Title: UKGPL Season 26 (2014) Friday Trophy - Lime Rock - Feb 7
Post by: EvilClive on January 25, 2014, 10:56:08 AM +0000
Now for the GT's and Can Ams around this tight little track, which should present a unique challenge and require some very delicate pressure on the gas pedal.

Please try and be considerate when lapping or being lapped as this is sure to happen on such a short track, but it will ensure that there are very few dull moments for anyone.

Once again the Lights have a restriction in their car options and I fully expect that they will have to work hard to claim any silverware.

A single Shift R is allowed but no SnG is required.

It is difficult to overtake at Lime Rock, but not impossible. The video is for inspiration.

Nice video Walter but...in GPL I don't suggest you to try such things similar to those we've seen in the video.  :P ;D

[size=14pt]PLEASE NOTE A CHANGE TO THE CARS FOR THE LIGHTS FOR THE GT RACE .
APOLOGIES, BUT ENTIRELY MY FAULT FOR OFFERING POTENTIALLY THE BEST CAR TO THE LIGHTS!! THE PORKER SHOULD BE MAGIC AROUND THIS TRACK FOR THE HEAVIES AND OFFER THEM A REAL CHANCE

Thanks for letting us know while there's still time to prepare. I thought the 910 was a very nice choice to give the Lights on a tight course like this. There is one thing I'd like to ask. Would you please keep the Lights' choice of cars the same through the season? I was hoping to drive this season using one (the same) car for each mod. My lack of experience and limited talent make it difficult for me to swap back and forth between cars. I also don't have the time to prepare as well as I'd like. I'm still at the point that 90% of the laps I've driven in the 65, 67, 69, and GT cars, are in one car. I'd hate to drive the 2D for this race and then not be able use it later.

Whatever happens, I'll stick with it but next season I'm not going to race in more than two Series.

I must have still been full of Christmas goodwill and generosity when I posted that the Porker would be available to the Lights. Either that or someone had spiked my bedtime cocoa!!  :-\
The Porsche has to be just about the best handling car across the whole spectrum of mods in GPL. It might lack a little in top speed but it will more than make up for that by the speed it can carry through corners and it's late braking ability.

...My lack of experience and limited talent...

Are a perfectly valid reason to run as a Heavy in this championship, until you're more familiar? If you start running away with poles and wins that are more due to the car than the driver, self-handicapping is never out of the question.

Just a suggestion.

I also don't have the time to prepare as well as I'd like.

I saw this link for JR's GT set-ups in a previous race announcement. http://www.sendspace.com/file/p0x0hw (http://www.sendspace.com/file/p0x0hw) I have used them myself, and it helps save a little time.  :)

It might lack a little in top speed

A little?  It's like 50mph slower than the Mk4!

...neither the Ford GT - Mk1 for lights ? The 910 is way better performing in a track so short like at Lime Rock anyway there could be close fights between the Mk1's and the 910's drivers...at least for me !

I didn't understand a thing...the heavies have fast cars but all decided to use slow cars instead, also if there were much better cars...the problem is...nobody wanna prepare the race at best !  :P ::) :-\

The porsche 910 was the best GT's car by far but...there was only one ! It was a Chaparral 2D festival but that car is not simple to manage, I would have preferred  much more the Porsche 910 but also the Ford Mk1 it would have been nice to drive  the Ford Mk2B or the Lola T70.

At this point the handicap system is useless also if I agree with it.

P.S.: backmarkers play a key role in every race...damn...it is not so difficult to understand that each one have to stay out of the racing line in the imminence of being lapped.

I do agree that the car choice was perhaps not the best this time around, it was much better last time, at least with the 69x's. I also can't seem to get to grips with the Ferrari 712 too well, although I think I set it up a bit too stiff. Also agree about the backmarkers although I understand the more limited visibility and nature of the track made it harder to get out of the way.

Zero practice so quali was spent creating a setup and getting the gears right. Got a f/l in race 1 and a pole in race 2, but lacked consistency a bit due to lack of practice. Let's hope my Nürburgring Graduates race is better!

Not much more to say really. I'm more of an open wheel kind of guy, somehow I can't seem to get as much enjoyment out of these cars as I get out of the cars in our open wheeled mods. Although I have to say the CanAm cars look very pleasing to the eye!

 :) :)
Big fun again !

Congratulations to winners, podium ones and all take part !

Chap2D festival:
Spun by my own 2 times. 1 time got  rear end shunt at T1 and funny thing, my heavy Chap once got circled by an light Porsche. No prop so , just surprised it could be possible.

Well imo GTmod programming needs to be work over. There is an dramatic delay between what is shown on the screen and what is calculated on the physics: once ya stabilized the car after an driving error and car looks save again as well tyre temps and speed of course extreme slow ( ec 70kmh) and ya start to accelerate smooth to came back to race speed , mostly the car starts to jump/swim right left till its gone.

CanAm:
Really like that mod , cars are great/direct on the throttle, steering input is well..etc.

Thrilling moment at 2nd last lap after exit of last turn. G.T. regain track from right green , crossed over directly to the speed line… would have been an deathly mistake in real.

Note : virtual mirrors for Gts and for CanAm ( including  Ferrari 712 ! ).

edit: looks like these rapidshare stuff is new and leads to unwanted commercials .
If someone could give me an hint for a better solution to upload files, it would be great . thx

I had fun in each race, but I lost a lot of time after doing a half spin in each race. I have virtual mirrors for the GT mod, but not the Can Am yet (It will be nice to try out). I had some misfortune in the Can-Am race. I accidently touched the keyboard during race, and I lost the sound. I pulled over to investigate. I hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, and task manager showed that a "Windows help" program opened. The sound came back on after I closed it. I rejoined the race. Then later I accidently touched the keyboard again, and my view changed to a different car! I retired from the race as fast as I could. I am sorry for that. I hope that my car was not blocking the track. I will check the replay and make apologies if necessary.

I had a lot of fun - the opening lap with like 6 or 7 Chap 2Ds together was so loud I couldn't hear my own engine!  Stuck to Sergio and waited for him to make a mistake, but he didn't.  Grats Sergio.

CanAm race was great- Tom looked to be struggling a little which gave me a chance to get by and then charge to the end.  One thing I'd like to say to the slower drivers is that you shouldn't feel you have to have to dive off onto the grass and ruin your own race to let people past.

I was one of the drivers that drove into the grass to get out of the way. It was only because I was two laps down to my nearest competitor at the time, and was having computer trouble, etc. Good race anyway, I had loads of fun.

Thx Mark the same thing from my point of view about your CanAm's race but...from a little bit farther  :)

I unfortunately can say two things not very good about two drivers of ours:

1) Molteni is a danger for all, he absolutely don't know where and when to give free way to the drivers who are trying to lap him, and worst of all is his presumption to fight with them also when he is 2 or 3 seconds per lap slower !!!

2) Martin Hunt is a strange driver also (at least from my point of view). He blew his engine and instead to immediately stop and reset along the straight, he decided to delay to stop untill he was at the apex of the Uphill turn, one of the harder handers just in the moment the lapping drivers were arriving (me)...and the result has been that...I've hit the external armco in that hander fortunately without any damage otherwise I could have lost the race.

For the rest it has been a very good friday, nice races, nice drivers and thx to Mark Jones that more than once decided to leave not his footprint on my Chaparral ;-)

I'm happier to have finished second on your list, Sergio, but not very happy.  I had not intended to slide back off the grass. :-\

On a racetrack, you have to expect the unexpected.  Nothing is certain - for many, that is a part of the appeal.

These cars were a challenge on a tight track, and not all of us were glory bound.  I hope the spirit of this fun series remains - I'll try to show a little more care.

In Sicily we say: "speak clear is a sign of friendship!".
I know every track is a risk but...when something is going wrong...press on the brakes as soon as you can and...leave the way to the others or press the esc button if nothing else can help but absolutely do not become a mobile chicane !

Uhm...you said I have to expect the unexpected, ok next time I'll expect to be hit by a meteor !  ;) ;D

Anyway...take my words with a smile in your mouth Martin but...you have to hope that I will not take your place next time !  ::) ;)

[Sorry for editing after Rainier's post]

Beware, if you're leaving near the Etna, not a meteor but some vulcanic stones :)

By the way I was also pushed out of the track on the first corner by a Chap2F driven by Mr Martin ;)

LOL

The Etna is 60km North of Siracusa ! It is simpler that a meteor can be the problem !

P.S.: to the heavies should be forbidden to take the cars for lights !

I thought the idea of essentially giving the (us!) heavies a different car,   was to act in a similar way to sticking big 'L'  plates  on the car, warning of a learner  :)

Which is why I obliged in taking the Porsche 910.  Although, it was a toss-up between that & the Ferrari in which I had been marginally quicker with some limited practice.  However,  reckoned that with all the twisty bits,  maybe the white thing would leave the track less often.

Not looked over the replays yet,  but will do at some point.   But I hope I'm right in thinking that due to the nature of open-wheelers;  even some minor bumping is not permitted as downright dangerous.  However, with the closed-wheeled vehicles,  it's more acceptable - as any touring car event shows ;)      [Note:  I do not necessarily agree with this. Any contact real or implied was purely coincidental & not intended]

Anyway, thanks for the letting me loose on such a short track at the same time as the more accomplished,  in the name of fun.
Sticking some learner in a car with a big engine does not automatically over-level the field;  although gives some glimmers of hope at times :)

Cheers,
Dave.

I suggest you to take a look at gplrank. The p 910 has the best laptime so I was expecting a porsche festival. Instead it was not. And more, the p 910 is the easiest car to drive, the lightest, good acceleration, only top speed is bad, in other words, the best car for limerock, but it needs some practice to get the best performances. Very few have understood this. Pity !

I was also amazed that all of the Heavies did not take the Porker.

I think if it had been available to the Lights we would have had a Porsche fest!!! instead of the Heavy Metal tribute act with wall to wall 2D's  :o.
My decision to try the Mk4 was perhaps not likely to result in success, but I had some enjoyable racing at the rear of the field whilst trying to wrestle that Ford tank around such a tight track.

Sergio is right about the 910 and maybe we should provide some setups for the Heavies to try? Because the 910 is so stable and predictable you really can squeeze every last bit of performance from it and it still sticks like glue.

I did take the Porker option in Can Ams and once I had got used to the handling I was able to throw it around Lime Rock and chase some of those Fezzas, which was great fun.

I find it difficult to get the time to practice for these races and take them very much as fun events, so I turn up and use an old setup from a similar track or quickly tweak the default. I cannot expect to compete at the front with this lack of preparation, but I still have fun on  Friday evening  ;D

Happy to see the Evil one not depointed after our bump.  I did not spin until nudged, but did slow dramatically while curbing my speed.  De-evilisation requires a warning period.

Incident with Dave has concluded without notification to me, it was under scrutiny.  This is the 2nd time this Season, I've been unaware of such proceedings.  Both times it's been a Moderator who has failed to do the decent thing.   No penalty issued each time, so no cause for alarm . . . . yet. :P

Sounds like an honest mistake then David. :)  When filling out the accident report, you need to click on the name of other drivers involved, to notify them about the report.  Training camp for moderators, may need a revamp.

If you don't report it yourself you risk not knowing about it if the reporter gets it wrong. Always happy to mod what is reported and indeed, we rely on drivers to do so if they want a third party view.
