Title: UKGPL Season 26 (2014) Friday Trophy - Mosport - Apr 4
Post by: EvilClive on April 01, 2014, 12:36:27 PM +0100
The first ever Canadian Grand Prix was held at Mosport in 1967 and was won by Jack Brabham.  The circuit was used again in 1969 in a race won by Jackie Ickx.  Jackie Stewart crashed out after tangling with a back marker, the privateer Al Pease, who was being lapped for the fourth time at only half distance.  At the end of the race, Al Pease was disqualified and to this day remains the only driver to be disqualified for being too slow.  More like something you would find in a GPL race than a real F1 event!

We did the easy cars last week, so now we have more of a challenge.

Congratulations Axel, Sergio, and Mark on your podium finishes!

Thanks guys! That was fun.

I got lucky to get the GT win but I did drive a good consistent race. I couldn't quite match Axel and Sergio's times but they both went off at one point letting me gain a position. Axel had me beat and was so close to winning. He went off with just a little over a lap to go. Man, that's some tough luck.

I had the pace to beat with the Can Ams. I used to drive the 712 a lot but only on Friday's for about a year now. I'm somewhat uncomfortable with it lately. I got lucky in this race too. I almost spun in turn 4 and had I spun, I likely would have impaled the car on the end of the guard rail. I got it out of the slide and lightly brushed the tail of the car on the side of rail. Then I rubbed the whole side of the car down the rail. Slid too much at the top of the incline and ran down that guard rail too. Luckily it didn't seem to hurt the car.

I've been thinking for a while now that Mosport likes me. I'm sure of it now. I seem to be fairly strong here. With the results I've been getting and the feeling I get when I get turn 2 and turn 4 just right, this is becoming one of my favorite tracks.

Take care guys.

Well done Greg, I struggled to keep up with you in the CanAm Ferrari before spinning off, and the less said about the GT race the better.

Has anybody testet the upcoming Road Ontario track?

It is a wonderfull track with a great layout suiting my driving, BUT:

I had a big freeze offline with F2  ::)

Another strange thing is that I have the feeling as if I drive on tramway rails on some parts of the track,
there are a sudden side steps and strange jumping revs and stutters in the FFB wheel.

After testing with an F2 I tried to verify this with a MK4 and Porsche, what proofed it is the track.
The F2 and Porky are still driveable, but the MK4 is not driveable on this track without high risk of crashing!

What about switching to the new Road Atlanta 71 (http://srmz.net/index.php?showtopic=9908) to avoid troubles?

I had some problems with Road Ontario as well Cookie. Sounds like a plan. Anyway - it is running on your server so you have the final say!

I installed the track late yesterday - problem here also.  Installed Jack Sellers update  which I'd recommend, but cannot say if that's a fix.  Could still be trouble. :-\

I have the JS update installed wich makes no difference in the driving issues ::)

I have no idea if we can use the Road Atlanta 71 as it has another length as the old Road Atlanta in SROU database ???

I ran in a race on this track last year and it all seemed fine, but if you guys are having probs like you describe then it is better to change the circuit.

I am open to suggestions, preferably an add-on track with some sweeping corners, just to keep things similar.

Willow Springs?
Wigram airfield?
Parco de Valentino Torino 1955 #9 ?

I don't understand why this makes a problem.  EDIT :  OK - must be presentation of results.  :)  It is new. so unknown if it is safe online with many cars together.

I would really love to race on Road Ontario!
It is a great layout but the road surface should exclude more delicate handling cars from the choice list ::)

The proposed tracks are new to me...

VIR has the sweeping corners and was proven save last Sunday

I am still puzzled by the problems that you encountered, because I ran a LGPL race there last season with an almost full grid of F2's and it was a fantastic race. I am not doubting that you experienced something odd Axel but I would love to try this track out.

I seem to recall that we were advised to use the Jack Sellers update to avoid problems, did you have that installed ? maybe that is important.

VIR is a good alternative Axel, and most people will know it

I'm afraid that a single sausage roll does not come close to swaying my decision Martin. But if we are prepared to move into the realms of multiple bacon butties we may be able to talk about "options"  ;)

Hmm, is there anything on SRMZ about the track? I think a race at Road Atlanta 1971 would be nice, as it's newly released.. VIR I never liked in iRacing!  :P

The rail feeling could be caused by traces, lines drawn along the track in GPL which define height. A trace uses a mathematical equation along the track resulting in a smooth ride, however, I don't believe there are any equations across the track, between various traces. As a result, if the difference of one trace height compared to the next is too big, grooves will form on the track surface which can upset the car. That is why most track makers choose not to include road crowning features in their track. The abridged isle of man track does have crowning and has resulted in some grooves in the track, particularly the right hand corner after the highest point of the track. Also, Björn Finnestadt intentionally put some grooves in some of his track, for instance to replicate the wear and tear of a dual carriageway he has in one of his tracks.

I asked Ginetto about this and got the answer:

" I can tell you that is a result of not aligned traces.
You can fix that only changing the TRK file, which is the file that makes the track unique; I'm afraid that changing it will result in having another track. "
