Season 25 Privateers Trophy, Round 5, Porto

Round five of the Privateers. At the halfway point of the season it is time for some Portuguese sunshine.

The Portuguese Grand Prix was a motorsports event held for several years, mostly in the 1950s and then in the 1980s and 90s. It was a Formula One race between 1958 and 1960 and between 1984 and 1996.
The first event was held on the Boavista street course in Porto on 17 June 1951 as a sports car race. The Grand Prix was moved to Monsanto Park, Lisbon, in 1954 as a one-off. The first Formula One race was held in 14 August 1958 in Boavista, won by Stirling Moss in a Vanwall.

A maximum of ONE reset is allowed per race & must be followed by a compulsory Stop & Go in the pit lane within two laps of the Reset. If you Reset on the last lap a 30 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to the Ruo do Lidador. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Privateers (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=402&theme=6) standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Oodles of discos right at the end but I couldn't take advantage as my engine was smoking by then :(

Filthy habit ;)

Quite a fun race although it was bumper cars at the start and the tram lines caught me out a couple of times...

The bales at T1 ate my car twice. Last time I was almost un-stuck when the game returned me to the pits.

What does "On track laps" mean exactly?

I am not 100 percent sure but I suspect that using the roadside (as you have to do here throught the twisty bits) counts as 'off track'.

Appears that both the Privateers & Works drivers faced a very challenging street circuit yesterday – with just a couple of drivers seeing the chequered flag.
Well done to my Black Night team-mates Andreas & Rainier on your victories.

I’ve driven Porto in the 65’s before & found it a good circuit – but very difficult to keep the 67 cars out of the hay-bales. I was quite fortunate in avoiding any serious errors until the last lap. There was some good racing with teammate Dav Curtis as we swapped places half a dozen times by taking turns to brush the scenery. On the last lap I was just ahead going down the long straight. Whilst I was fully confident Dave wouldn’t run into my tail pipes I got just distracted enough to miss the brake point & end up buried in the haybale. Dave, promptly did the exact same thing.
It did feel a bit like cheating but luckily I had a Shift R in reserve & could continue to the end. At that point I was in 2nd place – mainly because Cookie & Hendy had their own haybale moments with a couple of laps to go. Happy with a podium but more thanks to the haybales playing Hungry Hippos with our race cars than my driving skills.

Next time we’re back on a proper race track – will the Mexico polos be as ravenous as the Porto hay?

The only safe car to use at this track is a Porsche Spyder, as every haybale contained a huge Spiders Web, which grabs at every car which comes too close, and creates a lot of irritation!  That's what happened to me at turn 1, twice. :(

I stayed to watch others befall the same fate, at the same spot.  And was rewarded with 2 laps remaining.  A nasty patch of apex oil remained undiscovered by the leaders until, 1st place spun on it - race over.  2nd place spun on it - race over.  3rd place spun on it, and continued - WD Andreas for your survival skills!

The Pro's had a much more interesting track,in my opinion.  I doubt any more of us would've finished there, but we could've destroyed ourselves with some style and realism, instead of from superglue!  Grumble!

In answer to Hendy's question - 'On track laps' mean you're not trying hard enough. ;D

Here here! Good going chaps!

Yes, was quite enjoyable;  the graph can be deceiving sometimes - but I hadn't realised that we'd been running close-ish for that long:

Anyway - congrats for coming out on top.  Of course, I'd like to think that if I hadn't have popped the engine of my spare car reversing out of the scenery,  then I may have had ya!  (although I'd not managed to stay ahead for very long prior to that!).

At least I did not take off over the hump & end up driving down the adjoining road as I did in an earlier season. That ended up being quite a long drive to find a way back on the track again...

Cheers,
Dave.
