Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Novices and Intermediates Trophy (65) - Panchine - Sep 17
Post by: BadBlood on September 16, 2013, 09:41:10 AM +0100
Season 25 Novices and Intermediates Trophy - Round 4 - Panchine

NOTE CHANGE OF SERVER - WE NOW USE UKGPL3 AS T7 IS UNAVAILABLE

Welcome to the fourth round in the 65's class of UKGPL for the continuation of our twenty fifth season. Panchine. An imagined track in North Italy. Fast, sweeping circuit with traps for the unwary. There are a couple of jumps, a tricky turn or two and very sticky hedges, so be careful. It is a relatively long circuit so space should open up.

NB. There is ONE grid for both the Novices and the Intermediates

The Novices and Intermediate Trophies will remain sharing a grid until further notice.

Since the fields for each championship are so small, handicapping the top three drivers makes little sense. I am working on amalgamating the championships and if that can be carried through handicapping may be introduced. So, until further notice, all drivers have a FREE choice of car.

Hopefully there will be a better turn out than last time before the summer break.

Race List = IGOR
Server = UKGPL3
IP address = ukgpl3.dyndns.org
Race date = 17-09-2013
Race Time = race starts at 21:30 UK time
Qualifying Time = Between 30 and 60 minutes, starting no later than 21:00 UK time
Track = Panchine (http://javinester.co.uk/gpl/panchine.zip)
Variant = 65F1 - the 2.02 Release of the 65mod should be used
Damage Model = INT
Race length = 40 minutes (laps 20)
Password: see above (#post_event_password)
Replays Available here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_replaysS25_js.aspx)

65 Patch: The 2.02 Release of the 65mod can and should be used. You need a working installation of the 65 mod to install the 2.02 Update. All the 65 Mod files can be found here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Mods/1965)

Driver lists can be found on the Novice (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=406) and Intermediate (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=407) championship standings pages.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Intermediate drivers are limited to ONE reset. Novices have unlimited resets but EACH Shift-R MUST be followed within TWO laps by a Stop 'n' Go.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the full first lap. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

Had a great practise and race with the AI on Sunday pm, what a superb circuit!

But only one jump that I found  ;)

Looking forward to this as I actually feel quite quick here. BTW (and I don't know why I hadn't thought of this sooner) a good tip for praccy is to set a race going, then quit out and use cockpit view in a similar car to see the lines/speed the AI driver takes. Might not work for every track but it helped me learn this'n.

I practiced with the BRM, Lotus, BT11 and the Honda. I originally planned on staying with the BRM team, but now I am being pulled towards the Brabham team.

Had a mixed race. Got on the grass at the start and half span collecting Rog - sorry mate. Work for Cookie there.

Then set off and managed to pass Walter, Boggy, Rog, Mini and Dave. Unfortunately Dave got a bit of a tank slapper and took us both out. Had to reset.

Then set off in pursuit of Mini and Walter appeared in front of me on lap 7. We drove round together for 13 laps having a nice chat about Chianti. Meanwhile we had a fierce battle.

Last lap I had finally made a pass stick but knew he would draft me. He did and then took a defensive line into the complex. I left lots of room and tried to get on his tail pipes to draft into the home straight but I made a tiny error and couldn't quite make it by 0.088 seconds. Nip and tuck and BIG FUN.

My first ever fastest lap as well. Very pleased with that. Brab was nice to drive too.

Impressive times last night in both qualifying and the race. Well done to Ivan for his qualifying record and huge well done to Paul for fastest lap.

My qualifying went really well and I achieved a PB, there was no way that I think I could have improved, so was happy to be 5th on the grid. Start of the race was uneventful for me, thankful, and I got away in 3rd. I settled into the slipstream of Dave in front, and was quite surprised to get a good run on the first straight. I managed to overtake him and tried to keep with Johnny. I just could not keep with Johnny’s pace and he was gone very quickly.

I was ready for Dave to fly past me on the next straight but found that I was running in clean air for a while, I don’t know if he had a moment or not but it took him a few laps to get on my tail. I’ve got to be honest I was about to move over and let Dave chase down Johnny, but I noticed that Johnny was too far in the distance to catch, and behind me and Dave there was quite a large gap also. I hope Dave didn’t mind but I decided to have a little fun and race with him. I was so surprised that I was able to keep him at bay on the straights, I really did expect him to fly past me.

Our mini battle latest most of the race, he got a great run at me and managed to get past on the first straight with a couple of laps to go, and I just couldn’t keep with him on the twisty bits. So I finished 3rd overall, I had a race long battle with Dave and I hope we both had fun.

Looking forward to Spa already :)

I did a lot of practice in the break for this race- not to learn the track but to setup my car. I consistently lost the backend under braking lap after lap at the 90 degree right hander after the long straight and fast right hand turn. It took me ages to work out why when 2 clicks to lengthen 2nd gear were all that was needed.

I was happy with my 2nd place in qualifying as I knew that it was as good as I was able so I didn't try to better it in the final stages. A shame pole didn't race but it gave me a chance to escape. Prib showed a good race between Al and Dave which probably helped me. I had a quiet race just trying to stay neat and not over rev. My last outing here saw me lose several Honda engines which I didn't want to repeat. Well done all especially BB for fastest lap

Quiet race for me at a most enjoyable circuit. After slowing to avoid several incidents on the first lap I lost touch with everyone else and spent the remainder of the race putting in consistent lap times.
Only negative for me was the driver who thought that he would try to squeeze in to the gap between my LHS and the track edge, really early on in the race. We touched but thankfully with no incident. But I think those things can result in big off's in these cars and being so reckless that early in the race is nuts. I may check the replay and file a report.

Congrats to Johnny, Rainier and happyal, and to Bad Blood for the fastest lap!

I lowered my fifth gear one click before Qualifying, and suddenly I was in a mix of closely matched drivers. Pribluda was my best friend as I could see that I just needed one more tenth to move up the grid.

I had a slight incident at the start. I bogged the engine down as I was accelerating, and caused a traffic jam of people trying to pass me. :o  I realized too late that I needed to move closer to the wall on my right, and there was contact with another car. Luckily, my car was not damaged, and I set off after the group of cars ahead of me. The next few laps were the most exciting. Roguk and Bad Blood were behind me applying pressure. All the while, I caught up with a few cars in front of me. I benefited from other people's bad luck, and I was up to fourth place. Then, five seconds later, I missed my braking point, and flew into the black fence. The left front tire ripped from my car. I had to use a shift-R. I came out of the pits just in front of Bad Blood. I could see that he was closing the gap. I began pushing harder, braking later, and aiming for every apex. He caught, and overtook me with a couple laps to go. I was able to draft back past him on the last lap. I could not have been more relieved to see the checkered flag. I am really looking forward to the next race!

Good race everyone,
-Walter

Interestingly I got a great start and moved out on Rog but realised that I was running out of space and tried to back out but spun slightly resulting in mayhem. With hindsight I should have started slower and tucked in. I had intended to stay on the outside to set up the pull up the hill but got it wrong. Apologies to all those affected.

Al,
Yes it was a nice battle with great fun !
My Brabham BT11 was really slow on the long straight and even with the slipstream I was not able to overtake you (except at 2 laps from the finish)
On the twisty parts, I was quicker but it was not possible to overtake without big risks of accident.

Paul,
looking at your awesome best lap, it seems your setup was way better than mine !
I would be interested and happy if you could share it ... ;)

Well - first impressions what could be in GPL - although still far too slow.

Sorry to all I hampered.

Still have a big problem concerning the sounds. My inside sounds are far from
a roar of an engine but like a very high screaming which makes it difficult for me
to concentrate on the important things.
Does anybody have an advice how this could be solved.
Any help will be highly appreciated.

I have come across two threads on the SRMZ site.

http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=8403 (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=8403)

and

http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=8106&st=0 (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=8106&st=0)

As always, make a copy of the original files.

Hope that helps, Walter

Sks- Gpl has a somewhat chequered history with sound issues. There are some who find different drivers help- the soundblaster cards always gave me trouble. Some sound cards are more gpl friendly than others with fitting a different one being the answer for me. Now I just use onboard sound with Windows7 and no issues.
