Season 27 Friday Trophy - Rounds 19 & 20 - Imola - 69Xtra

Welcome to the next round for the Friday Trophy, we move to Italy. Imola. Named for the Ferrari heir, Dino, the track was renamed as the Autodromo Enzo e Dino after Enzo's death in 1988.
The track was inaugurated in 1953, and it had no chicanes, so the run from Rivazza all the way to Tosa, through the pits and the eventually notorious Tamburello was totally flat out, as was the run from Acque Minerali all the way to Rivazza was just a long straight with a few small bends; and the circuit remained in this configuration until 1972. Long time home of the San Marino Grand Prix (and once of the Italian Grand Prix) the circuit is fast, bumpy and dangerous.
After the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna in 1994, the track was remodelled to reduce speeds but we use the original, high speed layout. Luckily the worst we can suffer is a disconnect.

This seasons tracks will be easy and well known to have a smaller time gap between the lights and heavies,
if there is a too big gap on a track, a stop and go for the lights in the 30min race will be recommended!

This is really designed to be a fun series with 3 different car mods
- running 1 sprint length race of ~15 min and a ~30 min race with the same car.
- ONE SHIFT-R with NO Stop n Go

Light drivers are restricted to not use the big 4: McLaren M7, Brabham BT26a, Lotus 49b, Matra MS80
Heavy drivers will allways have a free car choice!

The 69s 312 has no chance to keep up with any of those big 4 ;)

In the Rank it's ~1,5sec slower

The Ferrari looks pretty fast when choosing Multiple Choice Hell on GPLRank

Axel knows I can't resist driving a Ferrari especially on an Italian track. I don't know what to do. It appears that the Lights have too much of an advantage but I don't want to drive a slower car than the other Lights drivers except for sentimental or nostalgic reasons. I do seem to be slow on this track and I don't know if I've ever driven the 69x 312. The 312 may not be much advantage on the Heavies in my hands but I might pick up a lot of speed prior to the race starting.

Congrats Axel, Mark, and Andreas.

Christmas in September? Axel was especially kind to let me drive the 312. When he said he would drive the BRM prior to the 1st heat, I thought he was trying to give me a win? Don't worry Axel. No matter how bad you guys might kick my butt at times, I won't get too discouraged.

That was fun. This was my second outing here in GPL. I used to drive here a lot 20 years ago in Microprose's World Circuit. I can't actually remember doing it though since it's been so long. My 1st try in GPL here was rather ugly. I used qualifying to set up the car and over fueled the car significantly for the race. The best I could do was 1:30.5 in the MS80 but before the race was over I was getting comfortable with the car and had learned the track.

I wish I could have kept up with Axel longer in the 1st heat. Axel was starting to open a little gap so I went flying into Rivazza like my tires were warm and spun the car. Luckily I didn't hit anything but I had to wait for most of the field to pass me before I could continue. I caught up with Andreas and DaveR pretty quickly but I thought it was going to take a while to find a place to pass. Both Andreas and I were able to pass Dave coming out of Tamburello but I ran wide at Tosa immediately giving the position back to Dave. Dave made it easy for me the 2nd time with an off track excursion of his own. I almost caught up with Andreas again when time ran out. Another 3 or 4 laps and I'd have passed you too Andreas? As well as Andreas was driving I figured it would take at least 2 laps to get a good opportunity to pass, maybe longer.

The second heat was great for me. I was fairly fast and consistent. Mark and Axel were fast enough that I couldn't make any real mistake or take it easy. I was able to back off a little bit in the middle of the heat but for at least 2/3 of the race I had to go as fast as I could to keep them from gaining on me. The MS80 setup that I transferred to the 312 worked very good. It was fairly easy to drive and very smooth. I thought I might be able to beat Axel if he drove the BRM. With him in the 312 the only real chance I had was if he made a mistake. I also imagine Mark would have been very strong in the 312 too.

I couldn't have asked for more. A win and fast lap were much more than I expected. It was nice to get some experience in a pleasant car to drive that I hadn't used before. Axel and Clive are doing a good job teaching me to drive more of the cars in GPL. Before coming online last year, all I knew how to drive were the 67 312, 330, 712, 910, and M8F.

Thanks guys.

Well done Axel and Greg.  I completely forgot about the Ferrari, and it was faaast - just couldn't quite keep up in the noisy BRM.  Managed to keep ahead of Axel in heat 2 after he switched, so that was something.
