Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Novices and Intermediates Trophy (65) - Edmonton - Oct 15
Post by: BadBlood on October 13, 2013, 12:38:57 AM +0100
Season 25 Novices and Intermediates Trophy - Round 6 - Edmonton

Welcome to the second half of the championship in the 65's class of UKGPL. Edmonton. (and NOT Spa again as Walter pointed out - thanks Walt ;)). Edmonton, also known as Speedway Park opened a Can Am track in 1968. With the first 4 races being won by ’67 F1 world champion Denny Hulme. A tough track to master but some great opportunities for passing and close racing.

This round had been scheduled as Dundrod but that track has proved problematic so Edmonton steps up and Bathurst will host round seven.

NB. There is ONE grid for both the Novices and the Intermediates

The Novices and Intermediate Trophies will remain sharing a grid until further notice.

In view of the relatively small grids across two championships, handicapping makes little sense so all drivers have a FREE choice of car.

Replays Available here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_replaysS25_js.aspx)

65 Patch: The 2.02 Release of the 65mod can and should be used. You need a working installation of the 65 mod to install the 2.02 Update. All the 65 Mod files can be found here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Mods/1965)

Driver lists can be found on the Novice (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=406) and Intermediate (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=407) championship standings pages.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Intermediate drivers are limited to ONE reset. Novices have unlimited resets but EACH Shift-R MUST be followed within TWO laps by a Stop 'n' Go.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be the whole of the first lap. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

I will do my best at this race, and I hope to have a good time even if I end up in the catch fencing a time or two. I want to "make the most of it" because there is a three week break after the Edmonton race.
 :) Good day, Walter

This is my first visit to Edmonton and already it is a favourite. I've tried several cars but found no consistancy with any, I'm still not sure which one to use- more practice needed.

The laps is based on a leading time of 1:36-1:37 but that is looking optimistic at the mo.

I am getting solid 1:38s and 1:37s if I crash...

Not much data to go on so I might go 24 laps. Any strong views?

I'm rubbish here and don't see me lasting the full distance whatever it is. Can't say it's a fav track of mine at the mo.

After missing the start of the F2 race  I decided to sort out a set up for Edmonton. Lapping at a consistent 1.39 - 1.38 without hitting things.

I'll set for 24 laps I think.

@Tony, not actually a favourite of mine either - it is quite technical and getting round without hitting things is a challenge. Setup to get the car rotating under brakes is a must here. Nice thing is that when you DO nail a corner, it is very satisfying.

I hate this track, I can't get around without spinning :(

I'll try my best but not expecting a decent result here, but I suppose you can't like all tracks can you?

The challenging part for me are the two chicanes. They demand my full attention. I imagine a straight line going through the chicanes, and try to hit those Apexes. Good luck! WC

Well after my usual one or two laps of hopeless driving I eventually managed to get into the groove and found that this circuit did indeed grow on me. Nice one Paul.

Well that was fun...intense concentration, but fun. Set a PB in qually, and still ended up 3rd...a second behind Ivan. Still the fastest lapper doesn't always win, and tonight was a perfect example of that. I managed it because I lapped more consistently than I think I have ever done before.

Off the line Ivan managed to miss the flag man. I'm afraid that's cos if you're on pole you have to look for him. I noticed that when practicing against the AI. That left JP and I fighting for T1. Whilst I won (with a slightly crazy line to ensure there was no contact), I lost it soon after because of a failed downshift (had a few of them tonight). Once Ivan had passed Dave R and caught us, that left me sandwiched between two guys that could lap quicker than I. JP was managing to eek out a small advantage as I mainly focussed on not cocking up any corners to let Ivan through. There was a bit of warp which made me scared to get too close to JP, as I'd worked out where he was vulnerable. However, as Ivan found against me, it is one thing catching on this track, and quite another to pass. In the end JP overcooked a corner and left myself and Ivan to battle it out. Can't imagine how the clearly quicker driver was feeling stuck behind me. Not sure what happened in the end, maybe a spin, but all of a sudden I was 6 secs clear.

With 6 laps to go I started having downshift issues into T2, so I just concentrated on smooth driving, and made the assumption that if Ivan did catch me he still wouldn't be able to pass. Slightly alarmed that he finished less than a second behind me, but that just shows how much quicker he was in clean air.....

So, a lucky one for me, given the start, but they all count!!

WD everyone

Arf

Well, was pretty happy with the start & managed to gain a couple of places right away.  However, the top 4 were immediately edging away & Rog followed me around for a while.

Maybe he was just biding his time, waiting for me to make a big mistake - but seemed that he could not quite get close enough.  If so - great!  all I had to do was stay consistent & hope he'd not get any faster...  So a few laps later I made the big mistake & then my turn to follow for a while.

More mistakes [including managing to grab neutral AGAIN for T2 which did not work out too well]  & then Walter arrived, passed, and soon up the road keeping Rog company.

Up ahead, the Rog/Walter show was edging into view a couple of times;  but more mistakes dropped me back again.  Not that I'm suggesting I could have done anything but the plan was to just try to catch up first...

All in all, probably lucky to get out with 7th & a PB.

Cheers all,
Dave.

Tough circuit. Awesome start, wheel on the grass. Blast!

Couldn't quite get a rhythm going but found Al bearing down on me and that made me concentrate which put me on Bill's tail. Pushed a bit hard and got beached so quick reset and pit stop later I set about chasing Al and Nigel. Nige had disappeared somewhere and Al had awesome Fezza drive off the corners but I was a teeny bit neater which put me behind. Took a lot of laps to catch him and I was planning to draft down the pit straight and out brake him into T1. Risky but possible. Al couldn't cope with the awesome pressure I was putting on <ahem> and had a small spin.

After that it was a case of waiting for the flag as Billy impolitely refused to make a mistake...

Some fun chases and although I haven't necessarily finished high enough up the order to be really competitive, I have had some fun chasing and being chased.

Roll on next year back in the Novs....

Next season it will be one championship with a light/heavy split.

Nice to see a decent turn out.

BTW Sorry to whoever I T-boned at the last corner, couldn't control the car well enough at that stage to miss you. Sorry again.

I had a good qually. I could not have done much better than 5th on the grid. I was slow on the start and I lost a few positions. I had a calm opening lap, but I lost it on the exit of turn three on the second lap (I think). I was just off for a second, but I might have fallen back to 9th or 10th place. My race was very interesting because I had four or five cars in front of me to try to catch. Everyone that I raced against showed good sportsmanship. It was a challenging race. I was hesitant to take many risks because I just wanted to bring it home. I finished in 5th place, the same as my starting position.  Thanks to the organizers, and congrats to winner and the runner ups.

Good race, Walter

God I hate this track, I just could not get a rhythm here at all.
Got a PB in Quali, and was mid grid. My start was OK, I managed to pass a few people. Going into the first corner someone was being really cautious, and slowed down really early. I had to jink to the left to miss them, and that ended up with me in a tank slapper. Luckily I didn’t hit anyone, but did spin and ended up last.

Started up again and chased Paul for a little while, and then Nigel but I just couldn’t keep up any pace, and if I gained one lap, I would loss it the next. Me and Nigel passed Paul on his roof, but once he was upright again he was much quicker than me and forced an error. I don’t know what happened to Nigel….

After that I had a lonely couple of laps until the finish. It really was nice to see such a large grid, hope that will continue. I'm looking forward to the next race, and I hope to do much better.

Congrats to Podium guys, there were some serious fast drivers here and you have my respect.

A race of two halves for me, I got a decent start with Arf flying past me with some great tippy toe driving into the first chicane. I never got the following right hander right all race and Arf knew it. He was faster than me but it is a hard place to overtake and I managed to stay in front aided by Ivan pestering Arf for second place. About 12 laps in I ran wide and spun dropping back to fourth. I tried a stupid overtake on Dave R and thankfully did not take him out. I stayed in front for about a lap until I spun again and rolled it but luckily no damage. I chased Dave to the flag but couldn't catch him. The pace upfront was really quick and proved too much for my concentration over race distance. I take my hat off to all on the podium, there was some terrific driving. I think Walter also deserves a mention with some incredible qualifying. Really enjoyable race- see you all next time.

We did Edmonton in F2’s a few weeks ago. I knew the track but the unknown quantity was what would be a good benchmark time. I was thinking 1.37 would be competitive – the pace of the guys at the front was awesome.
There were one or two corners where I could have braked a bit deeper or tried to carry a higher gear but I didn’t want to experiment during race conditions. After the first few laps I’d worked out that Paul & then Al weren’t going to close up unless I made a mistake. The guys in front were too quick, apart from Nigel who I was aiming to do some racing with but he disappeared into the pits. After that it was just a case of keeping a clean run to the flag.
Nice to see the grid is a starting to fill up a bit.

Thanks, I spent a lot of time doing practice laps. I really should practice timing the race start. I feel like Mark Webber on the starting grid! I am looking forward to the upcoming races. Bathurst, Silverstone, Zolder and Monza should be good fun to race.

EDIT: I somewhat regret my choice to be reserve driver instead of a full time driver at this point in the season. I will really kick myself if we have a full grid.

Managed to do 1st time in Q and then like always a bad start. Went to 4th or 5th. After several laps went to 3rd after Arf. 8 laps before the end i thought that i could overtake him and began closing and thinking where but made a mistake and spun.
Then lost concentration and made several small mistakes but with no bad consequences and decided to try if i could make fastest lap. 2 laps before the Finish saw Arf and tried to reach him but no success. That was a great race Grats Arf for the win!

Joined late for practice and had a spin during my first lap. On trying to get back on track
in wrong direction I got disqualified and wasn't allowed to come back.
So I decided to give this a miss, because I didn't want to be even slower than usual
without a single online lap. Looks like it'll take some doing with GPL  ::)

Still sound problems - but only online. Offline sound looks better after some
installing some alternate files.

Trying again next time.

Is there a weeks break? Edmonton was 15/10 so next race would usually be 29/10?
