Season 27 Amateurs Trophy - Round 1 - Reims

Welcome to the Season 27 Amateurs Trophy.

The opening round of the Season 27 championship for the Amateurs will be in Reims (France).

Reims is basically several long straights with a couple of hairpins and a few cornfields. Catching a tow is what this track is about. It normally produces close racing.
Reims-Gueux was first established in 1926 on the public roads between the small French villages of Thillois and Gueux. The circuit had two very long straights between the towns, and teams strove to maximize straight-line speed of their cars; many slipstream battles ensued. Race organizers actually felled trees and demolished old houses in order to make the circuit even quicker. International racing came with the first official Formula One event occurring in 1950, the inaugural year of the Formula One world championship. The circuit layout was shortened and changed in 1952 to bypass the town

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

The race will be run under INT rules and only one reset is allowed.

I found some nice track updates on this website http://www.thomas-laechele.de/gpl/ (http://www.thomas-laechele.de/gpl/)

I may need to use the first race to knock off some of the rust.  ;)

Good luck!

May have to miss this one.  Some recent hardware upgrades have rendered GPL inoperable;  despite subsequent rollback.
Will give it another prod when I get home;   but it's probably unlikely  :(

Have fun chaps!

Obviously not seen replay yet, managed a 2:15:48 on race fuel. Avoided the usual first corner debacle up and started to chase leaders, was caught at hairpin so left plenty of room but still managed to get cut up but could continue to chase the Honda that went past. Slipstreamed past up to last turn made corner and accelerated away....disco no points what a waste of time

Not sure what happened there Boggy thought I had left enough room for you on the inside leaving the hairpin , saw nothing in my mirrors then next moment way ho ! Lap 1 too so not good for me I suppose but glad you were able to carry on in spite of the disco

Couldn't join the track for some reason so thought the race was over for me before it had begun but decided to re load the track in GPL and hey presto ! back in business

Spent the rest of the race playing catch up after my re set and s/r but without a tow my poor ickle brabby was outclassed and way too slow for those big bad rice burners and the bourne beasties

Grats to fabio and the rest of the finishers  :)

Well, managed to get in.   But no opengl / no pribluda.   As a result,  had no idea where cars were/who was driving  (as well as the other distractions  - split times/lap details etc!).

So had squashed screen, with a different view angle & lapboard going off the screen - not very helpful.

Then missed the start flag,  so was about 25 seconds down via the pitlane.  Something had clearly happened around L1T1 or so,  as despite starting so far behind was past a couple of cars by T2!

Unfortunately,  looks as the server started me in the pitlane over the start line,  so ended up showing as a lap down.

Had a couple of close runs with a couple of guys,   but no idea yet who they were.  Also stopped for a picnic in THAT cornfield.

Oh yes - and I saw more Hondas during the race than were on the start list!

Looks as though my fastest lap was L1.   Just about sums up my drive.

Despite the whine;  it's good to be back!

Good going team!

Cheers,
Dave.

Congrats Fabio and welcome back!  :thumbup1:

I owe a big thanks to Cookie for the set-up. Also thanks to everyone that I raced against. I do not think that I have ever battled so hard for positions. I had lots of fun in this race.

I am sorry for the accident at the start. I knew something bad was going to happen, but I just kept my foot in it anyway. Famous last words! I was able to rejoin the race and catch the draft without too much delay. I worked my way up to second position, and then promptly spun exiting the hairpin. Afterwards, I had a great battle with John. I really felt like we could go side by side around the whole track. Unfortunately, I made contact with John in the turn before the hairpin. So sorry about that. I was glad to see that he was able to continue on in third place. I had to use a shift - R and SnG to continue in the race. In the next lap or so, I managed to touch the wall in the last corner, and it was terminal for my mighty BRM.

The end result was a pitty because I felt like my car deserved much more credit. It is good to be back racing.

Congrats to Fabio, Dave R. and John for a well deserved podium! Thank you to Bad Blood and anyone else that I can not remember for making this season possible.

I'll try to play it a little safer next time.

- Walter

WD FABIO. The Wolf howls....

Season started GREAT. P1 after T1 hehe. Had some wheel to wheel with Fabio and got a lead on lap 5? when we touched at the hairpin. Tried to keep it nice and tidy but outbraked myself at said hairpin and dropped into the clutches of Walt and Rog. Rog double drafted us down the back straight and I drafted straight into the back of Rog. Sorry about that Rog (and Walt). Set off in about 5th with everyone in sight but I had obviously bent something because every time I touched the brakes the car was horrible. Two trips to the cornfield later and a tangle with Bernie I was miles back but with hopes of catching Dave and the pie man... and then I blew the engine. <sigh>

Bad luck on Walt. Felt a bit ring rusty but it would be nice to lead the last laps instead of the first. Maybe this season, that elusive 65 win will come.

WD podium, esp David who showed patience and consistency.

Pretty poor start for the season.
Start looked promising with an incident up front. Left a bit too much space for another car in T.2 & drifted into the corn field. A combine harvester would have been better than the BT11 at that point & required a Shift R. Running at the back I started to string a few decent laps together & managed to catch Bernie & Paul & we were in something of a three way "shall I show you a dumb accident" competition - which I was clearly the winner of. Race ended up in the corn field - the best place I could find to hide in shame.
Well done to fellow Black Nights Fabio & David for doing it properly.

A great start from 3rd and then Bang..upside down.. Reset stop and go and away again but about 22 seconds off the lead. I had some nice clean laps and eventually caught and passed dave.c - down the road I came across Walter and had some brilliant racing with him, he had some great pace in the brm, I think the replay will show a gentle nudge from me sends him flying- sorry Walter. I reeled in Rainier in second and promptly threw it away again. Nice to be racing again.

No problem, I had went off course in the previous corner, and I should have backed off when I rejoined the circuit.
As someone said after the F1 race at Hockenheim, If you can not race for the victory, the next best thing is the battles. Cheers, WC

It's really good to be back after nearly 5 months of a total no virtual driving, and I won the race!!
Many thanks to you all and your warm welcome back.
It was really an exciting race, even if not an easy one.
First of all many thanks to Rog and his tow that launch me from the 8th place on grid to the 2nd one: thx mate!
Then a really bad start as usual (Will I ever learn how to start a race with the 65s?!?) but after the first corner crash I was suddendly chasing the first one.
Was really exciting to fight with Paul for some laps but in the end we clinched each other on the hairpin and I discovered myself in 5th place.
But I was lucky again and after another crash I suddely found myself on top again.
Some small fights with Rog and Dave but kast laps were quite easy to drive, compared with the first ones.
Thanks everybody raced and see you soon down under.
Now it's time to rest: tomorrow I'm flying to a Greek island for one week of Ouzo power!!
Cheers form storming Monza.

Grats to Fabio on win
Grats to Podium

Fun race even with all the crashes shunts and then getting stuck in a fence, did a stop and go but then was on my own and no tow, best part of race was drafting between Badblood and Walter i think the BRM just touched 180, any link to replay or any one saved it i forgot.

With reference to moderation
I give plenty of room, I stay on my line, Bernie overtakes but before he is clear he moves across causing contact. As for not seeing me in his mirrors, he has just overtaken me so knows where I am

If Bernie "has" overtaken you , which he thought he had done , he has every right to move over , In fact it was for you to take advantage of the situation as you could quite simply have followed me down the straight , benefiting enormously from the tow effect and used the extra speed gained to improve your track position by re passing me , I could then in turn have gained a tow from you , again improving "my" speed . The overall effect of this would be that we both gain in lap times , that is the nature of slipstream racing , to use each other to gain performance and if done succesfully , close up on the leaders .

sorry it went sour , not blaming you in the slightest , But  I do think ( after looking at my replay)  you could very easily have avoided me !  you had plenty room on the inside , my overtake was quite legitimate IMO  :)

Hi Bernie
I think the "has" and "thought he had" are the keys to my comment.
From my replay you start to drift left straight after the corner and if you had completed the overtake there would have been no contact.
Quote
Blatant Side by Side contact: Penalty 2 Places
1. On a straight, the overtaking car moves out to overtake but cuts back in too early. The victim made no mistakes and was driving their normal line at normal speed. The shunter made no allowance for the victim whatsoever and was in full control when the incident took place. There was no loss of control. Penalty for overtaking driver.

"normal line at normal speed" that was me

OK so for arguments sake lets just say it was completely my fault .

My appologies for "attempting"  to overtake  ::)
