Title: UKGPL Season 26 (2014) Works Trophy (67) - Zeltweg - Feb 23
Post by: Phil Thornton on February 20, 2014, 11:14:07 PM +0000
Season 26 Works Trophy - Round 4 - Zeltweg

Originally built in 1969 to replace the bland and bumpy Zeltweg Airfield circuit, the Österreichring track was known for being very fast, as every corner was a fast sweeper and taken in no lower than 3rd gear in a 5-speed gearbox and 4th in a 6-speed gearbox.  There are also noticeable changes in elevation during the course of a lap which means the downhill sections are even faster. Like most fast circuits it was a hard circuit on engines and even harder on tyres simply because the speeds were so consistently high.

For Season 26, all drivers must complete at least 50% of race distance to be classified.

Driver lists can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=427&theme=6)

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to Schikane. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Works (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=427&theme=6) standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Well, I made it as far as half way around T1.................. :-\

There was a lot of warping/lag as we left the grid and I was focused on not being too close to anybody until things settled down. But, I got punted off at T1 along with a couple of others.

It seems that we are going through a series of bad internet connections lately, and the 67's would be the least likely to suffer I thought as the "lightest" loading on the PC's?

God darn freeze in the second lap while leading!! I thought this version was supposed to be stable! I'm going to sit in a corner and cry now... Think my champ is now definately down the drain

[EDIT] Dust has settled, I now know why this rotten luck came over me. I'll start a petition removing starting number 13 from the race server

Verey car disappeared around me as I came up to T1. I pulled left and slowed down as I'd no idea where everyone was. When you all reappeared carnage was already in progress, and I was very surprised to get up to P5 by L2. I was trying an experiment using Prib, and I won't be doing that again, as I spent too much time looking at it, and cocked up my entrance to the final turn, and took a wheel off....

Lots of cars disappearing for everyone it seems at the start of lap1! Anyway I survived.

Great scrap Andreas, sorry I took myself out and ended our fun. Good luck to you and everyone else still running.

Screen freeze on the last lap put paid to me seeing the chequered flag, but according to the results I finished 4th!

Well, an anti-climax for me, at least.

Just got home in time for the race, did a lap in Q to check I could run the track with Wilke's Osterreichring setup, and then put the mirrors down to 'cars & track' to be safe. Then, at the start, stutterfest began - I should have put track objects on 'many'. Got going once the field was gone, and my aim was to make 14 laps - which I could have done, except for two stutter hits, that led to a spin and lastly a lost tyre. Managed one more lap with 3 wheels, to make 8 laps, but as the field came to lap me (and it was hectic to let Attilio past on the straight), I went off behind the barrier into the double left. I've never been fast here, but after the leading guys were out early, there was a chance to get a decent points haul.

Well done to the points finishers and podium!

Congratulations Attilio and Dean. Very nice job! It looks like it was a rather lonely race for Attilio.

I'm very pleased and surprised to have gotten such a good finish. I thought there might be some attrition, but wasn't expecting to gain so much from it. The Tortoise strikes again!

Qualifying went decent. I wanted to get in the 1:45's but my PB wouldn't have gained me a position. I was worried I might fall further in the field if I didn't lower my time though.

I threaded the needle after the turn 1 melee. I thought Arf was inside of me but I wanted to move right to assure I wouldn't hit any of the cars bouncing off the guardrail. Luckily we gave each other just enough room. Thanks Arf! That Honda power worked as I hoped it would too. I outran Arf down the back straight. I could have took a run at Dean once or twice but I knew it was a stupid move so early in the race. I knew the Honda would hold off the 312s and BT24s down the straights unlike the Cooper. I didn't actually think about it passing Coopers on the straights. I've gotten tired of watching Ferraris and Brabhams leaving me behind on the straights when I'm in the Cooper. I was going to drive the Cooper. I actually liked the way the Honda drove at Zeltweg better after testing it Saturday. I worried about the engine but in my only full Grand Prix offline at Monza in the Honda, I finished. So I thought I might make it to the end today.

My pace in the race was slower than I had expected. I thought I'd run in the 1:46's a lot but I only did once. I drove as fast as the Honda was easily willing to go. I took pretty good care of the car. I missed a few shifts, ran wide in the grass a few times at turn 1, and stayed cautious entering the Bosch Kurve throughout the race. I had a couple of moments entering the Schikane and the Rindt Kurve where I thought I was going to spin. I also struggled with turn 1 until the second half of the race. Other than that it was a very clean race for me. Jethro kept me a bit worried. He was there to capitalize on any mistake I might make. Dean struggled at times dropping back into my view. I tried to push real hard after one of his mistakes, only to go slower. It wasn't until the last two laps that I finally felt relaxed.

I can't believe I'm leading now! I can't believe I finished 3rd in a Honda against so many fast drivers! Please don't wake me. A lot of good luck, consistency, and some half decent driving has paid nice dividends.

Thanks guys! I appreciate you letting me race with you.

Congratulations to Art for a run-away win!  After Tommie, Evil and Tristan came to grief, it must have been boring up there.  :)

Fine run by Dean to score P2.  He and I swapped about a number of times in a thriller.  That was fun.

Great drive by Greg in the BIG Honda.  Never far behind Dean and I, he brought it home in P3.  And I note, too, that he currently tops the leader board in the title chase.  Great stuff there, GT!

Jethro, too, had a good outing in the BRM to score a handy P4.  Well done.

The start went off well but major doings in T1.  On the run up the hill, I had Robert in the Honda on my left but I eased out of the throttle way early to give him plenty of space to take the position uncontested.  As we arced through T1, I saw up on the left some drama going down involving a Ferrari and Evil's Eagle.  I tried to stay low but drifted up slightly towards mid-track.  Robert was still on my left and in possibly reacting to the shunt up ahead, may have turned down to the right fractionally.  The replays don't categorically indicate contact but he certainly came off the worse for it as his Honda looped to the outside and collected the other crashed cars.  Apologies if I took your bit of road there, Robert.

After the dust settled, I found myself in P3 dicing with Dean's BT24 and we had a fine old time.  I'd say he was marginally quicker with a special advantage getting off Doctor Tiroch that had him gunning me down a couple of times on the back straight.  One pass in particular was really keen ending up as a classic give 'n go.

My drive was something less than perfect with an off in T1 that yielded P2 to Dean at one point and a short turn in the grass on the outfield on Doctor Tiroch that ate up a few seconds and gave Dean a good shot at overhauling me.

Comes Lap21 and with about a half dozen seconds in hand over Dean, I dipped into the Bosch Kurve.  Sadly, I'd lost my bearings on the differential between the roadway, the grass verge and the stout stone wall on the outfield.  I kissed the wall which propelled me across the road into the barrier opposite.  Spinning wildly and with all manner of expensive sounds going on, the car righted itself in the proper direction and I proceeded just inches ahead of Dean.  It soon became apparent that I'd suffered some pretty nasty damage to the engine and first Dean then Greg breezed by with ease.  Only managed another half lap before it gave up entirely.

I mentioned above that I lost my place on entering the Bosch Kurve.  The track mip and grass mip I currently have loaded just don't provide enough contrast for me to accurately place a car with repetition.  I have considerable difficulty with Doctor Tiroch for the same reason.  It's all to easy there to go in too deep not realizing it.  I'm going to change those mips for future runs here.

I curse these eyeballs sometimes.  In our race today, things started to get a little foggy from about Lap08 onwards.  Very hard to focus.  Comes the end of March, they'll have a combined total of 130 man-years worth of wear and tear on them and they just don't work as well as they used to.  Now that I think of it, a lot of things don't perform as they once did.

Iestyn, you were buzzing around pretty quickly to be on three wheels! When I saw you go on the grass at T1 I thought that was the silliest place where someone could let me past, didn't realise they were driving an incomplete car  ;D ;D. Anyway, that just exemplifies another drawback of this 50% rule, people being forced to plod around with broken machineries just to get to a certain lap doesn't sound like something you want to have in a league race. How much better would it be to have a short points scoring spread: quick and consistent, you lead; quick and crash, zero or peanuts points; quickish and consistent, with an outside chance of fighting for the championship; slow and consistent, it is just not enough...Sometimes I think we overcomplicate things for no reason.

Anyway, I noticed this was my 100th race in UKGPL, a celebratory hat-trick is not bad at all, although yes, let's say it wasn't a thriller. When Tom passed me at the start and I realised the other quick cars had hit trouble, I thought I would tuck behind the twin Ferrari saving my engine and waiting for my chance. When Tom vanished into thin air on L2, preserving the engine became the only real concern, as in my Ferrari I could easily gap the two brabs behind me just by cruising, and that's pretty much all I did for 45 mins. Could have been more fun, but I needed a good result and this one brings me right back into contention for the champ. Grats to podium and finishers, commiserations to the others, especially to the ones whos demise was more or less directly related to internet issues, always very annoying. Thanks for the racing, see you soon.

I'm going to jump in here to agree with our race winner.  There used to to be consultation at Ukgpl, before such changes were made.  Voices may be needed if this is going to be fixed.  Don't be surprised if you next see a sign at the pit exit saying, "Drive carefully!"  ;D

That's exactly what happened. Not your fault, Doni, I hoped you would back out...my initially reaction was to the spinning cars ahead, easing off and going to the right slightly...car was too bent to continue safely...

Congrats to Attillio and podium! ;)

Fine run by Dean to score P2.  He and I swapped about a number of times in a thriller.  That was fun.

You and Dean did have a good race going with each other. I think that's the only reason I was able to stay close for the first several laps. Every time one of you ran a clean lap I'd lose about a second.

That was a shame! I thought Dean hit the rock wall there too at one point but he just slid very wide through Bosch. Nice save Dean! You had a podium finish easily Doni had you kept it together. I had no way to challenge you for position. I'm glad you got some points and got some good driving time. Looks like you had a half decent weekend with some good seat time.

That's not good. I'm starting to suffer from it some myself. I had a couple wrecks practicing Friday night because of eye strain. I wish I had been here since the beginning. I've been driving on the computer in some form for 20 years now. At 45, I've noticed my eyes aren't as good as they were at 35. My reflexes are a little slower. And most troubling is sometimes I lose all my mental focus. I definitely don't have nerves of steel anymore. I'll go flying by a brake marker occasionally not even realizing it until I'm 100m past. I find it very impressive how fast some of the guys a good bit older than me are. At 55, I'll likely have to drive with the Privateers if I can still see and concentrate. I miss getting on a good roll where I can do nothing wrong. I've only been able to do it once in 4 months of GPL online.

Yeah, the disappearing of the cars in the beginning was scary. But I survived, too.  :)

The scrap was going on, and I enjoyed it very much.  ;) In the end I was indeed lucky to get a good Score-place.
