Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Formula 2 Trophy - Snetterton - Jul 14
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on July 09, 2013, 10:32:34 PM +0100
THIS POST IS FOR THE LIGHT & HEAVY RACES

Welcome back for a third season of Formula 2 racing. The format is going to be very similar to last season with a split between Light Brigade & a Heavy Brigade. Depending on the number of registrations by the weekend we might run on one or two grids. It’s a free choice of chassis for the first 3 races for everyone. We kick off on British soil at Snetterton which is a 1967 F2 rank track. Snetterton is a former airfield with long flat straights & relatively quick corners including the brilliantly named “Bomb Hole”.

The Driver list is shown below & the Championship Table can be found here F2 Trophy  (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=405&theme=6).

A maximum of one reset is allowed per race & must be followed by a compulsory Stop & Go in the pit lane within two laps of the Reset. If you Reset on the last lap a 15 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.
In line with other divisions the races will be subject to full moderation in the red zone which will be to the exit of the hairpin. The Moderator may chose to investigate any other incident, in addition to reported incidents & red zone incidents.

Please note that for UKGPL has introduced a system of penalties within each series for drivers accumulating yellow cards – see here
Penalty Points (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring these penalties will receive a PM advising when a penalty has been applied & what race it should served.

Race List = IGOR

Shouldn't have been available for this one - I should be away on holiday :)
But,  as it turned out I was sent home relating to  :censored:  builders early tomorrow morning.   In which case,  I thought why not sneak back a little early.. just in case!   However,  I'm certainly hoping that I'll be away for the Tuesday event!

Unfortunately, the roads were against me on the trip back (although undoubtably worse for any unfortunates at the headends...) & I just about got in/online with a couple of mins to the off.  Just enough time to work on adding a splash of fuel but no time for a practice lap.

Once it all spread out, quite a lonely race.  Apart from that pesky PT chap who was not content with just getting by & disappearing up the road but kept hanging around to taunt me hehe!   Anyway,  thanks for playing Phil

Was somewhat surprised to see that we were all on 1 grid & that there were still a couple of slots available.  However,  I'd have been a little disappointed if already fully occupied.

But phew - another hot sticky night then!

Cheers all,
Dave.

Sorry to EVERYBODY... last minute hitch with the servers so BIG thanks to Cookie for hosting.

Few family issues and a major argument kicked off which meant I missed (and deleayed) the start. Found myself being lapped and then after I had got in the way of nearly everybody I managed to rear end Marco who was a bit slow through T1. Sorry mate. Then saw yellows and thought it was Bill who looke like he was heading into the bridge but found a chassis in the middle of the road :(

Whack. Gave up shortly afterwards. Ignominious.

If the family mayhem kicks off again I won't drive. Sorry again if I spoiled anybody's fun.

This was an eventful race. So sorry Natan for the touch in L1 I was to busy looking mirrors I guess and trying to get my gf s attention for her to stop watching movie online. I managed that on lap 5 or something. I was really glad to see you got away with it ok. My car was ok for driving fast alone but whan I had to glue the hairpin my 1 st was way to tall. I lost several spots after an almost fulstop in the hairpin afraid of cars coming up my side with greater speed down the following straight.after half race was done I had a nice dice with FP and on last lap I tried to pass Dean O twice. First time on SF line I was clear but still afraid of him breaking later so I glued inside. behind him again towards t2. Then I found some space on the inside down the straight ,but again I braked earlier and our backwheels touched . we both went wide and FP passed us. I ended 3 rd behind FP and all in all happy with my podium. I ll try to have Evil look at what happened there on last lap.

I hope not - as that was hard work!
They may have been attending a disco,  but they mostly arrived at different times.  Therefore surely avoiding the 'no large groups' at one situation...?

Although, having said that - would have been good to have had a shot at not starting from last place. I do however freely admit that I did benefit rather well from all retirements.  Probably unlikely to happen next time out :)

Cheers,
Dave.

Disco'd.  My latency bar was high most of the race.  Then my 'Q' bar started to skyrocket...

My latency bar was also uncomfortably high for the first half of the race. If the Q bar is the one on the right that was also going up and down for the first few laps of the race (not qually) but settled down more quickly than the latency.

Not sure why others had probs with the server as from where I was watching proceedings everything looked fine  ::). The only glitch in my race was when I dozed off approaching the Bomb Hole and totally missed my braking point........I have to report that the Lola BMW works well off road too!! as I straight lined the Esses and rejoined the circuit 200 mtrs ahead :o

As usual for me, I tried qually on race fuel and was reasonably happy with about 3rd on the grid, but I was a little concerned that there were several quick guys in Matras hogging the front row. they might cause me a problem if I had to try and pass them with their straight line speed.  So, just to see how much difference 10 galls of fuel makes I went out with just enough for 4 flying laps and the same setup. The answer was ..."about 1.5 secs"   it transpired, and I sneaked an unexpected pole position.

The start went well, but I knew that I would be a simple target for the Matras and the slipstream on the straight. Sure enough one of those green things cruised past ( I was too busy peddling as fast as I could to see who was driving it!!). I wondered if maybe I could return the pass on the next lap if I stayed close enough, but those Matras are dammed quick in a straight line  :-\ and even with the draft I could only get alongside as we approached the braking point. I had the wide line and went deep into the braking zone  and the Matra tried to match me metre for metre......but I think the inside line scuppered his chances of making the tight corner and I had to allow him to run on until I could turn behind him and claim 1st spot again.
Was there an incident at the hairpin? because I quickly found myself with a nice gap which I steadily stretched out until I had a comfortable margin. Then, I assume that Ronnie and Natan had their disco because suddenly the gap was 12 secs and I was all alone.

I resisted the urge to go for a PB as the race reached the final laps and only gave it the banzai beans on the "slowing down" lap. I think I recorded a 1:26.3 as I cruised around to the pits, but still have to see if I managed to save the replay of that lap.

Grats to Fulvio and Tom for their podium places and bad luck to those who suffered a disco, that is always sooo frustrating! Also I should thank Phil and Dave who allowed me a clear pass when I lapped them and temporarily halted their own battle for a few corners. ;)

Only the first race of a series so plenty of opportunity to squander my good start.  ::)

I was hoping my bad luck so far this season would change after getting punted off in Historics while second, spinning backmarker in Race 1 Friday Trophy assisting my demotion form the race lead and a stationary/slow starting car ahead of me for start of Race 2 Friday Trophy.

Not a chance. People exiting the pits both during qualifying and in the race (what was going on then?) conspired to allow Clive a gap from lap 2 onwards. Having got my act together I was then discoed for good measure. For the record this track was a problem with the F2's a season or two ago when over half the field was discoed if I remember correctly in a UKGPL fun race.

Regardless, grats to the podium.

Sorry about the number of discos - it was about one third & definitely less than 50% so the result will stand & no re-run. I was not aware that we had connection issues with this track but Snetterton is not likely to appear on the Formula 2 schedule for somw time as I really struggle with races here. Every third lap or so in quallifying I lost the back end in braking into the hairpin so I ended up trundling around at the back braking early eveywhere. Have now adjusted the brake balance & the car handling is much better.
As there were no heavy entrants on the server by 9pm Paul & I took the decision to run one grid. Hopefully the turnout will improve next race - Monaco is not a good place for mixed ability drivers  I am planning to run 2 grids.

A rather interesting race for me ,qualy with race fuel, but after a few laps i found my self in P3 behind Cookie,he was blinking so badly i really had a tuff time deciding when to try a move ,i did try a couple times only too have him appear suddenly very close to me ,so i sat back and waited, lucky for me he went off in T1 so i was free to go after Evil , i thought i was closing the gap ,well only just.

I started with fuel +1 ,sadly 3 laps from the end the pressure began to drop ,so i went in ,which left time for King to catch me up ,only choice i had was try to stay in front of him and in the right hand turn we touched ,lost 2 positions ,i don't know if i got unstable under braking or what but i was surprised King took the inside ,i'm sure he was faster than i at this point ,cold tires, heavy fuel etc.

Fun stuff

Sorry Dean, but it must be vice versa, we were racing on my server and it must have been you who was warping   :o
I was aware that you could be faster and never intended to block you!

You'd have obviously got past sooner or later,  but I was of course hoping to follow in your dust & slingshot past Phil  :)   Alas, did not work out as hoped.   Although we did end up swapping places a few times during the event.  Luckily, I think Phil forgot how to count at the end & I just managed to squeeze ahead in the closing stages.

Although of course,  it all amounts to no difference due to the 2x grids - but that race was quite enjoyable. Thanks Phil!

Cheers,
Dave.
