Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Formula 2 Trophy - Edmonton - Aug 11
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on August 07, 2013, 10:37:22 PM +0100
THIS POST IS FOR THE LIGHT & HEAVY RACES

Round 3 of the F2 season is off to Canada. Edmonton, also known as Speedway Park opened a Can Am track in 1968. With the first 4 races being won by ’67 F1 world champion Denny Hulme.

As attendances have been down, especially in the Heavy Division the plan is to run on one track. If you are a Heavy driver who has registered but not driven this season it would help if you could post your intention to participate. Unlike Monaco passing shouldn’t be a big problem. The Driver list is shown below & the Championship Table can be found here F2 Trophy  (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=405&theme=6).  There is a free choice of chassis for this race.

A maximum of one reset is allowed per race & must be followed by a compulsory Stop & Go in the pit lane within two laps of the Reset. If you Reset on the last lap a 15 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.

In line with other divisions the races will be subject to full moderation in the red zone which will be to the exit of the Smalian Chicane. The Moderator may chose to investigate any other incident, in addition to reported incidents & red zone incidents.

Please note that for UKGPL has introduced a system of penalties within each series for drivers accumulating yellow cards – see here
Penalty Points (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring these penalties will receive a PM advising when a penalty has been applied & what race it should served.

Just in case, T7 server is set for 25 laps Long race and listening on Igor in Console session with OpenGL_V2.
Probably I won't be racing cause I'll be out of town tomorrow.
Ciao

Thanks Fulvio.
Will probably run one grid - but good to have another option if we get a higher turn out.

How far back down the grid do you need to be able to see the flag at the start?

Screen freeze with 4 laps to go :(.

Sorry about the shunt Arf.  For some reason my car handled very strangely through the chicane on that lap (for a while I thought I'd got a puncture from running wide and hitting the conrete wall on the previous corner) and I was all over the place for the left hander.  Not sure what happened (lost my replay because of screen freeze) but I suspect I was in the middle of the track and you had nowhere to go :(

Clearly some bad luck for some people tonight while I obviously got some good fortune. Really tough on you Clive being so close but no fuel to hold on. Also Sam seemed to disappear and Dean spun just at the right time for me. Early on I was spinning far too often myself so apologies to all who got caught up in any of my troubles.

Grats to Clive and Dean and everyone else. Unlike some I sort of like this track. See you all at the next one after the hols.

Frustrating but fun race. Unlucky (again) to be taken out by Phil (I think) as he lost it on a corner about 2/3 into the race (were your tyres overheating? You appeared to lose control for a few laps, then regain it, only to go erratic again). After that I just seemed to lose it mentally and crashed/span every 2/3 laps after that.....hey ho

Did anyone else experience terrible warp and lag in qually and most of the race? It only calmed down for me in the last 10 laps or so, and caused me lots of problems, inc losing control on L1 T1

WD to all finishers

Arf

I too had a screen freeze Phil  :(. Was looking good for 2nd place as well. Clive was in another league and I simply had no answer.

This is the second time I've had a screen freeze at this circuit. Seems my computer and Edmonton don't get along.

No lag for me, mind you the server is 10 yards away in the loft...

Not sure what happened to T7 but UKGPL3 had to step in at the last minute. Apologies for the delay but it was unavoidable.

As for the race, first lap was awesome. After that the wheels came off. Literally :D

Really need to practice....

I was 6 on the grid, 4 after two turns ...and 15 after three turns when my engine exploded !
I made a Stop and Go, and a lonely race finishing 6th close to Dave Curtis Lola.

I blame the weekend of alcohol and lack of sleep!!

I arrived home early evening, sat in the armchair and promptly fell asleep for about an hour, waking just in time to have a quick bite of food and a long drink ( non-alcoholic!!).
almost 9:00pm .

So I fired up my magic lantern and discovered ...no server???  A visit to the chatroom found all the usual suspects milling around looking for a spare server, which Paul produced from his top hat along with a rabbit and a bunch of flowers.  ;)

Which car??? well I used the Brab last time so why not???  The gearing was too low and I spent several trips out of the pits testing different ratios until I was reasonably comfortable. Then I looked at what times were being set and saw that Ronnie was really on a mission!!! :o.
I was getting within 1-2 secs on ( what I thought would be) race fuel but Natan and Samb were threatening the front places too and I did not fancy being too far back if Rocket Ronnie was going to take off into the distance when the race started.

I reduced the fuel load by 50% and changed a few lines through corners and suddenly I was very close to Ronnies time, but each time I lit up the first sector and was on course to take pole... I caught traffic  :-\ at just the wrong point and lost time. No-one's fault that is how the cookie crumbles in qually. But I squeezed over the S/F line just before the end of Q and got a clean lap right at the end which took pole and put me in the place that Ronnie did not want where you cannot see the flag!!!! Doh!!!!  ::)

I had to refuel, get myself set to look right at the flagman and be ready to drop the clutch and switch to straight ahead view ... last night was not a good night for such complicated multi-tasking!! and I was a little slow getting away.
The rocketman lived up to his name and amazed me as he swept past into the first left hander and again maintained that speed through the right hander towards the first real right hander...how is he so quick I thought???? A little less impressive but more re-assuring was his slide off the circuit under braking  ;) .

I regained the lead with the ever threatening Samb on my gearbox, which would mean that I would be an easy target once we reached the S/F straight at the end of the lap. So some banzai driving on cold tyres and heavy fuel was required. I did just enough to gain a safe gap at the end of the lap.
From then on I just manged to ease away from Samb and Natan ( and I think I saw Dean flash up on prib?).
Everything was working fine and I was slowly stretching the cushion back to Samb until I glanced at the fuel level at half distance  :o :o

At this rate I was going to be 2 laps short of fuel!! 2 options.........a) make a Shift/R and SnG, but I did not have a big enough cushion to get out in the lead again. or b) short shift and drop the pace to squeeze out the fuel???, but 2 laps extra??? could it be done.

I dropped my pace by about 2 secs a lap and stayed 1 gear higher through almost every corner. Every few laps I did the mental maths and it was getting close...very close!!!! With 5 laps to go the fuel pressure started to drop, with 3 laps to go I had less than 20psi and 0.5galls left.
Then Ronnie loomed onto prib and started hunting me down. More maths and at this speed I might just make the flag if the fuel holds out.........I start the last lap with 0.1 galls and 6psi and Ronnie closing fast but maybe not quite fast enough??
The engine was coughing and spluttering but we were still going...only the final chicane and corner and the short run to the flag..................but it all went quiet  Rats Ronnie swept past!!! Shift-R and a blast to the line ahead of Dean, but with the 15 sec penalty I will probably lose that.

You have to laugh Clive............don't you??

Your quite right about pole. I was well pleased when you nicked it. I had got two black flags in earlier practice races online and was more than happy to be sitting on the other side of the grid. I found Turn 1 tricky throughout the race. Not so much speed and breaking but the line taken on the approach. Bouncing off the wire fence here occurred more than once . Apologies to Phil in particular who had nowhere to go as I ended up in the middle of the track on one such excursion. Watching the replay I felt bad about recovering ahead of you Phil, but the chase was on and when I caught and passed Clive running on empty on the last lap it was probably the difference between 2nd or the win.

Commiserations again Clive

...Dean spun just at the right time for me...

Thought I'd have an easy-ish run to 3rd after the early carnage, but watching the gap back to you (once you'd got clear of DC) drop lap after lap, I knew it was just a matter of time.

...and a blast to the line ahead of Dean, but with the 15 sec penalty I will probably lose that.

Yup.

EvilClive (The evilf2) — last lap time penalty. — 15.000 seconds added

Shouldn't that elevate me to 2nd place?

Actually, I had the impression the penalty for missing a Stop & go, was 30 seconds under all circumstances?  I'm unconnected and unbiased in this, but would like some clarification, if a rule has changed.

Dean,
I will have a look how the time penalty is worked out.

Martin,
The time penalty was 30 secs in previous seasons - & may be so in other series. Having looked at the actual time for most pit stops 15 seconds seems rather more proportionate & 15 secs is what it says in the race post.

Correction to the moderation.
Evil's time penalty demotes him from 2nd to 3rd. The system didn't pick this up so I have docked Evil 1 place in the results - although no penalty points.
