Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Novices and Intermediates Trophy (65) - Rouen - Jul 16
Post by: BadBlood on July 12, 2013, 12:06:32 AM +0100
Season 25 Novices and Intermediates Trophy - Round 1 - Rouen

NB. There is ONE grid for both the Novices and the Intermediates

The Novices and Intermediate Trophies will share a grid until further notice. We start in France and travel to the North West and Rouen-Les-Essarts.  In the 1950s and 60s this track was widely regarded as one of the finest in Europe. The French Grand Prix was first held at Rouen-Les-Essarts in 1952 before the track was lengthened and  the Grand Prix held there again in 1957, 1962, 1964 and 1968.  It is the lengthened circuit that we will be racing on tonight.  The 1962 race was won by Dan Gurney, his first Formula 1 victory and the one and only win for Porsche.  The 1964 race was again won by Dan Gurney this time driving a Brabham-Climax.  The final grand prix in 1968 was won by Jacky Ickx but it will always be remembered for the fatal accident involving Jo Schlesser.

Race List = IGOR

65 Patch: The 2.02 Release of the 65mod can and should be used. You need a working installation of the 65 mod to install the 2.02 Update. All the 65 Mod files can be found here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Mods/1965)

Driver lists can be found on the Novice (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=406) and Intermediate (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=407) championship standings pages.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Intermediate drivers are limited to ONE reset. Novices have unlimited resets but EACH Shift-R MUST be followed within TWO laps by a Stop 'n' Go.

All drivers have a free choice of car.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start line to the exit of the hairpin at Nouveau Monde. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

Made a mistake at the hairpin.
Was rear ended by Boggy.
Forget to do a shift-R  ::)

BT7 is fun to drive but too slow on the long straight.

Sorry Rainier but had nowhere to go always a problem at the hairpin. Had to drive onto the grass a few times when I think Paul had a coming together with Tony. Trying to race against Novices on the same track as  Inters to me is wrong.

Cheers

I did the same to someone at this place. Sorry for that. Then next lap i made a mistake there and someone rear ended me too :D Then i managed to gain 2 positions but at the same place i stepped on the grass and lost one position. From then we had a great chase. Sorry for not knowing your names. I entered abit late and had problem with the chat. After 30 minutes of driving everything on the track dissapeared and asked me if i want to recconect :D I hope next time i'll have a full race.

Ivan

I think it might have been me that 'rear-ended' you...except that I didn't! You lost control coming down to the hairpin, and got bounced back off the polos from the outside of the track right to the inside. It wasn't a smooth bounce, it was a bit warpy... I saw you crashing, and took the tightest line I could round the hairpin, but you went into the side of me. All very unfortunate....

also, what happened to you off the grid - did you over-rev and lose traction? I drove past you like you hadn't seen the flag!! Shame when you managed a great pole time...

Arf

Sorry to Tony... you surprised me on the kink down to Nouveau Monde - I was trying to be cautious and safe :( and then  when we crashed I wasn't even passing you. I was placing the car for a pass up the straight but there was a collision between the 'virtual' cars - you can't get too close so my error. Sorry mate.

Apart from that had fun chasing Al but stuffed it into the polos just as I caught him. Car got very twitchy under braking when the fuel burnt off. Pity really.

If we are only 4 novices and 5 intermediates, I think it should be better to mix the 2 grids and to have only one championship...
Intermediates would only drive Cooper or BT7 for example.

It was me who you reared ended, I saw in my reply that you tried to avoid me but there was too much momentum and I ended up on the polo's :(

That sounds like a good idea if these numbers stay the same.

What is the next race? As the Novices and Inters say different things?

Next race is Adelaide. I'll tidy that up. Sorry.

We will stick with two championships but one grid. There are over twenty registrations so the low turnout was a bit disappointing. Maybe everybody was at a barbeque. Maybe we should just have fun races in the summer months. I had tried to fit two seasons in per year but we might be better running three seasons every two years. Give everyone a better chance to recharge the batteries.

I wouldn't change a thing based on the turnout for one race. If things don't improve over a season, then perhaps a rethink would be best.

Hi
Yes hopefully a better turnout next race. I could not get to grips with the ferrari and could not find a decent setup at all, may have to return to the trusty Brabham for next race, see you all (and hopefully a lot more) in Oz

To be clear, Season 25 will continue as is but we might re-jig for Season 26. I think more will turn up later in the season.

I've always had some good racing at this circuit and last night was no exception. Felt that I had a really good flow and was driving quite smoothly throughout most of the circuit. The parts that caught me out occasionaly were the approach braking to Nouveau Monde and Scierie and the correct speed to take the turn two left hander.
Didn't realise our cars made contact at Nouveau Monde Paul but my line into the hairpin was never consistent so you must have been unlucky. Mind you it's a risky place to try a pass. Apart from our second coming together the race was fairly uneventfull. The best part was the last ten laps when I was slowly reeling in Boggy. Eventual passed him after he had a huge off and then with about three laps to go I slid off onto grass and as I was rejoining he whizzed pass. Later I caught him and took the place and he must of had another accident as he disappeared completely.
Looking forward to the next one now.

PS Boggy, you were lagging quite a bit which made close racing with you a bit scary as you would disappear and then appear again a second later.

I did some practice for this one and always had trouble stopping at the end of the straight- the car was eager to spin around. My race was ok with only a couple of minor offs but losing time at the end of the straight trying not to bin it. I put a pass on Billy into turn 1 who I saw go on the grass- I was careful to not touch him and hope that his off was more over exuberance than contact. Arf was too fast to catch and drove well for the win. Well done all see you next time.

With the GTL digital download now only £2.49 from Steam why not give it a go?

Our next race is this Monday, at this track, and racing some great cars from the 1950's including D Type Jag's, Ferrari Testarossa's and Aston Martin DBR1's

Grats to the Podiums

Well i had my first race in the 65 lotus and was great fun, my set up not quite on and for fear of blowing engine set the gearing to long, but that is no excuse for not being very competitive, you 2.06/2.07 guys were way faster than me and no way could i reach those times, i think i need to be demoted.
Al what happened to you coming down to Scierie it looked like you was going to fly past me, then you was no were to be seen?
Will the replays be uped some time?

Al what happened to you coming down to Scierie it looked like you was going to fly past me, then you was no were to be seen?

Just another case of me being really rusty with online racing.

On the straight, during the curve I was  focusing more on your car than my own, I ended up running wide and hitting a tree sideways, which didn't end well for me as you can imagine.

I have always liked this track but it's another one where I've never done well at and this race was no exception. I was chipping away in qualifying but couldn't hope to get a 2:05 that was needed to be truly competitive. I was still happy and relieved to be 3rd on the grid.

I got a OK start, I bogged down a little but it was OK, and much better than Ivan who really bogged down. I got past his on the run to the first corner, and was behind Arf. I was doing pretty well at this stage, I was getting everything upto temp, I was keeping Arf just about in sight and I was keeping Ivan behind me, and all 3 of us where pulling away from everyone else.

After a few laps Ivan picked up his pace and I was under quite alot of pressure from him, he got a good run on me on the main straight but I was brave on the brakes and just managed to shut the door, but it couldn't last. Ivan tapped me at the hairpin, on my reply he was a little hot and tried to abort but just tapped me and I span and got caught on one of teh polo's. I had to wait for an age before there was a space to Shift+R into and I think I ended up about 10th.

I was closing in on Rog, but had to take my stop and go, after that Rog and the rest of the field where all quite a bit up the road, and I was in a huge gap with no other drivers around me. I started to push a little to try to catch up and after about 10 laps or so I started to see a car just ahead of me. I got into his slip stream and as I said above I'm a little rusty and made a silly mistake. I needed another Shift+R and a stop and go. By this time I was miles behind the group.

I knew that my chances of catching anyone was now zero, and Badblood was getting close behind, so I just try to calm myself down a little and cruise home. That was working great until I came up to lap a couple of other drivers. They behaved brilliantly and kept to there side of the road, but the problem is that I'm a idiot and got distracted again, I managed to spin a couple of times trying to lap these guys but luckily didn't need another Shift&R. I noticed that Badblood was really close now so I went for a couple of fast laps. That worked great and it was race end before I knew it.

Overall I'm pleased to be back racing, but a little disappointed with my performance, next race I hope to be a little more stable.

I wasn't really trying to overtake there but I thought you had pulled wide, the second one is worth looking at in an overhead view. That needs new camera files which I can send you if you are interested.... I was disappointed that I punted you off track as I was actually trying to be cautious but reasonably agressive at the same time. It is quite a good illustration of the limitations of the GPL collision model.

PS Boggy, you were lagging quite a bit which made close racing with you a bit scary as you would disappear and then appear again a second later.
Yes it was scary!

There isn't much you can do really. It is the quality of the connection that is the biggest factor and that is down to your ISP.

I use some software called GameFire before I race online. it turns of all the non-essential stuff that's running in the background. I also turn off my Internet Security but run a scan after I turn it back on after the race.
