Title: UKGPL Season 27 (2014) Privateers Trophy (67) - Mosport - Aug 3
Post by: Phil Thornton on July 27, 2014, 07:50:47 PM +0100
Season 27 Privateers Trophy - Round 1 - Mosport

The first ever Canadian Grand Prix was held at Mosport in 1967 and was won by Jack Brabham.  The circuit was used again in 1969 in a race won by Jackie Ickx.  Jackie Stewart crashed out after tangling with a back marker.  More like something you would find in a GPL race than a real F1 event!.

Race List = IGOR
Server = UKGPL3
IP = ping ukgpl3.dyndns.org
Race date = Sunday 03-08-2014
Time = 21:00 UK time (21:00 GMT)
Track = Mosport (Papy original)

Replays Available here (ftp://ukgpl3.dyndns.org/Replays/Archive/Season27/Grads_Privs/)

Driver lists and token rules can be found on the championship standings page (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=452&theme=6)

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated for lap 1 only. For this event the red zone will be from the start to the exit of Moss on the first lap. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

The chassis token system is explained on the Privateers (https://www.simracing.org.uk/smf/index.php?action=LM2R&group=452&theme=6) standings page. Please ensure you choose a chassis that is within your budget, which can be seen by hovering the mouse over your points total in the standings.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

I'm woefully under-prepared for this one. The season caught me by surprise. I thought we were done until the winter!

Good thing I checked back in here a few days ago just to see what's what! Phew. I've no idea which way the track goes, yet to turn a single lap; in fact I'm not even sure I'll be at home this evening as I have to go to London later today but just in case, I make it back it, I may give it a go. The time stated is 2100 UK time but then it also states 2100 GMT in brackets; 2100 GMT would be 2200 BST wouldn't it? Are we kicking off at 2100hrs UK time or 2200hrs? I'm easily confused.

I am going to a kid's birthday party before the race. The party is scheduled to end when our race begins. I will try to be back in time to race, but I may not be able to join in the fun today. Cheers, WC

MASSIVE APOLOGIES for the grid. I thought I had set a loose one for all the Papy tracks and didn't check it. That won't happen again.

I might blame the loose gird for my ultimate numpty mistake of not engaging the clutch on the grid. Rolled forward a tad & got the black flag. First few laps were strewn with errors (& a 30 sec pit stop) but decided to carry on & see how many places I might be able to make up.
Bizzarely I spent a good part of the race chasing Rainier (but a lap down). Last couple of laps were a bit unusual - wait for the result but I think I might have actually unlapped myself. Oh what might have been!

There are days like that.  I'm used to start races with 2 cars per-line grids. I never thought there was someone on my left. I was a bit upset because I thought I was taking the ditch because of someone's lack of patience. Then, still watching Pribluda when I entered V4, I missed it, of course. I kept going because I still had my shift-R in the glove box but so did most people, right ?

A soon as I completed the "race", I watched the replay to find out out what happened at the start. It was quite different from what I was expecting:  I was 100% responsible for  the accident !  Not realizing there was a car on my left, I moved progressively to the left to prepare V1 and I pushed F. Locarno out of the track.
I'm truly sorry for the accident and for not waiting, I didn't even know who was involved.

Unlucky Bill, I was behind you and saw your jump start.  Pity your pace was very good, there was not much between us all for sheer speed; it was all about who made the least number of mistakes.  I was doing quite well as far as mistakes were concerned until half distance when I had a mishap at Moss and landed upside down.  I needed a ShiftR and after the S&G the cold tyres and full fuel load caught me out a few times.  I went wide 3 or 4 times in the latter half of the race but just managed to do enough to keep ahead of Bernie.  Not sure what happened to Johnny O, he was just too fast and I wouldn't have caught him if he had kept going.  Fran had excellent pace too,  I was close behind for a number of laps but I couldn't see a way past until he ran wide.  Dave was quick as usual but even he couldn't keep out of trouble completely, he ran wide at T2 whilst in 2nd place which put him behind me and Fran and then he tangled with me at Moss.

Overall a good race, tight qually and close racing; should be a competitive season ;D  It isn't about sheer pace, it is about making the least number of mistakes.

Congrats to David for the win, and Phil and Bernie for completing the podium!

To all Privateers, please report any incidents out of the red zone, if any, before next Monday (11/8). I'll be moderating the Privateer Trophy races in Season 27. Thanks.

An enjoyable start to the season. I had a couple of biggish offs that took sometime to recover from but other people were also having problems so I had company most of the time.
I had an exciting few laps near the end keeping Billy at bay until my engine suddenly lost power - though without the usual telltale puff of smoke - necessitating a reset.
Congratulations to fellow Soggy Bernie on achieving a podium despite a few minor mishaps. :thumbup2:

Had my first of plenty "offs" soon after the start,  pushing too much on cold tyres,  which dropped me right back to last place . Found the Brab was really nervous here especially over the hump at the end of the straight (possibly hitting the bump stops ) Spent most of the race in 5th / 6th swapping places with Paul as we took turns in putting stripes in the lawns !

The race seemed to drag on forever and found it hard to stay focussed when driving an empty track but the last dozen or so laps flew by after I got Phil in sight (due to his pit stop ?)  , began pushing hard to catch his very well driven BRM which then got my tyres up to meltdown stage 3 ! We both did a pirroette or two and at one point he even tried reversing into me at the hairpin , but I wasn't going to fall for that old lemon !

In spite of my best efforts , found I could get up close to Phil but there was no way past unless he made a mistake , (tried to lean on you a bit mate , but you are too old and wise for that  ;) ).

Nice to get the podium in the end but no idea how it came to be other than the misfortunes of the faster boys up front .

Grats to David on the win and Teamy  Micheal on a strong finish , commiserations to the rest , better luck next time .

Roll on the Rouen Round my Brabby really likes that place

It is always worth taking a quick look left and right at the start as setting the grid is a manual process and is easy to screw up.

My own race was fun. Started cautiously and soon got into the groove. I had tweaked the Brabby setup just before the start and although it was much quicker I had managed to dial in some oversteer. Caught me out on lap something or other and in over correcting went spinning into the hedge where the softest of kisses left me backwards and without one of my wheels. GPL can be SOOOO frustrating sometimes....

Started again, just getting out in front of Michael and felt I had the pace to stay ahead but got a bit excited chasing Dave and Bernie ahead and blew the engine. Early bath time :(

Chasing Dave's Honda was fun as I could catch him in the twisty bits and just get destroyed up the back straight. His lines were always interesting though and the whale looked a bit of a handful... clearly better sorted than my Braby though.

Fran, did you do a shift-r in the race? I couldn't detect it. If you had done a reset you could have salvaged a good finish I think!?

Nevermind, noticed you had to reset around Lap 12/13. GPLRA sadly doesn't recognize all resets.

MASSIVE APOLOGIES for the grid. I thought I had set a loose one for all the Papy tracks and didn't check it. That won't happen again.

To be honest, I hadn't noticed!  There again,  I was right at the back!
Haven't driven 67F1 for a while & only managed a couple of laps at the end of qually/practice before the race.   I was glad to have got to within 3-4 seconds of the next car on the grid;  as opposed to the 10+ that I had been.

Must be too used to the 65/F2;  as kept going sailing over the hump & into that fence which is miles away...
Did that in the race a couple/few times too.  damage report just mentions some minor bending;   but I swear there was more than that.  I had red tyres on the right side for what seemed most of the race.

Luckily though,  the Honda (body/chassis anyway) must be nearly indestructable!

Chasing Dave's Honda was fun as I could catch him in the twisty bits and just get destroyed up the back straight. His lines were always interesting though and the whale looked a bit of a handful... clearly better sorted than my Braby though.

I guess 'interesting' is not exactly a compliment ;)  It was certainly not doing what I thought it should be doing  (not that I would know a good line if I saw one anyway).

There again,  after getting back from flappy paddles to H-shifter again;  I also found my shifter issues had returned;   with gear changes alternating between a couple of gears; Which is why my car probably sounded as if it had an engine problem & showing about 20 gear changes on the back straight!

I have a replacement shifter on the way from Logitech's spares-shop.  Although I doubt it will be here in time for Ams tomorrow...

All in all, I've got to be pleased with the final (provisional) placing of 12th -> 4th.   Not a good outing;  the car was a bit evil;  but  others must have had a really really bad time.

Anyway,  it's good the Privs are back in season again.
Good going podium & cheers all.

Dave.

Not a good comeback on the 67s...
I don't like Mosport track, I didn't trained before the race and my back started to hurt again...
I quit few laps after reaching 50% mostly for my physical problems.
Anyway, grats to mate Dave for the win and everybody raced.
See you soon
Cheers

A very hard race for me ...
My departure was very bad, I started very slowly and let Jonny and Billy pass.
Billy did a mistake and I was 2nd until it was my turn to do an error, and Phil + Fabio could overtake me.
Fabio went out of the track, so a few laps before mid race, the two BRM of Jonny and Phil were leading in front of me.
During several laps, I was very close to Phil's BRM ...more and more until I was surprised by his slowlyness at Moss and rear ended him :(
it was completely my fault !

Jonny really deserved to win but unfortunately was disconnected ...so I got a very undeserved win but probably a very temporary one !!!
