Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Friday Trophy - Spa - Oct 25
Post by: EvilClive on October 23, 2013, 01:15:42 PM +0100
Season 25 Friday Trophy - Rounds 25 & 26 - Spa

And on to the next round for the 40 race series that is the Friday Trophy, this time at an old favourite Spa. Again this is a relatively long circuit so space should open up, but slipstreaming might be crucial whether you are in front or behind. There are a few more challenging corners in between the long fast sections so it should still be an interesting challenge.

This should be a track where the handicap for the Lights gives the Heavies a real chance to get amongst the podium slots with their faster cars. Keeping mistakes to a minimum and using the extra pace on the long straights might cause some problems for the Lights.

This round is for the F2s and 69X.

                                Heavies                                     Lights
Cars for F2            Brab BT23 and Lotus 48,               Cooper and Ferrari
Cars for 69X          Lotus 49b and Matra MS80        Mclaren M9A and BRM P126/139

This series IS fun. First race I had a nice setup but no time to qualify. Made up about 5 places and then span at Stavelot taking an odd line to leave room. That put me all but last. but I was in a race with Dean (which I cannot say happens too often). Got to Stavelot again and span again. Blast. Didn't spin once in practice. Never mind. Quick dash to pick up my daughters and then back for 69X.

Poor qually but knew the tweaks would make me more competitive in race trim. Picked up a couple of places and was following Ronnie and Maarten. Knew tears were going to be shed soon and sure enough Maarten totalled Ronnie and although I was expecting it  I couldn't avoid a spinning RP. Got going but the engine blew which put me right out of contention but still half a mile ahead of Dave.

Bit bored lapping alone and I couldn't catch Ronnie or Bill ahead so I slowed carefully to allow Dave to reduce the gap. Sure enough he outbraked me at Stavelot where I was super cautious but I was planning to draft him on the last lap. All I needed to do was concentrate and then I could.... blast. Wheel on the grass, spin.

Ah well, Dave will wait for me... ah, no he won't :(

So lost place and no racing either - boo.  Still had fun though.

You should all try, the water is lovely.

Sorry about my spinning BRM Paul. I was getting quite dizzy but looking forward to joining battle with "THE LION OF OULTON PARK" and was gutted when you blew your engine :o

Another couple of really fun races even for Spa with thinnish numbers. Maybe a bit fortunate to come out on top in Race 1 but really enjoyed pushing as hard as I could to keep the lead and got a PB out of it for good measure without a tow.

Race 2 I was on the back foot as I have still not got the hang of setting these cars up with anything but substantial wing. Dicing mid pack me and Maarten were entertaining ourselves and Paul with our quest for the same piece of track. Just to repeat what I said in chat after the race no problem as far as I'm concerned Maarten. We both got going but as hard as I tried I could not get anywhere near the pace of yourself and Axl.

Grats to the podiums of Raoni and Clive Race 1 and Clive, Dave R and Raoni Race 2. See you all next time.

Thanks again Ronnie! Won't happen again.

With no practice at all i went into this race, but had LOADS of fun! Great fights, and very close finish. Sometimes i forget how great GPL is, and how great the people are that are still driving with it.

Thanks for letting me join,

Maarten

Probably not the best place to ask but does the Chap 2F have only 3 forward gears? In game shows 4 but driving there is only 3?  :-\

Yes Johnny!

It is exactly as you describe. 3 gears only working ;)
