No wonder I had setups for all the cars for this one. We did exately  the same combo last year :-))

Yep, another of my cunning plans to minimize testing is discovered  ::)
I had a vague notion that I had changed "something", Perhaps not...
The Alfa-SA is now a much more useful option than last year's v3.0 one so that might
change the car choice for some.

Ssssh...it was top secret  ;). Actually as soon as I left the pits I remembered I already knew this track well and had a great result at it last time  :). Wasn't that long ago we raced here really. I often get an early half hour sesh in early in the week then never get near it again until race night  ::)

Yeah, and he is going round in record braking pace too! Everybody hold tight and follow the sideways 911!

I hope to  be able to join you tomorrow as my wheel is giving the ghost. Shiftpedal is hanging, so it changes down two gears at once.  >:(Changed it to be the upshift instead of down, but that is quite hard after doing it the other way around for the last 10 years :P
Well, at least i have a legit reason to tell my wife i need a new wheel!

Shiftpedal is hanging, so it changes down two gears at once.  >:

A new limit switch would do the trick but do I not recall that the double hit can be filtered out if you map the flappy paddle to say "[" on the keyboard and then make "[" the down shift?  The theory being that it then invokes the keyboard's filtering of double hits.

Or maybe I'm talking complete rowlocks.   ;D

28th Feb is when we ran this event last year, perhaps we used the track for something else?
But I think you must have a long memory MJ  ;D
I am simply repeating some of the more successful events from last year, usually they will be at much the same date
2013 so they are not too "fresh"  :chef:

Jeebers H, was it really a year ago?! its still fresh in my memory (a feat unheard of!) so was convinced it was only something like a few months ago  :o probably stood out as I raced up near the front for a change  ;D

I'm going with the Alfa 1300 WB for this race. Judging by last years laptimes it isn't too far off the pace, although I'm sure the front of the grid will be considerably faster.  :o

Interresting choice, and I'm sure you can still go faster than the likes of me :-))

I tried the SA as well as the 1300WB last night. I actually went quicker in the SA even though my setup was way off & it was all over the place in the corners. Ran out of time to do any more tweeks. So it is probably ultimately a good 1-1.5s a lap quicker in my hands & probably over 2s faster for the aliens Italians.
I'm expecting to be nearly 2 laps behind at the end.

Sorry Clive, didn't mean that to be a divebomb - missed the same braking point there as well

Fell foul of one of this tracks shody bits, cheers for trying to help me out Bob, sorry it ended your race as well once you were stuck in the same quick sand :(
Shame, I actually had decent race pace here too

Mmm, really had a blast in the 911, thanks to the great setup from MJ.

Unfortunately i downshifted onto the straight, which blew up the engine :(  I had to reverse my flappy pedals as the downshifter was doing doubles from time to time. I had no problems in practice or qualy with the reversed gear changing, racing seems a whole different cookie ::) I will get it right next time.
Sorry MJ, not doing the team tally any good with this action. I guess a pay raise is out of the question atm?...

Apology Federico for the bump lap 1. I actually braked very early there, but you and John had contact and sliding slightly and i don't think i could then avoid you. Not your fault at all, and I'm sorry your race ended in the quicksand.

After those early shenanigans John and Clive got ahead, but John outbraked himself at the hairpin and i then squeezed past Clive a couple of laps later. Much easier driving in clear air and i could open up a gap and try and chase Giuseppe. Chipped away at his advantage here and there, but then a spin at the hairpin set me further back again. Just cruised to the finish after that.

Fun race, congrats Giuseppe.

Good fun in the 1300WB, spent most of the race chasing the battle between Dan & MJ about 3-4s behind. Got interesting in the last few laps when MJ went off at Gerards & I caught up with Dan. Unfortunately I then ran a little wide at the Esses & clattered the barrier & Dan managed to tip his car over at the Hairpin. Car had steering damage after my excursion so was a couple of seconds off the pace the last 4-5 laps but had enough of a gap over Matt to hang on to 5th place.

Congrats to Giuseppe, Frex & Clive.

Just a general comment on the GTA-SA Alfa, I think the P&G team have made the car faster than it actually was in its day. It was never very much quicker than the standard GTA & certainly no where near as quick as the 2000GTAm. Even at Spa with its long straights it was 15s a lap slower than the GTAm & even the 1972 1300 was able to match the laptimes the SA had achieved at Spa.

Another race and a little more knowledge...which could prove dangerous in these hands.  ::) grats to those podium peoples who manage to extract great pace from these cars.

Although Guiseppe had been kind enough to offer his SA setup, ( thankyou for that) I found that my overweight right foot was just creaming that front left tyre in about 2 laps, although I was close to a dead 51sec lap pace for those few glorious moments. I need to concentrate on some smooother punishment for the tyres and up the thrashing of the mechanicals if I am going to improve I think.
I had tried the Escort 4 speed in practice, which was a solid 53 sec ( with occasional 52 secs when I pulled it all together). But eventually I opted for the 1750 Alfa simply because with only minor tweaks it was extremely stable and responsive for me and I felt it offered the best chance of completing the race.

The early laps were fun, if a little congested at times, until a Porker exploded ahead and showered us all with conrods and pistons. You should know by now that these things need stabbing with a fork prior to use!!! ::)
As the field began to spread out things got a little easier until I noticed that I had been a little too exuberant in the early laps and my front tyres were not looking too good. The rest of the race was an exercise in tyre wear management and damage limitation. I had to ease off on the corners and braking to keep at least some rubber on the rims and when Phspock closed in with his Escort I could only offer a token resistance  :-\.
I picked up places as others retired or played in the sand at the Esses and really felt sorry for Dan who was stuck at the hairpin, but I held on to 7th spot and the warm glow of finishing with a minimum of rubber left on the front left... and apparently almost non existant brakes  ;)

I quite agree with Geoffers on this and I think we might consider  leaving the GTA-SA out of further competition as the car's performance isn't historically correct.

As for my race: Mark is a very cautious starter :sleep1: so he sort of granted me a spot before turn 1 where Postal ran a bit wide giving me another. Lap one usually provides some drama amongst the ranks and so I unexpectedly found myself in 4th position by the end of it. Not for long though as it didn't take John very Long to be on my tail and I thought it wise to flash him by as I was sure he would have outbraked me or passed on the outside at some point anyway. By this time Mark had thrown off his usual start drowsiness and decided to up the pace a bit and open the chase. He was quicker on the lap but by balancing on the edge of what's fair I could hold him off for a number of laps while a voice in my head kept yelling he was going to get me anyway which he did masterfully in the hairpin. Great move. I have to admit there was a faint smile :jumpjoy: when I saw he had spun a few laps later. It's one of my character flaws .
A combination of age :wheelchair: and talent make it hard to keep up the pace for a full length race and I knew that when I saw Geoffers getting closer lap by lap in his 1300 !! GTA ,I was likely to lose another position. The thought of being humiliated by a 1300 was unbearable so I tipped the car over in the hairpin. A worthy retirement, I'd say.

All in all a very enjoyable evening with great racing friends. Thanks everyone and congrats to all survivors, especially those who managed to claim a podium position :winkiss:.

Cheers, Dan

It's a dilema for me. Do I follow historical correctness or do I take advantage of the fact that the -SA
is sometimes the only Alfa that can run with the escorts and win, whereas before the Alfas were
not really worth including as very few people took them.

I think that the SA was a good match for the Porsche 2.5.

Exactly, I was glad of the new one as it gives me more cars that can run together.
I am never quite sure which escort is the best match for it, the TC-16v works
but if I run the slower RS1600s they seem a bit too fast for the 911-2.5

Oh don't get me wrong guys, I've nothing against using the Alfa SA, I was just commenting that I think the GTLW guys have got the performance of the car a bit wrong.
