Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Privateers Trophy (67) - Oulton Park - Oct 20
Post by: BadBlood on October 17, 2013, 09:35:06 PM +0100
Season 25 Privateers Trophy, Round 7 Oulton Park

Welcome to the seventh round in the Privateers Trophy. From Mexico to Cheshire - Oulton Park, a circuit that looks much nicer in real life than it does in GPL.

The circuit is built in the grounds of Oulton Estate which comprised an old manor house, some lodges, farmland and a lake.  The names of a couple of bends, Lodge Corner and Old Hall Corner, hint back at a more sedate existence.  The first race at Oulton Park was held in 1953 on a makeshift rectangular circuit which was extended in 1955 to the full circuit we will be using tonight.  The track is quite narrow and in places and the run-off is limited (particularly at Knickerbrook where a local B road skirts the boundary of the park) so to make it safer several chicanes have been added in recent years.  Thankfully we don't need to worry too much about that, so we will be able to enjoy driving the 1967 version of the track which flows majestically through tree lined avenues, up steep hills, round double apex corners and banked hairpins.  There has never been a round of the Formula 1 World Championship held at Oulton Park but there were a lot of non-championship Formula 1 races held there between 1954 and 1982.  Most of these race meetings were called the "International Gold Cup".  A name that lives on in the guise of the Gold Cup historic race meeting; a sort of Goodwood of the north.  Same races but less posh totty, and rather ironically less flat caps!

Thanks to Phil for the potted history.

A maximum of ONE reset is allowed per race & must be followed by a compulsory Stop & Go in the pit lane within two laps of the Reset. If you Reset on the last lap a 30 second time penalty will be awarded.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to the exit of the final corner (Nearly the whole lap). Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Privateers (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=402&theme=6) standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Thanks to Cookie for putting it right.

After 23laps my engine died,
after a s+r and s+g I still had a comfortable lead.
So I drove carefully low reving, but 2 laps later the engine just exploded...

Bad luck Cookie. Mine exploded only once and you were literally miles ahead.

WOOHOO

Sorry, bad manners I know. But 200 fruitless races makes the first one very special.

I got lucky as first Martin got punted off and I inherited third and then Hendy disappeared so I was second. I concentrated on being neat and tidy and braking at exactly the same point and slowing if I felt I was losing it. Had a spin but managed to get going before Martin caught me and built a lead by just being consistent. Axel was miles ahead and would have probably lapped me if he had gone full distance. I didn't even notice that I was leading until 2 laps to go and then I got VERY nervous.

Engine had let go but I had enough of a lead to get out comfortably ahead of Andreas and I more or less maintained the gap.

Had a couple of scary moments passing people (I am not used to it) so thank you Pierre, James and Michael for helping me out. I'll be back behind you next time out ;)

First win and it took a bit of luck but it was my most controlled best drive in a 67 by miles. Chuffed to bits.

YAAAAAAAAY!!!!  well done Paul!!!

I would not downgrade your win because the cars in front blew their engines. You preserved your machinery better and as the saying goes..."to finish first, first you have to finish".

I can still remember the first time I led a race with a chance of winning. It was scary!! So many ways that you can throw it all away that it is difficult to maintain concentration.

Big Grats Paul....you should have listened when we told you that "one day you WILL win a race"  ;D ;)

Many congratulations, Paul - it's good to see a fresh face on the top step. I didn't realise that you were in the lead when you lapped me as I'd already been lapped by other drivers. But thankfully you got past safely.
I had a few interesting laps racing wheel to wheel with Philippe while holding off Martin until the inevitable errors crept in and Martin slipped through.

Well done Paul – well deserved victory. You made a better job of a hard track than the rest of  us.
After the first few laps I found myself in third – Cookie & Paul pulling away in front. I didn’t make any serious errors but it’s very easy to run off  lines & I lost places to Andreas, Dave C and (temporarily) Martin.
An apology is due to Pierre – I followed him into the hairpin on the final lap & was caught out by his braking point. Had my foot hard on the brake but needed the back end of the Fezza to stop. I’m pretty sure I braked at my usual point.
As mentioned, Oulton is a very challenging track for 67 cars, but a good one nonetheless.

:clown:                             Oulton Park is, a tough track to tame,                         :clown:

With many an effort, expiring in flame,

It takes little effort, to put one to shame,

Defying both Novice, and those of great fame,

'Tis mostly the corners, which shoulder the blame,

                             'Tis wise to remember, it's only a game!

                           _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _  _

Very lucky to hold onto 3rd on the grid, my car was barely adequate.  Dave was all Eagle eyed at the start, and I ran wide to avoid his attentions, with no actual contact made, early in the opening lap.  Because the competition is tight, at the pointy end, where the most points are scored, this left me with an uphill battle, to fend off disappointment.

I'd recovered to 3rd behind a dashing BadBlood, at half distance, when I came across a bad sign.  I knew it was a bad sign, when I hit it!  Suffering a hairy moment, I'd become pinned at the hairpin . . . Grumble!  My excess hairiness meant a stop & go for a reset.  And with my 2nd set of tyres, I wasn't able to get properly hooked up.  So hung around the midfield for the finish. :-\

Congrats. to our new race winner - that's enough of that.  And an impressive run from Dave, to swoop on so many, after receiving a bad sign so early.

Congratulations Paul !
As a matter of fact, I was wondering if you were crying over your steering wheel like Jean Alesi in Montreal when Billy interrupted my thoughts .
I'm the one to blame ,BN, I was just not racing any more .

Ah, but Bernie, you didn't see the oil his car chucked down, for Dave and me on the first lap.  That's not easy to do when you're behind!  What we needed was a high speed road block.  You must stop messing about, and get back behind the wheel.   :notworthy:

I agree. You must believe me when I tell you that I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as standard bearer for the Soggies as I would wish to do without the help and support of the one and only Bernie (with apologies to King Edward VIII)
