Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Formula 2 Trophy - Westwood Park - Oct 13
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on October 09, 2013, 10:43:52 PM +0100
THIS POST IS FOR THE LIGHT & HEAVY RACES
Round 5 of the F2 trophy will be at Westwood in the Canadian backwoods. According to Wikipedia the track was closed in 1990 to make way for a housing development & a golf club – not my idea of progress. GPL takes us back to the 1967 version. It’s a short narrow track with corners that seem to tempt you to go in too fast & slide off even faster. One nice long straight with an opportunity for drafting – please try & avoid taking out the deer on the left – he is completely deaf &  carried on grazing the whole time I was practicing.

The Driver list is shown below & the Championship Table can be found here F2 Trophy  (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=405&theme=6).  In view of turn outs we will continue to run this series on a mixed grid with no chassis handicap.

A maximum of one reset is allowed per race & must be followed by a compulsory Stop & Go in the pit lane within two laps of the Reset. If you Reset on the last lap a 15 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.
In line with other divisions the races will be subject to full moderation in the red zone which will be as far as Deers Leap. The Moderator may chose to investigate any other incident, in addition to reported incidents & red zone incidents.

Please note that for UKGPL has introduced a system of penalties within each series for drivers accumulating yellow cards – see here
Penalty Points (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring these penalties will receive a PM advising when a penalty has been applied & what race it should served.

Beware there appear to be problems of the "track not installed" variety if you try and join the two Westwood servers via IGOR. But they seem fine via the IP addresses.

WOW - that was super hard. Tried to just stay out of the way of the quick boys and didn't do it very well. Apologies to the multitudes I either hit or had close shaves with. Taking to the grass to get out of the way did not prove a great strategy :(

Nice circuit though. Too tough for me with 19 ill matched runners

Yes it was a tough race, there were some very quick drivers out there.

Arf sorry for the contact on the back straight on lap 27.  There was no actual contact on my replay so there was a bit of warp involved but I should have given you more room, sorry.

19 drivers at the start !
There was several incidents during the 1st lap.
At the hairpin, I had a collision with Nigel Smith. Just before it, Nigel spun and I could not avoid it.
I had a look to the replay and I cannot see any contact between our 2 cars before Nigel spun, I think it was due to warp.

My objective was to finish before Dave C., RogUK and Billy N. and I did it. It was a very hard fight with Rog, quicker than me here but with no real opportunity to overtake !
It was a close battle and Rog did not make any mistake which was not easy on such a narrow track !

That was a real struggle.  Used the same car as the Friday event,  but just could not brake/corner/steer/drive straight/drive it at all here.
Maybe I should have had a pint & a brandy beforehand tonight too...

Just to echo Badblood,  the driving experience was rather mismatched tonight.
I'm also sure Prib was also lying again as to who was around me, with distances/positions erratic at times.

Again, trying to keep out of the way did not seem to go very well at times. For which I apologise, although I'm aware that may sound empty.  Probably worse due to the size of the grid (great turn-out though!) & short lap,  so endless stream of chaps coming around again.

In short, not the Sunday night event I was looking forward to.

Cheers all anyway,
Dave.

Quick question  - has Downton Abbey finished or something?   [I had been getting some quiet for recent weekend evenings...]  If so, maybe that explains the enthusiastic turn-out tonight...?

Certainly an eventful race that. Clive pipped me for pole again and I spent a fabulous 2 laps chasing him down. That was until I lazily spun at one of the hairpins and the three cars following did a fine job avoiding me. I proceeded to catch up and work my way up to 2nd place. I was catching Clive slowly and managed to get within 7 seconds of him with about 12 laps to go, but sadly myself and Dean had a misunderstanding while I was trying to lap him and our contact dropped lost us both about 10 seconds, ending any remote chance of catching Clive. After that, it was a relatively calm race to end, finishing in 2nd place.

Pleased with 2nd, although I'm a bit gutted I lost it on lap 2. It would be nice to win at least one race in this F2 series. I was surprised by the turnout this race but it was great to see; the more the merrier  :). I'm thankful to everyone for being considerate when being lapped. Apologies to Dean for our contact, I was commited to the inside and before I knew it you were right in front of me. Congrats to Clive for the win and Ronnie for rounding off the podium.

Nightmare practice session - could not string two laps together. I can do a 1.07 but happy to start in the 1.08's.
Bizzarrely my BT23 seemed to arrive on the grid with no rev needles - never had that before. I half hoped an "Escape" might fix the problem & let me start from the pit lane - but no luck.
Very tough track & unlikely to be in my future top picks - but you have to try them all.
Most pleased with the excellent turn out - I hope there were no later joiners who got locked out. Looks like two grid next time.

Rather odd race for me ,

Couldn't join the normal way so used the Ip in gpl ,everthing seemed fine during qualy then at the start a huge stutter going into T1 made me go off ,a few laps later got caught out by someone i was fallowing into the same turn ,ended on my top and had to reset ,after that it was smash and grab for most of the race sry to those i hit  :'(. By the finish i was so bent i was lucky to finish at all .

Very hard first race for me. As I'm new to GPL i'm very slow at the starting line so that was my first concern. Did it well but with so many people around got little confused and went off road with no bad consequences. Then gained several positions managed to go 5th and closed the gap between me and the 4th. Then bad thing happened :D Met Paul's right tyre while he was trying to get on track and crashed. My suspencion was broken but not a very big problem. Lost one postiton and started following Natan. After several laps i was back to 5th. Made some good laps and then late braking and crash into the wall. Sorry Natan for being hit by me flying after the crash. Grats to all finished!

Actually it was worse than that. I was trying NOT to get on track and just couldn't stay straight on the grass. Sorry Ivan.

Another interesting and frustrating night.

I made a great start off the line and made up 3 or 4 places, only to see Dean move at right angle to the first right hander and I T-boned him. Happily, neither of us seemed to be harmed and I got away ahead of him. Sadly he got his braking wrong at the end of the back straight and he went into the back of me. He sent me off and I think this caused some interesting lines through the corner. In particular it meant that BadBlood had to change his line through the corner, and as he had no idea I was there, clipped my car and sent me into a spin. I ended up back on the track, facing the wrong way and Dean had no way way to miss me. That sent him off the track... well..if someone had to suffer I can't think of anyone more deserving Mr D :-)

Then on Lap 12, I was passing Dave C over Deer's Leap. The corner has a bit of a kink as you go over the summit which means anyone of the left tends to wander into the right hand side, and that's exactly what Dave did. That left me having to go over the grass to avoid a contact...but also meant controlled braking for the corner was impossible and I span. I checked no-one was coming, rejoined the circuit...and took Ronnie out as he was lapping me. Looking at the race replay it appears you warped at that moment Ronnie, so that was why I didn't know you were there......sorry anyway.

Then Lap 27....Phil, I knew you would get me at Deers Leap, and I didn't want the kink causing me to run into you, so I deliberately stayed right. Whilst I agree it looks like warp took me out, I think it was the kink that brought you over so close to me... no worries anyway.

On Lap 30, I watched Nigel do an epic spin in front of me, which took in both sides of the back straight - still not sure how he missed me. That was all for the race....but there's more.

I knew I'd been lapped during the race, but it was only twice, not the three the race results state. On the race server I am about 50m from the flag when my car disappears. At the time, I passed the flag and slowed down at the side of the road. I don't think it changes anything re the results, so I'm not sure any action is worthwhile, but would be interested to know what happened?

Cheers

Arf

p.s. re sudden popularity of the race. I for one have been away for a month else I'd have been at the previous races.

No problem Arf. On my replay you just appear out of nowhere, so there was not a lot either of us could do. Maybe related to my connection last night but did anyone else have any issues with sound during the latter part of qualifying and the race? Even though I disconnected and rejoined during qualifying the sound of my car was screwed and decidedly monotone regardless of gear or speed.

As for the race, lucky to inherit second when Sam spun early on but unlucky to hand it back when me and Arf simultaneously used our cloaking devices. Great turnout and on a short lap relatively narrow circuit kept it entertaining throughout. Apologies if any lapping moves caused people to lose any time. For certain I made a right pigs ear of a pass on Marco, sorry.

Grats again to Clive and Sam. See you all at the next one I hope.

I didn't notice any sound issues Ronnie.

Warp, yes, I did notice a few instances when the red bars went crazy. Generally the connection seemed OK, proving my long held belief that (as a laptop user using GPL Power Monger) there isn't any disbenefit to using a laptop..... I must admit though, that I'm still jetlagged from holiday, and whilst I did put a cable into the laptop (I usually race on a wired connection), I forgot to put the other end into the router.......

I was little late in joining the server for this race..........decorating duties  :-\.
But I was not too late to witness Sam stick in a blistering lap with a 1:05!!! Ronnie was not far behind and Dean looked menacing as well as Axel. Geeeez this was going to be a fast race if those times were anything to go by. Especially on this track where there are only about 1.5 passing places.

I did my customary laps on race fuel to get dialled in to the track and managed to temporarily get a place on the 2nd row,.............hmmmm with 15 minutes to go that looked unlikely to survive given the pace of those around me. So, I confess that this time I dumped a couple of galls of fuel in an attempt to improve my qually position.

It did not work lol!!  :-\ and I made only a marginal improvement.  :-\

So I decided instead to go back to race fuel and concentrate on maximising my pace for the early laps with cold tyres and a heavy car. I was gobsmacked when I looked at Prib 10 minutes later to see yours truly on pole, but only by a couple of hundredths of a second. "That surely would be beaten in the last few minutes" I thought.

But the time stayed there as I nervously watched the last few cars complete qually. Woohoo what a lucky stroke!!  Now all I had to do was nail some fast laps on cold tyres, break the tow to Sam, build a gap between myself and about 6 others who had posted qually times within tenths of what I had fluked. yeah right lol!!!

With the F2 slipstream and Sam in a super quick Matra what was there to worry about eh??? I nailed the gas off the line and made T1 first hugging the inside line.
T2 was Ok and I got a fast exit and committed as much as I dared on cold tyres to that tricky T3 leading onto the back straight, using all of the track and as much welly as the tyres would take.......but still Sam was within slipstream range.??!!!?? .
If I gave him an opening he would be past like a shot, so I move to the right very early....if he wanted to pass me it would have to be the looong way around the hairpin at the end of the straight.
Somewhere I pulled a few more metres out and by the second lap had just enough lead to be safe from the slipstream...he could close the gap but not enough to attempt a pass  ::) But the pace was insane!!! I was right on the very edge of what I could control and there were a few moments when sphincter flutter almost got the better of me  :o.

Then Sam was gone from 2nd but Ronnie had taken up the challenge, geez I must have wicked somewhere cos I was getting no rest!!! I pressed on concentrating on getting my braking points right for the critical corners and making clean exits....when I say clean, what I really mean is only 2 or 3 wheels on the grass and armfuls of opp lock.!!!

I think Ronnie eventually had a "moment" and I suddenly had a small cushion that allowed me to relax just slightly, which actually produced some better lap times by a few tenths and I was able to ease the gap out.
It was lucky that I had such a large gap with 10 laps to go because that early pace where I maxed out each and every gear change had consumed far more fuel than I had anticipated and I spent those last laps short shifting and coasting into corners, whilst watching the gap back to second and praying that it stayed big enough to allow me to creep home....unlike Edmonton!!!

Grats to Sam and Ronnie and all the finishers. Also thanks to those drivers I had to lap, who allowed me a safe passage as soon as they were able. It is not an easy track to move off line on and I appreciated the fact that they kept a steady line and did not panic. I did not want the added pressure of guessing what a car in front was going to do.  ;) ;)

Looks like Ronnie and myself might have shot ourselves in the foot by scoring too many points too soon............we are both +30 over the next guy................oops!

Thanks for the reminder Ronnie! It is about time to introduce the handicaps. You & Evil will be restricted to the Cooper (or Ferrari or BT14 if you are feeling adventurous). Sam can have either Lotus or either Lola. As there are fewer entrants than expected 4th & 5th places in the table are not handicapped.
No handicaps for the Heavy division - again down to low turnouts.
I hope the slight re-interpretation of the rules is OK for all.
