testing the root structure of various trees I picked up a couple of places and was running behind Andreas  in 4th or 5th....which was OK.

I was not until I really started to push that the setup showed it's flaws. At 90% the car handled very sweetly and I could drive smoothly and felt confident that I could at least finish the race. But I think Anders had used his favourite tool a little too much, because as I explored the finer limits of the setup the car would oversteer through slow corners (and it took a lot of delicate footwork to prevent the tail getting ahead of itself), but in the fast sweeping corners it would develop massive understeer at the apex.
It was the understeer that caught me out and I too tested a tree :-\. A S/R and  SnG and I was a long way back but some steady driving got me back onto Andreas's tailpipes and I pressed hard for a few laps hoping for a mistake that did not come. His Matra was quicker out of the corners but I was later on the brakes until the dreaded understeer gremlin caught me again and I bounced off the fencing and back across the track to continue my woodcarving.

A great dice with Andreas which should have gone all the way to the flag.
Grats to Hristo and the podium....those times are almost scary, I need to do some serious practice on this track because I am certainly missing something....about 15 secs!!!!!
