Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Formula 2 Trophy - Vallelunga - Nov 17
Post by: Billy Nobrakes on November 14, 2013, 11:09:54 PM +0000
THIS POST IS FOR THE LIGHT & HEAVY RACES

The next round of the Formula 2 championship will be staged just outside the Italian capital at Vallelunga.  A relatively short track with some very tight turns.
Both Heavy & Lights division will run as a mixed grid. Attendance for the last couple of races have been good, but enough to fit on one track. The Championship Table can be found here F2 Trophy  (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=405&theme=6).

For this round the handicap system will apply as follows;
Ronnie Peterson – Group II = BT14, Ferrari or Cooper
Evil Clive – Group III – either Lotus, either Lola or any Group II car.
As the Heavy division is quite small & evenly contested so there are no handicaps for this race.

A maximum of one reset is allowed per race & must be followed by a compulsory Stop & Go in the pit lane within two laps of the Reset. If you Reset on the last lap & cannot take a Stop & Go a 15 second time penalty will be awarded.
Incidents should be reported in the usual way.

In line with other divisions the races will be subject to full moderation in the red zone which will be up to the exit of the Tricea turn. The Moderator may chose to investigate any other incident, in addition to reported incidents & red zone incidents.

Please note that for UKGPL has introduced a system of penalties within each series for drivers accumulating yellow cards – see here
Penalty Points (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?topic=10879.0). Drivers incurring these penalties will receive a PM advising when a penalty has been applied & what race it should served.

Didn't have this track installed and when I tried to download it tonight SRMZ was down (well my connection to it was).  Hope the race went well, sorry I couldn't make it  :(

Hard luck Phil. That must have been a very recent downtime as I managed to grab a copy of the track at around 6ish.

As for my race, I bagged my first win with the F2s  :). A lucky win, yes, but I'll take it  ;). It took me until the end of quali to really get in the groove with Vallelunga. Managed 3rd on the grid but couldn't match Piero's time for the life of me. The first 10 laps were really hard work, I had a good start and jumped to 2nd and did my best to harass Piero into a mistake as overtaking at Vallelunga was challenging to say the least. Sadly for me at least he was having none of that and after 10 laps of close persuit my concentration was beginning to wilt. A couple of poor laps followed and I lost track of Piero, while having the pleasure of Raoni driving all over my gearbox.

In this case though, as I found trying to grab the lead, Raoni couldn't find a way past my Lotus. As the race began to draw to a close I was content with another 2nd place. With about two laps to go however, Piero's Matra took one last swig of fuel and pitched him into a spin, allowing me to move into the lead, which I kept till the end of the race.

Congrats to Raoni for a fine drive, Piero for managing to recover 3rd and to all other finishers  :).

Got mangled in a bust up at T1. SnG left me last place - just starting to get warmed up  for the race when I had a screen freeze. Three consecutive F2 races where I have had DNF's with similar issues. Hope that's my share of bad luck for the season.
Welcome to Roberto & Piero in their first start - impressive times guys.

Didn't have this track installed,  but at least I was able to get hold of it late last week, ready for installation last night.
(Although Phil/others - not that it helps now of course,  looks as though the track is on UKGPL3 download area.... ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Tracks/ (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Tracks/)  )

Initial thoughts (although I know very little on the subject) were that it seems a little like a go-kart track?  Especially the 1st half lap,  which looked as though it was just inviting some serious close-quarter/hand-to-hand combat.

Well, I thought I had some good running last night.  The AI did not have a chance!

But there was clearly something different going on tonight when I joined the race server.  My 'setup'  was nowhere to be found.  Also,  there were posted times of 1:17-1:18.   I had been happy with 1:24-1:25 last night.    Once I had re-created the setup (fuel adjustment)  I was instantly able to get round in a 1:21.  hmmm....  also,  car was now actually taking off over the hump & there appeared to be a new jump on the s/f straight.   hmmm...

Admittedly,  I had managed to get some contact cleaner inside my accelerator pot this afternoon (not spiky now with random nothingness),   but surely *that* much difference.

As a result, was more than happy with 4.5 seconds quicker than last night/early this morning.  But that was still waay off the pace.

Made a bunch of places from the initial carnage.   Then had the likes of big hitters such as Mr Evil reeling me in for position,  so just tried to let them past without losing too much time.
I guess there was some issue as the cars around me disappeared one at a time.    Maybe Mr Hunt's cloaking device created some weird vortex that gobbled up the unsuspecting?

All in all,  I should be happy with 9th overall especially as I have not previously visited under similar circumstances.   From some digging,   looks as though I must have visited yesterday with a pre-'official'-release F2 driver.   One that was a created many many years ago that used trainer chassis but for race events.  Maybe I should wipe that fellow out right now...!

Anyway,  cheers all.   As is the case all too often,  got a bit lonely out there after a while.   I thought that PW had slowed at some point (again!) to let me catch up  :)    but I guess it turned out that he was having a worse time of it than I was.   It does get rather tiring when there is a seemless endless stream of lapping cars - from then on, your own drive is severely hampered.  Unlucky fella.

Cheers,
Dave.

I made my F2 guest appearance, and was greeted at the 1st corner, by friendly foe.  And at the 2nd corner, greeted again.  Having been overwhelmed by this unexpected attention, I made a rapid exit.  'Tis true, my car WAS dressed in white, so . . . Merry Christmas?

I profited from others misfortunes... had not expected to make this but got back from work at 9.15pm and dived on. I had a truly evil setup (not to be confused with my team mate's Evil setups ;)) and it was massively sensitive under braking. That meant I had to be super cautious. I also couldn't remember the track and hadn't practiced... by the time I had found the braking points (after about 9 laps  ;D) I set about putting in some storming mid 1:20's <ahem>

Still. Made it to the finish and (sort of) enjoyed it.

BTW as Dave has pointed out, always worth checking the UKGPL3 tracks. I am building up a repository for when SRMZ falls over and I believe I have all of Season 25's although I won't guarantee it.

I was 50% responsible for the T1 carnage, by that I mean I was one of the first 2 cars that touched.

Sometimes being towards the front of the grid is helpful in avoiding the congestion at T1, but not if everyone gets a storming start and there are cars behind that are faster, and the car directly in front of you on the grid is a bit slow getting under way.

I dropped the clutch as the flag fell and instantly had to take avoiding action to miss whoever was in front of me. The result was that I found myself in a 3 abreast situation approaching T1  :o :o!! I was sure that the car to my outside DID NOT expect me to be where I was and I could not turn in with the car to my inside, so I eased back and tried to drop to the inside, all the while holding my breath and hoping that the pack was not hurtling up behind.........it seems that it was!
( I did wonder if I had been the victim of an Alain Prost/Ayrton Senna scenario by certain nameless adversaries, but I know that all UKGPL'ers are gentlemen and would not stoop so low  ::)  lolol )
Once my impression of a squash ball in a washing machine was over, the leaders were well gone and so was the majority of the field along with a couple of my pistons
A swift S/R and we were underway again but a looong way behind the action at the front, especially after the SnG at the end of the first lap. Just a shame we do not have tyre stops as per F1. I could have switched to the hard compound and hoped to gain time on a clear track to pass everyone as they took a later pitstop....but that is just dreaming!!!
I set about pumping in fast laps to try and regain some places and slowly picked off cars as they made mistakes.
The problem was that I was driving too hard and several mistakes cost me the chance to get anywhere near the leaders, although I doubt I could have passed them anyway.
Ronnie in his Cooper meanwhile kept looming behind me on prib and each time I squeezed away I managed to run wide and let him back into view.
Eventually it was obvious that I was not going to catch the leaders and had to settle for 4th. So it was a case of managing the gap back to Ronnie and collecting whatever points fell my way.

Grats to the podium finishers and to Samb for his first ( of many) wins in F2.

Blue Mountain is missing, and new to most Friday Trophy-er's.  It's an excellent idea to have all these tracks, squirreled away for a rainy SRMZ day, as some folk arrive minus their wherewithall's.  :)

As we all arrived at the first corner I held my breath and for a moment thought we had all got away with it when mayhem exploded on the screen. Sorry again Clive and anyone else caught up.  As for using Prost/Senna like first corner tactics to keep you at bay , I have no time for the former and am not a huge fan of the latter for the very reason that they resorted to what some might call cheating to win. So no I did not

Grats again to Sam, Raoni and Piero.

However, I have to admit even to this day in offline mode races, I will sink to any depths to dispose of Mr Surtees!!!!
