Season 27 Works Trophy - Round 3 - Clermont-Ferrand

The Charade Circuit (also known as Circuit Louis Rosier and Circuit Clermont-Ferrand) is a motorsport race track in the Auvergne mountains in France near Clermont-Ferrand, the home of Michelin and Patrick Depailler.

Built in 1958 around the sides of an extinct volcano, the originally 8.055 km (5.005-mi) long Charade was described as an even twistier and faster version of the Nürburgring. Some drivers like Jochen Rindt in the 1969 French Grand Prix complained of motion sickness, and wore open face helmets, just in case. But 1970 was no better- Rindt was hit in the face by a rock, something that the circuit was usually littered with, and often caused punctures on the track.

In his 1969 book Motor Cycle Racing, Peter Carrick wrote:

"The French Grand Prix circuit at Clermont Ferrand was seen to be in complete contrast to the lap at Monza, when it was first used in 1959: the longest straight was 650 yards and a variety of really tight corners quickly demonstrated—or exposed—a rider's skill!"

The full time drivers can start to practice as soon as the server is available.  Reserve drivers can also join as soon as the server becomes available but must leave the server with 35 minutes of qualifying left, for a total of 5 minutes; this will allow any remaining full timers to join.  If there is enough space on the grid, the reserve drivers will be able to rejoin when there are 30 mins of qualifying left.  

Moderating The red zone will be fully moderated from the start to the Charade straight on lap 1. Other moderation will be on reported incidents only.  However any incidents that occur in the red zone that are not reported by the drivers will be reported by the moderator.  This will allow all affected drivers the opportunity to present their case before the incident is moderated.  This should ensure there are no surprises when the moderator's report is published and hence appeals will be less likely.  If you haven't received a PM about an incident before the link below the results table is removed, you can be sure that you will not appear in the moderator's report.

Please restrict chat to pit messages including at the end of the race until ALL drivers still racing have crossed the line.

Crap! Threw it all away when sweat got in my eye and I got distracted at the wrong point on the track...

I just can't keep it on the island long enough mentally at the moment. I guess GPL is the best way to discover your deepest psychological troubles ;D . A shame because I had a good pace going despite lack of practice. Thankfully there's always next time.

Gpl is one of the finest tools to teach concentration I've ever come across - Esp. at circuits like Charade!
Mine still needs some work as with that said, I did mess up in the downhill hairpin once and entered backwards from the lower half...  :whistling:

Really pleased to have won here, Clermont has been a favourite of mine since it was released. I would like to have passed at least one car on the road though - I inherited the top step only through other peoples misfortune.

Cookie - what a shame that tiny contact ruined our fight... very disappointed for you. Sorry...

The moment I saw I'd finally gone under 3:20 in qually I resolved not to even try to repeat it in the race. I was quite happy when the the top 5 got a bit of distance on me, but was a little surprised how fast they left me for dead. That left me lapping with Cookie up my tailpipes, and I had a very stimulating 7 laps trying to keep it together. I was very happy with my consistency - this track is so narrow and twisty it was always going to be difficult to make a pass, and I decided that if I couldn't be quick, I had to be consistent... On lap 7/8 Cookie was closing on me in the last sector. I suspect he was trying to get close for a pass on s/f or the straight after T1. I made a small error and revved to control the car - it flicked me just a little bit right, and I think Cookie was unlucky to be right there, and got what I thought was the tiniest of taps...of course what we think, and what the GPL crash box thinks aren't always close..... I'm not sure if that killed your race, or whether you were able to rejoin?

[EDIT: Just watched replay, didn't happen quite the way I remembered it, in that I came round in a long arc whilst trying to recover control and hit you]

As soon as Cookie was gone, there was Iestyn to make sure I got no rest. I tried to keep things smooth, but he did everything right, and got me out of T1 about 3 laps from the end. I was pootling around feeling safe in P4, and was very surprised to find that a disco meant I got a podium...

Quite a weekend of speed for me, I did a 250 mile bike ride today, and 200 miles yesterday - plus I drove 5 racing cars (Le Mans, Ariel Atom, M3, Jag single seater and Caterham super light), plus a kart and a LR Discovery at Bedford Aerodrome - anyone else done Palmersport? I'm generally quite competitive in real cars, and finished the day 6th overall (out of 34). They did say that the most prestigious is the Jaguar single seater, and I was 2nd fastest in that!!.. Not sure if I should thank GPL for that, or whether its just the fact you don't have an instructor yelling (encouragement) in your ear all the way round the lap!!! :-)

..speaking of real cars, just realised Goodwood was this weekend - how was that, those that went?

NP Arf, it was fun as long as it lasted, seems we had the same tactics to survive,
but I was such frustrated when I stuck in that green and did not get that Braby out, so I retired.

Was the first 67 race here for me and I had not hoped for more than 2-3 laps. All my practice before was ended in the second lap.

Congrats to the finishers and podium, tough race this one.  8)

I got 3rd in the oAo race here 5 months back, with a BRM, so revisited it again here. 4 seconds slower, one for each sector.. not bad out of the blue  :laugh:

Connection was not great tonight, although for my part in Q, I flipped on attempt 1, and spun on the outlap for attempt 2, missing the line by a few seconds, but the lap was a 3:23 with a late spin. I knew it would be a long race, and that the top guys were probably too fast for me anyway today, so being at the back meant an easy start. Very easy for JonnyO, who was all the way around the last corner and then some!

Come the race, the Q meter 'triple jump' began. It was tough to follow closely and pass cars that were jumping about.. but after an early scrape in a pile-up, which gave damage to the front (making right handers harder and lefties like T1 into more of a RB 2011 EBD-style exit), I was thinking it would be that much longer..

In the end, it was good fun coming back through the field to 3rd, via attrition and some good passing with co-operation from other drivers, so I was happy on the last lap.... before finally the inevitable disco made it 6th place instead. Ah well!  ::)

PS. I agree on GPL being a concentration tool! It definitely requires focus.. be it Hockenheim, Montjuich or Clermont-Ferrand! Unlucky Cookie.. Greg also got stuck there in our last race. Arf - that sounds awesome.. I do think our sim-racing experience helps us when we drive real cars.. it's just another physics set/mod! No wonder you were on fine form tonight then..  :)

It's a shame about all the attrition. I guess it's inevitable here since it's such a difficult track. It looks like I brake too early for Tristan to handle.  :(  I was surprised Tom didn't get the win. Once I spun he had a nice gap to work with.

I was very surprised I got the pole and rather happy. GPLRank says I've run a 3:12.969? I can't find any record of it elsewhere. As much as I struggled when I first started practicing for this race I couldn't imagine I did that. I'm not sure if I've done that time or not. It could be from the tunnel but I thought I erased any time that may have been attributed to that. I know I was never able to carry as much speed through 3 places today that I have in the past.

I got extremely lucky I didn't get a DNF when I spun. I was trying to thread a needle at high speed and turned in too early. I thought I might have damaged the car but there's none listed. :) I knew I wouldn't be as fast in the race but I ended up being about a second slower than I expected by the time it was over.

I did good with my concentration. My bad spin was from trying too hard to open a gap on Tom so I might be able to quit abusing the engine so much. I spun in the last turn, late in the race, trying too hard to catch Tim. Other than two other times I almost lost it, early in the race, I drove a pretty good race.

I apologize Tristan for getting in the way. I can't brake much later than that on light fuel and warm tires. I appreciate you not hitting me. I don't know if it will help but I try to brake when the car in front of me reaches my braking point or 50m early. I think it's only failed me once. I also think I often brake earlier than drivers about my same speed and much earlier than the drivers faster than me. I hated seeing you out of the race so early. :(

Quali wasn't too bad with only 2 timed laps, and good for P4. Was pretty close up front, great lap by Greg in the Cooper and bad luck for Iestyn.

Just didn't have the focus in the race and made the same mistakes lap after lap, and got some damage I think. Bob kind of ran the same sort of race as me, with the occasional spin  :-\ However after halfway when he flipped I went a few turns later on the roof...

Congrats Tim, impressive, and Greg and Arf! :) Well done finishers, and better luck next time retirements ;)

Last of the points finishers, and to be honest with the way I was going round here, probably not deserved. That I survived so long was only testament to the Beast of Bourne (or variations on a theme depending on your love/loathe of the mighty anchor), I kept thrashing the nuts off it expecting to rip a wheel off somewhere or lose a piston or three down the longer stretches. As it stood, not one lap I did was clean, always some mistake or other, no matter how much practice or precision I tried. I got the pace down below 3:30 and was happy, but Doni kept coming closer and in the end I made (a few) mistakes that meant I went further down the order. As it stood, more fell off (permanently) and I reached halfway. Mental tickbox checked. 4 corners from the end of the 8th lap I binned it and rolled...

Hindsight is wonderful.. had I survived another lap I would have gone 3 places up the order.

 :).....well , no problem Greg, it's completly my fault and I payd it cash, and I'm so happy to don't toutch you .....    .....I'm desapointed 'cause I like this track, and a ended race so early is allway frustrating , but I'm shure about a good fight in Monza :fencing: :fencing:
