The Porsche cars are so much fun in the "S" curve. It is a great track, and I am glad that Pork is on the menu.

Crickey Walter you get your practise in early!  :P

Should be about for this and these cars should be a lot of fun on this great but challenging track  8)

There will definately be some pork on the menu, it is not yet certain exactly whether it will be roast with all the trimmings or just
pork butties. I am hoping for some 3rd party testing results before the line up is finalised  :chef:

These cars are much more awkward to drive here than at Spa (narrower and nasty kerbs), for me at least, so my times are likely to be even more
wayward than usual. Only the RSR is an "easy drive" in my hands  :o

EDIT: After results from testing I will leave the cars as they are. There seems to be no clear single faster car, it seems to depend
on which suits best. Plainly the normal GT40s are not as fast here as the Gulf, and there is a good spread of times in the Porsches
on offer to suit most people.

Long time I didn't race with y'all, mainly because a G25 failure. I would be pleased if I can go back at such a track (I love it  :P). Are the 906/8 available here ?
Still not sure to be free though..

There is too much damn grip available!    :P

I need big engines and tyres made of cardboard!

Did you try the 911?  You can brake about a fortnight after the GT40!

Umm This series is meant to be GTR2 but from the "Olden days"

We are getting towards the end of the seasons, until I consult the diaries
not sure if this is the last or not, but I need to think of next year's stuff

I am happy to start any new series similar to this year's but something
different is also good, I could wade through the posts in each series to
see which had the most whinges constructive criticism
But some input would be helpfull. It won't be he who shouts loudest
but if you say nothing then don't be upset if next year's are not suitable

Luke has been running the GTR2 series for some years now based on
a tried and tested format, so we don't have to change anything unless
people want to.

I think running it with a different series/class/era each alternate week as you have been doing is the right formula. It caters for everyone and satisfies most persuasions of vintage racing.  :)
It's cool knowing one week it's 60's tintops then next might be a lairy 70's GT race.
The endurance round was possibly least popular in attendance so how about putting a proper sportscar round in its place using the cars more suited ie GT40's, 906-8, Vette big block etc on big tracks that suit them like Spa, Paul ricard, Suzuka, Sebring Dijon etc.

Prob best starting a seperate topic for suggestions though Matt as this race thread will get drowned!  :P

Not turned a lap here yet in any of these cars  :'( and won't get much chance before Thursday.

My wish for 2014 would be races in small cars, with small engines, on narrow tracks with lots of concrete walls and chicanes. Could be fun to do 2 x 20 min races in a row using reversed grid for the second race. And why not add a mandatory pitstop for both short races?

PS. This reply is risky, Capt. Clive might rule me in bad standing :-))

Why not run a series containing multiple classes?

Had a little practice session at Suzuka last night in the 3.0 Porker. I like running at Suzuka so looking forward to it. Today that all changed as I managed to smash my right elbow at work. Sore as hell atm and on ice trying to get the swelling down and some non-painful movement going. S'posed to be racing with WSL tomorrow night but that looks doubtful. I'll make it if I feel up to it.

Can't really comment on the league structure being the noob, the Thursday night sessions are just right for me time wise and I aint bothered which cars are being run, I'll always find something that'll make me smile. I'll leave any decisions to the powers that be.

I'd agree with this. We certainly have enough takers for multiclass and it would add another dimension to the racing.

Unfortunately I'll be unable to make this one as I doubt that my new pc will be delivered and running in time, so have fun.

Funny you say that, I was going to suggest a Porsche-only series ;)

Why not run a series containing multiple classes?

It's all well and good, but you're effectively halving the chance of having someone to race with.

Having said that, I agree entirely with this:

I aint bothered which cars are being run, I'll always find something that'll make me smile. I'll leave any decisions to the powers that be.

Well said :)

You could make the top five drivers in the limited championship drive a slower car than the rest of the field. For example, the top five would have to drive the cobra 289 roadster, and the rest of the field could drive the Cobra Coupe.

Also, it would be great if we could use the Porsche IROC for a limited race.

I agree with all of this, I have enjoyed the variety of classes and eras. The very long races don't do it for me really (though I got my only win at Sebring) because of the potential to screw up the pitstop.

If I could add a suggestion of my own it would be: more classic tracks, and no Mickey-Mousey ones (Valencia or Oschersleben). But I realise that this is a question of personal taste only.

Multiple class racing is pointless unless you can get 60+ drivers. All it does is spread the field out even further.

looking at the performance spread in this group at Suzuka, i'd say we already have multi-class racing and a possibility of shunts !
But I only managed to bang in about 8 laps total last night as a sighter using two different cars and they were surprisingly similar in laptime.  The RSR feels like sim-racing nirvana through the 'S' turn complex in sector 1 for me  8)

Not keen for multi class or two short events.

Anything that increases the admin load is out for me. I struggle to find time for what we have been doing.

One of the things that differentiates these series is the 40 minute event, which has been popular in the past
and seems to be so now.

I like the idea of some form of handicapping in at least one of the series. Top 5 have to drive "these" cars. That's fairly easy to do.
I liked things that Legzy and Tony have done in the past, but I won't be keeping spreadsheets up to date etc.
From an easy admin point of view I might create one series with a fixed car list of 3 or 4 in a faster and also a few in a slower group.
All I need to do then is pick tracks and create the events  :thumbup2:

Enduro gets a lot of negatives, so that will likely not happen next year.
Walter is keen to run some Big American cars and is putting in time for testing, so that might become a series, similar to Tony's GTL one.
I like having a Spec or limited choice series, is usually fun and is very light on testing time.
I don't plan to change the format much, unless someone comes up with a new idea that is easy to implement
it's more about what classes do people want so far.

Title: Re: UKPnG Season 8 Sports Car Series - Suzuka - Nov 14
Post by: Mark J on November 12, 2013, 04:44:05 PM +0000
I personally like an enduro every now and then as the long game tactics and pit stop can spice it up nicely, but think they only need to be occasional as special events or double pointers in a series like they do for Le Mans or Sebring to encourage entry lists.
Not interested in 2x short races. Our 40 min races are just right length to have a good sprint format with an element of worn tyres & tiredness creeping in over the last 10mins to give it an endurance element too. Spot on. A mandatory stop could be interesting too depending on known tracks without pit problems and the class of car involved.

I'd have on a rotating weekly basis:-
a British touring car class on uk club tracks (always popular)
A 60's Gt series
A 70's Gt series alternate rounds using grp2 & 4
US muscle car series on US/Canadian tracks
A fast sportscar series on big tracks
A spec race series

That covers all bases and should utilise the whole car range  :) more refinement is needed when allowing cars too, it's no good saying 'all escorts' for instance when they have massively different bhp/t figures or several years development improvement in handling and braking. As proved at the Birmingham GP round! Closer the car group, the closer the racing :)

Handicapping is good if it can be done well.  I'm in the top five of all the current series but I'm a hell of a lot slower than those people that I'm fighting with!  Putting all of the top five in a slower car is fine if they are all aliens.  I'm giving John about three seconds a lap at Suzuka and the last thing that I need is to be put in a car that lets even Old Legzy have a go at me!    :P

Having said that, if this turns out to be Matt's Be Kind to Porsche Week, then I shall probably be lapped by the top five!

I enjoy racing at Valencia and Oschersleben (in response to the "mickey mouse tracks" comment), but I appreciate that it is hard to overtake at Oschersleben. Nevertheless, I have no idea why so many people do not like the Valencia track. I think that it is a superb track for P&G3 races, and (for the record) I enjoy it a lot more than many of the old "classic" tracks.

As for this one, I will probably drive the GT40 MkI Gulf. I have no idea how it compares to the RSR3.0 around here...

I like Valencia too, works surprisingly well for vintage racing.

Surprised to hear praccy was an RSR lockout, thought the 906-8 would be a race winner here. Someone check what car Clive is in as that will be the fastest of the set  ;) Gt40's will be monstering the two long straights and are prob wide enough to hold their own in sector 1.

Post by: johnw on November 13, 2013, 11:33:27 AM +0000
Valencia? Where to start...

There's no 'flow' to it. It looks like it's been designed with a ruler, a protractor and some arbitrary angles.
It feels featureless, characterless & flat (I know it's not actually flat, but there's no sense of elevation driving round it), all the kerbs are very wide and very flat, which encourages no-consequence cutting. I don't get a feeling of achievement stringing a sequence of corners together unlike, for example, the esses at Suzuka. There's also no risk involved trying to squeeze that last little bit of time out of a lap, you'll just run a bit wide onto one of the runoff areas or maybe some gravel, lose a few tenths then life will continue. It's hardly the same as running wide at Eau Rouge or taking too much speed into 130R, etc.

I realise I've used the words 'feeling' and 'sense of' a lot, which is all very woolly, but that's what's missing for me at Valencia for some reason.

Anyway, diatribe over and let's get back on topic - The RSR feels absolutely sublime around Suzuka :)

Post by: Mark J on November 13, 2013, 12:14:24 PM +0000
Hmm assuming all the usual suspects have found the RSR to be the pace setter out of this group of cars, we could always make it the 2.8 version instead of a 3.0L  :-\ that or make a new rule that all the glory hunters who now take the RSR also have to use it when there are capris and beemers to use next time round  ;) ;D (not including John in that sarcasm!)  :P

I would say not to worry if the grid is mostly RSR's for this race. It will provide some great racing. I am considering one of the 60's prototypes, but we'll have to wait to see.  ;)

EDIT: I think that anyone able to finish the 17 laps in a 60's prototype machine is a winner.  ;D

Well it was a choice of the 911 or the 906-8 for me. So after some testing it looks like the 911, at least I can keep it on the track. I still really cannot get on with the 906-8 although when I do keep it on the track its faster than the 911. It really puzzles me why it is so difficult to drive (or why I find it so difficult). I have always had problems stopping it, applying the brakes seems to give the steering a mind of its own & predicting where it will go is a lottery. I really wanted to give it a run here but it looks like I will be joining the 911 hoards.

Cya tomorrow.  :thumbup1:

Exactly the same for me, dunno why exactly, wasn't a problem last time I gave it a try on another track (Spa I believe). Even the GT40s are far more predictable ! Maybe we should try with a huge negative front toe-in...

Be interesting to know if they have tweaked the 906-8 as I found it less easy to drive on the limit too. It was a pleasure to drive in p&g2.1 and I think it sounded better than it does now. Could just be a setup issue  :-\ we need a 906 sports car race to find out  ;)

Not heard much mention of the Pantera here, nobody taking it? Thought it would be pretty quick around here.

At Preluk the 906-8 was slower in reality than the "ordinary" 906 even though it was potentially faster
mostly because the rear is noticeably heavier than the normal one.
I think the standard 906 is a race winner. But then I think any of the cars is a race winner in the right hands.
Panty is my prefered option, the GT40 is too big for to me drive well here, the Panty is kerb sensitive
but I like it.  :punk:

So sorry Geoff, that has to be one of my worst moments in sim-racing - i was actually trying to let you past on the straight but a little dab on the brake threw me violently into your path (why..?!).

Had no time for any practice/qually tonight and should have been better prepared. Sorry again.

Enjoyed the mix of cars & at a good circuit. Had many nice little tussles.
Only negative tonight was being spun by one of the new drivers who then "forgot" to wait for me to get back on track. Hopefully they'll learn how we do it here & remember next time.

See you at Jerez next week.

So sorry Geoff, that has to be one of my worst moments in sim-racing - i was actually trying to let you past on the straight but a little dab on the brake threw me violently into your path (why..?!).

Had no time for any practice/qually tonight and should have been better prepared. Sorry again.

I wondered what you were doing! I might have missed you but it happened just at the point I glanced in the mirror, looked back down & bang. There is something not right about those 906s, or we are completely missing a trick with the setup. Hope Clive doesn't watch the replay - he'll be doing this

I was happy to steal a slice of the Porker pie in my GT40 tonight. I knew that it would be a tough battle against all those RSRs, but I made a decent job of it. I made two very careless errors at T1 (basically, my concentration wandered in the braking zone), and I temporarily entered the sand trap. Fortunately, I only lost one place in the process, and I quickly got it back. After that, it was a case of keeping Clive's Porsche a few seconds behind me until I crossed the finishing line in P6 8)

Great race that tonight with cool cars, a great track and brilliant full grid!  8)

Qually was tough with so many cars to find a space and get a clean lap but I achieved my aim of being top ten with so many aliens present.
Got my normal duff start but only lost a place to Moggets GT40 although that cost me all through sector 1 behind it for a few laps. The battle then opened into a long chase with Clive followed by one with NPP. Put pressure on both but Clive stayed stoically ahead whereas Niels cracked  ;)
Made only 1 error all race (at T1) and that allowed Clive a 5-6 sec cushion without me breathing down his neck and he maintained that until the end.
Brought the car home in 8th which considering there were 27 cars on grid and at least 6 aliens ahead of me, I'm reasonbly chuffed with!
Without the sudden influx of aliens tonight (where did all the new names appear from?!) that would have been a  podium fight  :)

Great to see a full grid and congrats to the podium finishers  8)

Only moan is certain uber quick drivers flashing their headlights in qualifying and trying to monster past when your on your own flying lap then attempting to overtake you mid apex! Causing an incident  ::)
Patience gents!!

Well...it was quite interesting race. Never before drove in a racing league with other than formula 1 car until today. :) I have installed the mod few days ago and started to prepare myself for the race. I was pleased with the car physics and sounds. Is nice to drive a car like that. :)

So i had a very good  time in the practise session 1:15.1 with race setup and i was optimistic for the race. Unfortunately in the Q session i wasn't able to concentrate properly and had issues with the sun. It was almost impossible to brake correctly for the first corner... :D . At the end of the session i was at 13 position and quite disappointing, but i knew i had better setup for the race.
At the start of the race i was able to pass 1 guy and managed to maintain the position almost until the end of the race when someone has retired, and that's how i finished at 11 place and 1 second behind my teammate Hristo Itchov and one guy between us. ( sorry but i  don't remember his name :D )
It was very nice to drive against 26 other guys. From what i see all of the guys i saw in the race were consistently driving and not making stupid attacking moves. Everyone was just waiting for his moment.
Congrats to Otto for the win!  O0

Saw a lot more of Hristo than I was expecting last night but what I really needed was for Mogget to have another "off" in his bus!

Spent most of my time keeping MJ in his place.

Brilliant drive by Ivan, which knocked John back to a supporting role for a change.  Well done gents.

Now must get that replay so that I can watch the Kerbies knocking each other out of the race!  Have to see if I can get it on Youtube.

Enjoyed the evening immensely. Fortunately managed to get out of work and didn't get the call back that I was expecting. Spent the practice session getting to grips with race fuel and was pleasantly surprised when I just put softs on, emptied the tank and managed a decent quali position (in my frame of reference). Lost a couple of spots off the start and a position within the first couple of laps after a bit of door banging with another Porker and then settled into a good rhythm for me. Although I didn't see too much opposition for the majority of the race had some good personal fun looking after the tyres and maintaining the 9-10 sec gap to phspok.

Had one tricky moment at Spoon and got in Seniordan's way getting back on track for which I apologise, let him past on the run down to R130 and then watched him slide gracefully off going into the S Curves on the next lap. Had some awesome drift moments going into the 1st Degner and finished the event with a huge smile.

Looking forward to the next trip out.

The track versions are not always chosen because they are the best looking (or driving), There are some Virtua LM tracks, Mid Ohio for example
that I am reluctant to use for championship events because even on the minimum detail level it is
almost undriveable inthe last couple of corners on a slower PC.

In this case I just chose the one I had used previously and knew to be reliable.

Is there the official race replay? Where can i find it?

Here  https://replay.simracing.org.uk/
scroll down to p&g section ...

About my (attempt to) race ... I did mistake (not for the first time) and went in garage when qualli session was finished but before "next session" ... every time I do that - I`m out because  "next session" would not load.

About championship - I`m fine whatever Matt do (if he is keen to continue) and I do like endurance or longer races rather than sprint with soft tires and low fuel so 40 minute races are just spot on (something in the middle) ... considering endurance, why not to have races where real life endurance actually was driven or happening now like Sebring, Le Mans, Nordschleiffe, Bathurst ...

My estimate of the team points for this race would be:

1st   Team 7   33
2nd   SBRC           26
3rd   WSL           10
4th   BRL             8
5th   Legends     6
6th   Oldies     4
7th   Pseudo     1

Utterly Last   Kerbies   Zilch!

This would mean that SBRC are now two points clear of the Crawlers, so you can stop this series now Matt.   ::)

I think we already have an endurance championship? I would prefer to keep these separate from any other championships, because I do not take part in really long races anymore. They are just too dodgy for my back.

I didn't mean separate endurance championship. I was thinking less races if you don`t like it but on those tracks ...
Most 40 minute races i drive one handed because of my right shoulder, and it`s one of reasons why I`m using H-shifter all the time because I can`t hold my arm high for more than few minutes even on steering wheel ... but I still love longer races.

Title: Re: UKPnG Season 8 Sports Car Series - Suzuka - Nov 14
Post by: phspok on November 17, 2013, 02:51:59 PM +0000
3.1  Sometimes I reduce the damage level a bit if I think it's going to be a particularly "physical" race
It would be inappropriate to post in advance which events get a softer damage model.
And even so engines can still take damage, I don't ever "turn it off"

Looks like it was a good idea for this one, Syd was my man of the match, he took some serious contact
from a couple of incidents, non of which was his fault, but still managed to finish.  8)

I am going to go look at the replay to see who finished where, and then ask for help to correct the results
I have no idea how to re submit results once they are in the system.

You need to use LM2/Reference Data/Entries. Here you can edit positions etc. When finished do a Generate Standings.

The last Enduro is this Thursday 21st November
The last GT will be 28th November
The last BHC will be 5th December
The last SC event will be 12th December
The last LCC will be 19th December

Then it's Christmas frivolities, and for those that can make it Tony is running his annual long distance event:

Look like I will miss it as I am in the Lakes for New year, but these have always been a great event in the past

There were 27, but the system only had 22 in it, so they were the only ones I could rearrange the order of
There doesn't seem to be an option to add drivers to the entries list after the event.
It is probably possible to delete the results and re import a corrected version but my limited
Elf skills don't know how to do that. So the 22 is all we have. It covers all the points scorers
so I'm not dedicated to digging any further.

FYI Matt: If you want to delete an event, first you have to change the event type to be "fun" from "championship". Then you can just delete it, recreate it & reimport the results. :)

Learnt that the hard way a few years back
