May I please have a nice safe and comfy grid slot (preferably at the back) and can I have extra padding on the sides of my car, coz my ears are getting sore with all that metal banging noise against the armco!!

Where the race instruction says "join before Qualifying session", does that mean that I should be on the server before 20:25...i.e if you are there for the practice session you will OK?

I notice that there is a note about LOCAL_IP_LOBBY.TXT, can I assume that as I have joined the practice server I am OK? or do I need to go and check/rewrite software?

Last but not least..."sorry"....just thought that I would get one in the bank ready  :-\

I'll let you off then  ;)

Had a couple of laps in the fezza, nice drive and an entertaining track (fantasy I presume)  :thumbup1:

We usually start gathering around 8pm and if you've joined the practice server you are in the right place.

Having 2 Clives on track is something to look forward to  ;) Has he signed you up for the soggies yet?

You can join whenever you want up to the race start.

The server is running a practice session now, which will be reset with the race password at 19:20 UK time tommorrow (Thursday)
Not sure where that before qual thing came from. Some people will join during race session practice, some will wait until Qual.

If people join after you, you will not see them on the track until you go back to chat/garage/etc screen. You don not need to leave
the event, just leave the track when convenient and then when you go back on track you will see all the other cars.

At the race start go to the grid, if your health is very low, say less than 50% you can go back to garage and rejoin the track
and you will get a "different" health level. You will see people joining, leaving, and rejoining the grid, this is usually because
they are trying to get a better health level. Health will go down if you have a big shunt or over rev the engine.
You can only see "health" (sounds like Doom. ;D.) if you are using "XD" http://www.vitumo.de/

The LOCAL_IP_LOBBY thing is because we used to use the German pilsbiere lobby, but now we are back on the "normal"
GTR2 one.

If you can get to the server at the moment then you are good to go for the race session.

I have just been playing on the server, and with basic setups I am doing 1:39s with either Ferri 275 or 5 speed Jag
with race fuel. That will get a grid slot way towards the back, so we might keep each other company

Um yes Tudor this one is "fantasy" the next one looks like fantasy but is not !

Small additional comment to what Matt said about joining cars............

There's a setting (possibly under Multiplayer) where you can select whether cars join when you are on track or when you get back in the garage e.g. not driving.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

The plan is to just survive the race without causing myself (or anyone else) serious injury/grief. If you are doing 1:39's, then I still have a couple of seconds to find if I am going to worry you so it is a near certainty that I will be playing rearguard for you all. I found the 275 was the most comfortable to drive in default setup so I have stuck with that and fiddled around with diffs etc to improve the handling...still like a barge with a broken rudder, but quicker  ::) . The biggest difference I am having to come to terms with is the brakes..(or total lack of them) compared to what I am used to in GPL. At a rough estimate braking distances seem about double and trail braking into corners does not seem to work, at least not yet it doesn't!!

I installed the XD on PnG last night and found it invaluable in selecting the right tyres and seeing how they were surviving the abuse I was giving them.  Thus far I have not really had any problems with engine failure
( interaction with the scenery is a totally different matter!!  :() years of driving a Honda in GPL instills great respect for all those whizzy bits and their role in getting you to the flag  ;)

The family might intervene this evening ( the entertainment officer has just announced the arrival of daughter is likely  :scared:) but I am still hopeful of getting on track with you guys..fingers crossed here.

I installed the XD on PnG last night and found it invaluable

XD is great for fuel calculation and for observing tyrewear. The 'health' meassurer is less usefull IMO, it's VERY inaccurate. Sometimes it will indicate say 5% health! and you can't actually feel the difference

1st race in PnG..... and the first time on track with REAL drivers. I tried to stay out of the way of any car that looked faster than me.....which meant just about everyone!

It might have been better, but an "off" and a random test of the armco seemed to have rearranged something important under the car and what little directional stability I had vanished lol. I struggled on for a few laps, but eventually the lack of directional control caused further incidents and even more damage to the scenery until the poor car refused to go any further! ::).

Grats to the  podium places and all finishers. I need more practice with these beasts..but not tonight !!  cyall next time guys...if you will have me?

Results and Replay Posted
Was fun until the tyres started wearing and I was wandering off track too often.
Maybe with some faster cars it will not be possible to got flat all the way down the hill

My jag was only just able to take that flat. If you didn't get the right-hand kink just right, then you did the steep section either sideways or slowly rotating clockwise!

Sorry to Geoffers for the nudge at the start but I expected you to actually move when the lights went green.  Trying to avoid your Jag messed up my start and I was suddenly drowning in Ferraris!

So did I! ::) It was only when you bumped me from behind that I realised I had my foot on the brake  Race got worse after that, I don't know if the bump had damaged the car but I just could not get on the power out of the corners without the car wanting to swap ends. After the third spin at the final turn I gave up & went & got a beer!  ;D

That is interesting Clive.
I know you had the Jag and I was in the Fez, but from the tight left hander at the top (2nd gear for me) I was on max throttle all the way down the hill..no lifting except for the upshifts. It meant that I just hit the red line in 5th gear before I had to brake for that horrible right/ left combo at the bottom of the hill.  Maybe my final drive was too low?
That right hander at the bottom of the hill was my nemesis on this track. When I got the braking and downshifts right, it was easy...but that did not happen often enough!. Plus dropping a wheel onto the ( obviously very wet grass!) anywhere before the braking point, did not improve one's chances of successfully negotiating any of those corners. This was usually as a result of looking in the mirror and not concentrating on the road!!!

I think my best lap in offline praccy was a low 1:39, still 3+ secs off the pace of the fast boys. But I made  the mistake of competing in qualifying, and trying too hard instead of aiming to be last on the grid and picking up the pace slowly. I found myself on the grid surrounded by cars and forced to get going or cause a problem  :-\ for those behind me. My biggest problems are still the braking distances and getting the thing pointing the way I want it, when I want it. There almost seems to be a half second delay between applying steering lock and the car actually turning, is that how you guys find it or could it be the way I have the controls set up?

Biggest plus for me was getting the tyre choice right, something that is not an option in GPL. Although I did not complete the whole race I had a steady green for all the laps I did, and it looked like the tyre wear rate would have kept them healthy until the end.

I enjoyed the challenge of something different and will be back for more.

Nice flow to the track but not the best for racing imho. Very difficult to pass unless you wanted to be rude having a lunge into one of the corners. Had a good chase with Clive, but never really had an opportunity to pass until he ran wide allowing me through.

I then made a couple of errors and decided to call it a night as I had a headache after a busy day.

Think I might have to invest in a new wheel soon as my trusty dfgt has developed a bit of a worrying wobble at the centre  :(

Some of the cars have wooden brakes, some actually stop quite well - Alpine Renault for e.g
I'm not aware of any particular steering delay compared to GPL there are old threads on here
mostly from Matteo Santini about how to set up your wheel, particularly G25/7 if you want to search

I used 184s for tyres on the 275 and even they wore quite a bit before the end.
use the built in tyre guide to see which are harder, generally the furthest left is soft
and right is harder, but ignore the Intermediates and wets, they are from the original GTR2
and are not appropriate for P&G.

That sounds about right, to be honest. Can you feel any body roll happening during this delay? I find it doesn't really start to change direction until it's nicely 'leaned in', so have to work with the roll and get it set up really early for the corners. All part of the fun ;D Might be worth taking something small like the Lotus 7 or the Abarth out for a spin to see if the same thing happens.

Nice to see a new PnG face, by the way :thumbup1:

Post by: EvilClive on January 03, 2014, 04:20:48 PM +0000
Yes John, what you describe is exactly what I felt was happening. Phew! that is a relief!!  ;)

I found that I have to anticipate the corner ahead and turn in ( what seems to be) far too early, allow for the body to roll and the outside tyres begin to grip, then apply the gas through the apex as I unwind the lock to prevent the tail end from slithering around and parking me either on the grass or stuffed into the armco. I found that going down the hill I was aiming at a point some 2mtrs inside the apex of that fast left hander and the natural delay and understeer clipped the rumble strip and took me through the corner on full welly.

All this PnG is new to me so I have only tried the cars for last nights race and have just done a few laps around that exacting circuit, Specific Raceways, in the Cobra. Incidentally I found the Cobra more responsive on the front end than either the E-type or the Fez 275 was.

BTW I am used to brake balances of around 50/50 in GPL, what are you guys using?

Yes to the preemting the turn in, some cars more than others. The Jag and the Big Yanks are very much that way
the smaller cars tend to turn in quicker. Try an Escort or 911 variant. They should feel somewhat different.

I tend to put the brakes as much to the rear as possible without making it unstable, to help the car turn in. Some cars it gets down towards 50/50 but in most cars it is around 55/45. I think in the Jag I was using 53/47.

I assumed that it was because Evil had rustled up a load of newbie questions and the sticky would ensure that the next victim could find them.
