Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Works Trophy (67) - Silverstone - Oct 6
Post by: Phil Thornton on September 30, 2013, 10:54:01 PM +0100
Season 25 Works Trophy, Round 6, Silverstone

Welcome to the sixth round in the Works Trophy.  The European circus continues, this time we are parking the motor homes at Silverstone.

The circuit is based on the peritrack of an old RAF airfield, the iconic Hangar Straight an echo of former times.  The first race was held in 1949 with more races held in 1950 and 1951 before the start was moved from the Farm Straight to the section between Woodcote and Copse corners.  This layout remained largely unchanged for the next 38 years and it is the configuration we will be using tonight.  A combination of long straights and fast sweeping corners, the circuit was one of the fastest on the Formula 1 calendar.

As always, we will run Pro Damage, so resets are not allowed.

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=401&theme=6)

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to Stowe. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Works (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=401&theme=6) standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Thought it was going too well - 2nd on the grid, 3 hundredths behind Sam, took the lead in T1 and set about extending the lead a la Vettel, but had Webber's luck and the Cosworth engine cried "ENOUGH FUN FOR YOU NOW!" and smoked to a croaky end.

Managed to inherit 4th place thanks to other people's misfortune,  After 7 or 8 laps I was coming under pressure from David when I put a wheel in the grass and spun.  Ripped my wheels off on a marshal's post.  Pity it was shaping up to be a good battle.

Cooper seemed like my best choice in the tokens vs. speed biz, until it went "blurg" lap 2. :(

Sorry if I crowded someone earlier that lap, had no idea where you were and was trying to stay left.

After 2 weeks R&R I was feeling a little rusty, so I thought I would save a few tokens and try and get the BRM Beast to the finish.

Surprisingly I did not qualify at the back of the grid, although I was nowhere near the times of the front row guys, and I started the race very tentatively trying to avoid over revving the engine that had such a narrow band of power.
I lost a couple of place on lap 1 but regained them again as cars departed in the early laps, until I found myself running 4th with the leader in sight!!!
Then ambition momentarily overcame ability when I pushed too hard out of Stowe and the Beast turned nasty as it put a wheel on the grass.................. the spin dropped me to last but one and a good distance behind!!

So I settled down to a steady pace and tried to reel in David who was running his normal ultra reliable race up ahead........or so I thought. I passed David somewhere when he left the circuit, not like him to make that sort of mistake. Phil also went ploughing somewhere and I moved up again.
One by one cars dropped out until I was up to 4th again ( still last!! but I prefer to say 4th!!). Sam was dominating the race out front, Ronnie appeared to be comfortable in 2nd and Bob was 3rd and still out of sight from my lowly position.  Then Bob stopped his Fezza for a sandwich and a cuppa and allowed me to take 3rd  :o :o, but he was only toying with me and proceeded to pass me several times over the last laps before parking on the grass to watch me go past and then retaking his position again....that was cruel!!! Then Ronnie vanished from the leader board and I was 3rd ( NOT last but 3rd!! ::))
I was hoping that Bob would get his wheel stuck in a rabbit hole or something on one of his excursions, but I realised just in time that the increase in pace that I had employed to try and pressure Bob had used far more fuel than I had bargained for. So I completed the last 3 laps on just 1 gall of fuel and crossed the line at a crawl with 0.1galls about to switch to zero.

So 3rd place when I had not even expected to finish...not too shabby at all. Thanks to all those who went home early and grats to Sam for a dominating win and to Bob for preventing boredom creeping over me in the last laps.

So I backed off

Random internet disconnect ended my race with a handful of laps to go unfortunately. Grats to the finishing podium!

A quiet race for me. Jethro passed me early on and proceeded to drive away only for the Lotus to reward him with a broken engine. From that point on I was in the lead driving steadily to the finish trying not to make an unforced error, remembering what ended my race a fortnight back in Valentino.

Pleased to have bagged a win, my first for a while. Congrats to Bob and Clive for making it to the end and commiserations to those that didn't. See you all at the next one.  :)

I did exactly the same mistake at the same place, after 17 or 18 laps  :(

Now I am 2nd on the works championship with only 1 point less than Samb ...but with 2 races more !

When the 2 worst results will be discarded, I should be very far from the leading guys.

Glad to entertain you Clive, I was struggling and after watching the replay counted 9 spins, two of which took a while to recover from, deary deary.  We are in the process of building a house, as a result I was pretty tired, which usually = poor performance.  I was lucky with the number of retirements & your car choice!

I took the honours of a shameful qualifying performance at the back of the grid in the Ferrari...Enzo must have been turning in his.....  I was using an adapted Watkins setup which I couldn't keep on the black stuff for even a lap.  For the race I closed my eyes and chose an untried setting of someone elses, but lo and behold it was spanking!  I was even close to my pb on the last lap.

I quite enjoyed the first few laps of the race, getting away reasonably and passing a couple of cars, then one or two more on the first lap, some genuine overtakes some due others' misfortune.  After a handful of laps I was 3rd and had eyes on the leader.  I managed to get within striking distance of Sam before the first of my 9 spins.  From thereon in it was chaos, recovering after spins and chasing Ronnie then Clive down only to spin again..... Mildly entertaining at least!

Bob
