Title: UKGPL Season 25 (2013) Works Trophy (67) - Estoril - Dec 8
Post by: Phil Thornton on December 03, 2013, 10:59:28 PM +0000
Season 25 Works Trophy, Round 10, Estoril

Welcome to the tenth and final round in the Season 25 Works Trophy.

The addition of Estoril to the UKGPL track list completes a hat trick of Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix circuits.  We have raced at Monsanto which hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix in 1959 and Porto which hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix in 1958 and 1960.  The first Grand Prix at Estoril was held in 1984 so the configuration is tailored towards the faster modern cars which should give plenty of opportunity to stretch the legs of the 67 cars and provide good chances to overtake.

The championship is almost decided with Sam Blood in a very strong position and David Rainier the only other driver with a mathematical chance of taking the title.  The racing has been very fair all season and with eight different winners in nine races it has not been dull.  The token system has again delivered an exciting season with no driver dominating the championship.  The works division is set to return in Season 26!

As always, we will run Pro Damage, so resets are not allowed.

Race List = IGOR
Server = UKGPL_GPG
IP address = 62.195.2.111
Race date = 8-12-2013
Race Time = race starts at 21:30 UK time
Qualifying Time = Between 30 and 60 minutes, starting no later than 21:00 UK time
Track = Estoril (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=1193)
Variant = 67F1
Damage Model = PRO
Race length = 50 minutes (laps 27)
Password: see above (#post_event_password)

Replays Available here (http://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/inc_replaysS25_js.aspx)

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=401&theme=6)

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to Gancho. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Works (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=401&theme=6) standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Word has it, there may also be a Privateers race at this track - no visible sign thereof, when this was typed, Saturday evening.  The track will require some learning, and it's an unusual choice.  Nice graphics, but all stop and go, and not what these cars were designed for.  It could be a long race! :P

Sorry about the server problems tonight gents.  The track wasn't loaded on the GPG server so there was some last minute shuffling around.  We didn't have a loose grid for the works so the start was a bit hectic.  Good job it was a wide track.

There was a bit of warp too which didn't help and probably contributed to my exit on lap 1 :(.  Please submit your incident reports with client replays if you have them.

Thanks for a great season, hope to see you all back for Season 26!

That was gutting. Throughout this season my internet's been pretty solid. I guess a disconnect had to happen eventually. Shame it had to happen so early in the race and not through quali.

On the positives this season's been a right treat and with help from Dave, Black Night Racing have secured the Works trophy  :).

Many thanks the mods and racers that continue to make UKGPL possible. Hope to see you all next season in the 67 brutes :).

Sorry we had a short race Phil.
The warp didn't help.  T7 isn't as good as the GPG server IMO.

Last of the finishers but only just. This track does not suit the 67 cars IMO, but that said it makes for an interesting challenge, particularly if you miss your braking several times in a row and run wide onto the gravel/grass.

I suppose it was too much to expect to get a Lotus through a whole race.....

You'll have noticed me complaining about steering wheel slippage recently. I solved that tonight, courtesy of some motorbike webbing under the wheel. That worked nicely. However, mid way through the race, my chair decided it was it's turn to **** me up, and I got the fright of my life when a screw fell out the armrest and bounced off a chair leg...

I wasn't going to let that get to me, cos I was concentrating hrad on making smooth gear changes given the Lotus' fearsome reputation for breaking down. I was pleasantly surpised to see that I was comfortably 3rd. Samb, Baab and Tristan were ahead of me early doors and I saw one of them fall off the track on L2 or 3. I knew it wasn't Baab from the pit boards. Then I came round on the S/F straight and the pitboard told me that I was P2 with Tris 12 secs behind me. Could it be a Baarf 1-2 to end the season on a high note?? Next lap Tris was 5 secs behind me so I started to smell a rat..no way he could make 7 secs on me, so it just made it all the more confusing a lap or two later when I saw Tris and Baab emerging from the grass on the exit of T1.... Don't think that threw my concentration, so I guess it was general Lotusness that caused the heart breaking pop 2 laps later......even a Baarf 2-3 would have been nice......

Anyway, I'm glad that my worst season for a while is over. Thanks to all for the racing, and especially to Phil for moderating. Congrats to....er....whoever won the series (can't see that far up the table from my lowly position). See you next season.

Bah Humbug/Merry Xmas (delete as appropriate)

Arf

I could have taken the Lotus for the last race of the season as I had enough tokens swilling around in the bank account. But as I had lost out on any chance of silverware for the season a little while back I decided to give myself a challenge and try to take a few scalps with the trusty Wazamobile.

I could not get anywhere near the times of those Lotii and Eagles in qually, some of those times were close to WR pace !!!

I was somewhere near the middle of the grid but fortunately on the inside for T1,2 and 3 which felt safer somehow  ;)

I knew that I needed a couple of laps to get the tyres warm and that the Honda would really punish that left rear tyre around the long final bend if I was tempted to push too hard, so I tagged onto the back of a leading train and tried to stay with them.
There were a few excursions ahead and I picked up a couple of places by keeping it on the grey stuff and maintaining a steady 1:49sec target pace. Once the early melee had settled and Jethro had spun and passed me and spun again I found myself running about 5th place. Then Doni tried a new line on the grass  ( it didn't work!) and I was up to 4th spot with DL's(?) Brab just visible in the distance.
The rest of the race was great fun as I kept the Honda right on the limit of my ability to control as I tried to stay ahead of Doni and his Fezza. The gap floted around thhe 100mtr mark for lap after lap and I actually thought that I might just hang on to 4th place all the way to the flag. One slightly scruffy lap allowed Doni to half the gap and I pushed just a fraction too hard into T4, the left hand hairpin, the front end just would not bite on turn in and I slid gracefully into the gravel allowing Doni to slip through.
Although I recovered quite quickly the pace of both our cars was so similar that if I pushed to close the gap my tyres started to complain and I simply lost more ground, So I trundled in a lonely 4th , but chuffed to have got the Waza home and having had a really enjoyable battle with Doni over many laps.

Grats to Tristan and the podium finishers for some VERY quick racing laps.

Looking forward to next season already  ;D

Grats to Tristan on a fine victory!  Leading 24 of 27 laps showed his prowess.

Bob certainly kept it close, though, coming up short by only 3 seconds.  Well done.

And hey!  A podium pour moi!  How 'bout that!  A measured drive on an unfamiliar circuit but as the laps reeled off, I became more comfy with it and actually have to say that I quite like the venue.  Some early gaffes...gotta work on that shortcut through the grass...cost me a few seconds and two slots but my mid-distance, found myself running unexpectedly as high as P5.  In the middle frames, I just let Team Leader, Clive, lead me around and I had no illusions about challenging him for P4.  I was looking for fellow Canadian, Dean Logan, to come charging back after a couple of offs but he did a 'Don Skogmo' mid-race to put paid to his efforts.  Reminded me of my own fate at the Dragon's Nest last season.  OUCH!

Just around 2/3 distance, Clive had that small slip in T4 that he mentioned above and I scampered by for P4.  I was quite prepared to hand it back to the TL should he close but then P4 became P3 when Arf's Lotus engine grenaded and Clive apparently had a couple of small slips to set him back a bit to end his threat.  Cruised in for the champers and a hug of the race queen!  :)

Difficult race for me, I really don t like this track.

But I could keep the final 2nd position on the championship and I have to thank Tristan for that and for his win so Baab couldn t score enough points to finish in front of me !

Congratulations to Sam & David for taking the 67 Works driver & team championships. We'll put those with the ones that Andreas won in the Privateers - so Black Night Racing make it a clean sweep.

Final moderation for Season 25 published!

Congratulations to Sam Blood on winning the UKGPL Blue Riband event, the 67 Works!  This is Sam's second championship having won the 65 Novices back in Season 16, well done Sam.  This season has been very competitive with 9 different winners over the 10 races, Ronnie Peterson is the only man to stand on the top of the podium twice this season.  A special acknowledgement must go to David Rainier who in his first season in the Works managed to claim second position in the championship and pushed Sam all the way to the final round.  David has shown that consistent driving and regular finishes is the way to build points up for the championship.

The format for Season 26 is likely to remain the same, so if you want another season of superb racing in the 67F1s keep a look out for the registration threads for Season 26.

Thanks Phil ! but like you, it was my second season with the Works (season 24, I finished only 8th).
My final second position in season25  is just a miracle because I was often, if not always, the slowest driver among Works, and miracles will not happen every year !

LOL of course you are right, I should have checked your race history ;).  Nevertheless to finish second in your second season is very impressive.

I hope so too.  Not sure when Season 26 starts but I'll have to start thinking about track selections over the Christmas break.
