Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Works Trophy (67) - Valentino - Sep 22
Post by: Phil Thornton on September 21, 2013, 10:30:01 PM +0100
Season 25 Works Trophy, Round 5, Valentino

Welcome to the fifth round in the Works Trophy.  We continue the European leg with a visit to the Valentino circuit around the streets of Turin in Italy.

Parco del Valentino (also known as Valentino Park) is a popular public park in Turin, Italy. It is located along the west bank of the Po river.  Several races were held here between 1935 and 1954, it is the 1954 layout that we will be using for this race.  This is a very challenging circuit with virtually no run-off areas, plenty of undulations and blind corners.  Discretion is the better part of valour for this track.

As always, we will run Pro Damage, so resets are not allowed.

Replays Available here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_replaysS25_js.aspx)

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=401&theme=6)

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to Viale Marinai d’Italia. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Works (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=401&theme=6) standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Sorry, fellas, but on-going computer problems will keep me out of the running for a couple more weeks at least.  :(

Having run a couple of AI races on this one, I cannot help but wonder what we've let ourselves in for...

We have run this track before, Works and Privateers in Season 21.  See here (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=9447.msg171467#msg171467) for lap times etc.

Just curious, but has the invisible wall issue been sorted out?  I think that was the cause of H's retirement in the linked race.

Monacoesque in propensity for ending in tears...only more so!  I'll be choosing a cheap chassis.

See you all later,

Baab

No I don't believe it has; so please be careful.  In fact I don't know which corner it was that caused the problem.  What I do know is that it was caused by taking too much kerb on the inside.  So the advice is: don't try and take too much kerb, stay on the tarmac.

Think I already did - missed my braking point into that stupid last chicane on lap 2.

Likewise, my race to lose after Ray retired. So guess what I did? Lost the back end of the car half way through and a wheel broke off. Deeply annoyed with myself. Congrats to whoever finishes the race.

I think everyone did apart from David Rainier who drove from last to first to take the win.  Grats David.

I was in second place with 4 laps to go when Dean lapped me and promptly drove into the haybales at the sharp right hander.  I was watching Prib to see if he was going to get going again.  His car was dropping further and further back so I knew he was well and truly stuck.  I was feeling quite smug, lost concentration and on the very next corner drove off the track and got stuck in the haybales!!!!  What an idiot  ::)

I do like the track.  It is quite a challenge but it is possible to overtake.

...Congrats to whoever finishes the race.

That'd be (only) our winner: Dave!

I got stuck in haybales (outbraked myself again) with 4 to go, with a lead of more than a lap in hand. D'oh d'oh d'oh...

This is too silly.

I rip off my wheel all by myself at T1/L1.
One finisher.

Rainier, you are The Alien.

This world, including gpl, is officialy getting silly.
I hope i can regain some semblance of belief in gpl and the rest of this world by Dessau T1/L1.

Grats Dave, Dean and Phil. I actually like this track but it is a challenge with its many visible and invisible obstacles. Sorry to see it took its toll on so many. Well done again Dave for the win and the finish.

Sorry Andy for the lap 1 rear end. You saw the yellow flag before me and I wasn't ready for an early braking. My bad.  :(
My engine exploded in the process. I hope you wasn't affected too much.
Ciao

No problem Fulvio. I could continue undamaged. I knew there would be trouble here on the first lap or two, so I was being extra careful - yes even more careful than usual. Dave had absolutely the best method here to obtain a result and congrats to him. I think it's much better to stay out of trouble and finish than to crash and burn in the first few laps. I'm sure we all were trying to finish, but this track punishes any bad luck.

I thought I could keep ahead of those behind me on the grid looking at qualifying pace. The start was ok, but Ivan had a wobble in T1 and when the rest of us avoided/stopped/touched and got going again, I was behind Natan's BRM. I waited for a few laps for something to happen and a recovering Bartosz caught me up. I let him through so I could sit back and watch. When the crash happened I slowed and waited for their cars to come to a stop, but I went too soon and the BRM slid back across the track into my path and I lost a wheel. I thought I could pick up a few more places if I could get around and cross the line again, but I was dreading getting in the way when being lapped and I got timed out stationary.

I had a strategy to do well here, but couldn't make it stick. Well done Mr. Rainier and hard luck to everyone else.

Glad I wasn't the only one to fall foul, but only one finisher is rather extreme (WD David, your first Works win?).

I actually like the track, but after a few praccy races vs the v annoying AI, I knew it was going to be tough.

I, presumably like all of us was trying to strike the cautious/reasonably fast balance, but got my car sliding into T1 on lap 3 or 4 and was consumed by a bale.  I must have been in denial to think I may get out, but tried anyways before getting timed out.

For some reason (setup?) I was quite a bit quicker in the BRM than the Cooper, so chose that for the race, good decision given the outcome!

Bob.

Yes my first Works win (it's only my second Works season).

I was always the last one and overtook no car ...but finally I won :)
I never drove on that track except 5 laps on saturday, just to set up the Ferrari.
I only join the server 10 minutes before the race.
For all these reasons, I was extremely cautious during the first laps. Then I was more and more quick and was concentrated on the gap with Phil T. (even if I knew I have no chance to join him)

Finally I am more proud for my "best lap" than for the win.
I also have to say I was very very lucky because I touched 2 or 3 times the haybales but without any bad consequence.
