Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Friday Trophy - Zolder - Sep 13
Post by: EvilClive on September 10, 2013, 01:02:31 PM +0100
Season 25 Friday Trophy - Rounds 13 & 14 - Zolder

We continue our tour of the low countries. Another track in the Netherlands

Zolder was built in 1963 but it didn't host the Belgian Grand Prix until 1973.  Zolder hosted the Formula One Belgian Grand Prix on 10 separate occasions in the 1970s and 1980s.  But when Spa Franchorchamps was significantly revised and the safety standards vastly improved the Grand Prix returned to it's original home and Zolder fell out of favour.

This round is for the F2s and 69X.
Cars for F2            Brab BT23 and Lotus 48,               Cooper and Ferrari
Cars for 69X          Lotus 49b and Matra MS80        Mclaren M9A and BRM P126/139

joined these both races spontaneous....
67F2 was fun exept been chrashed out 2 times, but got number of laps with nice racing Ronnie..

:)Dean , dont take it too serious plz. was just moment in time comment by me, after Curtis hit me out before, 2nd cick ( by you ) needed me to shout out loud  ;)

69xrace ... I was too tiered to handle thes overheating rears whilst prib told me otptimum heat istnt still reached.  damned bloody pitty that new prib dont serve a calibration of that for specific mods ,like the old prib did.

anyroads have a nice weekend everybody :)

I was not really looking forward to this;  had a spin round here last night [it did not seem familiar - I must have been thinking of an entirely different track!] - but had no idea as to how times were looking.  But didn't think they would be particularly good;  which they clearly weren't!

Too much contact in F2 - sorry chaps for being there at the same time [although I like to think it was not just me being a liability; I've uploaded replays so I can be sent to driving awareness camp or similar if required].

I admit, I was hoping that more of the 'not pro' chaps would have turned up; so we could have swapped spins at that back. Still,  I'll take the resulting not-too-bad-considering-results then.

Surprisingly, the 69 race was more enjoyable for me,  with the ongoing 'lucky' Mosport setup [although I'd have found the F2 more enjoyable with the lovely Lola].

Maybe I am just being naive & maybe [just maybe?!]  the permitted-chassis thing really is working to compensate for lack of ability.  For me anyway, this works.  I ended up leading for a while which is obviously a bit artificial;  but every time I ran off I was overtaken by another car - which I wouldn't see again.  I'm not saying I'd have stayed ahead if I'd not gone off,  but it at least gave the initial appearance of a drive worth seeing out to the end.

Not saying that good results should be given out where they are not deserved;  but this is a FUN series - and I'm surprised that I found the 69s FUN.
(although not driven the beasts round here yet;  that will be a different matter!).

Anyway, cheers all.
Turning out to be a good series,  despite funny cars & unfamiliar tracks.

Dave.

Pity about the turn out but nonetheless great fun again. In the F2's I knew I had some pace and a car that was pretty much glued to the track so was hopeful of a good finish. Things worked out well. In the 69x's I was slightly slower than the top guys and a second gear start did not help. But after a few laps I lucked into the lead and was again looking forward to a podium finish. With two or three laps to go and a big enough lead to just bring her home for a win I decided to blow the engine to pieces instead. A shift-r later and I had to settle for fourth. Grats to Axl and Natan in Race 1 and Axl, Martin and Andreas Race 2. See you all next time.

Funny cars & unfamiliar tracks, are a part of the wealth on offer here, Dave.  They're a good way to improve overall skills at the track, and I'm surprised our grids aren't littered with Heavies.  We've a big handicap advantage, and a chance to to keep pace with the fast crowd.  Good drivers are more predictable when wheel to wheel, and it's possible to learn their technique by example.

I made a silly mistake at the 2nd corner in my race, dropped to last, but still battled back to 2nd, as 69x Heavies have a big advantage over Lights.  For those not wanting to win, I'd suggest the only requirement, is to leave room for the fast guys, and go after those with your pace.  ATM, all Heavies are guaranteed a podium spot. :D
