Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Novices and Intermediates Trophy (65) - Bathurst - Nov 5
Post by: BadBlood on November 03, 2013, 08:16:05 PM +0000
Season 25 Novices and Intermediates Trophy - Round 7 - Bathurst/Mount Panorama

Round 7. Australia. Tricky track for fireworks night. Some VERY long straights so setup for drafting and then weep in frustration as the car in front gets away through the mountain canyons...

NB. There is ONE grid for both the Novices and the Intermediates

The Novices and Intermediate Trophies will remain sharing a grid until further notice.

In view of the relatively small grids across two championships, handicapping makes little sense so all drivers have a FREE choice of car.

Race List = IGOR
Server = UKGPL_T7
IP address = 62.149.202.168
Race date = 05-11-2013
Race Time = race starts at 21:30 UK time
Qualifying Time = Between 30 and 60 minutes, starting no later than 21:00 UK time
Track = Bathurst (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Tracks/Bathurst/panorama.zip)
Various updates to the track can also be found here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Tracks/Bathurst)
Variant = 65F1 - the 2.02 Release of the 65mod should be used
Damage Model = INT
Race length = 40 minutes (laps 18)
Password: see above (#post_event_password)
Replays Available here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_replaysS25_js.aspx)

65 Patch: The 2.02 Release of the 65mod can and should be used. You need a working installation of the 65 mod to install the 2.02 Update. All the 65 Mod files can be found here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Mods/1965)

Driver lists can be found on the Novice (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=406) and Intermediate (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R;group=407) championship standings pages.

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Intermediate drivers are limited to ONE reset. Novices have unlimited resets but EACH Shift-R MUST be followed within TWO laps by a Stop 'n' Go.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be the first lap up to and including the wiggly bit through the mountain (the Esses)! Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

May be worth mentioning the recent minus 1 hour time change to UK time for our friends overseas.

Cheers mate, I will double check the time difference before the race. We Yanks set our clocks back an hour yesterday. So she'll be apples.
I expect this race will be a challenge. I need to post a sign to my monitor saying to tip-toe over Mt Panorama. Have a good one - WC

I usually find the best way round the mountain bit is close my eyes and then count the wheels when the crashing sound stops ;)

That is probably why I can only manage 2:20 round here! Sub 2:10 is just insane!

Bleeding heck... Who's doing 2:10's? I'm currently lucky to get a 2:15, and I can't do more than one without a mistake. Interesting track, but my god I'm slow here.

Crikey, not me. I lapped at 2:14 yesterday, but my average laptime will probably be in the 2:15's.

hmmmmm. 2:10 around Bathurst....... Whenever I have been lucky enough to nail a good lap around there it is usually because I have curtailed my usual Gung-Ho style and concentrated on getting into the corners cleanly, thus allowing me to max my exit speed.

Three corners that pay dividends are:-

T1..........................easy to go in too fast and struggle to get the car hooked up for the following straight.

The esses that lead onto Conrod Straight down between the rocks..........get that wrong and you compromise your exit speed which handicaps you all the way down that looooong straight.

The final corner.................. Once again soooo easy to go in too fast and then wrestle with the car to avoid  the barriers instead of a nice smooth braking, a clean line through the apex and fast exit along the S/F straight.

In short, on any corner that leads onto a straight concentrate on going in 5% slower to gain 10-15% speed on the exit.

Of course any slipstreaming will knock a couple of seconds off if you catch cars at the right place  ;)

Indeed Clive. I can comfortably do 2:10 with a bit of slipstream, and find that losing this makes 2-4 secs difference to the lap.....

Not sure i will make it this evening....any thoughts of going to see things go bang in the sky have been kicked into touch by the need to have a late meeting. Whether I can get home in time to race remains to be seen....

2:16 is more or less where I am Boggy so we can lock wheels. That is with the BT11 but I am going to try the BRM and my trusty Whale later on so that might get me under 2:15 - but maybe not... ;)

Really disappointed- I lost control at the last turn and took Al with me -really sorry Al. I spent hours practicing this track but could not sort out my braking into the first and last turns. Which ever car I used it would swap ends...really frustrating.. I had to put bias well forward but to no avail. Grats to the podium. :(

I am really disappointed for Boggy and Tony.

Silverstone next though and there are no sticky barriers there and it is an original.

Just a quick shout out for GTL.

Raced Spa last night and it was awesome (I wasn't ;)). Looks great and the racing is really good fun. If you can fit in a Monday night it is great fun and very GPL like.

Now, back to Bathurst GPL style. Lap 1, cautious but still managed to dump it at the last turn (feel for you Johnny). That put me last but one with Walter miles back. Chased down Bill Dave and Nigel with ease and then got mugged by a mountain :( This time the chase was MUCH harder. Finally caught Nigel and managed to muscle past. We had a bit of a tangle but I was relieved to see him still running. Then Al fell into our clutches with some spinny stuff and we had a bit of a battle which ended when my engine went pop. I had led him by quite a distance and he simply reeled me in. I had to stop and I had about 800 yards on Walter but at 160mph that doesn't last long and he was soon on my tail. We swapped places a couple of times and then he hit the barrier at T1 with two laps to go. I thought I had him then but he was MUCH better out of the last turn and caught me in the mountains as well so that 150 yard lead simply evaporated. He drafted past me on the final straight and held it round the corner even though I got a better exit.

Great racing. Pity about the position ;)

Big congrats to Ivan - different class and all the other podium guys - good steady stuff.

Congrats to Ivan and the podium.

I was surprised by my quali time, I managed a mid 2:12 fairly quickly, which was by far my best time in all my practices. I didn't think I would beat that, but wanted to still learn the track, and managed to pick up a tow from Paul. I was really pleased with my 2:11 time, it was so much faster than I thought that I could manage here.

My start was OK, I managed to get ahead of Rainer into the first corner, and I think we had a little bump, but it didn't really effect me and I carried on undisturbed. Johnny had managed to get the lead, but Ivan was all over him. It was only a matter of time before Ivan got past and left us all for dead. I managed to pick up a tow from Johnny and got a run on him. I took second place and held it for a lap or two. Finally Johnny managed to get into my tow, and got past me on the straight, I gave him the inside but didn't make it easy for him, and in the end that was a mistake. He ran wide and had no where else to go apart from me.

After my stop and go I was around Paul, but ahead at this point. The red mist came down and I ended up having one of those horrible slow motion spins that you can't do anything about. I was pretty much side on, in the middle of the track, at a very narrow part. I tried to do a quick spin, but the track was too narrow. I saw on Prib that Paul was very near, so I decided that the best thing to do was stay still until he past, which seem to be OK. I got going again and started to chase Paul down. We had a good little battle until he disappeared, which I later found out was his engine going pop. after that I was on my own, unable to catch anyone ahead, and under no real pressure from behind.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to be able to make the next race, so I wish you guys luck and I'll see you in Zolder.

Seems there is a certain amount of pre-race blagging & bluffing going on, with various drivers complaining how slow they are. Turn up on race day & these guys are about 3 seconds faster than they claim.
I was under the impression that my 2.14 practice times would be quite reasonable – sadly it was very much back of the grid. On occasions a bit slower but consistent is a good formula. The speed merchants took turns to visit the scenery – although Ivan, Dave R, Rog showed why they were on the podium. My one mistake of any note was running a little wide in T1 about lap 3 which allowed Dave C to nip in front. I think we stayed in touch the whole race – which kept things interesting – but I never got close enough to use the tow.
Next up, Silverstone – usually pretty good fun & I know what the benchmark times are going to be.
As mentioned in Chat last night the Novices championship is shaping up for a tightly contested finish – although the team championship is destined for the Black Night trophy cabinet.

I promise that my off line practice time where 2:15 on a good lap, the only difference is that I tend to practice with full tanks. I don;t know if it's the added competition or just I concentrate more but I do often find I'm able to go faster in Quali that I have been off line.

I'm disappointed to be missing Silverstone, I wish you the best of luck, and I'll have to do my best to claw back the points I'm going to miss  out on.

In the days before the race, I tried several cars, setups and the advice found https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=11940.0 (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=11940.0). I found that I was quickest in the BT11 with Hristo's spring rate advice. My laptime dropped into 2:12's in my last practice race. I was quite surprised at my pace in the Qually, but it was all for not, as the start of the race was my undoing. I must have started a tenth of second too late, and I lost at least a couple of positions. I followed the Ferrari's of Happyal and J. Pennington into turn one. I made the mistake of following too close, and braking too late. I was mad at myself because I knew better than to do that.

I am sorry to Happyal (A. Baldwin65) for the bump going into turn 1 lap 1, and I am sorry to anyone else involved (I do not have a replay). I waited in the T1 runoff area for the field to pass. I could still see someone in my mirror, and I did not know if it was someone that I had taken out. My prib data had not updated yet. So I pulled over at the top of the hill and waited for a bit. I am guessing that was Tony, and he hit escape in T3. I lost my concentration, and I hit a number of unmovable barriers. I used the shift - R and s&g once. It was all very frustrating at the time, but I kept going because I did not want to lose too many points to my rivals in the Novice championship. Alas, my rivals were well and gone, but I had fun dicing with Paul for 7th place.

Thank you everyone for the race, I hope to learn from my mistakes. I am truly looking forward to the next race.
Cheers,
Walter

BTW, I hope to try out GT Legends soon. I just bought it for a really good deal. http://www.bundlestars.com/all-bundles/Superpower-Sims-Bundle/ (http://www.bundlestars.com/all-bundles/Superpower-Sims-Bundle/)

My start was OK, I managed to get ahead of Rainer into the first corner, and I think we had a little bump, but it didn't really effect me and I carried on undisturbed.

This reminded me of some of my set-up testing. I saw in a practice replay that the front of my car scraped the ground under braking for the last turn (when testing softer springs with 3 inch ride height). I do not think that would explain the situation going into turn one though.

It is difficult to know what the problem was Walter- my recent dip in form and results coincides with using my wheel and peddles online instead of the trusty gamepad so it's back to the pad for Silverstone. We raced there in the novs in season 23 with Giovannis lotus lapping in the 1.32s and my bt11 was over a second slower.

There again - will there be enough time for GTL?  What with Rig'n'Roll  & not to mention Agricultural Simulator *EXTENDED* edition?!

I must admit,  I nearly purchased GTL a few months ago (seemed only fair with the exchanges taking place).  But then realised that I hardly have enough time for multiple GPL series, let alone dipping into that too at the time.  However,  for a couple of quid - hmmm... maybe...

As for GTL not being Maddog's cup of tea - I bet there are plenty of folk that would be none too interested in driving cars that resemble insects & instead prefer something more akin to real road-going metal.  Each to their own of course!

oh -  I suppose I should have wittered on about the race last night.
I tried the track the night before with 3 cars & the 'same' setup.  Managed a mid 2:13 with BT11,  so that won out.  In fact,  it permitted me to 'beat' a couple of big-hitters on the test server;  although in reality I probably just made smaller errors.

Didn't know what to expect time-wise,  everybody else seemed too quick in qually.
Had some close running for a while with Billy & Nigel.   Maybe with a couple of slight errors, I even made a couple of overtakes!  Yay!

ok, some carnage ahead helped [looking back at the replay of the 2x Ferraris at the last turn - looked impressive from the following positions!]   but provisional 4th overall was more than acceptable - although the running was otherwise lonely out there.   At times, I seemed to be closing in on Rog & could see that speck a little larger at times,  but was too in reality too far in the distance.     I didn't really get much of a tow,  but Billy was never far behind & that was pushing me on.

Cheers chaps,
Dave.

Hi all
Totally off topic but ....question
Did anything come of the season 24 mid season review quote

 "Drivers Forum for in-season discussions

Would a forum for driver feedback be helpful? Some of the points being forcibly made are lost amongst race feedback. That makes it very difficult for us to keep track of who is saying what."

It was quite funny also because i was going to post this in the mid season review, but it said "no one has posted in this topic for over 120 days would you consider starting a new topic" Ahem WE CAN'T!!!!!!!!!!

Boggy

I don't think the ability/non-ability to start a thread is itself an issue.  More of a lighthearted clarification of using the open-mic/soapbox for constructive purposes from the community perspective :)
With (I guess - as I'm not an official!)  both positive/constructive negative feedback welcomed.  To quote Hot Fuzz, 'the greater good'  & maybe 'yarp'.

For example,  maybe the administration themselves would be well-within their rights to mention to the populous, something along the lines of that if you register in a series - then maybe we'd expect to see you at some time as that is the gauge of interest/server capacity etc.  Although - it's true that everyone has their own life outside of UKGPL (surely not?!)  & of course that will get in the way somewhat & that should not be expected to be accountable in any way.

Agree with that point Dave -and on behalf of the 'staff,' I think it strange, the number of entrants who register as full time, and don't even show up once!

While on behalf of the masses, perhaps it's time to remind our honored leader, this is a Forum - a place for both your 'whingers', and your constructive thinkers to give their opinion. :taz:  It just needs to be kept civilized.

Sorry - I will clarify. Whingeing and moaning is a time honoured tradition! Some of those conversations are hilarious.

BUT I don't particularly want a feedback forum to be somewhere that drivers can put "and that is the seventeenth time Joe Bloggs has punted me off - he really is a pillock" with Joe replying in kind...

Feel free to whinge in the post race comments! They keep you sane!
