Season 26 Amateurs Trophy - Round 4 - Snetterton

Welcome to the fourth round of the Amateurs Trophy. Back to Blighty and the flat ground of East Anglia. Snetterton.

Like Silverstone a former RAF airfield, Snetterton has some fast straights and some tricky corners. Often produces close racing, hopefully this one will too.

Our race will be run under INT rules and only ONE reset is allowed. Entrants must complete 50% of the race distance to score. EACH Shift-R MUST be followed within TWO laps by a Stop 'n' Go.

All drivers have free choice of chassis although the faster drivers (you know who you are!) should avoid the BT11 and Lotus. There is currently no handicap for this series.

PB in qually - good
Up to 3rd at one point - great
Span lap 19 - not so good
Steering was bent - span , span, span & limped home. Should have taken a Shift R
Some good racing until then. Looks like the podiums were shared out a bit more this race.

I have not seen the replay yet, but I just wanted say awesome race everyone! Thank you mainly to Bernie. I could not have asked for a better competitor to race against. Lap after lap of clean, hard fought racing. It was very challenging, and I just wanted to push harder every lap. Thrilling stuff! On a separate note Bernie, your connection looked good for most of the race. I only saw your car "disappear" a few times. Not bad really.

Thanks, good race, and Congrats to Johnny for the win.

Commiserations to the people who had bad luck.

- Walt

Disappointing. Was doing nice 1:30s in practice on low fuel. Got one in qually and was pleased to get pole. Never quick off the line so wasn't surprised to see Rog go past at T1. Determined not to crash so a bit cautious. Easily out dragged him down the straight and although he took me again on lap 2 I knew where to go and this time I made it stick. Was very conservative so wasn't surprised when Johnny caught me.

Again, once he got past the Honda power got me back ahead down the straight but I was vulnerable in the start/finish and that was my doom. We came together and I flipped.

Although I wasn't that far back, the reset, the cold tyres and full tank meant I had little chance of catching the guys ahead. I estimate that little lot cost me around tewnty to twenty five seconds :( Pretty sure Johnny and I would have been contesting the top step all the way home but it was not to be. Billy and Martin fell off which got me back to 4th but no further. Had my one mistake at the hairpin which let Dave catch me so now 4th rather than a podium was the aim.

Got some better laps in and Honda power got me back.

From 1st to 4th so very disappointing but some good racing. WD to the podium and especially Walter - great FL mate.

On the whole though some good racing with Rog, Johnny and Dave. That bit WAS enjoyable.

One thing to note was that the Latency bars were sky high every time I had someone near me.

Hi Walter , glad you enjoyed the race as much as I did , seem to remeber Billy was involved for much of it too , all good clean fun .

Took me ages to catch you and Billy , then once past after your coming together ? you were pressing me very hard , lap after lap , so I just concentrated on doing my own thing and keeping it clean and trying not to make mistakes , so have to thank you for not tripping over me in the several places where I was slower , when you got by with 3 to go I decided resistance was futile , it was all over , so cruised to a safe and comfy P3   :)

Thanks again for the fun . Grats to Johnny & Walt , all who finished and commiserations to those helpful soles who fell by the wayside ,Ta! for making my podium possible  ;)

Back on the gamepad for Snetterton- the stop for the hairpin causing too much trouble using the wheel. Anyway... A decent qualifying and good start from third I followed the leaders to find Paul pulling away slowly at the front and the Ferrari in front a match for my Coop. I was tapped from behind at the hairpin and spun dropping to 4th or 5th and after regrouping the two cars infront came together before the next turn with one going to each side of the road I tippy toed through and away. The Ferrari in front ran wide to let me back into second and try to reel Paul back. I caught him and had a few good laps racing. I passed him and he passed me back. I saw he was slower than me exiting the final turns and several times got close on the finish straight- finally I got a good exit onto the straight carrying good speed- the pit wall flashed past really close and I pulled along side Paul then I was spinning backwards. I'm sure there was room I need to see the replay about lap13 I think. I trundled to the flag from here watching Prib. Well done all.

I think you overcooked it pulling away from the pit wall Johnny, but it is just one of those things. I knew that you were quicker and I took the racing line. Your speed surprised me out of that last turn or I would have left a bit more room for both of us. I actually expected you to pass on the inside into T1 but felt confident that I could get back past on the straight.

Ah well. On to Mexico.

A late decision to make a guest appearance at Snetty, meant a quick modification to the set-y, err . . . setup, and a dash for glory.  It was to be a case of so near, yet so far . . .

After 2 corners, I'd conquered 2 places, to sit fourth, so set forth towards a top 3.  The hairpin seemed the place to make further progress and after eyeing up the geometry for several laps, I was confident of passing 1 or 2 cars there, and settled at 1 and 3/4ths.  I hope Johnny's nose wasn't too bent out of shape, from my poor maths.

His calculated driving soon put him back in front, and closing on the leader.  A squabble commenced with Badblood, and I gained back fractions.  And when their numbers briefly combined, the results meant I'd turned into number one!  ;D

With half the race remaining, I'd a real chance of a surprise victory.  But then it happened.  Out of a clear blue sky, a dark cloud suddenly appeared, and attached to one end was my Honda!  For no good reason, the engine had blown up.  Had to stop at trackside, wait for Johnny's Cooper to pass, followed by 2nd place, 3rd, 4th, and a 5th, all nicely spaced, and gloating as they went!  This was extremely bad manners!                                                                                 :taz:

Having reset, I then parked the car 2 corners later, on a bank that had been moved to block the pit entrance, where I was headed for my 'Stop and growl.'  It was race over.

Hi Walter , glad you enjoyed the race as much as I did , seem to remeber Billy was involved for much of it too , all good clean fun .

How could I forget! Good race Billy, It was nice having a three car battle. I watched the replay, and towards the end of the race, there was a caution flag in the last corner for Maddog's Honda, and I am guilty of not slowing down. In fact, I had so much momentum that I was able to overtake Billy on the front straight. My only excuse is that I did not want to let Bernie get too far away. So I am sorry if I took advantage of the situation.

Ah well. On to Mexico.

Mexico is not that far of a trip for me. When I was a young lad, My family used to go to the border towns of Mexico for lunch, and come back home in the same day.

Also, I can say that my dad went to the 1970 F1 Mexican Grand Prix. I think that the crowd was out of control that year; probably no thanks to my old man. They pushed down the chain link fence, and watched the race from the berm around the track. The F1 officials threatened to postpone or cancel the race due to lack of safety for the fans. I think it was the president of Mexico (or someone important) who feared a riot if they did not proceed with the race. So he promised the F1 organizers that they would not be held responsible if any race fans were killed during the race. And that was the last F1 race in Mexico until 1986.

I've just seen the replay and there was plenty of room for me if I'd stayed on one side of the track..... not the best idea to take out your team mate and chief mod. Feel free to report the incident Paul it's clearly my fault-sorry.

I wasn't too chuffed at the time but it is water under the bridge... it is just one of those things. You race cleanly Johnny and it was an error, pure and simple. I could have left more room. I will next time.

So no worries.
