Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Privateers Trophy (67) - Spa - Sep 8

Season 25 Privateers Trophy, Round 4, Spa

Welcome back to the Privateers. After our break we stay in Europe with a short move across the border to visit Spa Francorchamps in Belgium. Classic circuit and one of the fastest on the calendar. High speed and some tricky corners where scrubbing off too much will kill the lap times and scrubbing off too little will kill the driver!

The original triangular shaped course, which was designed in 1920 by Jules de Their and Henri Langlois Van Ophem, used public roads between the towns of Spa, Malmedy and Stavelot.  The course was extremly fast and was made even faster in 1939 with the introduction of the famous Eau Rouge section.  The circuit was completely revised and shortened for the 1981 Belgian Grand Prix but it is the faster 8.761 mile version of the track that we will use for this race.

The 8.761 mile version of the circuit was used between 1946 and 1970 and whilst corners like Eau Rouge, Burnenville and particularly Masta; presented the drivers with exceptional challenges the circuit was very dangerous and claimed the lives of many drivers.

A maximum of ONE reset is allowed per race & must be followed by a compulsory Stop & Go in the pit lane within two laps of the Reset. If you Reset on the last lap a 30 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to the exit of Masta. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Privateers (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=402&theme=6) standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Not great - took care at the start as I had a keen Mini behind me... but not for long. Thought I had the measure of Phil but a trip to the hedge sorted that... then Michael span in front of me and I was looking forward to a bit of a battle as he slowly closed me down but then I span under braking for the last hairpin. Not sure why as it was totally stable until then!

No more racing but I thought I would try and set a PB or two, unfortunately I got a context swith and had no sound and the flashing screen  >:(

Tried to exit but not suer where I was. Hope I didn't get in anyone's way.

Chat being down is a pain!

Assume the problem with Chat is general rather than just me?

Cookie & Andreas were in "Vettel" form & took off into the distance. I inherited P3 from Hendy about lap 3 & spent the next 12 laps watching Prib as he took time out of my lead. Going into the last lap we were close. I think a clean lap might have been good enough to hold on to the podium but I made a tiny mistake & Hendy nipped in front on the section between Stavelot & Blanchimont. Probably the right result at the end. Spent the extra tokens & really enjoyed the Eagle - back to the Brabham for the rest of the season!

From the dismal appearance (mine!) at the recent 'fun' event [no time for much of the qually session & disco after half a lap],  at the time I thought that I may as well taken the Honda instead of the Eagle,  as I could not even string a few corners together.

Well, this time out;  I looked at my previous best times round here.  Couldn't decide between Lotus/Eagle,  so took the Honda after all. I guess the extra fuel did not help too much,  but it seemed that there was forever cars lining me up for an overtake!

After the first lap or so, I was hoping I'd be within sight of the car in 3rd or 4th come the end;  but too many minor excursions & just too plain slow put an end to that.  It was all getting rather interesting in the last stages with Mr Turner,  but was probably never going to go my way anyway.  Still,  nice to dream eh?!

Good going Andreas & Billy.

Cheers all,
Dave.

Yes, there was no chat possible ::)

Driving like Vettel's grandpas  ;)
I made one 180° spin at Malmedy that made me loose my safety distance but made me wake up...

Spa is the track where I learned GPL driving with the wheel, so I know every inch ;)

The chat is DEFINITELY a problem with ShadowWorld. They seem to have disappeared somewhat abruptly. iGOR connected just fine using the chat server at efnet.xs4all.nl - maybe we will all just have to end up using that...

An unscheduled excursion up an embankment on L1 and the consequent need to get the car pointing in the right direction again left me about 30 seconds behind the main pack with a lonely race to look forward to. Until  the final few laps when PG and DC hove into view.
I wasn't gaining much on them until DC had a moment and I managed to get past but with him close behind. I was in the Lotus and DC in the Honda so it was a level playing field ;)
I managed to keep Dave at bay until L14 when after rounding the hairpin he used the ultimate weapon - the Invisibility Cloak - disappearing from view and then reappearing just ahead of me (captured on the server replay) but this seemed to unsettle the Honda and I was able to pull ahead again.
I was pleased that the Lotus behaved impeccably throughout despite the hard driving - its reputation for fragility, on this occasion at least, being ill deserved.

I'm sorry, I was looking forward to this race but my beloved family which has been filling the house for two weeks with sneezing and coughing finally convinced me to join the club.
See you in Portugal.

Well, I had a respectable and stable setup on the Brabham and was happy to coast around and pick up what I could. Very soon, though, I was trundling along happily in 4th! Sometimes people would get close behind me but soon they made a mistake and fell back again.

For half of the race things were fine. Then I made a mistake trying to take a corner slightly differently and spun. Kept my position but that was the start of the end. I started thinking about what I was doing and more and more mistakes crept in. Eventually I was running last. Such a pity. Not boring though.
